It was festively decorated for Halloween and had an intimate and cozy feel. Upon sitting down, we were greeted by the friendly bartender who made us feel right at home. Hearing our American accents she asked all about our time in Glasgow, gave us some tips on things to see during our next trip and really made us feel welcome. It's got a great layout with a nice bar and clean toilets. I've been here a few times for a random drink or two with some friends, but never fully savoured the exprience of this place at the weekend. It's not in a good location really, which puts me off. A nice place though, that has a cosy feel. Worth checking out.

A few months back the venue relaunched itself as a pre-club bar, getting reasonably well known DJs in to play at weekends. The problem is that The Gate is nowhere near the vast majority of nightclubs that cater for the new crowd they're trying to aim at (slightly neddy but with plenty cash, likes Ibiza, house music and watching Big Brother), with only Byblos nearby. The result is a place that can be surprisingly quiet on weekends, especially compared to some of it's neighbours. It's a shame because it's actually a very well laid out and aesthetically pleasing little bar. The whole pre-club thing just doesn't seem to work, or even fit with the look and feel of the place. Fingers crossed they'll change it soon.

It has THE absolute most amazing light fittings I've ever seen - literally cherubs hanging from the ceiling holding bunches of grapes (with light inside). Completely trashy but I totally want one! If you spot one (particularly of a standard lamp variety), please let me know ! It has a raised seating section - this is where the party was (complete with dj/karaoke which was actually great fun). Granny Gibbs is full of the tackiest collection of decorative ornaments I've ever seen - from a gigantic fish on the wall & a collection of old teapots, to huge carved heads finishing off the bannisters. Everything here should be just awful and not work, but for some reason everything fits together and is actually quite charming. Cons: Very limited selection of beer on tap: tennents or heinneken were about the best on offer. The gents loo was pretty big - but now looking quite tired and in need of a refurb. The person serving was of the disinterested, don't care, don't want to be there variety. Not exactly friendly, but not particularly nasty either. Broadly speaking, it's not somewhere I'd frequent very often, but I'd be cool with going to another function here.

I think because it's a bit out the way for me I never made the journey. This was the marvellous idea of Miss Angela B. who made a suggestion about a wee Yelp night out to a quiz. Gathering some of the Yelp peeps from all corners of Glasgow and putting our wee heads together to become the all powerful Yelp brain, we headed on down to the quiz night run by Sir James. OK so maybe we weren't a big powerful brain but we certainly had a good laugh. We were in the lead for most of the night, so not bad. I liked Bar Gallus, I liked the atmosphere and the decor was bright. I thought at first it was dead but it certainly filled up and this was only a Wednesday night. It must get pretty busy on the weekend. Oooh the added bonus is they sell fruit beer, hello!! Unfortunately I was driving, school night, so soft drinks it was. Next time!! The quiz was excellent and Sir James (I'm sure he's related to Harry Hill) had it spot on, making it a really enjoyable evening. This pub, although being tucked away on a quiet corner where Church St meets Dumbarton Road, lives up to its name by having a lively atmosphere. Brightly lit and with booths tucked away like little bunkers on each side of the room, you can get yer chat on or have a wee dance to a local band in equal measure. Bands use this space to play quite often - there's a makeshift stage area by the door. This usually draws in a mixed bunch of people, from young cubs to Papa bears (that actually sounds a lot sleazier than I intended, I apologise!) There's a decent selection of booze and the surroundings are nice. But Gallus, for all its prime location, doesn't have the synthesized, pretentious attitude of a style bar, thus making it permeable to all who walk her way. A lovely place to warm your tootsies over a wee whisky this winter!
