The parking could use some better signage. The food service went smoothly. Utilizing two lines is great. They squeezed far too many people in the room. Very claustrophobic. The bridal party table is located in front of the bathrooms. Rather awkward location. The sound system is AWFUL. If you want people to listen to you, they need to be able to hear you. The EMCEE needs to reduce the amount of corny jokes. We are here for the bride and groom, not you...sorry, not sorry. The plastic bags on the lights on the patio are super tacky. The use of real linens is very nice but I wish that had included linen napkins too (perhaps a client choice?)

We had the entire venue to ourselves, and were given permission to "make it our home." The event planning portion of our stay could not have been easier. JoAnn was professional and made us really feel like we were in good hands. All our worries were put to rest and she had answers for all of our questions. We are in no doubt that no matter what happens, our day will go off without a hitch. The wedding venue is all inclusive and priced VERY competitively. It is so nice to be able to just make 4 payments and show up on our wedding day knowing that everything from the DJ to the decorating is done.

Can't speak to breakfast or dinner (didn't like the menus) but we had lunch here one day. First impression: the place smells very musty. It is dark. Guess they're trying for a 'colonial inn' atmosphere. The furniture is about 50% mismatched antiques. They wax everything, often. Tables, chairs and everything are sticky. LONG wait for a server. Long wait for beverages. LONG wait for every course of the meal. When errors occur and they occur frequently, servers are very apologetic. But then, there is a long wait for the correction to be made. Every dish our group ordered tasted like frozen food. The "Fresh Fried Catfish" was neither fresh or catfish. It was frozen fillets of the Thailand/Viet Nam species sold in bulk at Sam's Club. Tasted like "mud." When our almost untouched dinner plates were bussed, no comment or questions were asked. When the server suggested desserts after another LONG WAIT she asked "How was everything?" We told her we didn't swallow a bite of the entres. She looked down and whined/groaned at the comment and said "We're sorry about that. I'll be right back with your check... " (LONG WAIT...) When we were asked "How was everything?" on the way out, we replied, "We only ate the salads. Everything else was horrible." NO EFFORT was made to accommodate us.. Guess we are "ONLY tourists," and as such it was "Good enough for tourists." We were just happy to be gone from this tourist trap. The rest of the day our clothes smelled like furniture polish. =Insult added to injury.

Parking: One-way trail after you hit a certain point on the property. Easy to navigate. Plenty of parking in the accommodation area. Service: Matthew and Hiram follow strict COVID-19 protocol here. Guests must wear masks around the property and maintain the 6-feet social distancing. They do not enter booked rooms 2 days before and after the guest's stay. Guests must go to the front desk to get service (extra toiletries, towels, etc.), as there is no maid service currently. No complaints about the service. WIFI: It's non-existent, even though there is "free" WIFI. Connection was not great. Some cellular service may come through, but it was nice to escape from the tech world. Location: Perfect! It's about a 15-20 minutes drive into downtown Highlands. Great distance away from great hikes and views. They have an easy trail throughout the property here, if you do not want to leave Fire Mountain. Massage 1-hour (3/5): Very nice lad but wasn't the best I've had. Great view when you enter though. Clean, high windows that will let the blazing sun through, so it can get a bit hot. The lady followed COVID-19 protocol. Fire & Water Restaurant Dinner (3/5): 1. Watermelon Gazpacho (2/5): It was refreshing with the watermelon. However, the flavor was lacking for me. Bland overall. 2. Cornmeal Crusted Trout (4/5): I cleaned most of this plate. Trout was crusted perfectly without too much cornmeal. Carrots with the sweet glaze were a nice touch. The other 2 veggies were OK. 3. Peach Cobbler (3/5): I'm not a big fan of cobbler. This was just OK for me. Matthew and Hiram are genuine and knowledgeable. They do try to keep up with this place. Matthew is a great cook, as he changes the breakfast and dinner menu up here and there. Would I come back? Yes. Only thing is the restroom.... the space is kind of cramped in our room, especially the shower. I did not like that.

