Unfortunately, I made the choice of going to Belmar Family Medical since they could get me in quickly. I would never recommend that office. Back to Dr. Atkins. From the moment she walked in the door we both literally thought we had met each other somewhere before. She was great! Very personable, happy and talkative, unlike the experience at Belmar. She asked a lot of questions about the accident and how I was feeling. She actually seemed like she wanted to know and really cared about my pain and the anxiety I now have when driving. She discussed our plan of action on getting some physical therapy done to help with my recovery. When I left her office almost an hour later I was so happy to have found a doctor in Colorado that I felt comfortable with! I was so excited that before I started the car I had to call my daughter to tell her. I sat there for probably 10 minutes just gushing over how excited I was and told my daughter that I would now be bringing her there as well because she's getting too old to see her Pediatrician anymore (she's 17!). Linda in the office was also fun and a pleasure to have met. She did my weight/height and vitals. The whole experience was just super great!! :)

Since the retirement of Dr. Karen Kelly-Hemler and the subsequent take over by Optum, which is owned by United Health Care, patient care, customer service and follow up have all changed drastically. First of all, it is a revolving door of doctors, PA's, nurse practitioners, MA's, managers and front office staff since I started going there. Dr. Kelly used to genuinely care about her patients and demonstrated that each time I saw her, but now it's only about how much money the doctors and managers can squeeze out of each person who comes through the door. I absolutely dread when I need a prescription refilled because it can take weeks for the staff to reply to the pharmacy and approve the prescription especially if there is an issue with insurance, and that's if they don't require me to come in for an office visit first. I have run out of medication because insurance won't let me fill it too early or the office does not see running out of medication as a priority. When I've complained to the receptionist at the front desk they tell me that they are so busy and understaffed that they can't get to medication requests sometimes for several days or weeks, and no one sees anything wrong with this. I can just see the roll of the eyes from the staff when I ask how long something is going to take, as if I'm being unreasonable. Also, I recently had an issue with my insurance not being accepted and the doctor told me she had many patients that pay of out pocket but she took this as an opportunity to charge me $300 for a 10 minute appointment - surprise! The front desk receptionist told me that they don't usually take patients who don't have insurance that they accept and that I should go somewhere else that accepts my insurance. Changing primary doctors can be very time consuming but in this case I think that's the best advice I've heard.

They asked me to come in for an initial visit prior to having my annual exam. That's fine, but I mistakenly assumed this initial visit, where nothing other than BP and build was measured, would be considered part of my annual exam and billed as such (my insurance covers one annual exam/year). At this visit, I talked to the NP for about 30 minutes (which included her leaving the room twice to deal with another patient--I was nice and didn't complain about this although it was inappropriate). She asked me to schedule my exam in approximately a month. This weekend I received a bill for this initial visit. I called the office to verify whether this initial visit was considered part of the annual exam; it is not. So I'm paying for a 30 minute conversation that was not valuable to me in any way. My suggestion to this practice is to let patients know up front they will be paying for an initial conversation if they want to establish care there. It's not a huge amount of money, but it's money out of my pocket for zero return. There are plenty of practices that will provide quality, efficient care without taking advantage of their customers in this way, and I will be moving my care to one of them.

On the other hand, if she feels that a visit with a specialist is needed she doesn't hesitate to make a referral. I've never been kept waiting more than a few minutes past my scheduled appt time and have never felt like I was rushed or didn't have time to ask any questions I had. She in fact spent at least an extra 45 minutes with me at one recent visit - I was much sicker than I realized and she recognized right away that I needed to be transferred to the ER. She made all the necessary calls, and kept an eye on my condition until the paramedics arrived. She is prepared to deal with urgent problems like the one I was having but also takes the time to go thru everything health-related at least every year and makes sure that I'm up to date on my vaccines, etc. I feel very lucky to have found such a competent and empathetic medical provider.

