This establishment has long been my favorite place to get a pint of beer in Athens, but it should also be note that the food it fantastic....exquisite reuben... delicious french fries... big, healthy salads with bomb dressing (my favorite is ginger sesame), get out of here with their burgers too...ALL OF EM. Especially those lil diner burgers which taste like roadside perfection. If you like good beer, good people and good food, for sure go see the Globe. After eating lunch at the Globe two days in a row, I decided the Globe deserved an extra star for the great service of the attentive waiter my group had both times. Low pressure, quick with the refills, attentive to the "pace" of our meal, and totally cool that one girl just got water (yes, I know, it's one of my pet peeves too), this great server even comped our sodas on the second day. Sweet! Plus, I didn't mention it before, but the Globe is cheap. Not inexpensive, but cheap. A burger for under $7, a cup of delicious tomato gorgonzola soup for under $3, a perfectly toasty grilled cheese for $3.25, this place defines budget lunch. Great selection of beers.. this was the first place in Athens to serve Guiness.. Didn't eat the food, but it looked really good.. The fireplace was perfect to warm up on a cold winter day and the classical music set the scene.. Cozy couches and chairs for groups, and this is a funky vibe place. Eh, The Globe is alright. But there are better places. I went for a happy hour and thought the menu looked pretty impressive. I've since been back twice, but still never sampled it. The drinks are alright and if you're just there to relax with friends, it's not a bad place. I've had group project meetings there and chilled on the patio, but the service is hit or miss. Sometimes it's great and sometimes it sucks. My biggest complaint is if you go with a laptop and the intent to get some work done, you'd better have a full battery and not need an outlet, because you won't have much luck finding one. This place really has something to offer everyone looking for an alcoholic pick me up. The scotch flights are phenomenal, and I can't find anything comparable in my current location in Florida. If you aren't in the market for scotch, their beer selection is fantastic, and the bartenders know just what to recommend. Wine selections are not as vast, but there are still some quality picks. The food is exactly what you would expect from pub fare, and they serve one of the latest brunches in town for those who are looking for the late, "I'm hungover and I just woke up" option. All in all, The Globe is a winner for its atmosphere. Its old and creaky, filled with rocking chairs, leather couches, and room for outdoor seating that is pet friendly. This atmosphere is what Athens is all about. I do wish that they played football upstairs as often as they played soccer. Then again, the Globe's niche is Euro-Pub, and they do it well. Good for drinks, not for the food or service. They always have English and German beers on tap and have a wide selection of exotic bottled beers. I'm not a Scotch drinker, but they have a wide selection available - including a Scotch flight for tasting. They also have a decent wine selection. The food quality is marginal and the service is on the slow side, but the thing that irritates me the most is the service attitude. I've been in the establishment 10+ times and for 8 of them I got a server who clearly didn't want to be there. The best approach I've found is to eat a nice meal somewhere else and go to the Globe for a night cap. read more

The Globe is my go-to pub in town. Its definitely a "pub" and not a bar as it serves both great food and great drinks. I really love the laid-back atmosphere of the place with its dark woods, fireplace and wall art. The food is fairly standard for a pub with very few meals actually "wowing" and more consistently satisfying. My only issue is with the nasty leather couch - replace it, please! Fun times! read more

I wanted so much to like this place but it just didn't happen. The old-pub decor, the chill atmosphere, even the scotch list-- everything was great when you're looking at it.... But when you go to actually have it... Sat at the bar, ordered a beer. It took about 8 minutes to get it. If I was at a table, I'd be cool with that, but I'm sitting right next to the tap... Ok so maybe that's an anomaly. Then, to test the waters for food first, I ordered a cup of the soup special -- which I was told was a "hot and spicy" pepper sausage soup. Great. It takes a little over 15 minutes for someone to ladle the soup into a small cup and bring it out. Not spicy, barely warm, and nothing more than 2 chopped up bits of sausage floating in vegetable broth with a piece of onion or two. Decided to cut my losses. Could've been a bad night, or could've been indicative of how the pub is managed (perhaps you need to hire an additional person or two?). My hubby and I go to the Globe religiously whenever we are in Athens. It's the only pub in Athens that does decent food and we absolutely love their Globe chips with the delicious blue cheese sauce. They have a good selection of wines, draught beers, spirits and of course their awesome whiskey selection. Their heating might not be the best on cold days and you might not get any table service after 11pm (you can kind of tell when they want to close and throw everyone out), but other than that I can highly recommend this place! read more

