I so wanted this little jewel in downtown Athens to be worth while. But apparently it wasn't meant to be. The food wasn't horrible. It was edible for bar food. But the big turn off that will keep me away was the service. The sweet tea was horrible. We had to return it. I kept putting the menus down on the table so I could see and talk to the other people in my party and I bet the waitress came by and stuck them back straight up in the holder six times. In fact we saw her doing that more often than we saw her taking care of anything we needed. Oh well! Too bad that we won't be back!! read more

This place is really unique. Great hard to find beers both on tap and in bottles. Food is very good too. I can't express how much I love the atmosphere here. Overall Globe is an alright bar with some cheap tasting food. Me and my girlfriend came here on a Friday night to grab something to eat. She had a grilled cheese and I got a bratwurst. Not a lot of flavor and fairly greasy. Atmosphere is a nice kind of family friendly bar and grill vibe. The Classic Chicken Salad Sandwich was excellent. I attended during the the late lunch hour on a Saturday during the Christmas holiday break of UGA and was expecting a slow day but was surprised to see just the opposite. Be weary of sitting on the outside patio. You will be approached (consistently) by people asking, then demanding money. The last two times I sat outside to eat, I was approached by an intimidating man demanding money. He took items off my plate and threatened to kill me if I didn't give him money. The authorities were contacted, but never responded. He continued to shouted profanities and throw things, yet no one at the restuarant seemed concerned. Be careful. This was my favorite bar for over 20 years; however, it seems time for a change. Such a shame. read more

I remember when the Globe opened in my college days in the late 1980s. Serving mixed drinks and food was a nice surprise. Tasty $4 dollar happy hour drinks. Best red velvet cake I have ever tasted. The same vibe it had back in its early days. My kind of bar!!! read more

I've had a very similar experience. My husband I love to sit outside, but it has become increasingly uncomfortable. We have been approached by people asking for money every time we visit. It's a pub, not a beer barn or a kitchy cafe. Beer is top notch, bartenders know their shit, food is tasty and filling. The usual for me is Harp and vegan-chili nachos with extra jalapenos. But the sammies are great, and their daily specials show some incredible culinary diligence and love. The Globe is an Athens landmark for locals. It's a pub, complete with two tvs upstairs for soccer match viewing, which is a big part of the homey feel here. The roving group of sea shanty singers meets monthly here, made up of local folk musicians and several Globe bar tenders. And recently, there's been a group of celtic musicians taking over the window corner on Sunday afternoons to play whatever comes to mind and whatever the most of the know. Poetry readings Wednesdays once a month. What I'm getting at is this isn't just a bar. It's home. read more

I am always torn about this place. If you can grab one of the three outdoor tables then you've got some of the best people watching in town! The beers are great. The wines are good. The food is fairly consistently good. The only drawback is the wait time. It's interesting because any time I ever talk about The Globe with friends we all have the same thing to say: it takes FOREVER to get a drink. The bartenders are usually too busy to look at you. If you get a table and order food you'd better order before you actually get hungry because it's gonna take a while. As someone else mentioned, it's a great option for Sunday drinks. read more

I wish you could rate places separately as a bar and as a restaurant. This is one of my favorite bars in town. Beer prices are great, lots of seating, good location. Unfortunately the food is usually horrible at takes forever to come out. The fries seem frozen out of a bag and the burgers seem extremely low quality. The Globe has some GREAT pub food depending on when you go and who is cooking, I guess. The specials are generally good, and the meatloaf on Wednesdays is fantastic. Burgers and Rubens are really good, fish and steak are really really good, soup is usually great. Of course the beer selection is great as well. Wait staff can be good or bad. Some of the male waiters are really good, but some (male and female) are slow or could care less. I know the kitchen is not to blame for cold food when wait staff can be seen lounging around talking instead of bringing food. read more

Good food, TERRIBLE SERVICE!! Wait 15 minutes tonight for someone to show up at our table or even remotely greet us (normal for the globe), ordered, server came back after 15 minutes and tells me they're out of this regular menu item (how long does it take you to figure out that you're out of something?), re-ordered, he came back 10 minutes later and said they were out of fries (or did your kitchen not want to make them?), and then proceeded to be rude about ordering late, even though the only reason I was ordering late was because of his faults. The time before that, a server practically threw chili at me and didn't get me sour cream until it was cold. I work at a restaurant downtown and COMPLETELY understand being busy/server woes, but this is awful and so far beyond just regular "being busy". I keep going back because I love the chicken salad- but it never fails that the servers are pretentious and rude, no matter how friendly and patient I am. After multiple occasions of this with a ton of different people (friends, coworkers, by myself, with my parents) and with MULTIPLE different servers (some that even appeared to be managers) I seriously doubt I'll go back here, despite the fact that the food is good. GLOBE, hire some new servers! Jesus. Sick of being treated like a problem to these assholes. The young black gentleman is the only friendly person in the whole place! read more

