What does the Fox say? Ning, ning, ning, ning.... No, really. Brisbane's Fox says "Hey, look, we've got history but I had a facelift and I look pretty schmick. I'm still working out some kinks but at least give me a chance? Please?" We recently visited the new-look Fox for their Foodie Trivia night on a Wednesday evening and it's clearly appeasing the South Brisbane Trivia Lovers because it was packed. The trivia itself was fun (obviously we had a good team making it even more fun). We ordered from the bar menu (you can't order from the Meatball Co in the bar) and had between us the Pulled Pork sandwich, the Fox Chicken Parmy and the long bar cheese burger. The first two arrived promptly and it's bar food, people. Yes it's of a fairly high standard but it's still bar food - simple, fresh and comfort-food style. The cheese burger on our order was lost and took about 45-60 minutes to arrive. It was busy that night so all was quickly forgiven. The Fox is giving it a go and, while I'm sure like all new venues there's kinks to be ironed out, the new look is beautiful. I say, "Kudos!" for reinvigorating this historic pub and turning it into a place for after work drinks, nights out with friends or a wonderful casual dinner with a group of friends.

It was a rainy Saturday and the fiancé and I were looking around for a nice lunch spot before going to APT8 at GoMa for the second time. We traipsed up and down Fish Lane looking for something that tickled our fancy, and after walking past some decidedly empty looking venues we settled on equally empty-looking Fish Lane Bistro. It's fairly unassuming from the screetscape. Just a large building with an interesting mural facing out onto the lane, and timber french doors along the front. The only thing that betrays what lies inside is a page cut out of a magazine and stuck to the door advising that their Duck dish has one an award as one of Brisbane's Best Eats. We entered to find a charming bistro complete with large bar and a window along the back looking into the kitchen. This place does "quirky" well and seems to whisper its unconventional nature unlike some establishments that feel the need to bellow it out with so much "unusual and interesting" clutter that it can be overwhelming. It's understated with natural timber tables that feature sunken metal holes for water bottles and / or wine. Convenient but also slightly playful. The chairs are timber also but brightly painted with a bold black and white zig zag pattern across the back of the bench seating around the outskirts of the space. I LOVE a comfortable bench and I was not disappointed here, they even have cushions for ultimate cosiness. The exposed brick is beautiful and works well with the polished concrete flooring. Industrial and practical. The ceiling gives the appearance of a whimsical chalk board complete with sketched images of food items while the matching brightly coloured exposed ceiling lights drape between them. The bar tiles took my breath away in gloss white with bevelled edges laid in a perfect pattern to mimic the brickwork. But alas, I'm letting my inner Interior Designer get the better of me! The service was friendly and efficient. We were seated quickly and presented with menus and asked for our drink order. We waited 15 minutes for those drinks - we asked for a mocktail and as there were none on the menu the waitress took a list of our favourite ingredients and promised she would make something special, so the wait was understandable. What we were presented with was nothing short of perfection. Sweet, Summery watermelon cubes and melon flavours mixed with bubbly lemonade and ginger ale and a touch of lime to freshen. It was perfectly balanced and I recommended they put it on the menu permanently it was so delicious! For food, I was immediately enamoured with the little "gf" symbols that dotted the menu. AT LAST a restaurant who advertises what I can eat!!! OH HAPPY DAYS! Straight away I honed in on the duck and ordered (it was Crispy Skinned Twice Cooked Duck, Steamed Asian Greens and Orange Caramel). The fiancé went with the scallops (Scallops, Chorizo, Peas, Horseradish and Chervil in the entrée section) and we ordered Duck Fat Chips and Sea Salt to share. We waited 30 minutes for our meals. Granted, they had just opened, but it was a long wait. If we had have been on a schedule that would have annoyed me. But, at least everything came out together. The duck, I'm so happy to report, was nothing short of a TRIUMPH. If you've read any of my other reviews you might remember how much I love duck but being gluten free, I rarely get to indulge. This was one of those rare food-moments where I expected angels to land on the table and begin to serenade us in heavenly lifting voices. It. Was. That. Good. The duck skin was crispy as promised, and deliciously salted. It was the perfect consistency sitting atop the soft duck meat. I had two generous duck legs on the plate and after I'd given them a whole lot of attention I remembered there were Asian greens hiding below! They too were soft yet still with enough bite to give that beautiful soft crunch in the stalks. And the sauce.... Oh dear me, the sauce. It was salty and sweet and sticky and soft and just such a miracle! It wasn't overpowering but orange enough that you could delight in the fragrance it bathed over the plate. If you can't tell, I really frickin' enjoyed this duck. The fiancé said his scallops were fresh and lovely with a great flavour. The peas were puréed (a preference for us both with this kind of dish) and he enjoyed it a lot. The chips were a gluten-free work of ART. They were thick and crispy-crunchy with the distinct flavour of duck (from the duck fat). The salt was present but not overwhelming and there was a good amount of them, so once we were finished both of us were satisfied. You best believe I will be returning to this treasure of a bistro, and I have already threatened the fiancé if he doesn't get the duck I'm leaving him (spoiler alert, I won't actually leave him). I highly recommend this charming little place, especially on a wet weekend when nobody else is about. I have a feeling it might get a little busy during the week.

