I was immediately struck by the multiple pottery wheels when I walked in - the perfect place to have a pottery party or take a class and get your hands dirty! The only downside was that I didn't have time to sit at a wheel myself and spin a creation of my own - I'll be back!

A converted chicken coop serves as a working potters studio and gallery with bowls, plates, mugs and various flower vessels available for sale. I purchased two unique glazed mugs for $28. The painters gallery featured abstracts, scenic water colors and acrylics in a variety of sizes. Our tour guide shared that many pieces of artwork are available for sale on their web site and custom pieces are also an option. We explored the flower gardens and enjoyed the park like setting around the "coop" and main gallery. Our visit was intentional as a stop on the Nebraska Passport Program and we enjoyed our brief encounter. If in the northeast area of Nebraska near the communities of Macy or Wayne, stop by and enjoy the views...both in the gallery and in the garden.

The roads leading to the parking include some counterintuitive one ways and you can (and I did) end up in a dead end, but it's generally not busy enough to prevent you from figuring it out. Entrance is free, with one exhibition being a separate paid ticket. I appreciated a substantial portion of the collection devoted to the Native American peoples of the region and the early expansion of the United States. Having said that, it was also a global collection. I gave myself an hour to view it and had to rush just to get a brief run of the place. Some of the modern art didn't really come off for me, but overall it was a thought-provoking collection. There was also a substantial educational component, with rooms being devoted to what looked like early childhood education and more of a summer camp for older children. The site was well known to everyone I talked to in the city, and clearly a significant local institution, but one worth visiting regardless of where you are from.

For Valentine's Day, we decided to step outside our comfort zone and try something new--painting!…read moreNow, let's be clear: we are not artists, nor do we pretend to be. But hey, what's life without a little creative chaos? Upon arriving at the studio, we were warmly greeted, quickly checked in, and given the option to explore or grab a drink at the bar. The previous session had run a little over time, so the staff was hustling to reset the studio for the next round of soon-to-be Picassos. I appreciated the extra effort--they had each station prepped with paint, brushes, and palettes, making it easy for us to dive right in. Of course, we opted for a drink first. A beer and a glass of wine set us back a very reasonable $10. Not bad at all! With drinks in hand, we wandered around, admiring the finished pieces from previous sessions while soaking in the lively atmosphere. The music selection--a fantastic mix of '80s hits and yacht rock--set the perfect mood. Rachel, our instructor for the evening, took the stage, and I have to give a shoutout to the setup. Large monitors on either side of the room displayed her demonstrations, making it easy to follow along. She guided us step by step--what brush to use, how to mix the perfect shade--but for someone with zero artistic ability (me), keeping up was a challenge. More than once, I found myself a step (or three) behind. Thankfully, Rachel was a rockstar--always there to encourage, assist, and even mix paints when needed. Midway through, we took a much-needed 15-minute break, which was a nice touch. Whether you needed time to let your masterpiece dry or just catch up, it was a welcome pause. Unfortunately, there was a small medical incident during the break, but the staff handled it with care and professionalism. Luckily, everything turned out fine, but it was comforting to see how attentive they were to their guests. By the end of the night, we had our very own (questionable) works of art to take home. Are they Louvre-worthy? Absolutely not. But the memories we made? Priceless. Would we do it again? In a heartbeat. A great vibe, great drinks, and an even better experience. Highly recommend--for date night or fun with friends!