Love this place, we come here often and set outside. We live in Athens and enjoy local places. Best hospitality ever, until today. We had the rudest server that I've ever encountered. She wouldn't stay at the table long enough to see if we needed anything which caused us to ask her many times for separate things. She approached our table and said "what would you like to drink?", which I'm ok with someone not greeting and I don't get my feelings hurt by that however when you produce bad service and are so rude the entire time along with me having to go find you twice, this isn't the job for you. If you don't want to eat your food alongside the cockroaches, don't sit inside. The food could be good, but it could be bad. It is 50%-50%. And it really depends on the mood of the chef(s). Or on the quantity of orders: If they are in a hurry, they will forget to prepare it thoroughly. Last time when I went there and ordered a reuben sandwich, I got something resembling a sandwich, but it was definitely not a reuben sandwich, because it was not grilled. Some of the staff employees are rude and arrogant. And a customer can do nothing about it. The response of the manager to rudeness of the employees, if he decides to grace you with his presence (he was too busy with other work, so, my Globe experience was not important to him), is: "If you don't like the place or the staff, don't come here." read more

No one greeted us upon arrival. After a couple of minutes, we grabbed an empty table guessing it was sit yourself seating. We waited for 10 minutes for someone to bus it. The atmosphere is modeled after a British pub, and it does a good job. You have a mix of seating arrangements from sofas upstairs to booths, tables, and even rocking chairs on the main floor. Great bar with an excellent happy hour. My husband, friend and I ended up having about 9 beers and with tip it was $20! Amazing! Also, the service is super laid back and they're good about keeping your glass full. I was told about The Globe from a friend I knew went to UGA previously. He said they had great food, and the restaurant was located right at the edge of downtown, He told me about their chips and salsa and described the atmosphere well which made me want to visit. He told about the old look of a wooden interior with wooden tables, stools, and bar area. Although The Globe does not have a wifi connection, but it has a homey atmosphere that allows you to visit and interact with others. With the environment accompanied with the delicious food, The Globe is the perfect restaurant. Although I heard so much about The Globe, it was not until my Italian teacher spoke of it that I decided to actually go. On Mondays, the Italian department invites its students out to meet other students here at UGA. The meet and greet is known as The experience is not only for the students taking Italian but also for the teachers teaching the language. The meet and greet allows the teachers to meet students they may have the privilege to teach in the near future. The students show off their Italian skills to other students, but they are not limited to just speaking Italian. Teachers encourage English with the hopes of future conversations being spoken in full Italian. The Globe is situated in a small, older building on the edge of downtown. The parking is limited to paid meter street parking.The first look gives you an older, antique look, but it also gives a calm down to Earth vibe. The restaurant has a couple of metal tables outside for outdoor dining and smoking, and the restaurant meets you with a larger wooden door for entrance. once you walk in, you see a dark, calming room. The lighting is low and sometimes there is a slight bit of calming music going in the background. The first glance shows you wooden tables, wooden stools, and a wooden bar. The restaurant is not very well decorated, but the wine and beer menus are displayed around the bar area on a colorful chalk board. The dining room has a good number of tables in it, and the upstairs area is closed on week days. The ground floor, dining area, does not have televisions, but the staff opens up the upstairs on game-day. The Globe offers the most commonly televised games on the weekends. It uses this time to offer its many beers in bottles or even on tap. The establishment does not only provides many drink options but it also bring you many food options. The food, which is not focued on one culture, gives a great home feel to it which attracts families to come and dine. When I walked through the wooden doors in the establishment, I sat in a creaky wooden stool at the bar. The waitress greeted my graciously and I proceeded to order the chips and salsa which turned out to be my favorite. I am not limited to just salsa but there is an option of cheese sauce. It reminds me of the chips and salsa my mom use to make for me back at home. The salsa is a thick tomato base with onions and just the right amount of garlic. The savory flavor had me