This is a great addition to Edinburgh's pub scene as well as a breath of fresh air for Lothian road. Great beer selection, friendly and helpful staff.The food is pretty good although being a small kitchen there can be issues with timing and delays. Think they have done a pretty good job on the refit from what was a pretty terrible place before. Lothian road is pretty devoid of good places to drink in so this is a great treat. Oh - none of the beer is served in pints but this is a great thing when they are all above average strength. I can get pretty drunk here for £20 which is a lot cheaper than most bars! A little bit plaid shirts and neck beards but what do you expect from a quality beer pub! They also allow dogs which is awesome. read more

I used to go to this when this was uluru, so this was my first time as it now is "the Hanging Bat"! I had a small sip of one of my husband's beers and really liked it. so i'm figuring I'll go back and sample a proper glass! They also do hotdogs too and i heard it was the thing to try so i chose the Alsatian Hot Dog, which has suarkrut and mustard. To avoid the filling going up my nose i turned the sausage round so the filling went in ... all very tasty but I needed more mustard! The mac cheese was nice too but needed something, defo salt and pepper. I will go back and try the pulled pork as it's meant to rock this world! read more

All been said before but hey, I gotta write something! Great (hesitate to use the phrase) 'craft beer pub' with wide range of eclectic 'craft beers'. You can buy in small or large stemmed glasses, the large are around 2/3 of a pint I think and the small must only be a little over 1/3 pint but could be wrong. Anyway the relatively small sized glasses (especially if you pick the small one) means you can try lots of different beers and it seems cheap (£1.50/£1.60 etc) though probably isn't! I tried a lovely smoked porter, a sour beer, I light citrussy IPA that was similar but more refined than Hoegaarden (yes I did just use 'citrussy' and 'refined' in a sentence, I apologise). There's a big chalk board with a large range of beers and full fridges of beers from all over the world that you've never heard of but that all taste interesting and most great. A big MUST for beer lovers. Prepare to have your perceptions and taste buds challenged! Never tried the food so can't comment on that. Staff friendly and let you try a taste of the different beers and can advise etc. Space is quite large and split on to three levels with everything from bar stools at the window to comfy couches. Only slight downside in my opinion is it's location on Lothian road. read more

Great bar with amazing staff and beer selection! My buddy took me to this place while I was visiting Edinburgh for a night. When I first walked in it was very busy. I'm glad I didn't turn around and a leave. I was able to order a beer from a very smart well educated beer guy. He knew so much about beer it was incredible. He offered us tasters and made recommendations on things go try. I was able to score a seat after a short walk around the place and my night continued drinking world class beers with amazing people. Bartender was helpful and knowledgeable about local beers and let me taste a couple to make sure I got one I'd like. Monday night after a particularly tough session at run club, us girls took ourselves off to enjoy a hard earned dinner. Hanging Bat is just across the street from the shop we meet at so it was an easy choice and we grabbed two big sofas for us to sit on right away. A quick look at the menu and we all went up and ordered at the bar- pretty standard review up to hear but now let me explain my new two star rating. As orders began to arrive the food looked good, but as everyone else had their meal mine didn't turn up and when I asked apparently my order had been put in wrong. Ok, not the best but it happens and the waitress came up to sort it out. However where this review lost its first star is when the girl asked me how much I paid and then told me I now owed an additional £1.25 as my order was actually more expensive than what I'd been charged. After a moment of shock, I responded (perhaps a bit harshly) that they had messed up my order and now were asking me to pay more! The waitress stared at me for a brief second before disappearing off to discuss with a manager I assumed. To be fair the guy who had put my original order through wrong came up and apologise and confirmed I wouldn't have to pay more and my food should arrive shortly. The next star got lost when I sat for a further 20 minutes waiting for my food and when going to the bar to ask how much long getting the ride reply from the waitress who'd tried to charge me more that they were making it and the food had to be cooked. Add another 5 minutes on before my food actually arrived and while tasty i had to eat on my own as my friends looked on after they'd long finished their meals. So Hanging Bat falls from my list of places I'd visit. I can accept that errors get made but with the way this was handled I just can't accept bad service. I literally work across the road from this bar and although I've walked passed it on a million occasions, it's actually never been on my radar as a 'go-to' lunch or post works drinks venue...until now! Based on the rave reviews of my fellow Yelpers I decided to pop in here for a quick lunch. Mmmmmn...mac & cheese.... pulled pork in a roll...drool.....(think Homer Simpson style). Although I wouldn't (or couldn't!) eat like this every day, I have to say it totally hit the spot. My lunch buddy loved his Steak sandwich, again with a side of mac & cheese, and the variety of 2/3rd pints of beers on offer. The cost was maybe slightly more than we'd normally spend for a quick mid week work lunch, but did I think it worth it? Was it as speedy as we required? Well, yes. Would I travel especially to come here for food? No... but it's a must try for anyone local who is partial to MEAT and SAUSAGE! oo'er :) I loved the simple decor and the smell of fresh cut wood the minute you open the door. I'm definitely coming back for friday drinks and to try their home-made scotch egg, which as a bar snack sounds very intriguing!! read more