ALMOST KILLED MY FRIEND I went out last week with a group of friends, and one person in out group has a severe soy allergy. So, when we were looking for somewhere to eat we called multiple restaurants to ensure our friend would be able to have something to eat. We called The Globe, and we were told that the majority of their food did not contain soy, and that we would be fine to eat there. Come Friday we all show up for what we expected to be a great meal. We didn't get off to a great start, but it wasn't too ad at first. Our waiter took our drink order, and we informed him that we were waiting on one more person to arrive. The waiter brings out drinks and says "So are you guys going to get something or not?" We were a bit taken aback by his rude question, but decided to order an appetizer while we waited. My friend informed the waiter of her soy allergy and asked him if the chips and queso contained any soy. He was unsure, but offered to check for us. He came back and told us that it didn't have soy, so we ordered it. The last member of our party arrived a few minutes later, but our waiter had become more and more absent. He didn't take her drink order until several minutes after she arrived, and once she got her drink it was at least 15 minutes before he came back to take our order. By this time, we were all a bit irritated, but attributed it to our hunger. When the waiter came back the friend with the soy allergy told him that she had called earlier to ask about soy and that she was told most things should be fine for her to eat, but asked him if he could double check two of the items she was interested in just to be sure. Our waiter comes back after checking and says that some of the seasonings in the dishes may have soy in them so it was up to her to decide. This isn't a great response to give someone who will go into anaphylaxis when she consumes most forms of soy. She then restates that she called ahead to confirm and asked our waiter if he could find out what didn't have soy in it. By this time, our waiter is visibly irritated about having to check all of these things, and stomps off back to the kitchen to find an answer to her question. He finally returns, and says that there is a possibility that anything will have soy and that he's not really sure what does and doesn't. Also, he informs us that "By the way, the chips you had with the queso did have soy in them." Everyone's jaw dropped. We immediately asked for the label on the chips so we could find out if the soy ingredient would cause anaphylaxis or a milder reaction. Our waiter leaves to get the label, but not before checking on another table and delivering drinks to a different table. Our friend might be dying and our waiter had the audacity to take his time. He finally returns with the label, and we figure out that the soy ingredient would not cause a complete reaction. He then asks us if we would like to order, and we tell him that we are going to go elsewhere, so he brings us our checks. The fact that he was going to charge us for the food that was potentially deadly was baffling. He returns with our checks and we give him out credit cards, and ask if we could speak to the manager. He tells us that "You can just speak to me." He wanted us to complain about him, to him. So, we then say that he ensured us that the appetizer was soy free and that her soy allergy was very serious and that he didn't even apologize for messing up. He replies with "The queso doesn't have soy in it; you didn't ask about the chips." I respond with "Were the chips not part of the appetizer? What did you expect her to do, drink the queso?" He then replies "I didn't know what she was going to do with it." By this point, everyone at the table is beyond livid at this waiter who does not seem to understand nor care about the potentially life threatening mistake he made, and are ready to leave. He brings back our checks and doesn't end up charging us, a small consolation for the hell that my poor friend had to go through. On our way out, a member of our party very sarcastically said "Thanks for all your concern." He responded with a thumbs up. Never in my life have I ever had a waiter so disrespectful and careless. He seemed to believe that he had done nothing wrong, and had the nerve to blame the mistake on us. He refused to let us see the manager (after further inquiry we discovered that they don't even have a manager! Wow wonder why everything is so screwed up) and didn't take anything that we said seriously. I will not be returning to this place anytime soon, and urge anyone who has allergies or problems with rude people to avoid The Globe. read more

i've never actually eaten here, but this is my home bar whenever i go downtown. it's nice and cozy. Not too loud and usually not too crowded. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Eric, tall guy with the beard and cubs cap is hands down the best bartender in Athens. If you get a chance to talk to him, you definitely should. Yes the general clientele is a bit older, hipster-ish, but at least you don't have too many bros around trying to spit that game (not that there's anything wrong with that, just you go to the globe to get away from all that). The beer selection is great and everything on tap is even better. The couches are comfy and the wooden tables and chairs feel very medieval. Its a great place to hang out with a group of friends or to even just grab a stool, sit at the bar, and make new friends with the bartenders or other bar patrons. This is my "MacLaren's" (How I Met Your Mother reference). read more

This was one of the worst, if not THE worst dining experience I have ever had. Our waiter comes up to the table and was visibly irritated and standoffish. We asked him to check with the chef about an allergy etc. He said the dish was fine but after the dish was consumed he comes back and says that it did indeed have said allergen. We asked to speak to the manager but he refused to get a manager and started having an argument with us. We didn't even get to order entrees because we had to go to the hospital. read more