licking my fingers when I finished. The chips and salsa turned out to be my favorite meal, but I could never forget about all the other meals I enjoyed. I have tried the Matt's Specialty pancakes which consist of 2 buttermilk pancakes with choice of fruit filling, and I have tried a burger all of which I enjoyed. I also had choices of The Globe gives an overall great feeling. I am not only put in a great feeling atmosphere, but I also love the food choices. I have ventured through several areas of the menu and each time I have a good surprise awaiting me. The old school feeling of the building and the furniture makes you feel like you are in a calm relaxing place and the atmosphere just brings joy and cheer to your day! Hands down the best quiet lunch spot in Athens. Part of me doesn't want to write this review as I am afraid the masses will overtake the globe for its delicious sandwiches, quite atmosphere and affordable prices. I've never been disappointed in anything I have tried at the Globe over the past few years. They have a diverse lunch menu with grilled cheese, blt's, chilli, burgers, quesadillas and a few more sandwich choices. All are under or around $6. I would recommend getting a side of their fries with your sandwich or burger. The service is attentive and quick to refill my drink glass. As others have said, the Globe is a great bar and a mediocre restaurant. The wine selection is not the best in Athens, but very good. They have always have interesting beers and nice liquors as well. The atmosphere is quaint and laid back. Chilling on one of the huge couches with a glass of wine in hand will leave you feeling worlds away from the ever present debauchery just down the street. Service at the bar is generally good, though you may sometimes get the "you're not a regular and I'm not sure I respect you yet" look. Food, on the other hand... Lunched here today (Thursday) with a couple co-workers. Service was friendly, and very fast, although there weren't too many folks in the restaurant at 12:30'ish. My French dip was pretty good, although I wasn't terribly impressed by the standard side of a bag of Zapp's chips. Plus, the au jus was a bit too salty. (MAN! I canNOT believe I just said that ~ I wouldn't have thought it possible, as I love a nice salty au jus.) Anyhoo, co-workers got fish and chips, and it looked "just alright" (it looked a bit like the "planks" at that fast food fish place ~ you know the one I'm talking about). I ordered the soup of the day to go. But really it should be called the joke of the day. Online, the price of a bowl of soup said $3.50. I go to pick up the soup, and they charge me $7 for a tiny bowl. I wonder how small the cup of soup is. The service was terrible, it took 10 minutes for the server to bring us plastic spoons and we had to ask her twice. I leave with the soup, hopeful that I didn't just waste my lunch money. The soup was described as "potatoes, corn and carrots" and was talked up by the person on the phone. I was imagining a hot, creamy soup. However, the soup was not creamy at all, but very watery. I went to the Globe for the first time over a year ago and was so turned off by the service that I didn't want to come back. Our server was in a bad mood as soon as he came to the table and acted as if we were an inconvenience. Fast forward to Friday night, I went back to the Globe because the wait time at another restaurant was an hour and a half and I figured I could give the Globe another chance. Once again our service was terrible. There was some annoyances with us even getting a table there but I won't even mention all of that for brevity. Once we sat down, our server didn't introduce himself so I have no idea what his name is but he's a guy with a mustache. He didn't crack a smile once, never asked if we wanted refills on our beer, and anything we said must have annoyed him. He rarely came to check on us to see if we wanted to order, forgot someone's drink until we were all ready to leave, and we had to go retrieve him for the check. The place wasn't super busy either. I can understand how he may have been having a bad day but this is 2/2 times I've received this type of service. I work in the service industry as a bartender at a restaurant so maybe I just expect to be treated as I would treat one of my customers, and I understand how some customers can be but we were a very pleasant table. The food wasn't good enough for me to overlook the service. I will say, the server helping the large table next to us seemed very friendly from what I could see, so perhaps third time will be the charm if I give the Globe another chance. read more

The look and atmosphere were cool, but then it went downhill starting with the depressing music. The music was almost as bad as the microwaved dinner I had. GLOBE, do yourself a favor, take the elevator music track, throw it in the microwave and throw them both in the street. Hopefully then you'll actually cook your food and play some decent music.
