I was here about a month ago and for some reason, I kept thinking about the conversation that I had with the owner about coffee. He was very sweet the place was unique. You can tell that he cares a lot about his business.. I don't like some of the comments that are saying well " does he live there?" "his dog shakes next to the food." (did you take a second to ask why the dog is even there in the first place? It's a servers pet... and he has a name Whiskey). When I stopped by, I was a solo traveler just checking out the thumb of Michigan on my own time. I wasn't expecting much but was met with a great cup of coffee and a man just trying to make his small business something enjoyable ahead of me in line was a debt collector telling this poor man he is overdue.. I'm shocked. I used to come here years ago and it was a decent place. Today was a complete 180. The place is covered in trash and there are major health department concerns everywhere. The spoons used to stir the drinks are sitting in dirty water and the milk steamer wasn't being wiped down between drinks. I even ordered mine with oat milk after my friend ordered hers with 2% and it wasn't wiped down in between. Thankfully I don't have an allergy or intolerance. The cleanliness of this establishment is severely lacking. Like, someone needs a health dept inspection... Looks like beginning of a hoarders situation. Not safe or clean. Couldn't trust the coffee. The man working was nice enough but was very confusing and so it was an off putting experience all together. The entire atmosphere is off. I wanted to like it so much so that I felt guilty even leaving this review but I wish I would have seen more updated reviews like this before coming myself. I shouldn't feel guilty. I've been coming to this coffee shop/laundromat for the past four years whenever I'm in Port Austin. The coffee has always been mediocre, but it's been the only place around with decent Wi-Fi and laundry machines. Unfortunately, my most recent visit will be my last. After starting several loads of laundry (paid in cash only--no cards accepted), I stepped out briefly with my kids. We returned about 15-20 minutes after the wash cycles ended, only to be met by the owner, who informed me he had already moved some of my laundry and was charging me $6.50 for the service--which I was willing to pay. However, he also demanded an additional $10 for "lost business," claiming he had to turn customers away, despite having moved my laundry so his machines were available. When I explained that I only had $12 in coins left and offered them to cover the charge, he refused and publicly told me not to come back--right in front of other customers. He lectured me about paying arbitrary fees and insisted it was my "responsibility as a young man." There are no signs posted anywhere about wait times, switching fees, or penalties for unattended laundry. On top of that, the place is unclean and cluttered. Boxes are stacked everywhere, most tables in the café area are covered with stuff, several machines are broken or unreliable, and the so-called accessible restroom is blocked by old coffee equipment. This place is unprofessional, poorly maintained, and run by someone who treats customers with hostility instead of understanding. I will not be returning, and I'd recommend others think twice before supporting this business. read more

This is easily the most disgusting and unsanitary business I have ever stepped foot in. The space resembles a hoarder's house rather than a functioning coffee shop and laundromat. It is completely overwhelmed high piles of trash, stacks of random boxes, dirty dishes, clutter, and thick dust on every surface. Filthy espresso cups and dirty dishes are left piled high and sitting out everywhere. There was not one location that was clear, even the stove had items piled high on it. I was looking around to see if there were bugs, I felt dirty just standing inside the building. I noticed a water jug sitting on a dirty chair with a tube running into the espresso machine; this appeared to be a makeshift gray-water drain system rather than proper plumbing. The lack of food safety here is alarming. I watched the barista "rinse" a spoon by dipping it into a cup of water, then use that same spoon to stir multiple customers' drinks--a massive cross-contamination and health hazard. The counter had a dirty pizza clutter and a knife that was used it the butter multiple times with crumbs everywhere. While they also claim to sell "gluten-free" cookies, this environment is entirely unsafe for anyone with severe allergies or Celiac disease. To top it off, a massive dog roams freely, shaking fur near open food, leaving chewed toys on the floor, and jumping onto furniture. I left without ordering. The health department needs to visit this establishment immediately. Avoid for your own safety. read more

Really wanted to like this place. We were in Pott Austin looking for coffee before we hit the beach. The reviews here looked promising and let's be honest there are no other options. It was really dirty, like health department concerns dirty. The worker was so nice and thoughtful. The coffee was fine. There are a lot of options, but overall just pretty disappointing. I struggled with whether to write this one or not but ultimately decided to do it cos I felt like the star rating, which they very well may have earned in the past, does not live up the the current experience and it should reflect it as such. My husband and I were in Port Austin for the day and desperately in search of coffee. The reviews here were positive so we stopped in and from the jump I felt uncomfortable. First, the place feels lived in. And I don't mean that in a good way. I joked later that it felt like it was someone's house with a coffee counter shoved in. There was just junk everywhere. Boxes of papers with invoices stacked on the chairs, chewed up dog toys and rawhide strewn about, the shelf with the cream and sugar was packed with personal items. It was uncomfortable to even move around in there. The irony of this place being called "clean bean" was not lost on us. Strike on. Also, I love dogs. LOVE. Have 2 of my own and treat them as if they're my babies. So encountering a dog here was nice and it was very cute and sweet. But maybe a big dog inside by the coffee counter wasn't the best place? The spot was so packed it just didn't seem like it had much room to move around so it jumped on a lot of the furniture that customers were meant to sit on? Also, again, it's a big dog and at one point it jumped up on me, paws on my chest, to say hi and not once did the guy behind the counter bat an eye in our direction. I could have been allergic or terrified of dogs. It just didn't feel appropriate and left me feeling even more uncomfortable. Strike two. Finally the guy running the counter was exhausting. We were waiting for him to make a few beverages for the lady in front of us and there was a lot of mansplaining about espresso and complaining about a chain competitor (who doesn't even have a location within 50 miles of this place, trust me after this I looked). At one point he kind of snipped at the lady and my husband I just exchanged looks, an unspoken "strike three" if you will, and we walked right out. I was already depleted just from listening to him, I'm not sure I could have handed small talk myself. This place could have the best coffee on the planet and I wouldn't go back because the whole vibe is just off. They literally have a lock on coffee in town and probably rest on these laurels but I will 100% be willing to drive 25 minutes to the next town over to get something instead of going here. It seems like it used to be a great place and I hope they can get back to it. It looks like they also have a laundromat attached which is a great idea, but I just don't know where I would feel comfortable sitting waiting for my clothes. They've just really gotta spend some time tidying and cleaning and reorganizing. I sincerely hope they can take the time to get back to their former 4 star greatness. read more

