We stopped in here for breakfast. Definitely a bar atmosphere but tables were all ready for diners in the morning. I ordered the Denver omelet. It was large and stuffed with sauted bits of ham, onions, and red peppers. It was covered with a nice melted shredded cheddar cheese. So good. It came with hash browns and toast. Hash browns could have been a bit crispier but overall, a delicious breakfast. Lots of fun things to look at in the bar. Glowing fish, Elvis, Jeeves.... Fun to walk around and take it all in. My family and I had the pleasure of visiting this establishment a few times this last week during our camping trip. I met Gretta, the owner who is SO kind and friendly. You have to go meet her. Their establishment is so cool with tons of cool pictures and friendly staff. And....they serve the best coffee around. Great spot for lunch or happy hour. The food is delicious & service is excellent! The bartender (Mickey) took great care of us. We had the special which was Western Burger (2 patties, cheese, bacon, chipotle seasoning, and BBQ sauce) & we upgraded to Ranch fries. I highly recommend their award-winning Bloody Mary! House mixed with Absolut vodka and garnished with celery, beef stick, pickle, grape tomato, green olive and served in a salted chilled glass. The extremely rude waitress screamed "Just so you know my kitchen closes at 8 so if you want food you better order soon!" A family next to us waiting on their food said "And they have lovely customer service here too." They must have already experienced first hand the rude waitress. Our table of 3 looked at each other and decided to leave. "Good choice" said the family waiting on their food. I hope the manager reads this review. You run a business. I assume you want to make money. Customers will come in and order food and drinks. They will tip your servers and out word of mouth influences others. It was a Tuesday night. The waitress's poor life choices are not the problem of paying customers- but it is the problem of the manager. You and she lost money tonight. Too bad the good ol days have passed.... just as you should pass by this place. We came here to try the famous Bloody Mary that we had heard so much about. Personally, it was one of the worst bloodies I've had. Sure, the presentation is pretty good if you can get past watching the bartender put his fingers all over every piece of food that he strategically places into the glass. The lemon wasn't fresh and the rest were regular pickled items, except for the chunk of chocolate (which I admit was a nice touch.) The taste of the Bloody Mary itself was just not good at all and def needed some Worcestershire sauce as well as other things to add flavor. If you want a great bloody, go to The Penalty Box in Eveleth. The main decor was neat and the bathroom decor was humorous with scantily clad men in the ladies' room and bikini babes in the men's room. When we asked if they served any craft beer the bartender didn't know what we were talking about and the rest of the bar-goers giggled/scoffed at the request. We ordered cheese curds and they were good. This place is in desperate need of ventilation and a fan system in the kitchen. The entire placed reeked of smoky grease and I feared our clothing had absorbed the smell when we left. Also, it was dirty and dusty. It took 10-15 minutes after our drinks were empty to get our bill, and it was not busy at all. (There was one table of two and six other people at the bar.) There were two bartenders at the end of our visit and neither asked if we wanted another drink. read more

I visited Good Ol' Days July 3. Although they were busy at the bar, everyone was friendly and pleasant. The bartender was SO helpful when I said I wanted something low carb. We tried to eat here on Friday night. The sign on the sidewalk advertised Friday Night Fish Fry, and the people coming out were raving about it. We sat down at six and ordered the fish, thinking they'd have batches of it ready. We waited over 75 minutes after ordering, and finally told the barman we were leaving. He apologized, explaining they had a big group outdoors, and didn't charge us for our sodas. read more

On the first day of a week-long trip throughout northern Minnesota and Wisconsin I found myself in Tower, a town I've been through often but never stopped in. The Alberta Clipper that made the weather so frigid later in the week had not yet come through so I wasn't yet as miserable as I would later be. I was up with two others and we had spent the morning coming up from Duluth on 53 and wrapped up the second site in Tower just in time for lunch. We walked in and went past the bar to the tables in the back, and the bartender was over to us quickly to get us coffee. It took us a bit to get around to perusing the menu since the three of us were still talking about an issue with the last site. I was impressed with the layout of the place - there was a bar along the wall in the front and a open area in the rear with tables. There were little historical newspapers on the tables, detailing the history of the building and main street in Tower. It was a very nice touch. The other two decided on sandwiches while I went with the buffalo chicken wrap. The food prices seemed a bit steep but I was on an expense account so I didn't mind. The orders came out quickly, and while the other two guys had gotten onion rings and fries with their orders my wrap came out unaccompanied. This ended up being OK by me, because while the wrap looked small it was actually really filling. The chicken was perfectly cooked and tossed in Frank's RedHot - not too much or too little. The celery added a coolness to the heat of the sauce. The bartender was good at regularly filling my coffee cup, though I did have to run up to the bar to pay for lunch. Considering how often I'm up in northern MN it is good to know that there is a good place to eat in Tower. read more

I've been to Good Ol' Days several times over the last couple years -- for breakfast, lunch, and just drinks. This place is a classic local greasy spoon. You won't find anything fancy here -- just solid, good food and friendly people. This is definitely my place of choice for a Bloody and breakfast the morning after partying a bit too hard at the cabin, and is also a solid spot to grab a burger for lunch or dinner. read more

Stopped in for lunch after going to the Soudan Mine tour and really had a great meal. Fun place for a beer and a sandwich. Had the cod sandwich and it was excellent. I had a Saturday off of work so my girlfriend and I decided to head up to Ely to get some moccasins at Steger Mukluks & Moccasins. After the drive from Duluth to Ely and heading back, we started to get hungry. I like to eat at local businesses and passing through Tower on the inbound trip, we decided to see if there was anything there. That's how we discovered the Good Ol' Days Bar & Grill. When we walked in we were surprised at how busy it was for a town of 500. Apparently this was the place the locals frequented as well. That is a good thing. Walking through a bar area in the front, you come to a nice place to sit and eat in the back. It was spacious and the decor had a nice nostalgic feel to it. Our food was good and there was a moderate amount of variety. The prices were good for how much you get and it was delivered quickly and with a smile. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling up to Ely. We will certainly be back. read more

Our family came to eat here today while on vacation and I was super disappointed with our experience. Although the food was great, our bartender Baily was very unprofessional. I ordered a bloody and watched her run her hands through her greasy hair before touching my garnishes. Why is her hair not up so that she doesn't have to brush it away from her face? How gross. Also not to mention how loud and obnoxious she was. Also was a little disappointed to see her drinking on the job. All in all I would not recommend this place. read more

Let me tell ya about The Good Ol' Days. This little gem is just a skip and a jump from the lake is the perfect stop for an cold beer and maybe even some pull tabs if you're feeling lucky. You can enjoy the model train circle above restaurant as you enjoy some drinks and fried fare from the kitchen. The staff was oh so friendly and the beer was reasonably priced. Bathrooms were clean even though the artwork was bold. Overall, great stop on the way to the lake. read more

This place has reprints of old newspapers from about 100 years ago at the table consistent with the theme of the restaurant, which I enjoyed reading. I've been here several times for lunch, and found the food and service to be satisfactory. Nothing to write home about, but nothing bad either.
