Fantastic restaurant, deserving of its accolades (and the drive). To me, Michelin starred restaurants are either great dining experiences or pretentious trying to show off with mediocre food. Three Chimneys is a great experience. Rather than a tasting menu, there are four courses, where you select in each. This process provides variety but allows you to take the dishes that are most appealing (and helpful with my picky family). My first course was wonderful cured salmon which came with an incredible mackerel mousse. Second course we're scallops, seared perfectly but again overshadowed by the accompanying smoked salmon two ways. My third course, normally the "main", was venison, which was cooked ideally. Rare but not at all gamey, the perfect colour. I finished with a cheese plate, which included five delicious, and very varying cheeses with quite helpful tasing notes. Two pieces of advice. The restaurant is quite hard to find and our nav system was pretty far off, try to get directions. When you think you are lost, keep going. Also they have a great vegetarian menu but we almost did not book the restaurant because it is not on the website. read more

To be able to get a behind the scenes picture of everything that goes on was great such a unique opportunity. Was the food good, yes. But not knock your Sox off. Was the ambiance good, it was good enough. Was it worth the arduous drive and the exorbitant price, that is unclear. Are we jaded by NorCal farm to table menus, probably. Three Chimneys has been marketed to tourists in guidebooks and online, but it did not sparkle. It was not a highlight of our trip. If you are in Portree and want well prepared local Scottish food, you can find it there, and avoid a 45 minute harrowing drive in the dark. For $120 per person I expected more. read more

While on Skye we ate at The Three Chimneys to nights in a row. The first night, we had the tasting menu and the second, the three course. Both were fantastic. Really, really, good. The dishes were inventive and the staff were very informative and attentive. I don't know what else to say other than to mirror all of the other reviews. I can't recommend the restaurant enough. Also we stayed two nights at The House Over By... Then inn next door associated with the restaurant. We have never felt more taken care of than we were here. The entire combined experience was will worth the price. And if you stay at the inn you have an automatic reservation at the restaurant. read more

Absolutely incredible. We were at the chef's table and were able to see how everything was prepared which was really fun to watch. The service was excellent too with explanations from each chef along the way on the preparation of each dish (and why each was special). We had our meal back in June 2023 but I still crave it and want to go back for sure. It started out with smoked trout, crab (from the area that was fished out that morning!), and oyster. These were each in separate preparations that were prepared with subtlety but still flavorful. Next was the bread course (of course prepared on site)...really great rye but would have liked a stronger sourdough. Picked mussels were up next followed by the best langoustine I have ever had...incredibly fresh (another thing caught that morning in the local loch). Scallops followed by "rose beef" which was a pate(?). The highland lamb was also the best lamb that I have ever had and then the two desserts were really unique. One was called Pine Needles and it did evoke that but was delicious. The other was a rice pudding souffle which was not as successful. The wine pairing was very thoughtful and they were not stingy on the pour. :) It was a really magical vacation but this meal was definitely a highlight. The restaurant is located in a hotel so there is parking but be prepared for a long dark drive afterwards. It is very remote and there are sheep everywhere. Just getting there, I would add extra time because you will probably be late. They take all cards. read more

Fantastic restaurant in an unexpected location. The menus are well rounded and straightforward: 3 or 8 courses. I had the 3 course menu. It so well done I'm glad I chose this for my first visit. Each dish was a veritable journey onto itself. Accidentally I chose a starter and main course that came with the same sauce. I would have appreciated the waiter alerting me to this but fortunately it did not negatively impact my enjoyment of each dish - partridge and beef, respectively. There are options for game and fish as well plus oysters. Attention to every detail. Wine pairings were sublime. Dessert, the chocolate tart, was adequately portioned and really stood its ground. We tried to get standard reservations but they only had room left at the kitchen table. I didn't realize at the time what a phenomenal experience this was, but am so glad it's something in which we participated. Situated in the actual kitchen, the kitchen table is an exclusive dining experience fitting only 6 people - you and your date (or you alone) and 4-4 of your closest strangers. Don't worry, soon you'll be friends. You're served a 9-course tasting menu with an optional wine pairing at a delightful large wooden table right in the kitchen. You're served by the chefs and they explain and talk about each dish as they place it in front of diners. Honestly it was just an incredible once in a lifetime experience. I cannot speak to anything in the normal dining room, but for the Kitchen Table experience, it was to die for. We'll be talking about this experience for years. The only even slightly-negative aspect was that I was unimpressed with the Somm's ability to talk about the wine beyond its vintner, vintage, and varietal. For the price of the whole package I would've expected more intimate knowledge of the wine and how it fits into the meal, given it's a choice pairing. In the end that wasn't a huge deal, just a minor disappointment. I loved every minute of the experience and am very grateful for having been able to have dinner with wonderful strangers and have a once in a lifetime night. Let's hope someday I can make it twice in a lifetime. read more

