I go here A LOT. It's about 30 seconds from my apartment, my girlfriend was a regular - now I am too. Cool bartenders, great beer + liquor selection, BBQs in the summer, lobster rolls + pulled pork otherwise. The Gibson is the perfect blend of casual and upscale. Gets busy in the summer on weekends with baseball teams etc. -- and it can be a little too packed for my tastes late on the weekend. Also: foosball. Hipster heaven. I am rating hipster heaven a four. Well, even though I have a self proclaimed unverified hipster allergy, this place kind of turned that around for me. The drinks were delicious and they have beers on tap. The crowd is fun and - gasp- friendly! We had shots and drinks with lots of new friends we made at the bar. The music was great and before we knew it it was almost 4 AM. I definitely recommend this place to those who are in or around the area. I imagine daytime drinking is actually a blast in here. In the midst of a snow storm we stumbled upon the Gibson and immediately liked the laid back vibe and the openness of the space as well as the fact that they were showing movies and giving out free popcorn. The bartender was friendly and the other patrons didn't give off that "hipper than thou vibe" which is so common in Williamsburg. We (www.punkrope.com) now do a monthly happy hour here (first Wed of the month) and so far its been a huge hit. Geoff and Megan have been incredibly generous with specials and are even donating 6 bar tabs to our big event-The Punk Rope Games-on May 22. What I like about the bar is that it's very versatile. You can go to have an intimate chat with a close friend or a date. It works well for large groups like ours. And it's fun for those who want to play foosball, Wii, or darts. Absolutely LOVE The Gibson, it's my local and I go there probably a little too often. They are dog friendly, which is a big reason I go there so much, my dog Jameson is able to chill out with me and the bartenders love him. The drinks are great and it's the perfect place during the winter since it's quite warm and in the summer they open up the big windows. They have darts and foosball and two projectors. My only wish is that they would put commentary on during big sporting events and update the quality of the projectors. I'd love to come here for NFL and soccer games etc. read more

I came here for the drinks, but stayed for the dogs. This is an awesome dog friendly bar that I stumbled upon while trying to run away from the crowds at Berry Park on a sunny Saturday. This place is so chill. There was room to sit, I posted up right by the large open windows that you can rest your legs on along with friends. Drinks were tasty and affordable. Good location, foosball table, and a couple projector TVs for the game. There's usually at least a small crowd and a good vibe but it generally isn't packed. There is a nice little back patio for a breath of fresh air (or smoke, depending). Overall, the Gibson is a decent place to hang out, grab a coupla drinks, and figure out your next move. That said... do not be fooled by the fact that this place is sort of trying to be a cocktail bar. Yes, there is a moderately-stocked bar and a cocktail menu. It's not horrible, but the flavor combinations and spirit selections are somewhat perplexing. Execution is also pretty inconsistent. I reverted to ordering Old Fashioned's and it seems that I've never had the same one twice. Not sure how they do that but it might have something to do with the crappy house bourbon they use... ask for a whiskey upgrade and things can get a bit pricey. Just give the people the Rittenhouse Rye they deserve! If this place upped their cocktail game or just focused on being a regular bar I'd bump them to four... but in this era such cocktail-related transgressions will not be forgiven. read more

My friend celebrated her birthday here less than a week after they opened. It's very open, spacious, with a decor that makes you feel warm and cozy despite the openness of the room. It was darkly lit, mostly with candles and back-lighting, and the windows were open to the street. I'm told that whoever opened this place had some connection to Park Bar in Manhattan, but don't quote me on that. For now, you should probably expect that it'll be a bit empty, partly because of the sheer size and the feeling of [yup, here's this word again] openness, and because word is still getting out about The Gibson. The max capacity on the Saturday night I was there was probably 10 people, by the time I left at 11;45pm. As for drinks, all I had was a great glass of Sauvignon Blanc, but I do know that the bartender got creative for my friend's drink, which he basically invented for her. The music was random, but in a good way: some 70s, 80s, 90s, and current stuff. Definitely not a dive. Great place for a date or for a big group. Not pretentious, but still classy. A totally decent bar, especially for those times when Spike Hill is crowded and blasting eurotrance, or when the Turkey's Nest smells too much like stale beer and fresh vomit. Low irritating hipster quotient, and far enough away from the subway to keep the tourist factor in check. Prices are fair and pours are generous. There is a good selection of wines, especially remarkable for the North Side/Greenpoint neighborhood (which seems to be ruled by vodka tonics and Bud Light). There's a lovely backyard (serving grilled meats on the weekends) AND a foosball table. There's a jukebox but most of the time I'm there the bartenders are playing an awesome mix of forgotten pop and metal from the early 1980s. By far, the best feature of The Gibson is the windows in the front are open to Bedford Ave, providing the perfect vantage for extended viewing of the open air fashion catwalk. It's a great place to plan your evening of debauchery and it's also a good choice for a quiet unhassled nightcap. Rarely crowded and always chill. Subtract one star for the fact that I've never once got a buyback at The Gibson! read more

