Macchiato Me opened earlier this year in a strip of shops that sit on Wardell Street and, to me, mark the start of Ashgrove proper as you leave Enoggera. It's not the easiest to get into and the turn off Wardell Street into the small parking bays at the front of the cafe is a tight one. Better to park in surrounding streets. And yet throughout the day the cafe is filled with local Defence workers, Mums, take-away pop-ins like myself and more. It's a cafe for sitting outside in the sun as you sip your coffee and enjoy a sweet treat that the cafe sells (I believe they come from the cake shop next door) for morning or afternoon tea. They've just started selling pre-made Turkish bread sandwiches but the sweets still reign supreme here. Complimenting the Dramanti beans on offer, you can also purchase your home brewing equipment like Hario V60s or Chemex brewers. Drink wise there's plenty for non-coffee drinkers too including an Oreo thickshake. Are you game?

Served with large field mushrooms and fetta, served on toasted sourdough, they both found it quite tasty. The sourdough is toasted and the crust a little tough, so be sure to ask your waiter for a sharp knife! The daughter's fiance ordered the Egg's Benedict with Bacon, one of his favorites. I got the Fumati, which is eggs scrambled with smoked salmon, and was so yummy. A couple of us ordered their cold-pressed juices, which was quite tasty and refreshing. Great place to stop for a bite if you're staying in New Farm or vicinity. It's right on the 196 and 199 bus lines if you're not walkable, so easy to get to from elsewhere in town.

It was a bit of a disappointment to find that I couldn't find the variety of items that I saw online, and everything was a bit pricy. I did have the orange chocolate cake, which looked the most appealing, and was actually really rich and delicious (good for sharing), but I was sorely disappointed with their bread roll, which was way too dry. With its name an homage to the previous business that existed on the site (the beautiful old facade…read moreof which was used as part of the new building), Dan & Andy's Hawthorne Garage has finally opened its doors to the public. I say "finally" because I've driven past almost every day on my way to work and the "coming soon" banners have been teasing me for at least the last six months (maybe nine, or twelve even). When I drove past earlier this week and noticed customers enjoying their beverages out the front, I almost wept for joy, and prioritised a drop-in. Because who doesn't love a deli? And that's what the Garage is, a glorious deli, an upmarket supermarket for those who can afford $13 for a punnet of blueberries (I sincerely hope each berry comes with a guarantee of sweetness). Local brothers Dan & Andy have brought to life a grocer / produce / deli / meat / bakery / fine food / coffee shop. The space is much bigger than most similar billings I've browsed in Brisbane, and next time I go back, I'm making sure I have a good hour to take my time strolling through each aisle. I will also leave my wallet in the safe hands of a friend. I am keen on the fact that the Garage's own DNA Espresso bar (accessible via the deli counter or out the front at its own window) is open from 6am until 8pm every day, and I hope they don't end up scaling back on that because of lack of demand. The coffee itself (I had a flat white), while very nice, isn't quite up to the calibre of my daily morning brew (from Cup, so I kinda have high standards) - so I won't be altering my daily caffeine fix, but I'll be more than happy to pick up a cheeky takeaway whenever I find myself buying some Barambah Organics yoghurt, or Bagel Boys bagels, or Leavain bread, maybe a cupcake from Jocelyn's Provisions, or some Fever Tree mixers, or some of my favourite gourmet dips that I was overjoyed to see on the shelves here. Pick up some fresh flowers for your mum from the Campbell & Bradley flower corner. There's on-site parking around the back and you can pay for your takeaway coffee along with your other finds at the main checkouts. If you come in from the carpark, there are some adorable little trolleys for you to pop your shopping in. Look... seriously, somebody please take my wallet off me. I think it's time for a picnic!

This is the place to go. In the 8-10 times I've been here, they've never disappointed. Always make their food fresh and service is prompt. Be careful of the Ibis that are near the restaurants in the South Bank Parklands. Yes, they're everywhere and there's a lot of them.
