What an amazing venue. The outside is beautiful with a lovely marquee. The lobby is small, but peacefully decorated. There is an orchestra level as well as a balcony level and when you walk into the theater space it is beautiful. The stage is large. The theater holds a lot of people. The ticket takers and ushers were extremely friendly and more than happy to help in anyway you can. Just off the lobby there are men's and women's restrooms that have about two stalls in each. There are more restrooms and larger restrooms upstairs. The seats are very soft and cushiony and comfortable to sit in for longer periods of time. There was not a ton of legroom so if you are a taller person, I suggest getting an aisle seat. We went to the event, called an evening with the dude screaming the movie the big Lebowski where we watched the movie, then Jeff Bridges came out, shared stories photographs, and answered questions about the movie. It started I believe at six and went went on for several hours to a sold out crowd. With that being said, the theater never felt too congested to where you could not move and get around. They also offer a small concession stand, and you can bring food and drink to your seat. However, there is no outside food and drink permitted. Definitely love this little theater and I will for sure check out more events there in the future. read more

Granada decided to change their booster policy hours before the Wynton Marsalis concert, with no notice, no update to their website, no update emails to their ticket holders, or to their COVID policy on their website. They denied us entrance, lied and said they'd emailed us (nope. Or any other ticket holder we talked to!) and acted like we were the creeps, not them. We're scheduled for boosters tomorrow and would happily have gotten before today IF THEY HAD SAID SO. Not this arbitrary BS. I will NEVER donate or attend an event here again. I was so excited to see that there were shows going on through covid! I appreciate that the website is extremely clear about needing to be vaccinated or have a recent covid negative test to go to the show. I feel like this helps alleviate any confusion or for folks to buy tickets and then be dramatic at the venue. It was a simple process: show Vax card or negative test, get in line for will call tickets, have a mask on the entire show and that's it. The restrooms are easy to find, are well lit and there are speakers inside the restrooms so you can hear the show if you end up needing to relieve yourself during the performance. Everybody was helpful and friendly. I look forward to more shows in the near future there. read more

A majestic and beautiful theater! The Granada has been around for over 100 years. Its restore around 15 years ago really turned it into a masterpiece. To my knowledge, it was renovated to resemble its original form. I can tell that no expenses were spared. This theater is huge and very ornate. You will find the most beautiful of details throughout. The venue itself offers a mezzanine and loge seating areas. You will see that each seat has a name engraved. These names are of all the donors whom had contributed to the theater's remodel. Pretty neat. I feel that this theater attracts a good variety of quality artists. I was here the other night to watch Hairspray, the musical, and it was spectacular. From the lighting to the transitions, it was a flawless performance. The orchestra pit is hidden but the acoustics were amazing. I'm grateful to live within walking distance and hope to come back here again soon. read more

I'm stunned that anyone gave this theater anything less than 5 stars. Sure, they do run some turkeys. Case in point: Officer and A Gentleman Musical. Broadway in SB should never have brought this pathetic excuse for a jukebox musical to town. If they couldn't find a fourth show to fill out the season, they should have left it at three (Hairspray, with Jerry Mitchell, will be great; I can't speak for the also non-equity Waitress and Jersey Boys). But it's such a breathtaking space --and it's not like there's a lot of other culture/theater in Santa Barbara---that even a bad show is a pleasure. The Granada is home of the SB Symphony, the crown jewel of SB's cultural scene, with charismatic Nir Kabaretti the helm. I saw Kismet (not a typical show for the Granada), but some UCSB Arts and Lectures events play here too. The State Street Ballet is an excellent small city company. The Broadway is the weakest offering but if you're starved enough for musical theater, you suck it up. I saw the magnificent Jonathan Pryce in My Fair Lady years ago. The sound was wonky (ugh, so frustrating) but they figured it out for the Camelot concert, which was quite good. The problem, by the way, with Officer and a Gentleman wasn't the young cast, most freshly minted BFAs. The problem was the book, a woke allegory bearing no resemblance to the movie, which was really written by a novelist and Broadway producer, not the Oscar-nominated screenwriter (as the promos claimed). The ushers and security people are all terrific and the recent renovation beautiful. Parking in the rear is easy unless the show is sold out, in which case you can park two or so blocks away. read more