I'm not really sure what this place is. Is it a sports bar? A lounge? A gaming spot? If it's a sports bar, then this is one of the saddest sports bars I've been to. They only had two projectors in the entire place and no TVs. One was showing NCAA basketball and the other had NHL on. Neither of the projectors seemed HD quality and one of them was actually blurry. I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't my eyes but I doubt would my eyes show me blurry images on just one side. I don't know how the food is but how do you feel about some random food vendor coming up to you and offering you empanadas that he pulls out from his suspicious looking bag? Yes, this actually happened while we were inside. I'm all for a free market economy but I'd also rather see an establishment sell their own empanadas. The whiskey selection, though vast, isn't particularly impressive and this seems to be general theme of this place. They are doing a few different things but none well in particular. If you don't care about surrounding yourself with anything of good quality, you will fit right in with the rest of the 20 somethings at this bar. read more

To start, the featured drink, which I ordered, was no more. I am ordering for myself and my friend so, I order a Boddingtons which is given to me two thirds full for him and as I am deciding on a choice for me the male bartender who is helping me passes me off to the female one despite there being no one else ordering and goes out to smoke. I got a light pour Jameson rocks. I paid with a $20 and tipped $2 leaving me with $4. A whiskey and a fraction of a beer for $14? The only saving grace was there was a foosball table and that were VERY generous with their pours to the girl in our party. also, shout out to that bartender smoking outside who was then bitching that yelp gives anyone who wants one a chance to bitch and moan. Bob Gibson was known as a great competitor- and exciting player who would keep his opponants on edge by throwing brushback pitches. The Gibson is known as a great bar and drinking spot by some- mainly boring people in their late 20's who like to mix lounges with sports bars- the outcome is inevitably equal to a dive bar but with nice windows and tables that dont rock. The real reason why I dont like this place is the fact that I went in their becuase of the sign advertising $3 Bud amongst others- note: no time frame given- when this occurs it is logical to assume the special is ongoing,,, So after asking for said Bud- a bottle is brought and $4 is asked of me- *sigh* hand over the 4 bones- well ill stay for this and leave. Now the next part is what really baffled me. I have worked for tips in the service industry for the past 10 years and have never done or seen anything like the following- Instead of giving me my dollar, the bartender shot me a look from afar and placed it in the tip jar..... okay- well I aws going to give it to him anyway so forget it- after some deliberation I thought- NO- F this guy and asked him what was up. He said "oh- sorry about that" and gave me a dollar, which went right into my pocket. Score Me:1 Gibson Bar: 0 sorry guys that was pretty classless- albeit only for a buck I called my friends and we met somewhere else- Plus the "bigscreen" showing the Lakers game was the size of a large Cathode Ray Tube from early nineties - with quality matching that of that era. read more

This would be a dangerous bar for me to live closer to - tasty cocktails and nice atmosphere. The back room amped up the dark classiness of it's former incarnation as Sound Fix's bar. The front room (from the Bedford entrance) is nice, cozy and offer food and more cocktails. It's new, new to me at least. I have to admit, I always walked by this place and wrote it off as a 'new bar' (i.e. not Rosemary's or the Turkey's Nest) but someone who's taste I trust recommended it, and it's a solid spot. This place is awesome. Inside, it's like a different world. It's just such a detailed speak easy. The staff/bartenders can make you anything and can recommend drinks off the top of their heads. If you're in the mood for a really low key night with a down-to-earth crowd (which I usually am) and you live in the neighborhood (which I do) this place will not let you down. I was going to give this place 4 stars because there's nothing particularly special about this bar... then I remembered there is: The BARTENDERS. They are some of the coolest, sweetest, sensible guys I've ever met. They are so accommodating and when I get drunk and yap about nonsense, they pretend to care. My friends love this place too. It's their "go to" bar... which means they GO TO the Gibson at least once a week. read more