I was a bit suspicious of The Hanging Bat, mostly because whenever folk rave about a place and I end up going it's a bit of a let down. However, this joint must be the exception, because I really enjoyed my beer drinking evening here. There is a wide selection of beer to choose from. My new favourite glass size is the 2/3 pint glass - perfect for a beer fan like me, as a pint size often means my drink is flat by the time I get to the bottom third of the glass... The 2/3 glass is also easier on the wallet as prices reflect the booze quantity. Weird that they didn't have any rose wine available, bit of a let down there. It also gets mega packed, so make sure to get in early of an evening. But all in all, a packed place with a great atmosphere and a good selection of beers on tap. Will be back. read more

Glad we finally got to try this place. Not much to look at on the outside, but a real winner inside. We are big fans of microbrews and specialty beers and the Hanging Bat didnt let us down. Lots of selection of every kind. Even though it isnt specifically a food place, everything we had was great. The menu consists of a few mains and mostly hot dogs and meatloaf burgers with a few vegetarian options. All the food was top quality and very good. The hot dogs buns are amazing and I am dying to try their ribs. Service was also very good. High five to the bartender who delivered our drinks then let me sneakily order a side of collard greens from him when I realized I had forgotten (and I didnt want to get back in line at the bar to order). The only downfall I can see of this place is how busy it gets. We arrived around 5pm on a Friday night and it was nearly full. A half an hour later and there wasnt any seating available. There is definitely a strong after-work crowd. The crowd thinned out a bit later (after about 9pm), but the place is busy and you need to get there early to get a table. Otherwise you can stand around at the bar (which also gets very busy with lots of people waiting for drinks). The business doesnt stop me from thinking this will be one of our new favorite places. read more

I visited this bar for the first time recently and sure now, it will be one of many. Lothian Road is in need of good bars so this fits in nicely. Seating is over a few levels, so there is plenty of space - much more than you think there might be when you first walk in. Lots of wooden furniture and comfy sofas too. There is a wide selection of drinks, including special ales and beers on a blackboard above the bar on tap. There is also some beer brewing in a little side room off the bar that you can have a sneaky peek at. They have really paid attention to details too, with the taps in the sink being like beer valves, which is cool. I didn't get a chance to sample any of the food this time but it looked great and the bar had a great atmosphere too. It's also dog friendly. read more

Great bar, maybe a bit too far off the regular rout to make it a regular, but still a great place to go to. Seems a lot more friendly and easy-going compared to your regular pub, and reminded me of some of the places my and my fiance visited when we toured northern Europe. Great style and a solid sense of humor tied in with the decor details, and above all haggis jerky and a great selection of beers, mixture that you have to struggle to beat. read more