Popped in the Fox for a quick beverage after walking around In South Bank. I can't really give it a rave review as it was a quick stop. The drinks were good and the staff was friendly. I ordered a Ginger Collins which is a blend of house made lychee vodka, strawberries and ginger essences. Refreshing!

This impressive, multi-story establishment, fairly recently renovated in 1920s art deco style, has become incredibly popular with a young crowd, who flock there for cheap steaks ($2 on a Sunday) and DJs spinning tunes on their rooftop dance floor. I've been to one of these Sunday sessions myself and marvelled at the sheer volume of trade they must be doing, reflected in the hundreds, if not thousands, of red 'frat-house' cups that littered the heavy-duty carpet floors. They pioneered the ridiculously cheap steak deal a few years ago as a way of launching their business to rapturous effect. Since then all the other pubs started to do it. Now they even offer a kind of bar fly's family meal deal of sorts: 2 steaks and a jug of beer for just $10. Wow! Be warned though, the steaks come without any sides and the beer is mid-strength, if that bothers you. The downstairs bar services the old regulars during the weekdays and offers a pretty good selection of beer on tap as well as a wide range of bottled beers. Upstairs on the rooftop beer garden, the brews come in plastic cups and the bar is a utilitarian selection of vodka, rum, Red Bull and all the other chosen poisons of the young and stupid. Ah to be one of them again...

The Fox is a horrid establishment for the wrong person. I'm not trying to be a dick, but it's a crappy place to share an experience, especially in comparison to the many other pubs and bars around town. It does particularly well for sporting events, though, and it does have that sort of style. But if you're not into that, then it can be a pretty bland establishment. The beer, wine and spirits offering is nothing exceptional, the food is EXACTLY what you'd expect for the price they'd offer. I once ordered chips - what came out was something more akin to refried batter than anything potato-based. What if I needed to carb up before a gym session? What if it was festival season, and I felt the desire to whip off my shirt and reveal the artillery that is my arms? Yeah, the Fox. Pretty standard stuff here. It's a sports bar / pub. Just don't expect much.

I've been to The Fox twice and tried to get in once (for one of their famous $2 steaks), and to be honest I'm glad I couldn't make it in that third time. When it comes to the atmosphere, I'd avoid eating and drinking at The Fox unless you're so blind drunk you aren't conscious of the obnoxious clientele you're sharing a space with. Upstairs is nice if you're booking it privately for a function or a party, mainly because the bar staff are friendly, and you'd most likely be hanging out with your own friends. Besides that, The Fox is a handsome building and the staff are nice, but I'd avoid it unless you're into the dominating soundtrack of people yelling and hitting on you indecorously.

Top bar has magical lighting and can be booked out for clubs or events.

I came here for a few private events on the top floor and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The lighting upstairs is really quirky and sets up a great cocktail bar feel. It's not a nightclub where you dance. Its got pretty good views of the city and southbank, only problem is we went when it was raining and couldn't avoid getting wet. The frozen cocktails are really yummy, particularly their blueberry one (which tastes like cotton candy to me). We had many different drinks over the times we were there and none disappointed me. They also had great student prices, bonus! The staff was pretty attentive.

