Finally a waitress came over, poured water and we asked for two cups of coffee. She brought them right out, still no menues, and both cups of coffee were cold to luke warm at best. The guy who wouldn't get off his butt to seat us came up and asked if we were ready to order even though we still had no menues, and we told him our coffee was cold and he copped an attitude and that was it we got up and left. We stopped at the local store to pick up a snack and told the lady about our experience and she said that many of the people working there act that way and she never recommends that place. We went and had dinner with our family. The service was good. Our waitress was extremely nice. The food was horrible. Not the way it was ordered. The steak has zero seasoning. Over cooked. The fries were literally frozen fries with no seasoning. They couldn't get the drinks right. Out of a ton of ingredients. The list goes on. Save your money and go get good with flavor. read more

My wife and I stayed at the Gibson Inn on a Thursday and Friday night for a short trip to Apalachicola. I almost booked somewhere else, but chose this hotel due to all the great reviews. The Gibson Inn lived up to the hype!! The stay was nice, the room was nice, and the location was nice. The Gibson Inn is a charming, historic building that has been well taken care of and includes all the modern amenities you would come to expect from a top tier hotel. We stayed in a third floor corner room, which was very nice and spacious. The location was perfect - within walking distance of everything in downtown Apalachicola. The staff was friendly and helpful. My wife and I really liked the period decor throughout the property. It was very well done, with every detail thought of. There were two minor things that detracted from our stay. The Gibson Inn, although located within walking distance of everything, is right next to a major highway, Our room was right next to the highway, so the traffic noise was loud. Really loud. You can probably "fix" this by booking a room away from the highway. Surprisingly, though, I didn't here any guests. We walked out of the room one morning to hear our neighbor loudly talking on the phone. We could hear him in the hallway, but not in the room. The other thing is the pre-stay paperwork. I suppose they need to protect themselves, and have probably have had things stolen in the past, but all the paperwork I signed stating I wouldn't steal anything was a little much. Overall, I'm glad we stayed at the Gibson Inn. Walking around Apalachicola, can't really see where another hotel could beat it. We'll stay again if we ever make it back to the area! read more

Wish I could have stayed longer! I was just passing through for the night and decided to stay at this amazing little spot and omg was it amazing! My photos do it no justice. It felt more like I was somewhere in the Carolina's than in Florida. The building is over 100 years old and you can just feel the history around you while walking through the creeping original wood floors. Plus it's got that great grandma's attic smell in the hallways. The rooms had all been recently renovated with a warm old coastal feel. If I lived in the area I would definitely be getting married there because the rest of the property is just beautiful and a perfect venue for a wedding or party ! On top of it all the staff is incredibly friendly everyone I met alway was helpful and greeted me with a warm welcome !!! read more

Stopped in for lunch a few days ago while visiting Apalachacoa and it was a lovely day to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and have a nice lunch. I had the Monterrey Chicken Sandwich and a friend got the Club - we both enjoyed our meals on the outside patio and have no problem recommending them for a meal. The service was good - the only drawback was they were out of a few things, but the waitress advised us up front so it was not that big of a deal. Lovely spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of a lovely small town! read more

The WORST! The people who work at this hotel are impolite and awful to deal with. I called to ask the hotel to shift my arrival date by just three days. No response to my email so I called. The first person said no and hung up on me. The manager who was equally as rude said no, that the terms of my contract said I could not modify my reservation - despite calling many months in advance. I was not asking for a refund or a reduction in the rate. An increase in the per night rate for the difference was not offered. Do they know they are in the hospitality industry? The reviews are full of complaints about rude staff. Pay attention to them. Guests beware. read more

