Actually 4.5 stars! I rarely give 5stars. The half star reduction was because it was a bit chilly in the restaurant and that made our, well prepared, fool cool down quickly. The portions were great and hopefully i can post pictures! The potato/ cheese soup was exceptional. My wife's Mexican omelot arrived on a plate sized tortilla! Very cool. They have a large selections of bread for toast. The place was very neat and clean and our server, Dixie, was fast, friendly, efficient, and a hoot! Street parking! read more

Seriously, almost tearfully, I have to rescind my kind words about the Greenwood. In the past they have been well deserved. I don't understand the recent changes. All the neat decorations are still there, some of the old staff is still there, but something is desperately wrong. The cook doesn't even know how to make hollandaise sauce and takes forever to make small orders. There aren't enough wait staff to handle even the now-dwindling customer base. Whoever makes the coffee has forgotten how. Something has to be done or this place, which has long been a centerpiece of the community, will destroy itself with its negligence. read more

20 min to have order taken, 30 min for breakfast to be served. Mexican skillet has canned ingredients (tomatoes, cheese sauce). Biscuits and gravy: gravy was brown. Biscuits turned to mush under the gravy so it was basically a thick paste. Toast and hash browns were ok. Interior needs a thorough cleaning and update. We sat near the kitchen and heard a cat meowing? We only heard it once, not sure where it was coming from. $36 spent and was unfortunately really disappointed. read more

Our experience here was not great. The food was poorly prepared and the omelet had canned tomatoes. The service was ok but only my husband was offered more coffee or hash browns with onions. The rest if us were ignored. The hashbrowns were pretty tastless. I always enjoy buttery, brown hash browns. These were not. If you've ever driven from the Twin Cities to The Dells/Madison/Milwaukee/Chicago, you've driven past Tomah. You may have even stopped for gas and some eats. But you have probably not BEEN to Tomah. And I think you should. Take the extra few minutes and go beyond the Perkins and the McDonald's. Drive into the charming main drag with its supper clubs, yoga studio and biker store. We hit the Greenwood Cafe for lunch on a Friday and knew we were in the right place as soon as we stepped inside. Weird, but wonderful. A group of 8-10 regulars at the counter were each enjoying a cup of joe while chewing on toothpicks and solving the ills of the world. A table of about 6 cops and highway patrols on their lunch break dug into soup and patty melts. They serve breakfast all day along with a few sandwiches and burgers. I opted for Dave's Daily Scramble, a large serving of hash browns topped with scrambled eggs, a thick slice of ham and cheese sauce. Multigrain bread came on the side and was served with a packet of marionberry jam, something you don't usually see unless you're on the West Coast. Every wall is covered with taxidermy, Packers paraphernalia and holiday decorations. Does a fawn on top of the revolving pie cabinet make you hanker for dessert? Not in my case. Although the food is good, it is nothing special from any other home cooking restaurant. The man issue is price. All items are very overpriced. For example, $8.95 for biscuits and gravy (no sides.....just 2 biscuits and gravy). Or a patty melt for $9.95 - includes a side of store bought potato chips. Will not be returning. read more

