We really enjoyed our stay at the Greystone Inn. What a classy five star historic hotel. Highlights included windows and a private porch overlooking the lake, kayaking around the lake in the Inn's free kayaks. Our friend also rented a boat from the marina next door and we had a lovely day out on the porch. The restaurant has a new chef and the food was delicious. We also enjoyed hanging out at the bar in the Inn. The staff was extraordinary. We will be coming back to stay at the Greystone Inn many more times. read more

If you grab a drink at the bar, you must get it from "Johnette". She is sweet and personable and my family and I look forward to seeing her every-time we stop in. The cocktails are crafty at the little bar and the view is beautiful. The Greystone is a beautiful inn with tons of history. They had someone playing soft music and a lit fireplace creating an inviting environment. The food at the restaurant downstairs is great too. If you have the opportunity to, I recommend grabbing a drink and bringing it on a small boat ride on Lake Toxaway, you can book with the people at the front of the inn, where you can hear the history and see the houses of many famous individuals along the lake. read more

Second time staying here (first was for my birthday in September and this time was celebrating NYE)-- I cannot write enough good things about this place. The grounds are unbelievably beautiful and I'm consistently blown away by The Greystone Inn. We somehow got upgraded from the mansion superior king room (which we stayed in last time) to the mansion premium terrace room...WOW!!! The terrace is incredible and has the most insane views of the lake and grounds. Also incredible stargazing at night!! The restaurant is just steps away from the mansion and the food is stellar!! I'm always so sad to leave but we're already talking about when we can return. I recommend this place to anyone wanting a serene and luxurious getaway!! read more

I was told that this is under new owners, and everything seems recently renovated with casually elegant decor. Lovely Inn with a beautiful view of Lake Toxaway! We enjoyed our complimentary sparkling before boarding Miss Lucy in the boat house for a complimentary boat tour of the entire lake. John gave us the full story about the history of the lake, the original Toxaway Inn, the flood of 1916, and the Greystone Inn. We stayed in the Edison room just up the stairs on the second floor. Because this building is on the National Register of Historic Places, there is no elevator. Our room was very comfortable. Turn down included a lovely pitcher of ice water with lemon slices, a filled ice bucket, and chocolates. There is a Keurig in the room for morning coffee as well as coffee available in the lobby. Comfortable bed, but a bit high for my short legs (suggest a bed step). Heated floor in bathroom. read more

After a pleasant drive through the twists and turns of the Blue Ridge Parkway, we stopped for lunch at the Greystone on a beautiful fall day. Was welcomed warmly by our server into the beautifully set dining room, right by the window overlooking the lake. Ordered a seasonal martini (pumpkin with graham cracker crumb rim) and a beer along with the flatbread with goat cheese and squash appetizer. It was the best thing I've eaten in a long time! Warm flatbread topped with soft goat cheese, caramelized squash and onions. Enough for two. Entrees ordered were the trout with squash and chorizo hash with candied jalapeños and a steak sandwich with fries. The trout was good (very small fillet) and hash was just spicy enough. Could have used a baguette or bread along side, or a bright bit of green salad. Steak on soft baguette was a bit tough (I would have preferred it slight more rare) and covered with sautéed peppers and melted cheese but the fries were too-notch. Thin, crispy, hot and salty. I wish the baguette would have been toasted and I think this offering came with a small side salad. Ambience is everything- sat at the window overlooking the tranquil lake. Servers were perfect-personable and knowledgeable about the menu and the area. Price is up there, paying for a high-end lunch was planned for so no surprises there. Small menu, servings were in the small-ish side (maybe lunch portions? Prices did not reflect a difference between lunch and dinner) but would def want to return again. What a wonderful two night stay at this gorgeous renovated property. All the history details are noted elsewhere in the reviews. An easy drive from the Greenville, SC area. That the temperature in Lake Toxaway was a 15 degree different (on the cooler side), made it a double bonus. This is a solid four star hotel. What is not to love about this property? That each and every staff member takes pride in what they do - and going waaaaayy beyond in exceeding their guests' expectations is the Number One Reason we will be back. This is where they earn the fifth star from us. From the easy hotel reservations online, making arrangements for a surprise Birthday Cake with Melanie, last minute spa appointments through Kendra, a warm welcome by our fantastic server, Daniel, to great drinks by Ryan and a fantastic fresh picnic basket for our 3 hour pontoon rental by the chef. On a side note: the breakfast has been changed to a daily buffet and gone was the avocado toast with poached eggs I was craving for. They were in the process of changing out the room service menus in the guest rooms, but haven't made it to ours yet. We were craving something more different than a continental breakfast (albeit it was a good one) or the upgrade to the eggs and meats. Ironically, all we wanted was the eggs and meats, and wished that the juice, coffee, etc. could have been the "add-on" versus the protein part. Anyways, its still good, but a bit redundant if you are staying more than one night. Can't wait to experience this beautiful hotel in the other seasons. read more