The Isle of Skye has 10,000 residents. So how the Three Chimneys does what is does is somewhat of a miracle. This is supreme high-end cuisine at its very, very best! We sampled the "Taste of Skye" 8-course menu with the full wine flight (terrific wines, too!), and it was to die for wonderful. I have been lucky enough to sample the culinary arts of some of the world's greatest chefs and this one doesn't need to hide from any of them. It is truly, deliciously, mind-bogglingly good cooking. One word on seating choices: the Kitchen Table is a tremendous experience as you will be sitting right next to where it is all happening. The team of the Three Chimneys works like a well-oiled machine, no Gordon-Ramsey-esque swearing here and to watch them create this amazing food is a rather unique experience you should try. read more

So grateful to be told about this place and to Amex for scoring me a seat at the kitchen table. Beautiful setting in a remote part of Skye (enjoying dodging sheep and oncoming cars on the single lane road while your phone loses any signal and you hope you remember right how to get there!) So fun to sit in the kitchen with a fun young couple from London and meet all the chefs and watch all the action. Impeccable service, albeit wish they weren't trying to be so formal and proper, thankfully the chefs were really chill. Loved just about everything, hard to pick a winner. The surprise of sorbet with the crab; the smoky taste after they flamed the langoustines; the bread made with dark beer; the genius of pairing sherry with the scallop in miso broth; the warming comfort of the beef and chanterelles with that left over "porridge" from the whisky making process; the outstanding local lamb and beetroots; the succulent apricot, passion fruit cream and salty honey tuile cookie; the beautiful berries, tasty gels and cake crumbs, and finally the chai chocolate. I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to write this review for the Three Chimneys. I've been clinging on to my complimentary copy of the tasting menu we had the pleasure of partaking in almost a year ago. Now the time has come to recall the culinary delights! First of all, the amazing location of this restaurant must be commented on. Nestled away in one of the most remote corners of the Isle of Skye, it's almost impossible to find. We had to stop and ask for directions more than once, and even when we were on the correct road it doesn't seem possible that it will end in a gourmet restaurant. It twists and turns for miles with nothing to see other than outstanding scenery and a multitude of sheep! The journey home in the dark was equally spectacular - we had to stop the car and stand gazing at the sky for quite some time as it contained a blanket of stars, a unique experience. Anyway, back to the restaurant. When you do eventually discover it, it is a delight in itself. A quaint whitewashed cottage in beautiful surroundings. The ceilings are low, the lighting discreet, the whole atmosphere beautiful and cosy. All the staff we encountered were delightful - very knowledgeable both about the food and the wine, and happy to talk about their own experiences and life on the Isle of Skye. We didn't get to meet head chef Michael Smith, but tasting his food was enough on this occasion. We decided to go for the "Seven Courses of Skye" tasting menu. At £90 per person it's not the cheap option but it gives you the opportunity to taste many of the chef's signature dishes, so it's a must for all the foodies out there. I'm not going to list all the courses as the menu can be found on the website (interesting to note that it hasn't changed in the year since our visit) but needless to say, fish features heavily here - prawns, crab, oysters, smoked fish and scallops. The scallops were my least favourite as the delicate flavour of the fish was slightly overshadowed by the curry crust, but all the other dishes were divine. The meat offering was venison and marmalade souffle finished off this culinary adventure. The food is fresh and tasty, and cooked to a very high standard. I'm not sure why the Three Chimneys has missed out on Michelin status for all these years, I've certainly eaten in worse places that have been awarded stars - perhaps the Michelin inspectors are still searching the Island for it! Regardless of it's Michelin status, it's well worth a visit from any self-respecting foodie, for the location and experience, as much as the food. read more

