I was…read moreutterly desperate for the toilet before my twenty-five minute bus ride home to Leeds and so went in search of a small cafe. I had assumed, since Otley is full of those, that I wouldn't be caught short but it seems after four ish (even on a Friday) the majority of said cafes like to shut shop! Literally no one was open. So, in my desperation I decided to nip into a pub and this was the first to hand. I went in and was ready to cringe at the bunch of local crusties who'd wonder what a random girl was doing drinking on her own, but was pleasantly surprised. Sure enough I got a few looks but most people just got on with their conversations. I had half a coke served by a lovely lady, and it was a real coke - none of that pretend stuff - served in a fresh glass with ice. Lovely. I finished it in time for a quick toilet trip and made it to my bus with five minutes spare! All good. I know you'll be thinking that purchasing more liquid seems like not such a good antidote to my original problem but, fortunately on this occasion, it was all good. I am one of those idiots who just can't go in an use the facilities without buying something! (More the fool me, I know...) Anyhow. Red Lion? Really quite homely and nice.

It didn't make sense that the pub in Otley with the best location in town should shut down, but it happened. Thankfully, it reopened after a few months and kept Otley in the "my town's got a Red Lion gang". Bang in the middle of Otley, on the main road through the town, it sits next to another pub and is like any other Otley pub to the untrained eye (mine). This means that it does a few real ales (the pick of which is Black Sheep), is usually more likely to be full of older locals than young drinkers, and has a fairly friendly Yorkshire atmosphere. It's far from the best pub in the town, but I don't think it will be shutting down again any time soon.

Open from 12 until 12 most days, it provides a laid-back restaurant lounge during the day and a lively bar/club scene in the evenings. A popular place with young professionals, it is guaranteed to be busy most nights of the week, especially Tuesday, which is student night. Drinks on offer to the student population of Leeds include double vodkas for as little as £1.50, and at these sort of prices, you can be sure of a good night. On weekends, drinks can be a fair bit more expensive, sometimes even around £6 for doubles and £3.50 for bottles, but the impressively eclectic mix of music, attractive people and a stylish setting means that Tiger rarely fails to deliver in terms of a good night out.

We had our work Christmas do here in December, and with definite trepidation, I attended. I was mostly concerned about the music and the patrons - it's really not my style in here as "R&B" (I refer to the modern phrasing, not the old school) is possibly the exact opposite of what I like to reverberate through my ear drums. This trepidation was vindicated by the fact that the place was saturated with hoards of customers, literally packed in like scantily-clad-vest-and-chest baring sardines ("which way's the beach?!"), a large proportion of whom were both rude and ignorant. We had our own private function room but since three different companies had been squeezed in on the same night this did not help us out when it came to waiting at the bar. I soon found out also that our own private bar had no lager on tap and that bottles of beer were...£4.00! What in the name of all-things-glorious is that about? Sick. So, I decided to wade through the masses and try the main bar. I think more people's sweat contacted my skin than is humanely safe. Eugh. Having waited patiently after two people pushing in my pint of lager came to something between £4-4.50. *Jaw hit floor* Our buffet was an odd mix of cold meats, potato, quiche and other bits with the bizarre other option of hot rice and a suspect looking beef casserole or green thai curry. Weird. Not-good-weird. I had as much as I could since, for just shy of £40 for the outing, I was going to get my money's worth. We had one measly complimentary glass of champagne to accompany our buffet. For whatever reason our company was situated in the entrance room where there weren't even proper tables to sit at with our food so I ended up hunched over my plate on a sort of poof-type-seat. Whole thing was naff. Prices - ridiculous. Staff - not bothered. Food - meh. Patrons - gah! Don't think I'll be back.