The Granada is a beautifully remodeled theater to enjoy a night out with opera, ballet, song or show. Easy to find (tallest building in Santa Barbara) with convenient parking in a lot across the street (SW) and a parking garage behind (NE) the Granada is home to the Santa Barbara Symphony, Opera Santa Barbara, one of the venues for UCSB Arts & Lectures and features Broadway touring productions through Theater League. We've enjoyed season tickets the Broadway series since the re-opening and enjoy the productions for the most part but more importantly, the facilities. There's barely a bad seat in the house but beware of the boxes. Sure you look cook in your perch but speaker risers often block some of your view. Beverages are available on both floors including wine and snacks. At least for our shows, you can take your drink to your seat. On a long show, your butt may fall asleep but starting with row J and moving back, every other row offers more space between you and your friend with personal arm rests. The alternating rows share one. It does get warm so dress appropriately. That goes for temperature as well as venue. Show some respect and don't wear Crocks and socks to a play. No really. It does not look good. That's not to say you can be casual. It's the beach baby and everyone is laid back. I see jeans and Polos next to suits and sports coats. It's not the big city so you can cut back a bit on the attire. The main bathrooms are on the second floor but the first floors are rarely used. Yes, it says handicapped on the door but that indicates it's accessible. There is one stall and 2 stand ups on the men's. The judge suggest I stop going into the women's so I can't comment there. With many dining options before the event and a few left for cocktailing after, the location is great. Enjoy a night on the town and do it in the Granada. read more

I love the theatre itself and the sound is pretty good. The problem for me was the excessive talking by the employees/ushers behind the back row on the floor seats. I am here for a concert to watch and listen to the music. The prices are not cheap. Please have some courtesy for guests. Talking between employees and with guests seemed excessive. I will try to avoid sitting in this area again here. Please try to keep your voices down and limit the amount of talking during the concert. At times it was like the employees were having a meeting behind me. read more

We went to this theater yesterday to see The Nutcracker. I had been before, but it was several years ago and was excited to go back. I have been frustrated with the service for obtaining our tickets. I request the print tickets at home option but never received my tickets. I called twice to request they be emailed again and still never received them. Their only fix for this was to pick up my tickets in person at the box office upon arrival. I showed up yesterday and had to wait in a line, almost making me late for the performance. I am disappointed with their customer service. Otherwise, the theater is great. All of the seating options are excellent. We really enjoyed the show and will definitely be back. read more