Here's the thing... The Three Chimneys is world-renowned. It's 'one of the world's 50 best restaurants'; it has a five-star rating from the Scottish tourism board; it rakes in many an AA award and rosette. And all deservedly so. Tucked away in almost the furthest most corner of the Isle of Skye, accessible by one-lane roads not guaranteed to be free of the odd passing sheep (I say odd, but actually it's quite common to find a sheep in the road, making the drive even more treacherous), the Three Chimneys exudes quaint style and sophistication. The service is ingratiating yet friendly and encouraging of rapport. The wine list is long, appropriate and varied. The food is as fresh as it gets and served to titillate the modern palate. And all of this warrants its price tag. But all of this also begins to feel a bit stifling. Don't get me wrong. I really appreciate some good service. I liked the fact that I could pick the types of homemade bread from the breadbasket that I wanted to eat before the epic three course meal, including amuse bouches and other small bites acting as palate cleansers or just downright indulgent intermediaries between the main food events. I left feeling not pleasantly satiated, but completely stuffed because of all the food set forth before me. At the end of the night, the front of house manager called us a cab to get us back to our B&B around the corner. Following through on the fabulous service we received, he kept an eye out for the cab driver while we continued our conversation at the table and finished the rest of our dessert. All this said, I wouldn't say that, food-wise, this was the best meal of my life. It was a fabulous experience, and perhaps all the extra thrills and frills goes into the restaurant's fame. The food was undeniably good. But, at the end of the day, perhaps my palate isn't as good as I think it is, because I would be equally happy at a top-notch gastropub that costs less than half the price. That is, only if they let me choose from a selection of homemade breads. As a final note, if you're ever in the Three Chimneys' remote highland neck of the woods, stop and treat yourself to the experience. Because the experience as a whole is truly once-in-a-lifetime. read more

We booked the kitchen table and ended up sharing with another couple show enjoyed the evening as much as we did. The setting itself is great. I prefer it to the main restaurant which is very staid and dark. The kitchen is surrounded by windows thus is bright until well past 10pm. Service was amazing and the entire staff from servers to chef were incredibly welcoming: inviting us to walk around and interact with the staff. Some of us even helped prepare meals (ours, of course). Like another reviewer who had the same menu, the seafood courses are stellar. I too, was not a big fan of the venison. I also preferred the shortbread and tablet to the listed soufle dessert. As this was a special occasion, spending the $$$$ was justified and we were sad to leave almost 5 hours later. read more

Maybe it is because it's so remote, and you feel a natural sense of accomplishment and relief just getting to the place. But I think that objectively the Three Chimneys stands up to its hype. It's the best all around restaurant experience I've had in the UK, and compares to any of the great meals I've had anywhere. Skye is worth visiting anyway -- great hiking, puffins, and whiskey (coupled with much rain and midges, but I'm willing to forgive that). If you make the trek and don't mind one expensive night, Three Chimneys won't let you down. read more

We decided to dine here to start off our honeymoon in Scotland. I'll have to disagree with some of the other reviews in that it didn't meet or exceed our (high) expectations. Agree with the location, surrounds, and venue itself...Skye is an amazing place and the restaurant is quaint and lovely. We chose to sit at the "kitchen table" and do the degustation "taste of Skye" menu with wine pairings. I'll start with the kitchen table. You didn't feel like you were in the action or part of the atmosphere. You're kind of cramped into a corner of the kitchen and don't really have that great of a view...not to mention doors on both sides of you are constantly opened throughout the night. We were there on a particular cold & draughty night (reminder, it's on Skye), so I was freezing. There is zero interaction with the chefs (they make no effort to interact but apparently you're welcomed to waltz around the kitchen which seems like it shouldn't be allowed due to health codes) until they do a "dessert demo" towards the end. We were also shoved onto the table with 5 other diners (total of 7) when it feels like there should ever be maybe 4 or 6 guests (if you all know each other). It just wasn't special and the experience was not great. Food was interesting and nice, but lacked that "wow!" you expect at this level. Portions were great, lots of fresh seafood and local produce, but courses were a bit too spread out in time (we were there 3.5 hours which seemed excessive). With that said, service was great. The Scandinavian sommelier was the highlight of our night...he was knowledgable, friendly, attentive and funny. Wines were also varied and artfully paired. Server was also fantastic. I would love to return and try the restaurant and a la carte menu but I cannot recommend this restaurant for their kitchen table option... For the price (just shy of £400 for two) you'd expect a superior and amazing experience. read more