Well, I can tell this is a popular place in Brisbane, namely because when I stepped inside it was literally wall to wall people. Still, since I love checking out pubs I decided to brave the crowd and make my way to the bar and order myself a beer. Well, this is one craft-beer bar. The selection was huge, though being the typical lazy person who generally doesn't try anything new, all that much that is, I simply went for one of the more familiar craft beers. After I managed to get my beer I decided to check this place out and wandered into the courtyard - which was literally amazing. Unfortunately it was booked out for a function, so I stayed there for a very short time checking it out before moving on to find myself a seat - in the sports bar, which was a shame because I'm not a big fan of sports bars. They do have a rooftop bar, but the mean looking bouncer standing at the bottom of the stairs suggested that that was out of bounds - at least to me. Still, it was a pretty awesome pub, and one I'm going to have to check out again the next time I'm in Brisbane.

It's such a beautiful space, from the 7.5m brass bar, custom glazed porcelain lights, back lit shelves, & a charcuterie cabinet at the end of the bar (which will form the basis for a very simple menu in the coming weeks). Maker's menu has a strong focus on Australian wines, beer, and spirits; with the sophisticated cocktail menu an adventurous interplay of flavours, like nothing you'll find anywhere else in Brisbane.Prepared with flair, artistry, & unique techniques, having a cocktail at Maker is a feast for the senses. Try the "Whisky Wax Coffee", a combination of Whisky, coffee, beeswax, pollen, macadmia ($22), and watch how it's prepared. Served in artisan glassware with sphere ice-cubes, & some of the famous black garlic bread from Gauge. We also tried the Starward (Australian) whisky as well as another cocktail not on the menu. It's one of the main benefits of being in such a small bar, that one can have meaningful conversations with the bartender, request a cocktail based on your particular flavours, adding to the overall bespoke experience. Maker has arrived, and it is a game changer.

The latter which I had yet to experience in Brisbane. Sporting four areas, the venue has something for pretty much anyone. On Saturday, it was bustling. Almost every table will filled (which is good going seeing as they only opened on the 19th) and amongst the couples and a friends populating the venue, there was one big family table having dinner. It diversity of the venue was comforting and reminded me of the English pubs I spent time in growing up. We had one quick drink on Saturday and tonight I returned to grab a quick dinner. It was quieter tonight, which suited what I was looking for. The menu, in my opinion, is spot on in size. Bat snacks, sharing sized options, sandwiches, sides and bigger plates. It's creative, but not over the top or complicated. I opted for the chip butty, because chips in bread. Come at me. The bread came filled with shoe strings fries, black garlic mayo and homemade tomato sauce. It was crisp and saucy and... bloody perfect really. Sitting at the bar (it's all bar service), I chatted to the bar staff who were just the right level of attentive. I asked for a glass of red to go with my sandwich, a slightly odd pairing, I know. My glass of Pinot was light, velvety and was the perfect match. For a venue that's been open for an entire seven days, they're doing something right. Wait, scratch that. Everything right.