I was greeted by Mathew and their adorable dog Lily, given a tour of the grounds, and handed maps of local hikes, waterfalls, and excellent places to eat in the nearby town of Highlands. The inn itself is thoughtfully decorated, a combination of rustic and posh which is typically a difficult balance to strike. And yet, they've achieved it with aplomb. I stayed in the Nantahala room at the Inn, drawn to the extra-large soaking tub that I used numerous times. I never expect these large tubs to fill adequately, and yet there was plentiful hot water to soak my cares away. The first thing you notice about Fire Mountain is the lack of modern distractions. There are no televisions and no radios. I had about two bars of LTE (Verizon) that kicked in right as I drove up the hill, allowing me to text my partner upon my arrival and feel like I could be "connected" if I chose to. The Inn also has guest WiFi which allowed me to do basic internet stuff as I pleased. It probably wouldn't support any streaming service... then again, why anyone would want to watch Netflix up here is beyond me! The other thing you notice is the air, which is a few degrees cooler than the nearby town of Dillard down the mountain (and a proper 10+ degrees cooler than the Devil's Doorstep I came from!). The humidity is low, even in mid-July. For this reason, Fire Mountain does not have air conditioning and doesn't need it. Despite being a lifelong Southerner, I'm quite sensitive to heat, but the temperature was comfortable my entire trip. Following Mathew's recommendation, I closed up my room in the morning and opened it back up mid-afternoon, leaving it open all night so I could rest peacefully serenaded by the crickets and tree frogs. I'm no stranger to this area, so the eight or nine mile drive into town was nothing to me. In fact, the winding mountain roads, two scenic overlooks, and abundant rhododendrons made each trip delightful. Hiram and Mathew's recommendations for food, shopping, and sights helped me reconnect with the Highlands region in blissful ways. Breakfast at Fire Mountain is substantial. Each breakfast started with a plate of fresh fruit. Mathew additionally provided boxed lunches for me, perfect for carrying up a mountain or down one of the area's many waterfall trails. I only wish I could have enjoyed dinner at the Inn, which was unfortunately not available during my stay. Such is life; I'll just have to return another time! I'm running out of space, so I'll just say that Fire Mountain was a 10/10 recommend from me. I can't wait to return!

My daughters and I went for a fun girl's weekend, and we now plan to return every year! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that made us feel right at home. We have several food allergies in our family and Dave and Brigette made us feel unburdensome! They made (from scratch) gluten-free peach bread and Dutch babies, along with eggs, sausage, and fresh fruit. Dave and Brigette went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable. They recommended the best local attractions and shared many friendly conversations. Their genuine care for guests shined through. We are planning to return each year as a new family tradition.

(We'd never been to this area of NC so didn't quite know what to expect.) This place is directly off the main drag, and is run by a husband and wife with a small team to assist. Julie (the owner) was as sweet as pie, and each morning greeted us in the dining area, offering to prepare our bacon and eggs in any style. This was probably the best aspect of our stay. She was happy to talk with us endlessly, and quick to make an outline of all thing things we could do during our stay. The continental breakfast area was always available for guest use, we really loved that; we played hours of Uno there of an evening. The rooms, while small, are efficient and most importantly of all--*so* clean. We stayed in one of the "round house" buildings (I think there are only 2?) on the second level. Our deck was shared by the neighboring room, with whom we enjoyed chatting one evening on said deck. Our room was equipped with a mini-fridge. Soaps, towels, toilet paper, and everything you would expect in a standard hotel were provided. The walls are thin enough to hear our neighbors, however everyone seemed to be respectful, so it didn't bother us too much (there was a cute barky dog next to us, but her cuteness exceeded her barkiness). A note about the rooms being small - there are common spaces all around the property aplenty. So the room size didn't matter too much to us because our time spent there was basically for sleeping / showering. The main building, as already mentioned, has a great room / parlor area with fireplace for hanging out. There are chairs on the front porch, and even an outdoor firepit with a view of the neighboring mountain ridge (which we did not use). The size of the room was outdone by all of these added amenities, and there felt like a sense of community there. Do not let room size deter you from a stay. The property is close enough to the main road that you can hear traffic, but the noise was tolerable, and it was not constant. This did not bother us, and would not deter us from another stay here, ever. I fail to understand any review which is four stars or less, people will complain about everything. The accommodations were priced just right ... we stayed in high-season (July) and were quite pleased by what we paid. The Brook Trout Inn exceeded our expectations in every way. Go hike Gorges State Park! Then go to Whitewater Falls, during your stay!
