I want to start by saying that the staff comes across as very friendly on first impression…read more However, once you have a question or raise a concern, the tone quickly shifts and responses can feel defensive rather than supportive. Unfortunately, our experience raised several ongoing concerns. There were multiple instances where our child was picked up extremely dirty, with dried mucus left on her face to the point it made us question how closely basic hygiene needs were being monitored throughout the day. Additionally, water cups were not being properly cleaned. On more than one occasion, we opened them at home and were met with a strong, unpleasant odor resembling spoiled milk. Another major disappointment was the lack of support with potty training. Initially, staff seemed encouraging, but once they were informed how frequently our child needed to use the restroom during the training process, the support quickly stopped. We were told they only take children every two hours--which is not how potty training works, especially in the early stages when consistency and responsiveness are critical. Because of this, we ultimately had to pause potty training altogether, which was incredibly frustrating. I also feel it's important to mention concerns regarding staff professionalism. The attire we observed--such as spaghetti strap tops, very tight clothing, and extremely short shorts--did not reflect what I would expect in a childcare setting. When caring for young children, there should be a higher standard of professionalism, both in conduct and presentation. Overall, while the initial friendliness is appreciated, consistency in care, cleanliness, and professionalism is essential--and unfortunately, that was not our experience.

After visiting numerous daycare providers, and considering home-based providers, it became clear that Katie's Kids would be our choice. Not for one second have we regretted this decision. First off, the staff. We love the teachers. They are kind, dedicated, and share a commitment to providing a loving atmosphere focused on fun, learning, and positive development. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of projects that our son completed and brought home. I think our only complaint is that we don't have enough room to display his projects...! Secondly, the location. It's centrally located in downtown Royal Oak and with meters not starting until 11am and the parking garage across the street providing two free hours of parking until five, paying for parking is a rarity (unless of course the weather is bad then I'll spot a dime to park in one of the spots located right in front of the building). Every so often they will host a parents night out where they will watch the children/students from 19:00 - 22:00/23:00ish... This is a great benefit! Being in downtown RO we can eat dinner, see a movie, or just relax downtown knowing our son is hanging out with his friends! Finally, the cost. It's no secret that daycare is expensive but of all the places we visited, Katie's Kids was the most reasonably priced. They did recently raise their prices but even with this bump it's still one of the best deals in town. Considering diapers are INCLUDED until the child is about 18 months old, it's unbeatable. Plus, they take credit cards, so we can slowly earn airline miles to use on a future vacation...! Great staff. A true dedication to a caring, safe, and fun learning environment. Excellent location. Incredibly reasonably priced. It's unbeatable.

My son had been attending this daycare since he was 3 months old, so I had trusted them with his care for a long time. I understand that children bite, and I understand that accidents can happen, but what matters is how the daycare handles those situations. In this case, the communication was unacceptable. My son was bitten, and when I asked how it happened, nobody could give me a clear answer. When I asked his teacher for a picture of the bite so I could see my child's injury while I was at work, I was told that I was not allowed to receive a picture because of "policy." I am paying this daycare to care for my child, and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect clear information about an injury that happened while he was in their care. The assistant director was the person I spoke with after the incident. She told me she understood why I was upset, but her actions did not make me feel like she actually understood or cared. She couldn't answer my questions and seemed more focused on getting me to sign the incident report than actually explaining what happened. The incident report documented a bite on my son's arm. When I got home, I discovered that he also had another bite on his back that I had never been told about. I immediately emailed the director about the situation. She was on vacation at the time, and when she returned, she told me she was "piecing the information together." After that, I never received a follow-up, explanation, or even a conversation about what actually happened. My son had also recently transitioned into the toddler classroom, and I was never informed that there had been a child who was biting in the classroom. Again, I understand that biting can happen with toddlers, but parents deserve transparency and communication when something like this is happening. Unfortunately, this was not the first time I had concerns about how injuries were communicated. There had been previous bumps and injuries where I felt the staff were not properly trained or communicating appropriately. What made the situation even worse was being told by the assistant director that my son doesn't cry when he gets hurt. That felt like they were trying to use my child's reaction to explain away their lack of awareness instead of taking responsibility for not knowing what happened to him. A child not crying does not mean an injury shouldn't be noticed or communicated to their parent. There are some teachers there who I genuinely liked and who I believe cared about my son, but unfortunately, the overall lack of communication and accountability outweighed the good experiences. After having my son there since he was 3 months old, it is extremely upsetting to lose trust in a place that I relied on to care for him while I was at work. I don't expect a daycare to prevent every single accident, but I do expect them to know when my child is injured, be honest about what happened, communicate with me, and follow up when a parent raises a serious concern. In this situation, I feel they failed on all of those things. I would not recommend this daycare based on my experience. My biggest issue isn't simply that my son was bitten--it is how poorly the situation was handled afterward and how little communication and follow-through I received.

In fact, he ALWAYS begs me to attend extra days! My daughter is two and loves coming here. The teachers take great care of the kids. I drop my children off knowing that they are in wonderful care. The Owner, Kim and Director, April are very helpful, involved and always go above and beyond! The teachers are interactive and have great activities planned for the kids. The playground and gym have fun toys that the kids enjoy! My kids enjoy all the meals and snacks that are served. The whole facility is kept exceptionally clean.