We came down for a Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary. We stayed here over 15 years ago for a previous anniversary and loved our time. Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our veranda room was comfortable and quiet. We enjoyed dessert at the bar (the baked chocolate chip cookie with ice cream was divine) and also had breakfast at The Franklin Cafe the next morning. The breakfast was delicious but the service was even better. I can't say enough good things about our short stay. We also enjoyed strolling through town partaking in a few beers at Oyster City Brewery and the High Five Dive Bar and some of the tastiest oysters ever at The Station Raw Bar. My husband and I planned to stay at the Gibson Inn for 2 nights with our puppy. We wanted a vacation where we could relax, sleep late, and visit St. George Island. We chose this inn based on many good reviews, but should have paid better attention to the poor reviews. The city of Apalachicola is very slow and quaint, with many little shops and restaurants. The good... 1) check in was very easy, 2) room was clean, 3) they are pet-friendly. The bad... 1) The exterior and surrounding landscaping lacked curb appeal. In addition, it had very little grass for the puppy to do his business. There was a lot of dirt, grit, and sand. There are a few parking places along the street in front and side of the inn. 2) The room was very small, and smelled musty. They informed us at check-in that the room they had slated for us had a leak in the a/c, so we were getting an "upgrade". The "upgrade" was a room that has access to a shared porch. Someone wrote another review and said their room was the size of a postage stamp; and that is a great description. We wonder what the non-upgraded room was like. 3) The walls are paper-thin. We could hear someone next door "pass gas", and every time someone used the ice machine, or shut a door. So, it was difficult to get a good night's sleep. 4) They are doing construction on the property but did not disclose that when we booked the stay. Construction lasts all day. And it was literally right outside our door where they were using saws and hammering. We put up with it yesterday, but by the time it started this morning, we were tired from lack of sleep, and could not take one more day with the construction noise, so we decided to leave after staying one night. 5) I went to tell the front desk that we would be checking out early because of the construction noise. The desk attendant told me she would get my "folio" ready. When I returned with the keys, she gave me the receipt. I noticed we were charged for 2 nights. Upon asking for clarification, she said it was because I did not cancel within 48 hours prior to the arrival. I explained that we were leaving because of the construction noise, which was not any fault of ours. The attendant was unapologetic. She said her manager was in a meeting, but that she could have them call me to see if they can waive that cancellation fee. Of course, I have not received a call; and probably will not. For a place that has been in business for 116 years, you would think they'd have their customer service down to a science. I would not recommend the Gibson Inn to any of my friends or family. read more

We've come here for many years. And the experience has fluctuated in terms of comfort. The beds are always wonderful. The rooms are always clean. The staff is always friendly. But if you're staying for several days, there is no iron in the room , there is a coffee machine, but it's espresso and very teeny cups, the air conditioning has a fan that blows straight on you and you wake up with the sniffles. There's construction next door and so you hear people arguing in Spanish and large noises starting fairly early in the morning. Also, what I think is the staff arguing in English. In the past, there is always been a little touches that were commiserate with the extra price that you pay for this historic inn. Our experience last year with the Frank And café was so disappointing in terms of service and what was offered we didn't go this year. There's plenty of other places in town. read more

We stayed in the older section. The hotel is constructing a large section and has done a great job keeping architecture standards with new construction. We did not hear any construction noise. Yes the rooms are smaller but are fine and seem expected with an older hotel. The check in process was certainly different. I received an email and had to fill out all my information online, which was a repeat of what I entered when making the reservation. I then had to enter credit card info plus upload photos of my drivers license. Typically these items are checked in person when arriving at the hotel. The website said no information was retained after our stay, however we have no way of knowing that is the case. As other reviewers have said, the rooms are noisy. Opening closing doors etc are constantly heard. Very surprising to me was that the hotel elected to move furniture and seemingly deep clean wood floors in the room directly above us at around 8 am on a Sunday morning. The noise was incredible. I went upstairs to inquire what was happening. While the hotel staff was apologetic, they seemed legitimately unaware that people might be sleeping at this time of the morning or simply trying to enjoy their $300 room. On the positive side, the bar was great and the hotel is very well maintained in a good location. People were friendly. In the end we might consider staying again but it's not a certainty. read more

