I have been to better pubs on both sides of the Atlantic and I have been to worse. Dog and Duck fits squarely in the middle. After a long day roaming London, I was looking for a pint or two and a really good traditional pie for supper. I was excited walking up as the after work crowd was hopping and a lot of fun. Went upstairs to eat and it was a totally different vibe. Quieter and laid back. Just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately the beer selection wasn't great, it could be because it is affiliated with a brewery chain. The pie was very disappointing. Crust was tough and very little inside the pie. Will be on the lookout for a better option next time! read more

Love this pub. I can only speak to the food served upstairs from the kitchen of this very old, small and cozy establishment. I went straight upstairs to the dining area and had an amazing beef pie. It was on the daily special menu. And it was excellent. Really nicely done pie (beef rib & brisket) with a very light and flaky delicious crust. Lovely potatoes and carrots to accompany. This review is a long time coming, but I got to enjoy Dog and Duck just over two years ago. My sister and I had just arrived in London, our hotel was right around the corner, and we were starving. The service was very friendly, and the food was absolutely wonderful (I got the steak and ale pie, and she got fish and chips). The seating areas are cozy, which is different than I'm used to in America, but that was okay. I didn't get to spend much time in London, but I am glad I got to visit this restaurant. I would definitely go back when I'm not jet lagged. read more

Excellent little pub with some great food and drinks. Popped in while we were in Chelsea for a bite and ended up staying longer as it was such a great location. Downstairs was full so we went up to the cozy upper floor and took a table. The bar there wasn't open, but we had no issues ordering downstairs and having our food and drinks brought up. Had the Fuller's caramel seasonal and the wife had the rhubarb lager (which was amazing). We each ordered a pie; I had the steak and ale and she had the chicken. Both were very tasty with plenty of filling in a wonderful crust. The sides of mashed and peas were also quite good. Definitely a quaint and typical London pub that is worth a visit for drinks, food or both. read more

Located in central Soho, Dog and Duck is a fun place to have a pint. We stood outside in early November, and it was a little brisk, but they have heat lamps (if you're lucky enough to get near one). I'm revealing the American in me here, but the fact that they allow you to bring real glassware out on the street blows my mind. So civilized! read more

Absolutely the most delightful Fish 'n Chips on this planet! I've had Fish 'n Chips the world over, but nothing beats Fish 'n Chips in London! And Dog & Duck does it right! Dog & Duck was one of the first places I bookmarked when I knew I was staying in SOHO, west-end of London. So I had a blind date with Dog & Duck before she knew it! ;) Located in the SOHO district (there's a another location elsewhere) it was only a few blocks from my doorstep. As I approached I noticed the familiar Dog & Duck sign! And personally it's the best sign I've seen in my lifetime! Okay, maybe I am getting overly excited, but I love patina and the Victorian era, and this pub has been serving Londoners since the 1873! I wonder if Jack the R. had a chip here? Hmm, I can say George Orwell and Madonna were regulars! I walk up Victorian steps *creak creak*... I enter to an empty restaurant and a friendly face. I am greeted by Anna: the Bartender, the Waitress, the Host. She's all of the above and now my new friend. She hands me the menu and mentions how slow it is w/ the breaking news of the pandemic now hitting Europe. Typically Londoners are filling the seats and drinking on the pub sidewalks! Not today.. as the hysteria started to trickle-in. I start my order with a glass of local brew from the tap! Camden Town it is! I order the Nicholson's Fish 'n Chips for my drooling self. Anna places the order and returns to me to chit-chat. We discuss almost everything under the British sun, from politics to the royal family, to London beers, to traveling. I did notice Anna had a non-English accent I just couldn't place. Hmm. Unless it was a strong Cockney accent? Perhaps Gaelic? Heck she's Polish! Oops! Lol! And before you know it... my lunch is served! The Fish 'n Chips was a work of art to my hungry eyes! Golden brown pieces of Fillet of Haddock (better than cod!), hand-battered in Nicholson's Pale Ale, served with perfectly fried Chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. My first bite was heaven... so was my last... so delicious! I also came for Sticky Toffee Pudding or Elton Mess for dessert, but I couldn't fit another bite into my jeans. I guess rugby shorts would be best next time;P In the end, this was my favorite meal in London! It was classic British made with the finest. The local beer was a perfect pairing for such comfort food! Alas!... my only regret.. not having enough Winston in my pants for more! Anna is a great face for Dog & Duck! Super historical pub where a lot of famous people grabbed some bites and a beer. Was excited to try this place out as this was my first ever pub experience. Was a little bit confused on how it worked but I believe that the bottom floor is just bites and alcohol while the top functions as a full restaurant. There's only one lady working there but she is very efficient and friendly. - Gin + Tonic - First time trying this drink and I liked how refreshing it is and the hints of lemon. Apparently they make this drink very well according to my friends who knows her alcohol but I thought the alcohol bit was too strong for my taste. - Fish and Chips - At first glance, it seems that there isn't a ton to this dish but you'll soon realize that you will feel extremely full from it. The exterior of the fish is perfectly crispy and not too heavy which I was a bit worried about. The fish itself was extremely tender and went well with the tartare sauce. The pea mush was exactly that, a pea mush. And the chips were pretty good as well. Wish there was a bit more flavor to the dish in general but I guess that's what tartare sauce, lemon, salt, and pepper are for. Overall, fantastic experience at Dog & Duck. It was a bit pricey, but the food was generally very delicious. Also the interior design of this place is so cute as it seems like a nook for someone who had just finished their hunting excursion. Definitely would come back again just for the decorations. read more

