That aside, the hotel caters for all types, especially weddings. I stayed here for the first time three years ago for the Great North Run and on each and every occasion since, they have always shown us nothing but hospitality. One of the reasons I choose to stay here is that they have always been able to conjure up a meal of my choosing, but the choice from the set menu is always pleasing, they also cater for the carvery brigade which is nice if you like carvery's! They also have a good selection of wines and some regular and local beers. NB: if you are visiting Newcastle then this place is located approx. 6 miles from central station, or to put it another way a £15 cab ride! The meals themselves were very well made and I enjoyed every course of the set menu, something which I don't do very often as I am particularly picky. The cafe itself, open from 8am to 6pm, has a modern European feel to its interior. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The menu ranges from traditional breakfast items (including kippers?!) to gourmet burgers and sarnies. We had a tuna melt and a gourmet burger with homemade salsa and fries - both very tasty. The Cafe appeared to have a full bar but I didn't really see anyone drinking there at the time, except for coffee - which was fantastic by the way! They also have a very good cake selection. We had a slice of their Beetroot & Hazelnut cake which was suprisingly tasty and moist! (Don't worry, it didn't taste like beetroot at all, but it did have a lovely pink colour). The clientele appeared to be typical Gosforth middle class. The prices weren't cheap but I did feel we got good value and a pleasant experience out of our £20 lunch including drinks and pudding. It is quite tiny downstairs, but the seating area upstairs seems more roomy because of the high ceiling. The menu was on the board, but it was a bit difficult to read. There were loads of options, the hardest part is choosing an option! Once I settled on a turkey sandwich, I did add a chocolate brownie as the baked goods were sitting out... so tempting! You order downstairs and then make your way to a table, although they also do takeaway. The sandwich was ok, admittedly I probably didn't choose my toppings right. They also include salad and pasta on the side. The salad did not have any kind of dressing on it and they also didn't provide oil or vinegar to make your own and the pasta... well I think it had seasoning and olive oil on it, but it must have been in the chiller for some time as it was a bit congealed. So why the four stars? The brownie. Yes, it was that good! In fact, I almost bought another to take with me. It was a substantial piece that was gooey and rich on the inside. I haven't had a seriously amazing brownie in some time! It seemed like the other people who came in were just have tea and sweets... clearly they knew something I didn't. Wen we arrived we were met by very friendly staff who showed us straight too our rooms. Rooms were pleasant and very clean. Bar prices were reasonably priced with great beer. On the nite was a great llive band on which seems too be every wk. We met the owner russ who was very nice and friendly. We had a great nite ghost hunting with ray who we have met on a number of occassions. He is very frindly and always makes us feel welcome wherever we might be.
