We had a good range of dishes, but I especially loved the roast duck, as well as the crispy prawns, which was really nice. The dumplings were all excellent, and the oysters both natural and tempura also excellent. The pork hock was not quite what I expected but was very tasty, the roast pork belly also very very good. I wish we had ordered some bang bang chicken salad or papaya salad to perhaps lighten all the heavy proteins we had ordered. We did get the Broccolini as a side and that was superb. Service was very professional, and competent. Despite a fair number of orders for a table of five, everything went smoothly. Even when we tacked on additional orders halfway through the meal, that was no trouble. The decor felt like Los Angeles Chinatown! Loved the big red lanterns up high, and neon lights in various spots. We will be back. We will try to be more adventurous, and the only thing we would like to see is perhaps a few more fish dishes.

The server took our order as soon as we snapped our menus shut and brought us drinks super quickly. I ordered the veggie ramen, after asking if it was vegan and the server saying he "thinks so." Hoping that meant yes. He did tell me the noodles were made out of wheat, which added another tally to my list of people in New Zealand who think vegan is the same as gluten free (I LOVE BREAD, PEOPLE!!). The ramen came out very quickly as well and holy SH*T IT IS AMAZING. The broth is rich and slightly spicy and so flavourful, the noodles were cooked to perfection and squishy and hearty, and the combination of cabbage, seaweed, and whatever that other green veg was made it just over the top incredible. I ate my ramen before I even finished my drink, which really says something. By the time we left, bellies full and sloshing, I had ramen juice all over my white dress and a huge, fat kid smile plastered on my face. The total for my partner and I's meals came to $50, which is absurdly cheap in Auckland. Cheers to that!! Ps my partner had a seafood ramen and loved his as well.

A few of us arrived early and were ravenous so ordered some edamame (spicy) and takoyaki to start. The edamame came in a large brown paper bar covered in spice. A cool idea, but ours were overcooked and in need of a good sprinkling of salt. The takoyaki on the other hand, came with a generous garnish of dancing bonita flakes and were light and crispy - delicious! On the recommendation of the waiter I ordered miso ramen for my main and a karaage chicken to share. It was way too much food but if there's fried chicken involved, I've got to try it. Back to the ramen, the flavour was more refined that others I've tried but still really well balanced and meaty. The noodles were perfectly cooked but I have to agree with Milly H, it was missing a few garnishes that I've come to expect. The Karaage was, in my mind, perfect. Light & crunchy on the outside, perfectly cooked, moist chicken on the inside - highly recommend. The service was friendly albeit a bit patchy. It seems like they don't have sections and because about half the seating is upstairs you have to grab a waiter while you can before they disappear below. There were lot's of loud "excuse me" 's from different table trying to get the waiter's attention. Zool Zool have only just opened and are probably still trying to iron out some kinks. I plan of heading back there when the weather cools down. There's no outdoor seating and ramen + AKL humidity is not my favourite combo.

The outside area is speckled with fairy lights, making for a very attractive invitation to any passersby. The live music was just amazing, as those who were performing had oodles of talent! I had some potato cubes with dips, which were pricey, but nice. It reminded me a lot of Northern Steamship on Quay St, but with loads more space to breathe. Definitely recommended! :)

On other occasions I've been here in big groups and I think that's where the Neighbourhood comes into its own. It is loud and raucous and sadly (or not, depending on your POV) something of a pick-up joint as the night rolls on. There is a DJ, even on Saturday afternoon but the sound selection on this latest visit seemed a bit random with no real mood or theme. I guess for me the Neighbourhood sums up the best and worst elements of Auckland bars. Looks good, slick service, nice products but really just a bit too cool for its own self. The patrons range greatly in age and urban tribal affiliation but be prepared to have every pair of eyes size you up as you walk in through the front courtyard. Why people? Are your companions that boring? I'm not really into the see and be-seen scene but I do like the feel of this place in summertime - it is literally cool which is of course a good thing. I'm just not that keen on the other patrons.

Tuesday was a different story and the place is packed on Thursdays. Pigeons wander in the door looking for peanuts (a good sign, as far as I can see) and the locals wander in and out. The bar staff were more focused on their regulars - as it should be - but I felt welcome and recognized. Definitely a good stop for a drink and to hear the local conversation. A small menu is offered with pizza and some other bar food, but not really a place to eat. The Elbow Room has a vibe that fits the name and my expectations for a locals bar.

The decor matches this homely intimate vibe, with heavy drape curtains and subtle lighting emphasising the cosy atmosphere of the bar. Serving a variety of wines, beers and spirits - you can purchase any drink you fancy at The Elbow Room, including delicious cocktails. An array of bar snacks is also on hand, and I was ecstatic to find Peroni, one of my favourite beers, is now available on tap at The Elbow Room! Tip: Not so good for dancing due to its small size!

Just the other day, a friend and I were talking about the lack of cosy wine bars in Auckland. You know the kind with big, leather chairs, a roaring fire and a well-thought out wine list. Enter The Corner Store. It's more a cocktail bar than a wine bar but it ticks the roaring fire box. There's also a sneaky internal courtyard that's blissfully quiet mid-week! Hungry? Try their small but delicious tapas menu. Beautifully tender pork belly and damn near perfect fries!
