But hey, what's life without a little creative chaos? Upon arriving at the studio, we were warmly greeted, quickly checked in, and given the option to explore or grab a drink at the bar. The previous session had run a little over time, so the staff was hustling to reset the studio for the next round of soon-to-be Picassos. I appreciated the extra effort--they had each station prepped with paint, brushes, and palettes, making it easy for us to dive right in. Of course, we opted for a drink first. A beer and a glass of wine set us back a very reasonable $10. Not bad at all! With drinks in hand, we wandered around, admiring the finished pieces from previous sessions while soaking in the lively atmosphere. The music selection--a fantastic mix of '80s hits and yacht rock--set the perfect mood. Rachel, our instructor for the evening, took the stage, and I have to give a shoutout to the setup. Large monitors on either side of the room displayed her demonstrations, making it easy to follow along. She guided us step by step--what brush to use, how to mix the perfect shade--but for someone with zero artistic ability (me), keeping up was a challenge. More than once, I found myself a step (or three) behind. Thankfully, Rachel was a rockstar--always there to encourage, assist, and even mix paints when needed. Midway through, we took a much-needed 15-minute break, which was a nice touch. Whether you needed time to let your masterpiece dry or just catch up, it was a welcome pause. Unfortunately, there was a small medical incident during the break, but the staff handled it with care and professionalism. Luckily, everything turned out fine, but it was comforting to see how attentive they were to their guests. By the end of the night, we had our very own (questionable) works of art to take home. Are they Louvre-worthy? Absolutely not. But the memories we made? Priceless. Would we do it again? In a heartbeat. A great vibe, great drinks, and an even better experience. Highly recommend--for date night or fun with friends!

I ventured across the street and discovered a terrific new antique store, open since maybe the first of June. A lot of antique stores have (a) crap and (b) stuff that isn't antique in any reasonable sense of the word. Not this place. Everything they have is well-curated and quite lovely. The basement has some mid-century stuff, but that's not my cup of tea, nor is it apparently the owners'. It's the upstairs that captures their sense of what antiques should be -- elegant, tasteful stuff that would be welcome in any well-to-do home, regardless of era. Right now Omaha (to my knowledge) doesn't have another antique shop quite like this. All the other stores in town have at least some measure of pure junk that no person of taste would want in their home. Not this place. My only fear is that they might sell a lot of their current inventory in the first few months and slowly begin diluting the quality that they've established at the start. We'll see.

What went well? Delicious latte and cinnamon roulade. Im not a big fan of cinnamon, and the roulade had the perfect light touch -- both with the cinnamon and in the flaky pastry. Staff is friendly, and orders are filled quickly. Everything is really clean and fresh, and the outdoor space during the waning days of summer and impending autumn is quite inviting. What might not be so nice? This Place is quite large ... but does not have sufficient parking for the weekend surge, nor does it have much room for turning around once you've unfortunately committed to that already full lot. Park on the street to avoid the hassle. Enter the shop and you're smack in the middle of the line to order. It's a little disconcerting as folks in line want to leave the doorway space clear for entrance and exit, but then folks coming in arent sure where to go to actually get in line. Maybe a velvet rope and arrow to direct traffic? Again, this place is quite large -- with very high ceilings. That means it's LOUD, not exactly a cozy coffee vibe. I thought I'd heard they do Bible studies here during the week. That sounded lovely, until I found myself leaning over the counter each time the barista asked me a question because I had no clue what she was saying. How would that study work when you are constantly raising your voice to be heard? Finally, though my roulade was delish, as was my friend's (ugh) pumpkin spice latte, her iced pumpkin bread left much to be desired. The icing was cracked and falling off and the center of the slice still was cold, suggesting "fresh" from the freezer, despite having been warmed behind the counter.