We WERE pulling for you... I believe an appropriate title as I WAS pulling for this hotel. I left a review with lots of compliments and a few criticisms. The snarky response I received on Trip Advisor was very unprofessional and contained personal digs 1- there is a Bentley in the add, no Bentley. Their response " it's in the shop" . Nope, many other reviews contain the same question so is it false advertising or is it in the shop? If so, it's been in the shop for a while. 2- no pets allowed in the lobby unless it's a service animal. Sorry Gibson Inn that was an emotional support animal your employee had in the lobby not service animal. My animal and any animal can be emotional support without question. You can't have it both ways. 3- lack of hot water ? No response 4- no fans on the porch - No response 5- extremely small rooms - we love old historic hotels but postage stamp rooms smaller than NYC is not acceptable. For 399.00 a night??? Come on. Check out some of the rooms in other historic hotels -please. I have actually never stayed in a room that small in any historic hotel. 6- our dinner was unacceptable with an over cooked steak all coming at a high price tag 168.00 for two. No response at all. We are aware of the problems in the service industry currently but this needs addressing. The waitress was awesome and did her best to make our evening special. 7- we loved the staff here and love the area but do not pay the high prices this hotel is asking unless you plan to be disappointed. There is no breakfast offered in the hotel ( sugary prepackaged pastries only ) or anywhere close and the standards and rooms just should not command the prices they are asking. They are not concerned with making any changes and in addition sent an extremely snarky response to my review. I travel almost half the year and stay in hotels all over the south. For the quality and service, consider that this hotel has no rules. (For those of you wanting to bring your pets) We probably should have read up more on this Inn because a "sea view" room consists of looking at the coastal byway bridge and the Franklin County Courthouse.... Couldn't see much water. The architecture is definitely aged. The remodel Consists of reconstructed decor and half-ass repair. For the price I guess we expected more. Parking on the street. No valet. I have been wanting to stay at the Gibson and now we have - it was worth the wait! It was wonderful! We have stayed at rehabbed historic hotels before, but only one other was as satisfying as this one. This was charming but modernized in the right places (bathroom! linens! tv!). There's a white noise machine by the bed, and you'll appreciate it because there isn't any soundproofing between floors or in the halls. It's an old hotel, and that's part of the frustration and the charm. We were in a 2nd floor room, and the first night we slept so well. There were some ambient noises (white noise machine to the rescue!) but they didn't drag on into the night. It's a quiet town, and that's good because the Gibson is on the main street into Apalach. The second night, there were people in the room over ours, and they were noisy. They kept dropping or slamming something, and it was more than the noise machine could compensate for. But again, the noises didn't last all night (unlike some hotels I've been to) and most of the other guests were considerate. It's just clear that some people have never understood that noises carry and not to slam doors. We survived that fine. The staff at the Gibson are wonderful! Anything we needed, they supplied, and they were so polite and friendly. Some things to realize - there is no elevator. This circa 1907 hotel has stairs. Watch out for the top stair as you reach the 2nd floor from the lobby. The top step has a slope to it and it's disorienting at first. It's an old hotel that's been modernized - the bathroom in our room was beautiful and nicely appointed. There's a 'coffee maker' (for pods) in the room but it only makes a thimbleful (or seemingly) of water at a time. The front desk staff was kind enough to fill my travel mug with hot water (for tea) from the kitchen. The mattress was very comfortable but slightly too soft for even me - it enveloped us and while we slept well, it was hard to extract myself in the morning. We didn't eat at the Gibson, but we did enjoy several meals at downtown cafes. We look forward to returning and staying here again! read more

Apalachicola area is a "breakfast desert", extremely Anti-breakfast. Had to cross the 7 mile bridge to even be offered any chance at breakfast. (Then only at a Mexican restaurant). What's up with that? The Gibson Hotel (very expensive) had no breakfast, and no suggestions. Doesn't Apalachicola know this is part of the reasonable expectations of the ordinary tourist? The night before I called restaurant after restaurant trying to find one with breakfast. (Websites and Google still think there's breakfast). Nothing. We ordered: Franklin Salad nice cold greens with arugula, very nice fresh chevre and halved small tomatoes and a lovely vinaigrette Catch of the day Cobia very nicely seasoned, cooked well with a lovely lemony thyme sauce Broccoli Rabe was very large and not cooked through Apalachee Bay Pasta very nicely prepared Steak Frites Nicely seasoned over cooked steak, very roughly made chimichurri, nice fries but a mess for fine dining PAN-ROASTED RED SNAPPER & CORNBREAD PANZANELLA $42.00 Toasted Cornbread, Kalamata Olives, Blistered Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Pickled Red Onion, Garden Italian Vinaigrette This was the most confusing dish A Tuscan panzanella has soaked stale bread and a hodgepodge of veg wet with vinegar and herbs. I was interested in seeing what the southern take could be using a pan-roasted piece of fish and cornbread. Since this was listed under the entrees it was assumed to be a hot dish. The "Toasted Cornbread" turned out to be very hard one and a half square inch croutons. Far too large to eat and silly to try to cut without cracking and popping all over the table. The pitted kalamata olives were just tossed on the plate. Usually in an upscale restaurant charging these prices they take the time to crush the olives and remove the pits or at least slice the olives in half. The baby spinach, pickled onions and not so blistered tomatoes (try using the broiler) were very cold. There were no cucumbers. The Snapper was cooked perfectly with a wonderful crispy outside layer and moist flesh. Maybe try to sell it under Salads. For deserts we had sad boring choices...we ordered White Chocolate Bread Pudding dence Salted Caramel Cheesecake another weird one uncooked graham cracker crust and coddled filling, lumpy weird texture. We stayed just one night here on our ride trip vacation along the Florida Gulf coast. Very convenient to everything in this little town. Due to COVID there was contactless check in and out with a code on the suite door. We stayed in king suite with a porch and rockers. Room appeared freshly remodeled with nice touches and great a/c. The bar at hotel was open and the bartender kept us happy with cold cocktails for happy hour. We'd come back! read more