First time at this Amazing venue. Beautiful theater, so excited to see "Swing Out". We get an email before the show about the mask requirement. Come on, really????? But... we go because we want to see the show. An announcement is made that this is to protect the traveling artists. In the front row the audience is 15 feet away from the performers. All these ticket holders comply with this request. Ok... we are all good sports. You know what? I'm no longer willing to be a good sport. Check the statistics, educate yourself on the risks and live your life!!! Good God. If there was any evidence to support this request, it would be different. I'm vaccinated, respectful and educated. I'm not a robot. After the show people were asked to come on stage and dance with the performers. How fun!!! These people are now in close contact, so I'm thinking, "if you are concerned, wear a mask". That's it. Make individual choices based on your situation, but don't make everyone comply based on fear. Went to see Jersey Boys..the theater emailed everyone to get there early for Covid vaccine checks (totally good with that) but then didn't allow anyone to sit until approx 7:10. So we were standing in a hot crowded lobby area for 40 min unnecessarily. Also all concessions are closed due to Covid so bring your own bottled water if you plan to have anything to drink. Note: this review is basically aimed at the performance and not the theater per se. I would rate the overall atmosphere and appearance at about 4 stars. Beautifully restored and comfortable seating, at least in the orchestra. We were in row C, or 3 center seating. Although the walls did appear a bit dingy and in need of a paint job. An ongoing restoration project no doubt. My 3 star rating is specifically for the somewhat disappointing, next to last performance of the, in our opinion, overhyped Shen Yun. 4/29/16. When first searching for tickets to these performers Southern California tour several months ago, having missed out last year, my wife and I thought it the perfect opportunity for a Santa Barbara getaway. Well, those gorgeous backdrops that come off so brilliantly on the flat screen, high definition set at home aren't quite so brilliant live and in person. Maybe it was the lighting; too much reflected on set or something. But just not the same. Beautiful mind you but nothing overwhelming. And the choreography kind of gets repetitious with each scene. There are some well done effects, with characters flying down from Heaven on screen, then appearing live on stage. But this too becomes a bit over done. The dancers are top rate, with outstanding costumes but maybe it was just us. There were 3 solo vocalists, wonderfully accompanied by an extremely gifted pianist. Unfortunately, all 3 soloist, in our opinion, are beyond their prime. The older male baritone even reminding me of Bert Lahr from The WIzard of Oz (the Cowardly Lion). I'm not being facetious. And all in a Chinese dialect with subtitles on screen. Lyrics, apparently glorifying an ancient belief that includes all of humanity having fallen from Heaven in some distant past and after many reincarnations, eventually overcoming our sins and regaining our heavenly home. As a matter of fact, the entire theme of the program seems almost concocted by a new and rising sect to revive these beliefs. Now mind you, I am a practicing Christian and am all for religious tolerance and liberty. But with the 2 narrating hosts that make their occasional appearances between set changes, coming off almost mechanical; he in English, she in Chinese, I almost felt like we were all being set up for some type of indoctrination. It is mentioned that Shen Yun is banned in Communist China, and some of the portrayals of religious persecution in Maoist China are quite effective. Which caused me to question whether these performers were based in Taiwan? At least this was my thinking from the outset. But nope! Although many of the performers were born in China, Shen Yun originates and is based in New York City where it got its start some 10 years ago. At the end of the performance, we are invited to join them again next year for a whole new show. It apparently changes every year. But quite frankly, once was enough for us and truth be told we were way more delighted by the Chinese acrobats we remember seeing at Six Flags Magic Mountain, some 25-30 years ago. I came here for my first Josh Groban performance so therefore I hold some bias. However, the Granada Theater is a very intimate setting and has a very classic ambiance to it. I got to sit in the orchestra seating somewhat close to the stage and had a pretty decent view. I also sat in the box seats which are close as well, however it's at an angle, therefore it depends on the performance and if you'd rather have a direct view or not. The seats in the orchestra level are quite comfortable and plushy, I'm assuming the balcony seats are the same. I cannot say the same for box seats they are not as comfortable. The theater is small, but still quite beautiful. In addition the staff are very nice people. Bathrooms are nice and clean for any of you who are curious. read more

I went to The Granada Theatre to watch and listen to a live performance required by my music professor. I mention the concert was required because I want to emphasize that even though I'm neither a music major nor a fan of operatic music, I was still able to recognize and appreciate the majesty of this historic theater and the great talent it provides for the Santa Barbara community. The performer was Joyce DiDonato, a Grammy Award winning vocalist! Her lovely voice projected beautifully throughout the opulent, gold-toned interior of the theater. This was my first time ever coming to the Granada Theatre and it was pretty awesome! Not a crazy huge theatre but a lot bigger than I had expected based on what I could see from the outside. It really sits in a great location, close to some great restaurants, lounges, bars, and a little over a block away from the Arlington Theatre. The interior was beautifully designed and decorated. So much detail was put into the walls, ceilings, stairways, and everything else in between. I came there last night to see Felipe Esparza and had a great time. I sat in the orchestra section and it was really a good view of the stage from anywhere down there. Did not make it up to the balcony section but did make it to the bar upstairs which sells hard liquor. Only beer and wine is available at the bar area downstairs. The sound and lighting throughout the show was perfect, and every staff member I encountered was courteous and very helpful if we had any questions. I look forward to coming back to the Granada Theatre for more shows in the future! read more

