We stayed here for a few days and was a good experience. Bob at concierge was super friendly and helpful. Room was clean and spacious and king bed was very comfortable. We had a balcony for no extra charge which gave great view of the mountains. They have a bar downstairs with Sherrie mixing excellent cosmos. The big dining area named The Maple Room was open for breakfast and dinner. Chef Randy cooks wonderfully and his BBQ menu is highly recommended.. My wife had the scallops & they were outstanding. I've never stayed here, but I'm sure it's beautiful. I have however tried to eat here. We entered the dining room and every table was eating breakfast, just what I wanted. We were seated promptly and given menus, lunch menus. But we really wanted breakfast. We had been on the road and looked for places to eat on the web. This place looked nice and the menu looked inviting. But the invitation ends at 11:30, not stated on the website. We were told at 11:45 that we could not have breakfast. Although the table next to us was just served theirs. Did the eggs jump back into the chickens? So denied breakfast, I felt like Michael Douglas in Falling Down. Like I said, I've never stayed here and probably won't. read more

Have dined at the restaurant 4-5 times over the last 2 years. The food is usually pretty good, but the service is ALWAYS sub-par at best. The servers seem to fawn over a few guests while completely ignoring others. We went there this evening for the fish fry. There were only a few other patrons there. We took our seats among the many open tables. After about 10 min, one of the servers asked "Did you have a reservation?" I replied that we did not, she responded that "Two people had a reservation for 5:00pm, and we are kind on waiting on them". As it was 5:30, I responded "Well, we are here." After about 10 more minutes, a different server came to take our order, we both ordered the fish fry. The fried haddock was good, but the fries were seriously under cooked, almost raw. I would have sent them back, but our server never returned, despite there being only a few other customers. Eventually, a busser came and asked if she could take our plates, I told her that she could, and the fries were seriously under cooked. She said "oh" and just took the plates and never returned. 15 minutes later our server asked from a few tables away if we wanted anything else. I just asked for the check. It's a shame that such a nice facility has such poor service. We are now local and there are not many restaurants in the area, we will not be returning or recommending Hancock House to the many visitors to the area. read more

I don't like leaving a not-so-good review after a single visit but it's my only time in Hancock. Please note that this covers the restaurant only, not the hotel; and note that they were short staffed. The place is charming and looks like comfortable hotel. The restaurant was closed for some reason, but the server said they serve the same menu at the bar. That was fine with us, as the bar was spacious and reasonably quiet, with comfortable booths. We were in no rush. Good thing, because service was very slow. The server explained she was handling the place alone. She also explained it was the chef's first day back after a long absence. The food was OK. Average diner quality. Nothing horrible or spoiled but nothing memorable either. I had the pot roast and baked potato. The roast was tender and flavorful but the gravy was the same standard gravy served on everything. Not awful but seemed like a purchased gravy, not house made, and rather salty. Steamed broccoli was made from fresh. It was properly cooked but lukewarm. Salad came late; and this was after waiting what must have been 20 minutes for the food. Our glasses were empty and we had to ask for water. Server was apologetic. I suspect the service is usually better but the food is just ok. read more

Very nice place. Like having a Marriott in town. We have a summer place nearby and came to check it in the winter. We stayed at the Hancock House and it was lovely. Very nice restaurant for dinner, comfortable room and excellent mattress (better than I'd expected) and a great breakfast included. Good free WiFi and a charming place overall. The neighborhood is in decay. The room had a shower curtain bar in disrepair that allowed water to fall to the bathroom floor. I requested repair and nothing happened. I asked for a 2nd roll of toilet paper, again nothing. Breakfast was lacking in both quality of ingredients and presentation Went to the bar for a drink during the afternoon. We stayed here as regular guests a few days before our wedding weekend as we settled in Hancock. The free breakfast was great and dinner at the Maple Room was solid too. I wouldn't say the food is a 5-star cuisine, but given the small town, having a warm meal prepared just downstairs is crucial. The rooms were also as described and perfectly comfortable. The WiFi is a little weak, but having WiFi at all in the area was great. On top of that, the staff was always ready to help with a smile on their face. Lynn and Rosie in particular are amazing! About a third of our guests also stayed at the Hancock House during the weekend and they all said their stay was wonderful. This is a solid place for your guests to stay for the weekend, especially if they're looking for just 1 night. read more