We aren't from Tomah, my spouse is working on the base for a period of time. This place is a local staple, and the service was really great. We both had egg dishes, and my spouse was very happy with her omelette. I was also happy with my eggs over medium, and I really enjoyed the hash browns. If you are traveling and happen to be in Tomah, DO NOT EAT HERE. My party of 4 didn't expect to be blown away by the food here. We've all eaten plenty of greasy spoon food and hoped for the best. Upon entering, we took a look a the menu and almost got up and left. The menu wasn't really wowing us, and I've never seen so many spelling errors on a menu before! The taxidermy animals everywhere didn't help matters. But we were hungry and decided to stay, and expected mediocre greasy food. The food was just awful. Even by greasy spoon diner standards, this was just garbage. We waited about 25 minutes for our food, even though they weren't that busy, and we ordered pretty simple meals. My Mexican Scrambler was absolutely disgusting. I didn't eat a lot of it, and I'm shocked it didn't make me sick. The menu made no mention of nacho cheese being dumped on top of the scrambler. A LOT of nacho cheese. Blegh. Two of us ordered burgers, which I'm told were pretty terrible. The steak sandwich was also not very good. Everyone was amazed at how terrible the food was. The bathrooms were disgusting. Just nasty. The service wasn't that good. Of the two employees who waited on us, only one was what I would consider decent. As we were approaching Tomah, we joked about stopping at Perkin's, as everyone knows that the food there is pretty bad. The food at Greenwood Cafe was several notches below Perkin's Restaurant. We stopped here on the way back from LaCrosse to Milwaukee. It's a nice Wisconsin cafe in the middle of Tomah, although the decor didn't sit well with some of my fellow diners (lots of stuffed animals all over the place). I had a cheese, bacon, tomato, mushroom and onion omelette. It was a 3-egg omelette, but the egg wasn't fluffy. However this thing was stuffed full of cheese, with plenty of roasted tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and bacon. The toast was made extra great with jams and preserves that were made with actual sugar (no high fructose corn syrup). And the coffee was above par, especially in terms of standard diner-grade coffee. All in all, a great place to stop for a quick and tasty breakfast. Ya-der-hey, dontcha know. read more

What an amazing experience! I've been here two times before today and I did not realize they closed at 1400 on Sunday. I walked into the back door that was still unlocked and greeted by staff. My waitress promptly seated me and I questioned if they were still open. She politely informed me that they were not and asked what I would like to eat. She put my order in right away and got me a cup of coffee. I have never been treated so well especially when I was in the wrong. I will continue to come here due to this. We had: 2 egg oe, hashbrowns raisin toast, 2 egg ham & cheese omelette, sourdough toast, coffee. We also revisited & had the same things (breakfast creatures of habit). The fact that we went back & had the same thing should be enough of a comment that yes, it was good & yes, we will (& did) go back! Courteous & efficient waitresses. Just once had to get up & get some refridge jam. Lots of locals on a Sunday early morn. The taxidermy isn't bad, it is the middle of WI & big time hunting area. I just returned to this place twice this summer (I'm not from Tomah, I just Vacation near by). I love this place. Pancakes are so good not too sweet and perfectly fluffy. Corned beef hash is so good too. Those french toast are delish! On behalf of my grandparents who also come here when they are visiting during the summer. They are pleased with how the waitresses remember them even though they are out of town and only stop by in the summer. The waitresses remember what they usually order. EVERYONE working there has been so kind. This place brings great memories to our family and we will continue to visit while in Tomah. read more

If I could give it less than a star, I would...a little awkward walking in, decor seemed to be 1960s striped wallpaper, with tons of taxidermy everywhere that seemed it hasn't been touched, also in the 60s. Reminded me of a little cafe in the small Wisconsin town I grew up in. This place just about defines the Midwest. Good coffee, friendly people, locals sitting around talking football and politics. We have been on the road for almost a month. This was the best breakfast we have had yet. Hubby had the veggie omelet that was full of veggies- hash browns were outstanding-crispy on the outside and moist inside and raisin bread was sweet. I had the French Toast. The worse fish I've had yet I had fried cod with French Frys and coleslaw fish was under cooked and watery, coleslaw was terrible best part was the Frys. As for the service also great for breakfast terrible for fish fry young waitress was too worried about talking to the cook, no ice in our drinks and had to ask a different waitress for things because ours was too busy talking also said thanks about 5 different times and no reply. We were here for breakfast on a Saturday about 11am. My husband had 2 pancakes. They were HUGE and very light and fluffy . He couldn't eat them all. I had eggs hash browns and toast. The eggs were poached and very good. The hash browns were extraordinary good! I asked for extra crispy and they were. I had cinnamon toast. I think it was just white bread toasted with cinnamon sprinkled on top. Very good, my mom used to do that. The decor was very rural. Stuffed wildlife. The table next us had burgers.