I love visiting theaters, especially those which have been part of a towns heritage. This is no exception. In the heart of state street, the main shopping/ dining drag in Santa Barbara, Built in 1924, it underwent a gutting and revamp to bring it to its present state. And it is beautiful, from its entrance, to its seats. We went for a performance by a local street muso made big called Benice; a Spanish guitarist. While talented, he had the self confidence to surround himself with excellent artists in their own right; notably his drummer and violinist. But I digress. There are some partings on the side streets, but we walked from our hotel, 2 miles away. Considering it's all shops and stalls it was a pleasant walk. There is a parking garage nearby but street parking( off state ) is free after6 and on Sundays. The entrance was open, with a medium sized foyer, leading to the stairs. We had box seats, which means walking through back doors to get there. But it was worth it. Not only do you feel like the queen of ( insert your favorite kingdom here........) , but you get extreme space. The view is slightly side obstructed but worth it. They offer champagne box service ($50-180) but my missus got to enjoy a bourbon and ginger instead. There is a bar on both levels but the lines were longer than they should've been. The acoustics were good but could've been a little better. Whether it was the staging, the box or the venue it was hard to say, but at timed it was difficult to hear Benice's patter. If you want to feel like a high society gal, you can either watch an episode of Downton Abbey whilst drinking tea from fine China, or you can visit The Granada Theatre. Whenever I visit The Granada, I feel as though I've been whisked back to the Gilded Age of summer parties at a Vanderbilt mansion in Newport. Gold and mirrors everywhere, ushers in red vests, wall sconces casting warm, glowy light and ornate details on every surface. As soon as you step through the doors, you'll feel like you need to be on your best behavior. I've seen bad performances and I've seen good. I've seen someone dance across the stage with the grace of a vending machine, and I've seen someone else beautifully execute a Plié en Deboulé (I don't really know ballet terminology). But it doesn't matter because whether the performance is good or bad, you're sitting in the most beautiful performing arts theatre in Santa Barbara. Which can also be a learning experience. For example, I've learned that The Granada is funded by very wealthy people such as the Towbes family (who own most of Santa Barbara), the Chrisman family (who I'm sure are nice people, if they will allow you to get to know them), and that terrible Wendy McCaw over at the Santa Barbara News Press. I've also learned that any time a rich person donates money, it comes with the condition that they be allowed to put their name on something. Which is why, when you visit The Granada, you'll see someone's name on just about everything. From the McCune Founders Room, to the Wendy McCaw Hall (blech). Every chair, every tile, every piece of dark-stained wood is adorned with someone's name. I even found myself checking for names while I was sitting in the restroom stall; Certain I'd find one somewhere on the toilet paper dispenser, or behind the toilet tank. I was equally surprised the employees didn't have tattoos on their forearms with the names of the rich Santa Barbara families who've funded their slightly-above-poverty-level jobs. The Granada is a rich person's pissing match. A second thing I've learned is that there really is a thing called "Santa Barbara Standard Time" and it's about twenty to thirty minutes behind Pacific Coast time. When a show starts at 8pm, many Santa Barbarans consider that a loose suggestion as to approximately when they should leave their homes and begin heading down to the theatre. If anyone in Santa Barbara arrives somewhere on time, or heaven forbid EARLY, you can rest assured it was accidental or they are not originally from Santa Barbara. I'm a stickler with time. My mother always said if you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. And if you're late, you're a selfish jerk. If someone asks me to meet them somewhere, you can guarantee I'll be there early. I don't care if it's unfashionable. The first rule of fashion is there are no rules in fashion. Sometimes I'm so unfashionably early that I have time to catch the matinee performance, or learn a new language. I showed up for my mother's funeral three days before she passed away. When you're early, there's no stress. You can relax and do a little window shopping, or just sit on a bench and quietly judge passersby for wearing mismatched prints or polyester blends (okay, I take back that part about there being no rules in fashion). I've never understood people who are routinely late for everything (which is most people in Santa Barbara). It's far too stressful to live on the edge of your seat like that. When you're early, you have time to enjoy a cocktail or several. I find if I'm slightly drunk, I don't get so annoyed at the other patrons who arrive late, out of breath, with sweat dripping down their brows. Another drawback of living in a city funded by extremely entitled, wealthy people, is they are so very easily offended. Which is why you'll probably never see a show like Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, or 50 Shades of Grey the Musical come to The Granada. And I can guarantee you'll never see Wicked at The Granada because it will hit too close to home for Wendy McCaw. No, the delicate sensibilities of Santa Barbara's elite theatre-goers are too easily offended by risqué, thought-provoking shows. Instead, what you get are "safe" shows such as My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, and Guys & Dolls. Though, to be fair, they are showing Chicago this year so be prepared to witness a member or two of the Board of Directors gasping for breath whilst clutching their pearls somewhere up in the Loge seats. But here I am again dancing on the thin line between positive and negative. The Granada is a truly lovely venue and it doesn't really matter what show you see there. Just go see something. Get there early and have a cocktail. Or bring a flask and make frequent visits to the ladies room like I do. read more