We were staying here in the area for the first time and had dinner here. The service was amazing (Alexis was our server) and the food was out of this world! I had scallops over polenta that were the best I have ever had. My friend had Chicken Carbonara that was so delicious! The four of us all enjoyed our meals and the lovely lake view! We visited tonight for dinner. There were pros and cons. Location. Beautiful setting lake front. It's not hard to find this place but you wouldn't end up here by accident either. The lake front dining is down the hill and looks like you're headed into some old boat shed but once you open the door you're in a beautiful dining room. We were greeted promptly and got our table immediately. We had reservations. Our server was fast to arrive and took our water order. You can buy sparkling, spring, or get tap water. I assume the tap water is free. We paid $8 for a large bottle of spring water. She returned and took our drink order and dinner order. Cocktails run around $16, beers range $4-8, and wines seemed to start around $48 My beer was cool but not cold. We were given a dinner roll each with plenty of butter. It's was warm and soft. Our meals came out pretty fast. Too fast for it to be freshly prepared from scratch. She had the chicken carbonara. The chicken was definitely precooked. The risotto was tasty. But, it was very Olive Garden like. Fancy microwaved meal is what I'd compare it too. It was covered in cilantro and instead of bacon it had pork belly. My wife doesn't like either of those but picked around it. I had the pork chop. It was a nice cut with bone in and not much fat. It was so tough though. It took some sawing and chewing to work it down. It was dry. The exterior was charred a bit much. It came over a apple flavored pasted that tasted as it was from a can and some collards. The collards were advertised as crispy. That was accurate. Be mindful there are no sides, souls, or salads included in the price tag. Those are considerably extra. Now, I know it sounds win being thrifty here but I'm not. I will pay good money for food and be happy. But for Olive Garden quality (less actually) and high prices I was not pleased. The service was excellent and the views are great. We went here for a romantic dinner and got that other than the disappointing food. read more