Sadly I won't be back. I've been staying at the Hancock House once a month while on business. It's has been a decent place to stay, nice to have a restaurant on site and the free breakfast was good. But, the last few times the room was not that well cleaned (trash still in the bathroom garbage and some other minor things). Also, no coffee for hotel guests in the lobby - really kind of odd and inconvenient. The rate went up when Spring came around ok, I get it. I stayed the other night, go to the room and see the nightstand was pulled out as if it was going to be cleaned behind, but it wasn't - there was a dirty plastic fork on the stand and a dirty cup on the floor behind it. I picked them up and threw them out. Next morning I went down for breakfast and the waitress said "oh, did they tell you there is no more free breakfast for hotel guests"? I said no, they did not. Not at check in or when I called to make the reservation. Needless to say very disappointing. read more

We enjoyed our stay. The room was HUGE. Had every amenity we could think of. The staff is pleasant. The hotel is quirky to say the least. Written instructions on how to use the door knobs and closets. OK. Im sure there is a reason why they needed to have written notes every wear. Breakfast was delicious. The staff does NOT wear masks or they have them on covering their chin. The ADA room on the second floor, the shower does not drain and fills with water (yuck). We've stayed here in the past and I feel safe in saying the place has really gone down hill, no where as nice as it once was. read more

Stay at the hotel but do not eat at the restaurant... and here's why: There aren't many hotels in the area and this place was recently remodeled at the time of my visit. Therefore the accommodations were clean and comfortable, mostly. This place is considerably better than anything else within a reasonable distance. We decided to have dinner at the restaurant, right downstairs. I ordered prime rib, rare. When ordering, I specifically asked if it could be prepared to my specification because I do not enjoy eating well done meat and will not eat anything above medium-rare. I always ask this because I have no problem ordering something else. The waitress told me that my prime rib would be prepared to temp. Don't you know it came out well past WELL DONE and looking like dog food. I politely pointed out that the prime rib was not rare at all and asked again if rare was a possibility. She left with the plate and then returned with the plate. She told me that the chef said I needed to cut into the meat to determine the temperature. IT WAS PRIME RIB! For those of you who don't know anything about meat (including the chef at this place), prime rib is not grilled like a steak. It is slow roasted and then sliced to order. Therefore, the temperature of the meat is consistent throughout. Anyway, I will not be back anytime soon to be served dog food by an incompetent chef. I realize that this place is in the middle of nowhere where people don't have the good sense to have standards. If you are a local, I'm sure this place is satisfactory. If you have ever been to a restaurant in any major city, you will not be impressed by the lack of hospitality and competence found here. However, this visit was years ago and it is possible that conditions have since improved. read more

