The Rake & Riddle caters for everyone with a tidy sized restaurant, sports bar and cafe. There is an outdoor seating area and play area for the kids. With a tidy sized car park to the rear. I had the mixed grill, which was cooked perfectly, and my wife had the Gammon which she thoroughly enjoyed. The chips that came with both are cooked just like regular chip shop chips, which is a major plus from us. The price is comparable with similar restaurants and I felt the portions were good value for the money.

The rooms are recently refurbished but based on the original layout so they tend to be a good size with high ceilings. The inclusive breakfast included a good selection of cereals and also a traditional cooked breakfast options. The cooked breakfast was pretty good, although the sausages were rather bland. Dinner was much better. Starters cost £4.50 to £6.00 and included a fish cake and a ham hock and smoked chicken terrine. Mains range from around £10 to £20 and included a pork fillet dish, a stuffed chicken breast and Fillet steak with a pepper corn and mushroom sauce with potatoes dauphinoise or chips and seasonable vegetables. Puddings included some traditional English sweets, and cheese and biscuits. The food was very good, well prepared and well seasoned, but the gaps between courses were a little long. The hotel has a small car park which is rather difficult to find and the entrance is challenging. Drive North East past the hotel down to the church, bear left around the church and come back down behind the hotel on St Peter's Street then onto King Street. The entrance to the car park is a narrow alleyway on the left just after the Hugh Evans butcher's shop: swing wide to the right and turn hard left into the alleyway. Be prepared to fine tune your approach because the alleyway is very narrow not wide enough for pedestrians to pass a car, so breath in as you drive down! Once you have gone down the alleyway the car park itself is reasonable with room for about 13 cars. I enjoyed my brief stay at the Spilman's Hotel, and the dinner in particular was a very pleasant surprise: recommended.

How many ways can I say YUM?…read more I first experienced the wonder that is the Plantaganet one Christmas, when the the pivotal three couples in our group of 'kids' munched a glorious meal here. It was amazing. Salmon that melted in the mouth, steaks as soft as butter... Incredible. As a result we've been back countless times since and booked the entire place out for last New Year's Day, something which shall doubtless be happening this year too. If you can catch it in winter, do have some of the delicious mulled wine they serve at the bar. The bar itself is gorgeously decked out in wooden furnishings with lush little wicker cushioned seats and quirky features. The staff are super attentive and the proprietor is something of a character. But the real stars are the dishes themselves. This place does fantastic mussels (fish and shellfish are a bit of a speciality here), the meat is cooked to perfection and the sides they provide you with are insanely tasty. Oh and you must have the bread to pick at for the start of your meal, baked fresh and full of olives and sundried tomatoes. It's a rabbit warren of a place with winding stairs, and it's family friendly and harbours tons of charm and character. I can never wait to come back here whenever I leave Wales. Do try it!

My two complaints with the terrace are that you need to go inside to order and pay (but at least they come out and serve your food to your table) and that the menu is condensed. I saw duck and mussels on their Bar & Terrace menu online and was really looking forward to both, but neither were offered the day we went. I would have loved it if they had maybe one or two more options available, because nothing else on the menu was really calling my name. I ended up having the crab pate, which was good, but in my opinion there wasn't enough crab to call it a "crab pate." And it needed something to cut the richness. My husband had the Scotch egg and was pleased because it was so unique -- it had haddock in lieu of sausage. But he says he would have appreciated some warning before-hand, he didn't expect to bite in and it taste like seafood! Both dishes looked very modern, which added to their appeal.