Sadly, it took us forever to find The Dog & Duck, wandering through rain & wet streets. But when we finally found it, we immediately got a table in the corner of the cozy upstairs and knew it was worth the search. Hubby & I shared the Fillet Steak Sandwich (pan-fried fillet steak and caramelised onion chutney served with with skin-on chips (fries)) & the chicken/bacon sandwich (grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on toasted farmhouse bread with a side salad) and, of course, the Sticky Toffee & Date Pudding. Everything was fantastic - especially the dessert! Light & fluffy and served with a scoop of delicious vanilla ice cream. Simple and wonderful. nom nom nom. Oh, right, the sandwiches... The fillet steak was messy but flavorable. The chicken/bacon was bigger and was a club (it had an extra slice of bread in the middle that we didn't expect). The waitress brought us the smallest cup of ketchup ever for our chips - we are huge ketchup people and really could have used more. She was ridiculously busy - the room was packed and she was the only server - but was very nice. Even though we didn't get any beers or wine (I know, sacrilege!). I would DEFINITELY go back here! Dog & Duck is a cute pub in soho. It has a small interior, so everyone just hangs out along the street. Minus the fact that you have nowhere to put your drink, I found this to be really fun; it seems several of the other pubs in the area have the same situation going on, so the streets are packed with people (on a nice night*) and it looks like one big party. read more

Dog & Duck is the quintessential Soho London traditional pub in my eyes. It really is charming, cozy and chocked full of character with glazed tiles inside. It's standing room mostly on the main floor although word is the second floor does have many more tables & seats. It's also known for having some well known people frequent it - John Constable, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Madonna and George Orwell. When I went with my buddy, it was absolutely packed to the brims and spilling out the sides. Everyone bumping into each other as the drinks flow smooth & quickly - but that's all part of the fun, right? The service was good, the ale was better. I don't think Dog & Duck is necessarily a destination bar but a great spot along a list of bar stops on a fun night! read more

To overuse a generic, hackneyed phrase, this pub is 'steeped in history'. I know that most places in London are, but there is something so charming about this cosy little tavern. That is, if you can find somewhere to stand with your pint. And if you want to eat here - prepare to hover annoyingly over the busy tables, and use your elbows to shove everyone out the way who is doing the same thing. The Dog & Duck specialises in two things. Ale and sausages. You can come here for an ale tasting session on a Monday night, and they have Timothy Taylor on tap. And the sausages! They are certainly not your average frozen Walls bangers. Sourced from high quality British meat, you can choose 10 different types of sausages if you are ordering a Sausage sandwich, Toad in the Hole, or Bangers and Mash. There is even a veggie sausage on offer. I used to be a vegetarian, but if you had seen me tear into the crispy sausages when I was here then you wouldn't believe me. If you are not into Ale, keep an eye out for the wine menu. Bottles are so cheap! Get this - we had a perfectly decent bottle of Merlot - and it cost us £7.95! I think I have had glasses of wine for the same price in nearby restaurants. This pub has more than enough reasons to visit - so get yourself over here! read more

I'm a fan of the books 1984 and Animal Farm so how could I not come check out this pub that the man George Orwell used to frequent. It's somewhat a pretty typical bar in London. It's name is "Animal and Other Animal or Random Object," they have beer sponsors, they have a bathroom that's located down a staircase, the bartenders are nice, there are hand pumped beers. I pretty much came here after dinner at nearby Dishoom and had myself a pint of London brew. I sat down at one of the taller tables and wondered what George Orwell ordered or how many times he spilled his beer or saw a bar fight or something that sparked an idea for one of his books. George Orwell frequented or not, you can't go wrong checking out Dog & Duck because the least you'll get is some nice hospitality and a tasty cellar-temperature, drinkable brew. It's conveniently located near lots of other good-looking restaurants and pubs. read more