Oooh, there's something very tempting about the sign at The Hanging Bat. Although Lothian Road has improved over the years, I still wouldn't say it's at the stage of being a fine vintage, a la places in the Old Town that I think have definitely got better with age (Bar Kohl, looking right at you in your vodka-flavoured wisdom). So, I think I always find it hard to truly believe that an establishment on Lothian Road is genuinely going to be a must-repeat-visit, but I reckon that's going to change, and The Hanging Bat has certainly got the flame of initial attraction burning (not like moths to a flame, they're just not cool...like bats flying towards a perfectly-temperatured cave). Yes, that's what it was like the day I was lured into the Bat by its jazzy signage. I do frequently judge a bar by its choice of outward attire, because I'm shallow like that, so an 'I' represented by a bat tickled my fancy, and in I went. But enough of why I like signs, no one cares about that. Let's talk about some things that make The Hanging Bat a pretty awesome bar option if you're wandering down Lothian Road and searching for alcohol-based refreshment... - The beer. There are a lot, and they are varied, and what's great is that when someone like me, who's trying in vain to describe what beer characteristics they like but failing massively, approaches the bar and stands there for a long time being indecisive, the bar staff are patient, and informative, and don't roll their eyes, and then you end up with a beer you actually like and will keep drinking rather than some overly hoppy (not my thing) concoction that just ends up getting warm and eventually discarded... - The hot dogs. Now this was a banterful surprise. I'm not really partial to hot dogs under normal circumstances, but the menu looked to the point and interesting, indicating hot dogs were the speciality, so I went for the American Pit Bull (local Crombie sausages, which is great) with chilli and cheddar cheese. It was immense. This is a big old place with lots of seating and space to take advantage of, but it does get busy, so keep that in mind Lothian Road beverage perusers - the foraging bats of Edinburgh have come out of hibernation, and they're hungry for beer and delicious snacks. read more

An interesting concept executed well is the best way I can describe the Hanging Bat... You will come for the beer, and there is lots of it to choose from however there is a flaw and it starts with how the beer is sold 1/3, 1/2 or 2/3 of a pint for draught (note there is no draught cider) or you can buy a 330, 500 or 750 ML bottle... What you can't buy is a good old fashioned pint and given the bottled options (a UK pint is 568ML) that seems a bit pretentious. The layout (surprisingly) hasn't changed that much from the Mr Modos days, however the finish and decoration is modern and inviting. There is still a fairly large pillar opposite the centre of the bar, which can mean a tight squeeze when the place is busy and you want to get to the bar or the loos. However minor issues aside, I like beer and the beer here is good, so do check it out even if just for novelty value. read more

Service on the December night I was in turned out to be a bit ropey with wrong drinks being served both to me and other customers - a combination of new staff & others distracted by beer reviewers and the inevitable questions the place's range illicits. One of the bartenders at our hotel recommended the Hanging Bat for craft beer. We were lucky enough to grab a spot on the couch downstairs. The Bat has a extensive list of beers and a surprisingly good food menu. After a few pints we decided to try the pulled pork nachos, spicy wings, and the beer mac n' cheese. I have to say that I everything that we tried was delicious and much better than I would expect for "pub food." The Bat was definitely one of my favorite places during our trip to Edinburgh! read more

Any time anyone new comes through to Edinburgh, I force them to come to two places whilst they're in town. The Hanging Bat is one of them (Black Fox is t'other). I love the decor, I love the fact it's somewhere you can drink and have a quiet chat without music being blared out at you. I love the range of beers, ales and porters. I love the fact you can get absinthe served in the traditional sugarcube/spoon/glass method. The staff are friendly, ready to help with the (sometimes) bewildering array of beverages for sale. Definitely a place to try at least once! (Admittedly, I've not tried the food here. But I've rated it as purely as a watering hole!) read more

If you like beer or gin then you're probably going to have a good time. You can get 1/3 pints and if memory serves me right you can get 4 or 5 of them for 11 pound. The staff - and most of the customers - are always happy to pitch in and help you choose your drinks. It's great if you're not a beer drinker or want to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. Friday and Saturday are always very busy so I wouldn't recommend ordering a taster board then. Get yourself a pint or some hard liquor and you'll have a cracking night! read more