It is hard to rate this hotel and its restaurants because for this part on the country - (upstate Catskills ny) this place would have to be rated 5 star. That being said when i pay over $150.00 per night i expect to be pampered. The room is comfortable enough but lacks the extra touches. The food is a step above cafeteria food. For that reason i ordered the chicken and eggplant parm combo over spegetti. You cant do to much to ruin that. One thing i have to say is the portions are huge! The watress was very nice too. The only other place on my way to my destination is a days inn in liberty ny. Same price for the room -- comparably i would rather stay here! Come and stay but remember where you are and be grateful that there is a nice place to stay on the way to where you are going. Right off route 17 (the future i 86) convenient and friendly . Whether you're looking for drinks, dinner or a room, there are other options in Hancock worth trying first. Capra Inn is one that seems to have good ratings but do your research. I'm in the hotel in a suite as I write this. While the suite is clean and roomy, there are several issues with Hancock House worth considering before coming here: 1. Service is poor. While checking in, the front desk receptionist took calls making guests wait to complete their check in. Once in the room, we couldn't get wi-fi going. We followed the instructions to the letter and made two trips to the lobby. They told us you have to add the floor number (i.e. 2 or 3) to the wi-fi password. After an hour of screwing around with it, they called to tell us we don't have to add the number after all. Ugh. Along the way, I found myself in the kitchen with the hotel receptionist who went to ask the cook how the hotel wifi worked. He looked at her and me and said he was too busy. 2. They do not accept American Express. They are so against AMEX here that they actually give you the names and phone numbers of their competitors if you insist on paying with AMEX. I realize that AMEX charges establishments at a higher rate than Visa and MC but it would seem to me that as a business owner I'd rather pay a little more for customers who want to use AMEX than get no revenue at all. And with high customer acquisition costs, it's insane to send customers to my competitor when I will likely never get them back. Telling. 3. The staff complains about the owners. When I asked about a policy, like not accepting AMEX, I was told that that was the owner's decision and there was nothing the staff could do about it. Awkward. 4. Bar has zero ambiance. Might as well be plywood and wood benches. Service isn't great. 5. The ice machines are broken and you have to go to the bar. I love how the operator pretends like they're not sure if the ice machine has been fixed yet. Right. 6. Don't come for the free wifi. We're in a premium suite, which is at the end of the hall. The wifi repeater must be in the middle of the floor, so our signal strength is virtually non-existent. Wouldn't it make sense to ensure that the customers who are spending the most have the best service? In my opinion, for being in the middle of upstate New York, and given the sub-par quality of service, I think the Hancock House is a pricey establishment for the value received. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a road trip. The restaurant was fairly busy for a late lunch, but service was prompt and polite. Water were served quickly, and food came hot. The fish sandwich special was fine and the burger looked good, with the only downside at that point being the melted squares of cheese clearly came straight from a pre-sliced processed pack. The side salad was fresh and ample. The macaroni salad was room temperature rather than cold. Unfortunately, the Chicken BLT came half raw - the marinated boneless chicken was uncooked in the center. They offered to replace it, but at that point, our appetite was lost. It was taken off the bill only after the somewhat confused/uncertain waitress spoke to the cook to resolve the situation. When the bill came I saw that the Chicken BLT was taken off the bill however the burger, which was ordered off their children's menu for our eight year old was there at their full menu price. When I brought this up to the waitress she said (almost defensively because at this point I was a bit politely annoyed) that we didn't specify that it was a children's burger that we wanted. However she insisted on shaking this velvet bag in front of my face to pick out a game piece for a drawing that they were holding for some giveaway. I explained that I wasn't interested in the giveaway and instead asked for her to get the manager for me. About four or five minutes later a woman came over and asked what the problem was. I asked her if she had been informed what the problem was and honestly she really hadn't been properly informed. With all due respect - these two women could have been two of Christian Bale's Sister's from the movie The Fighter.....At this point it just felt very uncomfortable. At that point I just paid my bill and got the hell out of there hoping that a couple of ingested pieces of uncooked chicken wouldn't make me ill. My advice is to avoid this place. read more

After having stayed at hotels all over the world, I have to say the Hancock House is one of the most welcoming. We were driven off the highway Ina blizzard one January night last year and pulled off at the next exit. Close to midnight , the desk clerk welcomed us, she made sure we got warm and dry, then offered us the stranded travelers rate. Not only did we get a comfortable room with a balcony overlooking a beautiful small town decorated for Christmas, we also were sent off with a complimentary breakfast . We are now at the Hanover House for the second time and find them more than gracious and accommodating. By the way, we ate at the restaurant and I got the prime rib and it was perfect. So I really like the hotel and the restaurant. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights while attending a wedding in the area. The hotel was generally pretty nice and we were happy with it. Our room was fairly large and we had a balcony overlooking the Main Street through town, which was nice. One thing I have to say though is that I found the room dark. Even if you turned on all the lights, it was still fairly dark in the room. Other than that, the room came with a free breakfast in one of two restaurants downstairs. The breakfast was nicer than most hotel breakfasts; instead of a simple buffet, it's a full sit-down restaurant. You order something off the menu and they bring it to you. This takes a while, so maybe not the bedroom for those in a hurry, but the quality is better than what I'm used to for hotel breakfasts. I had the French toast and enjoyed it. We also had lunch one day at the other restaurant which was also a bar. The food there was good but slow. Overall, we were happy with the hotel. It had a kind of simple charm to it, which was nice, something you wouldn't find at a chain hotel. I do have one complaint though (other than the dark room thing): it was on the expensive side. A room on a weekend in late September was around $160/night. For that much, I expect a room firmly in 3 star range in terms of quality, but I'd rate this place more of a 2 star hotel. So your value for your money isn't good, but in tiny Hancock, NY, you don't really have any other options. I know there are other hotels in town, but I believe they're more. If I needed a place to stay in Hancock again, I would stay here, but honestly, I'd probably look at neighboring towns first. read more

