A historic spot and a great place for a pint. I was imagining all the talent in one room decades ago.

'The Fitzroy Tavern' is part of the Samuel Smith crew which means it is cheap. It is the perfect place for stocking up on a few drinks before a night out or just to socialize with a group of friends. The pints are under £3, which in this day and age in London, has become very rare. I usually go for the cider, but I have been told by my male counterparts, that the lager is good and they also provide a good selection of ales. Samuel Smith pubs tend not to have any music, and this one is no exception. This results in quite a loud clatter of voices when it is busy, but also enables you to have a very soft and quiet drink in the afternoons. The last time I was here, Simon Amstel was present and as an avid fan, this must only mean good things. read more

Good pub!Was once a great pub. I first came here in the 60's with the painter Robert MacBryde & the writer, Elizabeth Smart : but that was just the start! At afternoon closing, most people in the French pub (Soho) would either drift south to the Kismet Club or walk north to the Mandrake, Muriel's or the Fitzroy which mysteriously stayed open :different licensing hours? In those days the Fitzroy had one huge bar - like a ballroom- & a smaller snug bar, where the literaries grouped. At,or before closing time, we'd fall out & go across to Bertorellis (aka Bert O'Reilly's now recently closed)where you could get a spag boll for 2/- In recent times I came with old friends,Aeronwy & Llewelyn. The Dylan Thomas Society meet here annually to honour their father's time spent in this pub. read more

The Fitzroy Tavern is decent sized Sam Smiths pub on Charlotte Street. In addition to the usual Sam Smiths beers they also sell buffet lunches which are comforting, though not amazing. Charlotte Street is one of the prettier streets in Central London, and a good place to do some minor celebrity spotting (I've seen Preston & Chantelle twice and also the Towers of London). The Fitzroy Tavern sits in the middle and has outside seating, which is pleasant when it's warm. The bar itself has fairly standard pub decor, through with something of a 'Bloomsbury Set' theme, which is reflected in the paraphernalia which adorns the walls. There are two floors, the larger ground floor which holds the bar and a smaller room downstairs, where there occasionally seem to be performances. The Fitzroy Tavern is worth visiting as it is a good, cheap pub in a nice area of Central London. read more

One of the very best pubs in London - cheap, historic, fantastically located and usually filled with the right people. I came here for my birthday and was treated to seeing that guy from the Fast Show play the fruit machine all night long, just like his character does on the show... "hold that, nudge that and... oh, well it worked last time" But aside from celebrity spottings it's the less than 2 quid Ayingerbraus (or Man In A Box as we call it), the good Sam Smiths ales and the cheap but wonderful organic lager that gets you here first. Then you start realising the place has charm having been a former haunt to the best poets and philosophers of UCL (many still do drink here, just look around you). Once you've noticed the charm you'll then notice it can get unbearably packed in here, but that's ok because Goodge Street is one of the best places in the world to spill out onto with your pint in hand. In summer the whole block is littered with Fitzroy drinkers on every bit of street furniture. Nothing is better than drinking your 1.95 lager and sharing crisps whilst standing next to the outdoor patio of the neighbouring Michelin-starred restaurants where the celebs in full view have just paid your day's wage just for a glass of wine. Feeling the Crunch o' Credit peeps? In these harsh times we now face you can rely upon Sammy boy Smith to help you through it! London based Pub with small northern town prices! I've got "two-hatted" in here a few Fridays after work without managing to cripple my current account in the process. Great! As long as you are happy to forgo the standard, branded beers you're used to and get stuck into Mr Smith's very own boozy concoctions then you're onto a winner. Sam (we're on first name terms) provides a good selection of poison; I particularly like the fake Guinness (Stout) and the Alpine Lager (mainly for the piccy of the Bavarian fella in Lederhosen on the tap badge). Girlies I've been with have confirmed that the vino is more than drinkable and good for the price. The boozer itself is pretty BIG inside with plenty of old skool London pub glass & wood furnishings about. There are these awesome rounded, wooden spheres dotted about the place which look just like the magic stones from Indiana Jones and the temple of doom (tried to rob one but they're well glued in!) good for comedy photo opportunity (Think "Boo boom shabba" heart ripping dude) Sorry ... Tangents! Smokey cordon outside which gets the sun til quite late, loads of seats inside, cheap beyond belief (all you hear is people saying "look how much change I got back from a yenner for 3 drinks!!"). So if you're watching them-there pennies during the recession; get yer self to one of Sam's fine establishments, I head to this one out of convenience being close to my work. Just remember not to ask for a Fosters, a pint of Guinness or a Stella etc. they're quite proud about their own alcomohol selection and the Manager's a meathead! The Fitzroy Tavern has always been the setting for a fun night out for me. I've been here three times, twice to see my friend's comedy show and once for an engagement party, and have been wholly pleased with my experience every time. All three events have taken place in the low-ceilinged, claustrophobic, baking-hot basement room, which was itself a bit unpleasant. My friends loved it, though, because I took every excuse to run up to the bar on their behalf in order to get a breath of fresh air! If the aircon was turned on a bit, it would make the basement room far more deal-with-able. The tables outside are the perfect place to enjoy a pint out in the sunshine. For both of the comedy gigs, we all came straight from work, providing us an hour or two to kill at the pub before the shows started. This afforded us the pleasure of taking up residence at some lovely, big, outdoor tables on the leafy little street around the side of the pub. The lovely sunshine and intermittent shade, cheap pints, and friendly bar staff made these afternoons truly pleasant. Sitting at the tables with a shandy, people-watching and chatting with good friends as the leaves rustle gently overhead...what a wonderful way to spend a summer day. The pub can get a bit busy as the evening goes on, but not painfully so. Overall, the experience is overwhelmingly positive and the Fitzroy Tavern is an excellent place to stop off for a pleasant pint in a lovely area of the city. read more