We stumbled on this place by accident. It was awesome. We were in port Austin for 4 days and we came back every morning. Whiskey (the owners dog) greets you. Everything about the place just makes you feel welcome! Just like you are having coffee at your buds house! The barista (haha I know boujee term) was great! Great coffee shop for a beverage, smoothie, or a pastry. I holed up in here to do an online class on their wifi. Coffee was good. I could personally do without the menu across the two TV screens-- which doesnt even match what they have online and seems garish in the generally unremarkable interior decor- but the rest of the space was fine. I was greatly disappointed to see how unkept, cluttered and dirty my favorite laundromat has become. Upon entering I was greeted by a friendly doodle which was cool! However, I had to navigate around stacks and tubs of stuff in the general public area to the laundry room with very full arms. In the general waiting area though, I tried to find a clean spot to sit down. Tables were not wiped down, floors needed mopping and the coffee/bakery area was so cluttered and stacked with half empty food containers, I decided against ordering a latte. Ironically there was a sign on the bulletin board that non-service animals are not allowed in the food establishment. Clean Bean needs to clean up their act before I go back. read more

Dirty, dog hair everywhere...under garments left on the table, odd baskets of dirty clothes left out. Not sure who they belonged to, no one came in for the hour and a half I was there. Machines were not clean, had to wipe it down before I put my soap in. Caked with layers of soap and dog hair. Layers of dust on them, on the window sills. Coffee spills on the table. No running water in the bathroom. No social distancing, not everyone wearing masks. Owner not wearing masks. I needed change and it was as if I interrupted her conversation with her father. If you don't care for dogs, don't go because their dog will bombard you. Very dissatisfied and will not be back there. So sad to have a quaint little place with a laundry mat in our beautiful city and for it to be so untidy. read more

The only place in Port Austin to get decent coffee. They do know how to spell, say and make espresso! Also a nice selection of high quality pastries. I didn't need to do any laundry, but if I did while in Port Austin this is where I would go. How cool to do your laundry and while you're waiting, you get to hang out in a nice lounge. Excellent Coffee but... I am not interested in carrot cake or cheese cake at 9am, 2PM or even 5pm.... Or ever unless I'm done with dinner and it was great.... Sorry. I want breakfast sandwiches or light lunch to go quick. Quick, Cheap and ready in minutes. bagels, oatmeal, pizza, sandwiches. No one does this in this area, and if they do it's not quick and not very good! The town doesn't have anyone who caters to the Kayaker's who want to get up early, grab something light and go on their way! Boaters like us dream of a place like this where we can: A) get a great cup of coffee, B) connect to home and business via WiFi, C) catch up on the news of the day, and D) do all this while we're doing our laundry. We met the Canadian couple who own this place, which is only three months old as I write this. They had a smart, multi-use vision for this building, which you simply cannot tell was once a four-bedroom doublewide model. No space is wasted: For 12 bucks, you can take a shower, with towel, fresh bar of soap and shampoo provided; you can also do some banking at their ATM. Drink your latte in a light-filled, partially paneled room done up in colors that remind me of a Panera. A flat-screen TV is attached to a stone wall over the gas fireplace and a mantle stocked with books you can add to or borrow. On Thursday nights, they're offering movie night, a great addition to a town with no theater. The super-clean laundry room has nine stacked washers and dryers plus a large-load washer and dryer. If you're too busy enjoying the many quiet charms of this harbor town, you can drop off your laundry and pick it up later in the day. Don't have your own laptop? Borrow one of two computers in the small, on-site business center, which also has a conference table. From the warm blueberry muffins to the decaf mocha, my husband and I found nothing that's not to like about this little place, which should do well, even in the off-season because of all it has to offer. read more

Family visiting Port Austin and really needed a good coffee. What a great latte! Son's cappuccino also exceeded expectations. Great coffee beans, and I believe it was the owner who made the coffees. A man whom I assume is the owner of this shop just made sure that my family will never be back by treating us with utmost rudeness. Because there were no parking spots on the road and because I was waiting in the car while my daughter got a coffee and because there's no sign prohibiting it, I parked in the driveway while she ran in. The man pulled up behind me blocking me in and began unloading things from his car. He could see me sitting in my car so I thought it was odd but I figured he'd let me out when my daughter came out. Nope. My daughter VERY politely apologized for parking there and asked him to let us leave and he refused and kept unloading. I got out of the car and reminded him that I would gladly have moved if he had asked me and that now he had alienated us as customers. That didn't do it either. He just kept doing his business while we waited. It seems like a bad business model. I live in Port Austin and I know lots of people. Remember, at no time were we anything but polite. You must all decide for yourselves, but my family will never be back. read more