Gibson Inn is one of the few remaining grande old wooden structure hotels left overs from the early 1900's. Actually, 1901 to be exact. It's well maintained, neat, clean, friendly and just being there takes your imagination back to an era and time you've read about, heard about, but never experienced. Staying at the Gibson is about as close as one can come to experiencing those days. The lobby is huge, the bar is grand, the and staircase to the upper floors wide. There are no elevators as in modern structures, but there are porches all over the place, huge porches with rocking chairs, both on the first and on the second floor. Just sitting back, rocking the time away with a cool drink in the heart of Apalachicola is a unique and different treat. The other good thing about the Gibson is its location which is within easy walking distance to the oyster/seafood restaurants on Water Street. read more

We had an issue we wanted to discuss as we were leaving but were told that the manager was off that day and would call "first thing" the next morning. She did not call at all. We called back the next day and were told that the manager was at lunch but would call after she was back on the clock. She did not. We called one last time the following day and were told that the managers were all in a staff meeting but would definitely get back to us. Still no return call. Tucked into the splendid architectural oasis that is the historic town of Apalachicola on the pristine curve of the panhandle, the Gibson Inn is an iconic establishment. It is a true testimony to a by-gone era - when fishing (specifically oyster raising) and all the assorted industries that stemmed from seafood, were the dominant economic power in the area. Today, it feels like the sleepy towns of the panhandle rely more on tourism than the seafood that comes from the Gulf of Mexico. Alas, the Gibson Inn is a must-stop spot and worth an overnight visit. Its not luxurious - but it is comfortable. The rooms are well apportioned and maintained. The general atmosphere is one of southern charm and sleepy, laid-back laissez faire. The restaurant is a great local scene - complete with a wrap around porch and rocking chairs. The food is amazingly good and takes a page from more well recognized restaurants in southern "foodie" cities like New Orleans and Birmingham. There is a full bar and the restaurant offers a couple of different regional craft beers. The best part of our stay was sitting on the porch overlooking the bay with the bridge spanning into the distance and the cool evening breeze just picking up - sipping a couple of drinks and enjoying the southern hospitality. My husband insisted we stay at the Gibson Inn for his 68th birthday. I reserved a deluxe veranda room months in advance. A week before we arrived I called to confirm our room! When we arrived we were informed that our room had maintenance issues. We would be placed in an upgraded suite. The issues began when the receptionist told us the room she was placing us in was an upgrade but was less expensive and she would credit us an entire $10 a night. It was then I knew that the upgrade was a lie. Our stay then became a nightmare. The room was on the bottom floor with a small bathroom next to the party room! We informed the receptionist that the room was unacceptable. We were offered the Captains Room with no veranda. The room was nice despite the constant cars on the Main Street that kept us awake most of the night. The next morning I ask for a copy of my charges. There had been no $10 credit and the room we were in was being charged at the same rate as the original booking. Researching the website I uncovered that the room we were given was substantially cheaper than our booking. From this point on our interaction with this Inn was less than satisfactorily. We travel extensively and never have I encountered such a lack of customer service. The receptionist was not genuine and spent much of the day outside smoking. When we checked out she informed us that she had no idea how we had several pending unauthorized charges and was not competent with the accounting features. We were informed that the manager would handle our issues. Several days later I called inquiring about the incorrect charges. A manager (Steve) called me and left a message that we had been credited $154 for the downgrade. Never once did he apologize for the bait and switch of our room and apparent attempt to overcharge us. The inn was sparingly decorated for Christmas and upon our departure the lobby was covered with sheets as the ceiling was being scraped! This was a week before Christmas. The food was good and one evening we had a wonderful waiter that informed us he was leaving. Appalachicola has not recovered from the hurricane and many of the places we loved are closed. Most restaurants are also closed Sunday and Monday! The room was well decorated and we would have had a good visit if we were treated with respect. We came to the Inn because it was reviewed with praise in Guns and Gardens. We loved the Inn, but were disappointed in the staff. My husband and I have spent many years caring for those that suffer. All we expected is integrity and we did not receive that from this establishment. You never know who you are caring for so care for everyone as they were your family. It was not that the Inn was not adequate, it was the manner in which the situation was handled. May I recommend the Henderson Inn in Destin. read more

This hotel got my car towed, they never alerted me of my car getting towed either. The manager was insanely rude to me when I tried to question the situation; the cop placed her was also a jerk and towed my car for its "hitch being too far out." It's a historic inn restored to time period beauty and grace. The staff are very professional and kind. The interior of the inn is dark woods, old pictures, a beautiful bar and the rooms are decorated in the same time period themes. The restaurant is FABULOUS! My server was Emily last night and she was a sweetheart- loved her! I ordered mussels and the cheese tray- off the chain good. If I could give the establishment more than 5 stars; I would!