AS IS TYPICAL FOR ALL WELLNESS EXAMS, I FILLED OUT THEIR FORMS, I WAS WEIGHED, THEY TOOK MY BLOOD PRESSURE, AND I LET THE DOCTOR KNOW I WAS IN MENOPAUSE WHEN HE ASKED GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT MY HEALTH. THEIR LETTER STATES THAT DISCUSSING THESE THINGS NECESSITATES A $165 FEE (A NEW PATIENT FEE) AND THAT I AM BEING CHARGED THIS FEE BECAUSE I AM UNDERWEIGHT AND IN MENOPAUSE...I HAVE CONTACTED DORA AND AM NOW CONTACTING AN ATTORNEY (THE ATTORNEY I HAVE THROUGH MY EMPLOYER REVIEWED THE LETTER AND SAID IT LOOKS BAD FOR COMMON SPIRIT). COMMON SPIRIT--REMOVE THIS $165 FEE--I SHOULD NOT BE BILLED EXTRA FOR COMING IN, FOLLOWING ALL OF YOUR DIRECTIONS, FILLING OUT YOUR FORMS, AND ANSWERING THE DOCTOR'S QUESTIONS. THIS IS PRICE-GOUGING AND YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHARGE PATIENTS EXTRA DUE TO RACE OR AGE. AND IF YOU WISH TO CHARGE EXTRA FEES, YOU MUST DISCLOSE THIS TO PATIENTS AHEAD OF TIME. HERE ARE DETAILS OF WHAT I EXPERIENCED... I booked an appointment for a routine physical with Dr. Mahoney. That is all I wanted or needed--a physical and basic bloodwork. At no time did anyone let me know verbally or in writing that there is a fee to establish care despite my letting them know that my insurance only covers a physical once/year (everything else falls under a very high deductible). At first, Dr. Mahoney was nice and knowledgeable although he appeared to be jacked up on something...then he was pretty unprofessional and also dropped the ball on a requested test. This is the first doctor's visit in which the nurse did not ask me to put on a gown and I did not get a physical (just my blood pressure taken by the nurse and Dr. Mahoney "listened" to my heartbeat" while talking incessantly about how his mother-in-law takes testosterone which makes women aggressive. I did not ask about testosterone nor do I have any interest in it so I found it strange that he talked about it for a long time. He also told me that he cleaned another patient's ear out ("the son of a cardiologist") and made him bleed so that patient was annoyed with him (a legal expert told me that the doctor sharing this could be considered a HIPPA violation...). I asked for a urinalysis to be done with my bloodwork and left a urine sample which was never completed and to date nobody can tell me how it was forgotten although Dr. Mahoney admitted writing that he "forgot." When I explained that my health insurance would not cover me coming back to do it at another time as they suggested, nobody cared or offered a solution. When I received a questionnaire about my experience, I left honest feedback. I spoke with their Patient Representative, Keoni, who told me she had never heard about a new patient fee and that I would not have to pay it. (I brought it up because I read another one-star review from a patient who mentioned it.) Despite that, I have now received a bill from Common Spirit--a new patient fee for $165 to "establish care" that my insurance will not cover. Since I am not going to return to this practice due to gross incompetence, negligence, and unprofessionalism, I am NOT going to pay it. I have called the Patient Representative line several times, left messages, and apparently Keani or anyone else cannot be reached. I can only get one physical/year and this one was a waste of my time and it puts my health in jeopardy. In fact, I will be demanding that I get a full refund back to my insurance for this awful and stressful visit. My recommendation is that people avoid this place unless you have money to burn and do not care about your health and wish to be treated poorly. For starters, Common Spirit should be transparent about their new patient fee or any additional fees. I would not have come here at all if I had known about it. How would you like to go out to dinner, order food and then get a bill that includes the charge for your meal + a "new diner" fee? Nobody would like that. It's underhanded, corrupt, greedy, and sleazy! If you wish to charge this, then be transparent about it from the get-go! Please also note that CommonSpirit only seems to allow 5-star reviews of their doctors on their website which IMO is misleading and unethical. Shame on this medical practice and facility. I have filed a formal complaint with DORA and will be filing more with every other consumer/government agency I can. I will also be calling an attorney if they insist I pay the new patient fee that was never disclosed to me when booking the appointment for what turned out to be a terrible physical at a facility I would never trust again. Shame on Keani--she is their Patient Representative and is very disingenuous. She offers no help at all and summarizes what you share with her by spinning it against the patient and for Common Spirit (no surprise there).