The Dog & Duck on Frith Street is a charming little pub very popular amongst the media crowd with large groups of people commonly hanging out on the pavement outside. The pub spreads across two floors, decorated in a very traditional pub style. Both floors are very crampt and so unless you have a seat or the weather's awful I would stand outside. The bar is well stocked and the service is friendly. As mentioned it is crampt but this does seem to add to the atmosphere. The Dog & Duck is one of the better, more traditional pubs in Soho. Additionally, if you're perverse they have pickled eggs for sale at the bar. read more

This tiny pub in Soho is a gem. Built in 1897 on the site of an 18th century pub of the same name, from the outside it looks like your average, traditional corner pub. The interior, however, is an amazing survivor, with elaborate tiling and mosaics, and large mirrors. No wonder it is a Grade II listed building. As well as the ground floor bar, there's a small upstairs bar, named after George Orwell, who apparently drank here at one time. Owned by Nicholson's, the excellent beer selection included London Pride, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Adnam's Broadside and Harvey's Sussex Bitter. Another nice facet of Nicholson's is the 'try before you buy' option, offering a taster. OK, nothing unusual there, but a good choice all the same. Food is also served, though I've not eaten here. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the clientele very mixed: gruff locals, students and assorted Soho media types. There are two downers: the downstairs is so small, not to say cramped at the rear, that you do find yourself tripping over coats and bags: and the Gentlemen's toilet. This is in the basement, and as you descend, there's a notice saying: 'Steep and Slippery Stairs'. They're not kidding. It's like the North Face of the Eiger. Definitely a challenge after a pint or three. Overall, a nice little pub, especially if you can visit when it's a bit quieter. read more

Churchills arms pub is a five star. The Thai restaurant attached is a one. They rudely tell you 1 hour at the table. Staff is put off that you even came in. DON'T try to ask for no onions. They cannot accommodate no onions. Its in every dish. I've eaten there for 12 years and never had a problem with a change. Now I'll never eat there again. If youre going to be rude to the customer, give them what they want. read more

She is the first reason for the return visit before we went back to the U.S. Food and drink were second reason, but her welcoming us and making us feel at home was so wonderful. The pub's name recalls the rather cruel sport of duck hunting, which had been popular when this was a far more rural area. The Dog and Duck pub was built in 1718 and so little changed since the 19th century that the Victorian Society have applauded it as a rare if not unique survival of a small Victorian town pub. It's now a Grade II listed building. The front bar is tiled to dado level with plain and ornamental tiles, some depicting a dog holding a duck in its mouth. Above this, large mirrors in mahogany frames, advertise mineral water and cigarettes. These are separated by columns of decorative tiles. Author George Orwell came to the Dog and Dick to celebrate the fact that the American Book-of-the-Month Club had selected his latest novel Animal Farm.In fact pop upstairs to the George Orwell room (he used to drink here). Crowded, but quick service and cold beer! Our Order: two pints of Guinness! Environment: pretty decent sized place, but awkward layout when you need to move through the pub. Bar staff was fantastic and super friendly! The place was packed. Men's restroom is down a small windy staircase. Verdict: good place to grab a pint and technically has the coldest beer I've had so far in London, so if that's important this place will be great for you. Tips: men's restroom is downstairs, don't drink too much or you might not make it down them alive (jk). Also unsure about WiFi - didn't see any when we were there. Next Time: find a seat in the rear as the front entrance was packed and very hard to move around. I'll also be back for the fish and chips - I've heard it was amazing! read more

#1 on the Soho and Noho DW ale trail, on a corner deep within the area it provided great shelter from the rain. It's vary narrow on the main floor, I would not suggest taking a big group here unless you don't have a problem standing outside to enjoy your pint. (nothing wrong with that) It is tiny and always packed due to lack of space but nevertheless that factor kind of gives it charm. A mate visiting from home was in town and this was our first stop in getting a ale trail T shirt. It was too full on the main floor so we ventured upstairs to the dinning room with is even smaller than downstairs. I think there are literary only four tables up there! The view out of the window of Soho was spectacular, it jolts you into realising just how far away you are from home. Take a minute and have a 'moment' the feeling is amazing. The menu and drinks are the same as the others, service was good with the one waitress (there wasn't any room for someone else) Restrooms were rather tight, it seems everything was really squished inside this building or maybe people are indeed just growing bigger. I'm sure this place would be fabulous during the less busy hours, but if you don't mind getting close to strangers it's a wonderful place to stop and have one pint. The restaurant is perfectly delightful, albeit a tiny bit corporate (menu of expected offerings one expects to find in a pub, somewhat prefab food, but good none the less). If you're just looking for a few drinks with friends, then you've come to the right place, so long as you don't mind standing and/or screaming to be heard over whoever's currently the drunkest patron. The draught selection is a bit small, and the Nicholson's IPA was surprisingly weak in both color and flavor. The Gathering Storm porter however? Big win. read more