The Fitzroy is everything you could want in a London pub. You can barely get more central, the drinks are amongst the cheapest in town and you practically choke to death on the old-world charm. As a beer-obsessed vegan, it is my duty to know that the majority of Samuel Smith brews are completely free of animal products. That's right, a lot of beer on the market are fined with bits of discarded animals but this Sam Smith establishment serves many of their house drinks marked with the Vegan Society label. If you love history, do a search online about the literary leanings of the venue before you head on in and then sit back with a vegan fruit beer and soak up the atmosphere. read more

Classic London pub. Incredibly cheap range of beers on tap, if you're a fan of stout too I can definitely increase my recommendation if that is at all possible (about £2.50 a pint)! All the booze served here is sourced by the tavern, and you won't see any 'brand names' on the bar tender's shelves. Even if you order an old g+t, you won't be getting bombay sapphire in that. Samuel Smiths is my hero. His chain of pubs (yep i know he's long gone) have provided me with cheap drinks and lots of laughs,. A lot of the above has been had in the Fitzroy, I even suggested to a date that we go here once and ended up getting bladdered in Alpine, always a good look! As with every pub with the Sam Smiths brand, pints are as little as £1.80. In the centre of Fitzrovia/Bloomsbury this is unheard of. And very welcomed! The walls are cluttered with some amazing photos from the last century; look out for the Christmas ones with children squealing and crowding around 'Santa'; it's brilliant and taken in the 1930's. A perfect pit stop for a night out in town, or just a great cheap pub. Don't thank me, thank Sam. read more

One of the best places about this pub is definitely that is cheap - a couple of pints are always under a fiver which makes you feel like a super generous friend when you can offer to pay for everyone's drinks more than once in a night! Obviously because its central its a busy pub from 5 onwards on a Friday so avoid it if you are looking for a quiet pint for a deep meaningful conversation but if its a booze up with mates then I can't think of a better place. read more

Pretty pleased with my evening at Fitzroy's. The bartenders could have been a bit friendly, but it was Thursday night and quite crowded, so I'll give them a pass this time. Fairly cozy, pretty typical pub feeling - they sell all their own brands of everything (beer, cider, liquor, whatever), and it keeps the prices quite nice. Stopped in for a pint today on my way home from work. Cute little pub with apparently a good solid history. Good selection of Sammy Smith on tap. I had the Real Brewed Lager which was only about 2.50 per pint. Atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. It was pretty busy though so we never had a chance to just sit at a table and hang out. read more

There are lots of pubs in London like the Fitzroy Tavern but I really do like this place. The first thing to mention is that it's pretty cheap here but my favourite thing about this place is sitting outside in the summer time, cider in hand, watching all the busy people of central London walk past. Stopped in for a pint and ended up having a pint plus a rum and coke. Excellent prices and a big crowd. Not much room to sit but a friendly group of people and it was cozy, but not claustrophobic. Great for an after dinner drink at one of the many restaurants in the area! read more

I drink in this pub on the first Thursday of a month, as there is an informal meeting of Doctor Who fans. This is the only reason I visit this pub. As this is a Sam Smith's pub, the drink is astonishingly cheap, but deservedly so. There is no real ale - indeed, no branded beer at all (apart, of course, from Sam Smiths). The staff are indifferent at best, and rude at worst (though I do realise it can get very crowded, and for health and safety reasons they have to keep the outside crowd from blocking the pavement). There are pubs with better (though not cheaper) ale - and if cost really is your issue, you might find a Weatherspoons more to your taste, if you want a selection of real ales. It's a shame, since the location is good, and the building is nice. Ah well. read more

