View of a dumpster, broken latch on a French door meaning always open. Beds won't go to the wall. Dirty shower

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking on this review. I'll just add that when I told the front desk that I knew they were doing some updates but the room wasn't quite ready to be charging people...she said "I'm glad you have an opinion and I'll let the manager know" in a very condescending tone. The manager then followed us out as we were leaving and said "hey! I hear you have a problem?!" I then walked in the room, showed him the issues that I, as a paying customer, had and he decided that "they didn't need MY KIND around there and to never come back. He wasted his breath because coming back to this 1 star at best place was never a thought in my mind after 5 seconds of opening the door to the room. Oh and speaking of opening the door... that's exactly what an employee did at 9:30am WITHOUT KNOCKING, as my fiance was on the bed in a towel putting on makeup.

We spent 3 nights here (Thursday-Saturday) in hot August 2019 and enjoyed our stay. The room (Dunes) was comfortable, including the temperature and the bed, and it was quiet. The inn is walking distance convenient to shopping and dining on the island including the Island Grocery right next door and the public beach area where the lighthouse is located. Sitting on the balcony or porch in the cooler evening with breezes from the Gulf was pleasant. You were serenaded by the music from three different locations and yet it wasn't too loud. You can even get a glimpse of the Gulf and the bay from the second floor balcony. This is one of the earliest accommodations built on the island for those who don't want to rent a whole house so there is a little wear and tear. It is a wood frame building built in the style of an inn you might have seen in earlier years at many Florida coastal locations so you will hear some creaks and the sound of people walking on wood. The manager said they had planned some renovations for the slower season last fall and winter but Hurricane Michael put the kibbosh on that as they ended up housing lots of the workers who came to the area to make repairs to communities further west that were heavily damaged. They will try again this slower season. Management and staff were very friendly and accommodating and several times emphasized that if we needed anything just let them know. If you arrive when no one is sitting at the desk, their phone number is right there to call them and they come right out and check you in. For those without a cell phone, there is a desk phone to make the call. They have a pretty no nonsense policy about those who can't maintain a reasonable amount of quiet during their stay. It is quiet time beginning at 10 pm and rowdiness will get you a warning and after that you will be asked to leave with no refund. The policy is clearly stated on the check in paperwork. As I said, our stay was quiet including no sounds from the outside once you entered the inn. Parking was in front of the inn and on the side and although the front parking lot is shared with the grocery store, we never had a problem parking in front. There is no elevator. You have to climb stairs to get to the front entrance and if you don't have a room on that floor then you have more stairs to climb. There is a ramp at the back of the inn that provides access to the one room on the first floor that accommodates the physically challenged. For this older, overweight and physically unfit fellow it was a little work getting our stuff into and out of the inn but nothing I couldn't handle. Prices are reasonable for what it costs all over the Florida coast to stay at the beach and they have a Yelp check in discount for single night stays. I must admit I had some reservations about staying here when I looked at the other Yelp reviews but we needed a room on the island so I booked it anyway and hoped for the best. Now that we have stayed here I can say that if you are not expecting The Ritz, this is a very nice place to stay and I would stay here again.

The standings water at top stairs.

Stayed here on business (I'm a travel writer for a national travel service) and at first found this Inn very charming. Checking in the staff was very pleasant and efficient. The Inn is perfectly located in the middle of the island with easy access to shops and restaurants. The issues began even before we reached our room. As we were climbing the stairs, we were warned by fellow guests of the standing water at the top that they had already reported to management earlier that morning. There was no evidence any efforts to clean it up or signs warning of the water. Sometimes things like this happen in hotels; however at the top of the stairs is a MAJOR safety hazard. The management should have at least made some effort to warn guests. The room was adequate and since we were only there for one night, it fit our needs. Although, my husband said the couch looked and felt like something they picked up off the side of the road. Issue number two showed up later in the night in the form of cockroaches. And where you see one cockroach, there are more. I am a native Floridian and understand completely the nature of all our little insect friends. That doesn't mean I should see them in the hotel room we are paying over $300 to stay in. The final issue was when I woke and noticed that there was something that very much looked like mold on the bedroom wall. I hadn't noticed it before since we checked in during the later afternoon and the lighting wasn't so bright. I fully intended to speak to the management on my way out, however there was no one at the desk when we "checked out". We were to leave our key in a box on the desk. I waited as long as I could to see if any hotel representative appeared, but no one did before I had to leave. Since I booked our stay through Hotels.com, I called to share my story and asked for a partial refund. The request was flatly denied by the the hotel. I can only interpret that as the hotel's lack of interest in customer service. I hope that these issues are addressed for the sake of future guests.

    Missing security latch

This was a grand inn on the Island for years. Spent a couple vacations there. Went back this week to find it run down and in a state of disrepair. Some repairs started but not finished, some not even started. Room had no a/c as it is run from a thermostat in the hallway. Patched areas on walls. New mirror not the same size as the old one, but no repair around it. Wires dangling in the hallway ceiling. Lots of dirt on baseboards and in corners. Lots of screws and nails protruding from walls. Missing door security latch altogether. Door doesn't fit properly and had to be forced (loudly) to open. Don't believe the photos on their website!

Corner of the room has boarded up hole and broom /trash

Rip off rates for a run down motel. Old worn bed covers, old paint left on walls and boarded up holes in walls. Trash and broom left in room. Headboard old and did not fit the bed and bunkbeds looked hand made. $280 a night is ridiculous for this place but they have a monopoly on the island so get away with it without updating the place. We had nowhere else to go...

No time to ponder that as a very large palmetto bug runs across the wall next to me. I'm phobic about those roaches but finally managed to dispatch it with my shoe. Some of it may still be in the rug with who knows what else. My wife takes a shower and the water stinks to high heavens of sulphur, or something like it. She freaks out but I tell her that in some areas water can have an oder. We brush our teeth, next morning brush our teeth again and wash up, water still smells to high heavens. We go to lobby for breakfast (arrive at 9:31 am per my iPhone), breakfast closes at 9:30 so out of luck there. My wife mentions the awful smell to the two clerks on duty. They ask, weren't you told about the water? No. They show us a bulletin from the city warning people NOT TO USE THE WATER unless you boil it for a full minute. Including not to brush your teeth. First we heard of this, night clerk failed to advise us. But why aren't notices out in rooms? Why not give us bottled water? How are we to shower or brush our teeth? And we were charged full fare. We both had stomach and intestinal issues for the next two days. So no, I don't recommend this place.

We couldn't find the cafe and asked one of the hotel workers/maid where it was and she completely ignored us and then pretended like she couldn't understand English after asking three different times where was the cafe or restaurant. We finally found the cafe ourselves walked in looking for some help and saw a gentleman sitting at a table with another employee talking, he looked over at us and said just sit wherever. He didn't even bother to get up from the table where he was sitting talking, no help no nothing. We sat ourselves at a table no menus nothing. Finally a waitress came over, poured water and we asked for two cups of coffee. She brought them right out, still no menues, and both cups of coffee were cold to luke warm at best. The guy who wouldn't get off his butt to seat us came up and asked if we were ready to order even though we still had no menues, and we told him our coffee was cold and he copped an attitude and that was it we got up and left. We stopped at the local store to pick up a snack and told the lady about our experience and she said that many of the people working there act that way and she never recommends that place. I can see why and we'll never stop, stay, or recommend.