Recommendation: The Greystone Inn on Lake Toxaway for your next mommication or family trip. I went for a mommication (end of March) and had an amazing, peaceful and relaxing trip. My soul was restored! I wanted to be near water and the mountains and this was perfect. I had a beautiful room with a fireplace, had very good food and drinks! The staff was soon accommodating. I extended my stay and after noticing how much I was sitting outside reading they gave me a room with a balcony/patio that gave me the best view of the lake on the third floor. During the summer they have an array of family activities from water, tennis, cricket, hiking (they are tons of waterfalls nearby), the property is right near a country club with a golf course. They remodeled and opened in last March so everything was still fresh. The turndown service, which I took advantage on my last night. Oh the Lake is private so only the residents and those staying at the Inn can utilize it. That's a plus for crowd control. There is an evening boat ride that includes the history of the original Lake Toxaway Inn. Pretty neat to learn about all the deatils and how the area was major attraction! They have spa services too. There is a nearby town that's 30 mins away and it's really cute but after being there for 60 mins I esd ready to get back to my special tranquil space. There are better in its class. Given the aplomb and grace of the greeting we received upon check-in, combined with a relatively genteel atmosphere, we were wholly unprepared for the series of inconveniences, annoyances and disappointments which followed. Check-in time? Room not ready. Room preparation? As discovered the following morning, incomplete (no answer on first call to front desk for correction). Spa? Upon check-in, we requested massage times and were told we would be contacted with availability. When no one called by next morning, I called the front desk (again, no answer on first call), only to discover they seemed utterly unaware of our request. When they did finally contact us, we were told that only one "technician" was on duty that day, meaning massages would have to be sequential rather than simultaneous. Pass. Restaurant? At dinner, despite a somewhat limited menu, food was competently prepared and served, providing a pleasant experience. Breakfast, however, was a different matter. Faced with another limited and uninspiring (photocopied) menu, I ordered the one attractive item, only to later discover it was unavailable. Service was sluggish, and eggs cooled while the condiments requested were not forthcoming. (If you order the avocado toast, be prepared to pick avocado peel from your teeth. Lots of it.) We ate outside, where the ambiance of the nearby dirty, water-filled metal ashtray was apparently no-charge. Food is available only during limited meal hours, including from room service. Don't count on having a Bloody Mary or Mimosa on the lovely patio or chairs overlooking the lake before 2 PM, however, since the bar is closed. Suitably rebuffed, we went to the Lakeside Dining Room, where we were told such services were available. But at the outdoor patio, the fact that only two tables had umbrellas (four without) meant that we could either dine in the heat of direct sunlight or go indoors. We chose not to endure the heat. (Bright spot: The server named "Alex" who did her best to compensate for the deficiencies we encountered.) Given the (to put it mildly) "luxury" room rate, we were surprised to find that fees for all services were "a la carte," from canoes ($15-$20, depending) right down to the exercise room and pool (each $15 per person per day). The Gestalt theory of perception holds that a whole experience is more than merely the sum of its parts. The Greystone Inn, by contrast, is exactly the opposite: The hotel claims to be more than it provides. And although at least some of it is competently delivered, you will find yourself asking, "Is that all there is?" Alternatives: If you are in the market for a historic hotel in the mountains of western North Carolina, I suggest Old Edwards Inn and Spa in Highlands, with its last-century grace and truly gourmet restaurant. If you are looking for the ambience of a turn-of-the-last-century lakefront resort, I suggest the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, New York. It isn't so much that the Greystone Inn is bad; it's just that in its class, there are better. read more

On New Years Day we ventured to the course so the guys could play a round of nine while the gals enjoyed the view from the Greystone Inn. They have been doing that routine for years but it was my firs trip. The inn has a wonderfully rich and storied history, and as you walk around the property you can almost sense the decades of other patrons who came before you. The inn itself is just lovely, with lots of cozy nooks where guests can snuggle in and relax, and there isn't a bad view from any part of the building(s). There was a staffing change right in the middle of our bar tab, which was unfortunate because the gentleman we started with (a homebrewer who collaborates with and consults for some of Asheville-area breweries) was a lot more entertaining than the poor girl we ended with, who had been up all night working the NYE scene. Honestly, they shouldn't have staffed her again just a few hours later, it's not professional to run people into the ground and still expect them to perform in the same manner as they normally would, but I digress. We thoroughly enjoyed our caramel apple martinis, and when the guys joined us there were more drinks, along with some debate about whether and what we should order to eat. Unfortunately, the menu was severely lacking in substance, despite the disproportionately high price tags, so we opted out. This is not a place you'd seek out for a culinary experience, let's just put it that way, but if you're in for the weekend and don't want to leave the property, you'd really have it all to yourself. My family and I ordered take out from the restaurant in the Inn and picked it up. We ordered 2 pizzas which were tiny personal size( that's the only size they offer) . They charge $14 per pizza which only had 4 small slices ! It didn't even taste that great. We also ordered 2 burgers which were mediocre tasting and they put the buns on wrong side up on both burgers! Our total bill for this unsatisfactory meal was $50! We were very disappointed and feel for the prices they were charging it should've been excellent tasting! We will never eat there again. read more