Good for this area of town. Friendly staff and quiet rooms. The only thing I would change is the beds (a little stiff and uncomfortable). We ARE in the middle of no where, so I can't complain too much. We enjoyed our stay and felt rested towards the end. So many things to say, but the most telling is the attitude of the staff (when they are actually at the front desk). Very unfriendly, not very helpful and when there's a problem they accuse you of lying. We had no hot water in our kitchen (which we paid extra for) and tepid water at best in the bathroom for the first two days of three day stay over new year. Rather than write a play by play, I'll sum up by saying we were told by employee Emily, that they were aware of the problem and that a plumber was called. We were also told that it was very cold outside and they can't do anything about mother nature (winter is often cold). In the end the owners Russell and Lynn Bass never replied to emails, they (through a staff member) told me my claims were unfounded and to essentially go away. So I will take their advice and you should too. There is really no good reason to stay here. There are other places. Hancock is lovely, but the Hancock House...not so much. Do yourself a favor and make other arrangements. read more

I stayed at this hotel this past weekend. I would not stay here again because they do not seem to care about their guests. If you end up, as I did, on the 2nd floor, then you will be sleeping right above the bar and restaurant. The walls are paper thin and you can hear complete conversations beneath you. The staff assured me that the bar would be closed by 10pm. As I had to get-up at 6:00am for a fishing trip, I figured that was ok. But 11pm came around and the bar was still hopping. I called down to complain. 11:45p, same thing. At 12:15am, I walked downstairs to beg for quiet. I was kept awake by the party beneath me until 1am. The next day, the person at the front apologized and said the manager or owner would be calling me that day to give me a partial refund for my room. That call never came. read more

I would call the service at the hotel atrocious, but that would imply that any service was provided. We checked into the top-priced suite on a Friday afternoon at 4:30. Upon checking in we asked to have the sofa bed in the living room made up for our daughter who was traveling with us. The front desk person's response was that we would have to make up the bed ourselves as housekeeping was gone for the day . At 4:30 PM? Really? Well, apparently they didn't hurry back, because when we returned from our day's activities on Saturday at 4:00 PM, we discovered that our room had not been cleaned. A call to the front desk revealed - you guessed it - that housekeeping was gone for the day and we would not be able to have our room serviced. In between, the front desk person/operator was unable to make the hotel phone system work to allow me to contact friends in a room down the hall; eventually I had to use my cell phone after being disconnected three times. But wait, there's more. We were told that complimentary breakfast was included in the exorbitant room rate. But we were given only two breakfast passes, despite the fact they there were three people in our party. "Two is all we give out," the surly front desk person told us. But this turned out to be less of a problem than it seemed; our waitress was so slow and disinterested on the first morning that we paid for breakfast elsewhere the next day rather than endure another hour and a half ordeal to get free oatmeal and a bagel. If you need a place to stay, this probably beats camping out, but not by much. read more

My wife and I had dinner at the pub while on a fishing trip this week. We were both starving and definitely over-ordered. I had a grilled cheese and cream of broccoli soup with fried raviolis for an app. My wife had gravy fries, pierogies, and a huge salad. All this greasy goodness for under 40 bucks. Everything was prepared really well and the waitress was very nice albeit a little overwhelmed. I don't think they were expecting a full house on a Monday night. Stopped by to have dinner with my husband and we ordered the french onion soup and a blue burger. The french onion soup tasted as if someone had dumped the sugar bowl in the bowl before adding the broth, the onions were to be nice, very tender and very large pieces. Not much flavor in the broth other than sweet. The main course arrived, my husband had a burger with the bun and an order of fries, the burger was cold, the blue cheese was just sitting on top with no melting in sight and the bacon was crisp but not warm. I order mine with out a bun and that is what I got a cold burger on a bare plate with cold blue cheese and bacon. The waitress was in such a hurry to get back the the other two waitresses, to gossip, that we didn't have a chance to ask for condiments. I had to go find the waitress to see if I could get lettuce and a slice of tomato for my burger. There was no polite conversation from the waitress just a feeling that she wanted to get away from the table as soon as possible. much prefer other eateries in the area will not return anytime soon. read more