We had initially planned for the short course but upon arrival, we decided to jump into the long one with wine pairings. I wish we'd stayed with the short. The food was, well, fairly bland. It was beautifully put together and clearly thought through carefully. The pairings were superb and really well matched with the dishes, but not even one Australian wine in the mix - I suppose I should have realized this would be the case as it is more of a European style restaurant. Unfortunately, the food itself was just super blah. Again, very pretty but just not at all interesting. We left a little too full and fairly sotted. The pours were generous so make sure you don't drive if you plan that option. I wish I could recommend Deer Duck Bistro. They have all of the elements in place. Great service, beautifully appointed space, clearly talented sommelier and obviously skilled kitchen. But the one thing you can't fix is taste. It's a black spot marked but a row of rather destitute looking empty shopfronts. You've probably driven past in a million times. Surprise! This is where Deer Duck Bistro resides (Side note: they're about to open a tapas bar just 2 doors up which excites me. Perhaps this stretch of Milton Road could actually be resuscitated). Anyway, the fact that Deer Duck exists in this space is kind of fantastic. Walking in the interior is a rich, dark and has a very British "Honey, we've just gotten back from a day of hunting" atmosphere. We dined there on a Friday night and there were only a handful of other diners around us. It was a set menu for $65 and they've now got their liquor license so are able to offer a small selection of beer, wines and spirits. The chap and I enjoyed a stupendously large sharing plate for an entree which was a selection of in-house baked breads, cornichons (I just like saying cornichons), meats, cheese and a delectable smoked artichoke dip. For mains, he had the fettucine with mussels and I opted for the ocean themed fish. I'm not sure what a fish has to do to be ocean themed? Dessert was the stand out for me. The chocolate forrest which is given it's own theatrics with a jar of dry ice and liquid nitrogen and the textured pineapple which is small yet ample with it's syrupy flavours. I enjoyed dining at Deer Duck Bistro and perhaps it was the result of building it up so much in my mind (It had been on my "To Dine" list for almost a year), that I just felt a little underwhelmed. There was nothing at all wrong with our dinner or experience, but it just didn't live up to my own expectations. Deer Duck Bistro is wonderful though, and the service was exceptional - we never wanted for anything. It is more of a special occasion dining experience, but I'll be back soon. It took me a while to pick the restaurant, but once I heard about Chef Ryan Squires, I knew this was the restaurant I wanted to go to. Squires has done stints at The French Laundry and el Bulli and with a resume like that, I was intrigued not only about his menu, but also, why/how this caliber of chef ends up in Brisbane. Well, I guess Squires returned back home to open esquire and it made me very happy to see something like this finally hit sleepy Brissie. We came here for lunch -- there were kids involved -- and like one of the other reviewers stated, making a reservation is kinda a pain in the butt. I made the reservation for 8 people about a week before our anticipated visit. I was told that I had to fill out a form and leave a credit card (not a problem). Anyway, after a few days I called back and gave them the credit card info and spoke to a really nice man who ended up letting the filling the form part go. On the day of our visit we arrive to an empty restaurant. The view is lovely, along the Brisbane River, and we were seated at one of those large square tables. Our server Joanna was lovely. I know usually restaurants do not allow some of the table to order the tasting menu and some not, but I think they made an exception seeing we were the only ones in the restaurant. I wanted to get the most of my visit, so order the prix fixe as well as off the a la carte. The prix fixe was AUD75 for 5 courses which includes 2 appetizer-ish dishes, 2-entrees and a dessert. The menu is seafood-heavy taking advantage of all the wonderful fresh seafood available Down Under. I love the presentation and there are definitely hints of the Ferran Adria look on some of the plates. My favorites were the smoked trout, charcoal grilled calamari and charcoal grilled baby octopus, buttermilk fried chicken. Didn't care for the wagyu pastrami. A friend and I went a little crazy on a recent Saturday night, and I'm not ashamed to admit it (although my wallet is weeping). Let's talk about the ridiculous and incredible food. No, let's not - I don't want to spoil it too much for you, this is something you should get to experience with as little prior knowledge as possible. Frank D says the menu changes every day, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. I think it's more likely seasonal, and I'm sure that maybe a couple of courses get subbed in and out here and there, but for the most part we had the same menu (with a lot of courses still on the menu from Jess's date in early June). Never mind that, though. Esquire is a treat, not the kind of place you'd go every other weekend (as much as you might want to, and I do). We arrived for a 6:30pm reservation and were seated in the darkest, dingiest corner of the restaurant. Just jokes. We had a table at the full-length windows looking out over the Brisbane River and the Story Bridge. The next three hours or so were spent at our table, dining on course after delicious course. The bone marrow and bread was definitely the most exciting course, presentation-wise, but I've since heard that last week was its last week on the menu, so please don't get your hopes up! There will be plenty of other exciting things for you, don't worry. Also, be sure to slowly sip your palate-cleansing glass of grapefruit soda. Trust me. Little sips. It definitely cleanses the palate. After an amazing degustation with brilliant service, we retired to the informal side of the restaurant and got comfortable at the bar. The brilliant service continued, and it was great to have the opportunity to view the buzzing hive from a different perspective. By the end of the evening we knew almost all the service staff (and some of the chefs) by name, and apprentice chef Erik gave us three house-made chocolate bars to get us out the door. (I do love that even Esquire has "f*ck-off chocolates".)