I have mixed feelings about our three night stay. The area is beautiful and it's clear the new owners have worked hard on the renovation. But for $360+ a night, everything should be perfect, and that was not the case. The staff was uneven; the folks brought in from their other resort were fantastic. The local staff were often rude or just oddly unhelpful. The food was ok, serviceable but not great for the price. There was a huge wedding party while we were there. Thus the formal restaurant which requires a jacket was overrun with kids throwing bread and running around. On one day we couldn't sit on the main patio because of the wedding. Our wine glasses in the room weren't washed, just turned upside down. There was chocolate ground into a yellow chair, and someone else's M&Ms under the side table all three nights; no wash cloths, and a patio door that stuck. For $250 a night I wouldn't care at all, but for this price the details matter. I left these comments when I checked out but got no response; if I had, I wouldn't have posted, because I recognize they are trying to get a business up and running. It's probably also helpful to know that you really have to drive a lot if you want to hike or see a town. This resort really relies on guests using the adjacent country club, and the folks there were not exactly welcoming. The spa was nice and the massage was great, as was the sauna. All in all, I would probably choose Grove Park Inn in Asheville next time, as price is comparable but seems more likely to have consistent service. I was a little disappointed. read more

This review is just about the food. I have never stayed at the Inn--only dined there. The food is a disappointment. It is heavy, expensive and funky. I had a chicken wrap wrapped in seaweed. The combination did not work, It was the size of an appetizer but the price of a "main" and bland. The kale soup sounded great but it had a strange consistency and was more of a stew. You would expect more farm to table lighter fare, but this chef is heavy handed. The prices are high to boot. The food needs attention IMHO (as well as the Lakeside dining decor--which is tired) so it meets the standards of the rest of the Inn. I gave it 4 stars for location and service, but certainly not for food cost or portions. read more

Greystone Inn (described as a "boutique hotel")is a beautiful historic inn, recently renovated. Our room was lovely and very comfortable. The inn has a few very comfortable and cozy living rooms with fireplaces where one can visit and relax. It also has a small bar with a half dozen tables, where one can enjoy cocktails and has a very simple menu. For more formal dining, there is the Lakeside Dining Room. It's a lovely dining room overlooking the lake. The food was generally very good. For breakfast the first day, the oatmeal made with almond milk was very good. However the scrambled eggs were awful. Couldn't eat them. Second day breakfast was wonderful! For dinner, I had the chicken breast with polenta, very good. My husband had the beef fillet with gnocchi. It was seasoned well. However, it was cold when it arrived to the table. The wonton appetizer was to be filled with corn and shrimp. Couldn't see any signs of the filling. The manager (Dolly) was very attentive and took the appetizer off our bill, as well as not charging us for our second round of cocktails. read more

The room was filthy (including a glob of someone else's hair on the sofa, someone else's trash in the drawers, and very dirty carpet); there were bugs, both dead and alive joining us in our room; there is no readily-available work-out facility; and the "walk" to our room was 50+ uneven stone steps, uncovered, up and down the hill. This fact should have been disclosed at the time of booking. Our door was left unlocked by the staff as well. We would never send any friend here. read more

This is one of my very favorite places to stay!  The inn and grounds are magically beautiful--we have visited many times, and it just gets better and better! The landscaping is wonderful--gorgeous flowers, perfect combination of manicured and not, and watching the white-clad croquet players is like watching a movie set.  The rooms are beautiful, the lake is wonderful, the food delicious--breakfast out on the stone terrace overlooking the lake is my happy place!  The lobby/bar/study area in the main building are truly spectacular, and the Presidential Suite is fabulous!  Only one downside is that the pool is not included--I would love to see a reciprocal arrangement between the pool (separately owned) and the inn whereby each guest a the inn gets one free pass to use the pool during their stay--as is, it feels a bit odd.  Housekeeping while we were there was also a bit erratic, but I assume that was because of Covid, because it has been fabulous every other time we've been.  But you forget about all of that when aboard the complimentary Miss Lucy sunset boat ride on the beautiful wooden boat--so special!  And the food in the main restaurant was outstanding!  The staff are lovely and welcoming--we especially loved Stratton--adorable!  Morning coffee off of the lobby and a seltzer-water dispenser were both really nice touches, as are the gifts at check-out.  Nearby hikes to waterfalls--different ones for all ability levels--were ALL amazing!!  Fishing off the pier, renting a pontoon boat for the day, visiting in the white Adirondack chairs on the lawn...it was all sublime.  And inner tubing down the river nearby was fun, too.  We will definitely be back--our entire family LOVES it here!  Bravo!! read more