Feel embarrassed to say I have never been/heard of it before however to make up for this I shall be returning stat with all my friends, especially when the new menu is completed and launched! Becky the new head chef has come from working at The Living Room as a Sous Chef so has tonnes of experience and new ideas to turnaround the menu at the Black Lion. If it's anything like the tasters we experienced last night it's gonna be mint. Everyone needs to go and try the new food, which will be a take on good, wholesome traditional pub food with fresh, quality ingredients at reasonable prices. It's easy enough to get to walking, from Deansgate I believe is where I walked from. The atmosphere is great and friendly, artsy and independent. They also have a venue upstairs for events such as gigs, previewing independent films, theatre and spoken word. They have a whole host of planned events coming up over the next few months, pop in, have a drink and find out! I wish them the best of luck with their new menu and I shall be attending more of their events very soon!

I've been past here in the early evenings too and there's never any atmosphere or buzz, like you get in really good boozers. Lunch was good though and my friend and I didn't really mind the relative solitude. This pub has 8 cask ales and is under new management so plenty to get people through the door - but why don't they come? It doesn't help that it is pretty big - its a corner pub - so there is plenty i.e. too much room for diners.. Strange. I just feel like there's something I'm missing out on, you know. What does everybody else know that I don't?

The service also tends to be quick at lunchtimes making it great if you're in a rush to get back to work. On a Friday and Saturday evening it tends to get very busy but is also one of the first pubs to empty out. If you're on a night out then it's a great atmosphere and despite being particularly busy, I've never had to wait for long at the bar to be served. The prices of drinks are average for Burnley town centre and there's a good mix of people and ages on a weekend evening. Strangely enough, the Red Lion seems to go quite after 10pm on a Friday and Saturday, probably as people continue on to the other pubs in the vicinity but it's still a nice place to pop in either for a meal and a quiet drink in the daytime or a boogie and a tipple at night.

When I went in to politely ask the staff if I could drive over the grass to get out, the man rudely and abruptly said that I'd have to wait 45 minutes because I'm not going over the grass (which wasn't well looked after anyway by the looks of it) and aggressively said it's not his problem and I just had to wait. I told him that he needs to put signs up if he doesn't want people parking there in future (it's not as if I was there for long or during peak time) appalling way to speak to potential customers. While on a recent Yelper night out, we popped in for a couple to see what the recent refurbishments have done to it and what sort of vibe it has. The good news is that it's still kept a lot of it's original Manchester pub charm without selling out to become too NQ, the clientele is a mix of Manchester old boys, hipsters and people just wanting a good night out. The decor is...how do I put this... Well it's the sort of place that Robert De Niro (in Casino) would call a "sawdust joint" - pretty rustic, rough around the edges but still some good character throughout. The beers were fairly cheap if not having a spectacular range but I'm thinking this may change if the Castle guys get their way. What I hear is the real USP of this place is the live music room at the back which has been made into a kind of alternative, rock theatre and I'd love to check out a gig there in the future. If I'm out for a beer then I probably will still go to the Castle across the road instead, but I'd have no probs popping into Gullivers for one.

One advantage is the beautiful windows down the right side of the pub get full exposure, with nice booths set up. This was my first time experiencing the upstairs music hall and while Jo Mango was fantastic, the room was unbearably hot. She herself mentioned several times how sweaty she was (she's adorable) and I don't think it can be very pleasant for the performers to have to work like that, particularly considering the kind of delicate instruments she uses. So basically: get some AC, or open a window.

An energetic and fun landlady. She turned it into a light, cozy and inviting place. The dark wood changed into a vintage light green colour. Comfy seats and an eating area. They have quite a few gins on offer, a cocktail menu and Brontë ales. I gave it four stars as I have yet to try the food there. Definitely a pub where I feel very welcome.

We went outside our hotel and heard some terrible singing. We asked a local, who told us there was karaoke here with "the worst singers in 'Awuth". This was enough of a draw to make us have a look and we went back each night we stayed there. Everybody was fairly friendly, the bar staff and bar manager (who doubled as the DJ) were welcoming and the drinks weren't overly pricey, especially considering how touristy Haworth is. A lot of fun is to be had if you don't take yourself too seriously.