I've long told anyone and everyone who'll listen that The Fitzroy Tavern is one of the best pubs in Central London - and not just because it's the only place in the WC1 area where you'll be able to buy a pint for £2.50. This cavernous place is a haven for students, busy office workers and media types all looking to settle down for a natter and a cold crisp pint after a hard day - and you'll need to be quick if you decide to pay it a visit because it fills up fast. Particularly during the Summer months where you'll often have to have sharp elbows just to get to the bar. However, what makes The Fitzroy Tavern really so special is its atmosphere. It's warm, welcoming and practically fizzes with life on a balmy Summers evening. Walk in here for 'one quick pint' of their infamous Sam Smith's lager (known as a 'man in the box' due to the picture on the beer pumps of, you guessed it, 'a man in a box'), and before you know it, it's closing time, you're drunk, and the barman is slowly ushering you out of the bar. The Fitzroy Tavern is a very special pub indeed, and it still holds a very dear place in this ex Londonder's heart. I've had many many many happy nights here, and if you go there, I'm pretty sure that you will too. read more

I'm not QUITE such huge a fan of this pub than many people I seem to meet: it's a Sam Smith's pub which means you know exactly what you're getting in terms of drinks, which is fine for penny-saving purposes but not really much else. However it's a nice old boozer with a good layout, plenty of room upstairs and down and situated in a lovely part of town. It's a good bet in summer in particular when you can spill out on to the street, and is always a good wallet-friendly choice towards the end of the month! read more

Love this pub. It has historical connections, I'm told, but I find it good just because it's unpretentious, reasonably priced, and has a great buzz from being so popular. Sometimes unbearable before the smoking ban, its central location now makes it a great place to meet people. Some German lagers are on offer, too. Order a man in the box. Staff are friendly, and the large central bar means it's usually easy to find a spot to get in your order. It's got outside tables that are great for people-watching. There are some top restaurants around if you need a bite. read more

I used to come here quite a lot and it is indeed a great pub. It'll get fairly packed on most days (it's close to UCL and lots of students go here) but there is also plenty of space outside. The beer is cheap and delicious - can't really go wrong with Samuel Smith! There is a downstairs section which is nice but it sometimes smells of sewage so I try to avoid it. read more

I find this a very nice (and cheap) place to drink, and the food's not bad too. In fact the food, nice, big traditional pub meals with salad garnishes and relishes, while not being worthy of a gastro-pub, certainly do the trick when you've been drinking Alpine lager for an hour or two. This pub is always very busy, but it's not hard to get a seat or a table, and the atmosphere is convivial and warm. Right now the Tavern feels Christmassy and I expect it will be a favourite for office parties for the next month, since they have a large function room area hidden away downstairs with another bar. One downside: The toilets are down a steep set of windy stairs, so don't attempt in stilettos. read more

Wow! I forgot all about this pub, this was one of my favourite and frequent watering holes back in the days of north sea oil production, when three hour lunches were common place. This was a great venue for meeting people and basically having a great time. looks like it may have had a make over, but that won't stop me from getting myself down there for a serious bit of liquid reminiscing! read more

Large Sammy Smiths on Charlotte Street that tends to spill out onto the pavement even in winter. It's really popular, and not surprising considering you can actually afford to drink here. The service is always good, and the beer is well kept. Not eaten here so can't comment on the food, but get in early if you want a nice booth to share with your mates! read more

The haunt of many old writers, including Dylan Thomas, whose drunken festivities in photos adorn the walls. I am not a fan of smoke-free pubs, but the Fitzroy has tables and chairs outside (though they didn't have their heaters out this winter). Inside the bar is in the centre looking out, so you can be served from any angle, with seating around the edge. The food is a good selection of pub stuff, including jacket potatoes, nachos, and of course chips. Downstairs is a room that can be hired cheaply for a night's partying. A nice atmosphere - very few old locals dribbling in corners here, but it manages to retain character nevertheless through its original decor and literary reputation. read more

I love the Fitzroy! What a great place to go after work for drinks, although everyone else seems to think so too, so the likelyhood of getting a seat or table is slim to none. I've also been on a Sunday afternoon, when it's been quieter. The house red wine isn't great, but they have a good range of other wines at quite reasonable prices, considering it's central London. It has a great atmosphere, which is helped by the fact that so many friends and colleagues go there for nights out. A winner, for sure. read more

We stumbled in here because they had a board full of tasty looking food outside; we weren't disappointed. It was very traditional English pub food, but £5 for a pie and mash and some veggies that were surprisingly well cooked (and I mean they were good, not overdone!) There are pro's and cons to the Fitzroy. On the plus side it's roomy and cheap and unlike a lot of pubs in the area is not completely up its own bum. On the downside it often smells like someone died in it in 1972 and the food is borderline inedible, Great for whiling away a weekend afternoon with a pint. My fiance and I often go there to play cards but move on when you get hungry and avoid the downstairs room like the plague! read more

Spacious pub with those great Sam Smith prices. Staff are friendly and helpful but very uninformed as to what it is that they are selling, don't try asking whether a cider is sweet or dry for example. Great place to go for the thirsty but impecunious central London drinker though. read more