In July 2013, I had one of the best meals of my life at The Three Chimneys (which, in my opinion, would confit the Fat Duck). As soon as we scheduled our trip to Skye, I emailed them to reserve seats for my husband and me at the kitchen table. Before the meal, we were ushered into the cosy reading room of the inn, where we met the delightful American family with whom we would be sharing the meal. The restaurant assembles up to eight guests around the massive wooden table in a bright nook at the back of their spotless kitchen. The dining chairs sport the unforgiving incline of New England pews - a not-entirely comfortable perch for a four-hour dinner, but it did keep us focused on the nosh. Each course on the generous tasting menu was sublime, showcasing the best crustaceans, bivalves, fish, tender lambs, and plant life that graces the Scottish Western Isles. The wine pairing, too, was superb, with a delightful English bubbly and a surprisingly decent Turkish white in the mix. In between courses, we admired the beautiful grounds, the crates of giant crabs waiting in the dewy grass for their turn in the stock pot (clearly, I'm not a vegetarian), large array of classic cookbooks, and the professional skills and graceful charm of the motley kitchen crew. They even occasionally invited us to help prep and plate our dishes, which turned out to be great fun (especially since we were sloshed). I'm pretty rabid about Scotland, but that night I fell in love. I still treasure the menu card they give you as a souvenir. And yes, if you're coming from overseas, it *is* worth the trip over the hill and through the woods, and the many hours of driving on the wrong side of single-lane, sheep-clogged roads. (While you're at it, hop on the ferry to Harris.) My advice would be to a) wear removable layers, as the kitchen can get pretty toasty, what with the open fires and bubbling cauldrons; b) go with a group of 6 or 8, if you can, to secure the kitchen table for yourself - we had great luck with our party but I can see how dining with the wrong bunch could be trying; and c) act early to book a room at the inn to avoid the long return drive to your b&b. read more

Stayed there recently & dined in the restaurant. Very scenic area, though of course Skye is well known for this. Easy enough to find. Rooms very stylish and very comfortable, staff also exceptional. Booking was required, the place was full even on a late Sept night. I suspect the locals and the holiday cottage owners are regulars all year. Food is all local and beautifully prepared well thought out. Dishes tasted really good, and were prepared as requested. The meal was nicely paced and portions were correctly controlled so we could eat them all up and complete our selections. We found our choices were better matched off the ALC rather than the Taster, but next time.. The wine list is good, but is rather expensive if you want to drink as well as you can eat, though the Rolly Gassman 2005 Gewurtz was very good, if a little sweet (which I like) for an Alsace basic. The Fleurie that followed was characteristic but not exceptional. Dinner was £48 a head plus wines. A couple of which I though about drinking but I would not stretch to £80 odd for, though of course there are lots more wines at higher prices. This has to be one of the nicest places I have ever had lunch in. The service is impeccable, the food divine and the location stunning. It's always booked up in advance, but a little bit of serendipity resulted in me getting a table for lunch at the last minute, making it all the sweeter. The restaurant overlooks a bay, with mountains in the distant. The building is old, with exposed fireplaces and timbers. A main of baked Lanark Blue Cheesecake with mustard leaves, apple and pumpkin seed, Wild Thyme and Shallot Dressing (beautifully served on a slate plate), followed by The Famous Hot Marmalade Pudding with Drambuie Custard was a truly, overwhelmingly, delightful experience. Friends told me about this place saying it was a must, during a visit to Skye. And to think I almost didn't go! It's not cheap, but I wouldn't expect it to be, given the standards it reaches. My husband and I were treated to a superb meal at the Three Chimneys restaurant in November 2008. First off, I have to say, that I am not a great fan of eating out, finding the whole dining experience generally over-rated and expensive. Probably the way I was brought up with mother always saying she could make better for a fraction of the price. She was usually right of course. The restaurant, situated on the shore of Loch Dunvegan at Colbost (not to be confused with Carbost elsewhere on the Island) is very tiny with only 6 tables in the area where we were seated although there are another two, equally small, dining rooms. The menu is mouth-watering and the food deserving of the high praise and the Gold Award recently bestowed upon it. The menu has a set price of around £50 per person and that doesn't include wine. Nouvelle cuisine isn't everyone's idea of a slap-up meal but, believe me, the textures and tastes of fresh salmon and shellfish straight from Skye's own waters or lamb and Highlander beef also reared on the island, means you don't need a plate piled high. The food is presented so beautifully it's worth taking a moment just to gaze at it. The vegetables also are grown locally and are crisp and tasty. It's worth noting that there is also a vegetarian option available to those who don't eat meat. During the course of our dining experience, and because our meals were freshly prepared and therefore could not be expected to arrive within minutes of ordering, we were invited to sample Chef's freshly baked selection of breads and rolls (divine) and, later on, a delightful tiny chocolate pudding each which came in their own dinky little pudding bowls and topped off with the freshest, whispiest cream I have ever tasted. The service is superb with the highly trained staff friendly, efficient and keen to ensure diners are happy with everything. A truly wonderful dining experience and one which I would certainly repeat when celebrating future special occasions. For all of the raves about The Three Chimneys, we were disappointed in the food and service. Unknowingly, we chose the wine flight to accompany our meal, way too expensive--£110 not justified, shame on us for not asking the price first. If you are looking for "small" portions, be our guest, but there are better options available, and 3 1/2 hours is too long for a meal, wait times between courses was not appropriate and we won't return the next time in Scotland. read more