I had my wedding cocktail hour and reception at The Granada Theatre a couple of weeks ago, and it was honestly an amazing experience. I'd highly recommend any bride who might be thinking about having their wedding at a more "unique" venue to look into The Granada Theatre. It is GORGEOUS, and has a historic feeling, and for for me, the I found it so incredible how flexible the space is! If you have any event on the stage, the team at Granada was super open minded to lighting, hanging things (like chandeliers, or marquee lights), layout, etc. Literally any idea that we had, they were basically like "sure, ok!" The team at Granada was also incredibly nice, accommodating, responsive, and helpful. We randomly showed up a couple of times (no appointment) to take a peek at the space, and each time, they were totally cool with either finding staff to take us around, or letting us wander on our own. I got the vibe that they were just really kind, caring people who wanted us to have the best event possible and are really proud of their theater. We were initially a little nervous about the idea of having our wedding in a theater, because we're not theater connoisseurs or anything like that, but when we went to see the space for the first time and saw how gorgeous and flexible it was, we were totally sold. Our guests were blown away by how cool the space was and enjoyed hanging out in the different parts of the theater. ALSO! You get your name on the marquee outside the theater if you get married there.... that's a once in a lifetime opportunity right? :) read more

We were in Baja California and heading back home to the Bay Area so I decided that I would treat my kids to Peter and the Wolf in Santa Monica on Saturday, November 26th. I purchased the tickets in the lodge section for $50 a seat (not cheap) the Friday before the show and I did see that the tickets were final so I said ok I will be sure to leave with plenty of time so that I could make it. I woke up my kids early and left the hotel at 7am so that we could drive to Santa Barbara but it took longer than anticipated at the US Border and then got caught up in traffic in San Diego as well so we called the Granada Theatre at about 10am to ask if they can make an exception and refund the tickets since we were not going to make it in time for the show. We explained our situation to the customer service gals and they said that it was the Symphony's rules that no tickets could be refunded at all. Yes I understand that that it states "all sales are final" but I am sure that there are extenuating circumstances where they can use their discretion and in this case we felt that they did not want to help us out at all. We support the arts in many ways when they need help and it would have been nice that The Granada Theatre would have helped us out in our situation but I guess its more important to stick to the rules then to earn our future business. My wife recently attended an event here held by the UCSB Arts&Lectures program. The personnel and volunteers were very efficient and helpful, they communicated and worked very well with one another and with the public. The venue was clean and attractive. The event went smoothly, thanks to the great organizational skills of all involved. read more