Last Friday evening, after a movie and drive through Brooklyn, I stumbled upon this place while walking around Williamsburg to find a quiet place to grab a nice draft beer. I sat near the big open window at the front and checked out their draft beer selection, and although my first choice (something from Gun Hill Brewery) was unavailable, my second choice was delicious. I don't remember the name, but I had two pints and loved it. The place was pretty quiet and chill for a Friday around 10-12, which was exactly the kind of dark, un-popping place I was looking for that evening. I'll definitely go back if I'm ever in Williamsburg again. read more

This is a decent spot to watch sports on the projectors, play a game of pool and throw back a few well selected craft brews. The only place in the entire city that I've ever found Victory Lager and Cisco Grey Lady on draft. Prices are fair, not too expensive, but also not cheap. If your the type that just likes to enjoy a few and not be stepped on, pushed or if your slightly claustrophobic, do not come here after 9pm on a Friday or Saturday. This is when all the smelly, ironic, snippy, trust fund hipsters show up and start pushing their way towards the bar, knocking over pint glasses and dry humping you off of your bar stool. The bartenders are down to earth and prompt. The beer and bottle selection is fairly esoteric and unique. The location is obviously good. I tend to prefer the spots in this neighborhood over LES or UES because they are less crowded and the service is usually slightly better. This place is ideal for late afternoon or early evenings, having 2-3 beers. It's not particularly great for any one specific thing. If your a spoiled trust fund twenty something looking for a classy place with reserved tables and fancy salad's and wines, this is not the place for you. It's closer to being a dumpy, trendy wannabe sports bar, which is great, and there is a certain charm and legitimacy to that. read more

So, today's my birthday. No one would know, why would I mention it. I was walking to the train and decided to grab a drink after a meditation event I was at to decompress. The two bartenders were lovely. Not incredibly attentive, considering it was dead but they were cool. I'd come back again. The barback was a DICK. Totally rude. Totally in his own world. I asked politely three times "excuse me." He never looked over although I was one of four people in the entire venue, then was forced to get up to grab the female bartender for a drink (she was lovely). Then when people he knew showed up, he sat on the other side of the bar with them, totally engaged. Total shame and kind of made me feel really sad on my birthday. I mean I'll survive, but it should be a lesson to just be kind whenever is possible and you also don't know what someone's going through. Some kindness today was definitely needed. read more

He's got tats and huge muscles and we're thinkin to ourselves "sick, this bro is gonna deliver" and he sure did. Says his name is Corey and asks us we want. Burbs gets some Pinot Grigio, perfect pour. my turn, I order a cider. This guy, Corey, gives it to me with ICE. ice... Awesome. Burbs and I just sitting there enjoying the moment and Corey Asks us how were doin, says something about how pretty the weather was. We were speechless. Wow what a good time. JOE MAMA! Yes, I ventured outside of my Manhattanite snobby comfort zone but it took a bit of convincing. Roughly 4 blocks from the Bedford L train station, not a bad commute at all (1 stop) from NYC. As soon as I walked in, I thought I had been transported onto the set of Dumb and Dumber. It looked like the inside of a log cabin at a ski resort. The drink specials are written on the glass behind the bar. I tried Joe Mama's Milk Coffee Stout ($6) which was interesting to say the least. Mixed feelings about this place. Had a great drunken chat with aforementioned big beardy guy as he made me quite possibly the best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had (though, so spicy ay ay ay!!). It's too bad that one bartender there definitely plays favorites. If you're not one of them, or in the same party as one of them, you will get grumpy service. C'mon dude. I don't know what it's like being a bartender, but don't make other people pay for your inability to have patience for sloppy drunks. This was my first time visiting this bar on and it was pretty dope. I only stopped in initially on a Friday night to catch the end of a nba playoff game and wait for shawty to meet me in Williamsburg yet once she arrived we ended up staying there the rest of the night. Inside they had two projector screens showing sports, a bar, and high top tables. There was also an outdoors area that I'll maybe sit at next time. We sat inside, had fairly strong drinks and good conversation in a dim, not too loud or crowded hipster environment.