This is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. It is set on the edge of Skye, looking out over the water with the most amazing light, whatever time of day you are there. The food is incredible - British food, home cooked to a very high standard indeed. We had delicious soup, gorgeous beef and some particularly good cheese to finish. There are rooms to stay, very expensive but I can't imagine anything more beautiful than waking up there in the morning and looking out at the view. read more

This has to be my favourite restaurant experience ever! We went to this restaurant twice for lunch whilst on honeymoon and although it's now over 2 years ago my mouth still waters everytime I think of it! We nearly didn't get a table the first time we travelled half way across Skye to try and sample the famous Marmalade Pudding with Drambuie Custard without a reservation - but were lucky there had been a last minute cancellation. The food was amazing! It changes throughout the seasons according to what is available locally. My starter of smoked salmon and quails eggs beautifully displayed on a slate was followed by the most succulent venison and rounded off with the famous pudding. When we finished we booked to come again. The staff were all so friendly and the service excellent. It was worth every penny and we took our coffee outside in the garden both times with a view over the sea. Skye is such a beautiful island and this was the jewel in the crown on our honeymoon! read more

We had lunch at The Three Chimneys the other day and, although the experience started off to be great and memorable, it became memorable in another way. After our main course had been served our waiter became engaged in a very lengthy conversation with a couple at another table and never looked our way again, literally turning his back to us. Very rude and unprofessional. We actually sat there for at 30 minutes before I managed to find the head waiter and ask for our desert menu. After being served desert our waiter left the building with the other couple, leaving us all alone in the restaurant. Everybody else in the whole place had finished and paid. I had to find someone to bring our check and take our money. We finally left at 4:00, 2 1/2 hours after arriving. We had the 3 course lunch. The other waiter locked the door behind us. Terrible experience. Very good food, but they obviously pick and choose the patrons they like and do not like. read more

To enjoy The Three Chimneys to its best ideally you need to stay, either at the House Over-by, their own delux accomodation, or at some accomodation near by. Either that or find a friend to take you and collect you. I took my wife and colleagues to The Three Chimneys a year ago. We hired a taxi from Portree which did add rather a lot to the overall bill. However it was an end of season treat. It was certainly a very worthwhile visit. You must book. We were welcomed upon our arrival and ordered drinks which we had in their snug area. We were then shown to our table. The stone walls and lighting adding greatly to the ambience of the place. We ordered our meals which were served by their excellent and friendly staff. Between each course their were small titbits which were included in the whole meal. The large wine list catered for all tastes. Poor Service. I am not surprised they lost their Michelin star, the level of service was just not up to par. We had a decently good dinner (tasting course--seafood dishes were exceptional, meat dishes unimaginative and leaving quite a bit to be desired) but the level of service was unimpressive throughout and disintegrated at the evening progressed. Towards the end of the dinner (we were a 9:15 seating) our service was scattered , with longer wait times between courses, to the point where it took us 20 minutes to pay our bill when we were clearly ready to go. The kicker, however, was when I left my bag at the restaurant and upon arriving to my hotel realized that key was in my bag and we were locked out. Called the restaurant to explain, they were slightly dismissive on the phone, but emphasized that we had no way to get into our lodging and needed to return immediately to get the bag. They said that they couldn't guarantee reception would still be opening, at which point we entreated them to leave the bag outside the door. They said they would and hurried me off the phone. When we drove the half hour back to the restaurant, no one was there and the bag had not been left outside. We slept in our car, and missed our flight the next morning. When I called the restaurant to complain, they said that there had been a misunderstanding and they hadn't left the bag outside. They offered up some lame "we'll make sure it won't happen again" -- no token of apology, or offer of any type of reimbursement. This was simply not the type of service for a restaurant purporting to be of this level, and your money would be better spent elsewhere. read more
