I've…read morealready seen the World's Smallest Church in Winslow Arizona and the Smallest Church in America in South Newport Georgia, so this was of interest. (They're in my "Superlatives" collection.) Built in 1972 by Rev. Emory Young and volunteers, the chapel was inspired by a similar roadside church spotted in Washington state. Chiropractor Dr. Gaylord Kelly helped fund the project, and local businesses and churches pitched in. The result is a 12-by-24-foot structure with six petite pews that seat just twelve people. Despite its size, it's one of the smallest churches in America and has hosted hundreds of weddings over the decades. Inside, I found a narrow aisle, a guest book for prayers, and a quiet, welcoming atmosphere. The chapel has weathered storms, vandalism, and even Hurricane Matthew, thanks to the care of volunteers and passersby. Located just off Highway 501, it's easy to miss but worth the stop. It was a quick in-and-out today. A volunteer was here, probably keeping an eye on it on a Sunday morning. I didn't stay long. They do accept donations but I didn't spot a donation box.