FIRST. I was lucky enough to be at the Hanging bat last night for an opening event. I'd been avoiding peeking in in order to survey it in it's full glory once it opened and I was not disappointed. First of all it smelt REALLY GOOD. Like wood chips, and lightly smokey (in a good "fireside" way - not like BBQ crisps or anything). It's very woody, in that there is wood everywhere. But in general it looks great, has a fantastic atmosphere which is half cosy, half bustling bar. The way the bar is laid out means that no matter how busy/quiet it is it will never seem too busy or empty. There are lots of places to sit in different group sizes. Beers - I can barely bring myself to discuss the beers as you really just have to go and try it out yourself. As a self confessed beer-head sampling so many excellent beers on tap was a delight. They had over a dozen different beers on Keg and cask, some of which were brand new to me, and all of them from the UK which was great to see. In particular they have a "Table beer" which is from Kernel, is very delicious, and is only 3% which is basically a soft drink. I look forward to re-hydrating on that again some time soon. They also do a "flight" for £10 which gives you the opportunity to sample 4 different beers of your choice, and also comes with your own 1/3 pint glass. Oh and they use tokens which means that you don't have to have all the beers on the same day! Excellent choice for those who don't fancy a session (although with the selection - who wouldn't want to spend an evening there) They are going to do pulled pork rolls, gourmet hot dogs, brisket, sauerkraut, and tonnes of other yummy stuff which I will return and review properly when I have a chance. But in general what I've tasted has been VERY yummy and compliments the beer well. They have their own brewing kit there too which means they'll be brewing their own beer, brewing with customers and teaching people about brewing. This is a very good thing. Finally the toilets are really fun. Check them out. They have beer tap taps..... Incredible. I shall update when I return and check out more beers and food! But in short check this place out. Stopped in for lunch and some beers, both were delicious. I went for the daily salad and the side of sweet potatoe fries and both were tasty! Love this bar. It is a beer hedonist's dream bar. Has the feel of a NYC loft bar and the craft beer to match its hipster crowd. On the pricey side to drink in all night, but you will not find this beer anywhere else. Seriously, you will not find this beer anywhere else. So, you go, you pay and you enjoy. The bar staff allow you to try any beer you are curious about before ordering and they don't mind pouring you several trials before you choose. That is the nature of pouring craft beer that you won't find anywhere else. The beers rotate in and out constantly and I have rarely rarely rarely found the same beer on tap twice. And, if I have, I've probably forgotten that I've tried it before because I have tried so many different ones in between. I love that about this spot. The food is alright. I find the pulled pork to be WAY too sauce-y and the portions to be a little crazy. But if you are hungry, by all means, tuck in. I love the macaroni and cheese. And, I have to say, this bar is EDINBURGH's BEST KEPT HOGMANAY/ New Year's Eve SECRET. I can't remember what the entry was anymore, but for around £25-30 you get 7 beers included in the price, a meal ticket (Hanging Bat bottle caps are the currency for the evening), and-- most importantly-- AN UNPACKED BAR on New Year's Eve. They sell a maximum of 125 of these which is half the capacity of the bar which means you will have a seat to sit on, a table to eat at and prop your drinks, a good atmosphere to celebrate with your nearest and dearest, and NO HASSLE getting your drinks at the bar. They let you out to see the fireworks (which has a viewing area a block away from the bar) and let you back in afterwards to carry on drinking and finishing up those 7 beers. And, if for any reason, you don't get through your 7 beers (some of the beers have very high alcohol percentages) that evening, if you keep your bottle caps, you can use them in the bar later in the year! Honestly, on an ordinary night in the bar, you could easily spend the £30 on 6 beers, so it's already a bargain. The fact that they kept you out of a calorie deficit while drinking and keep the bar at an acceptably full level just makes the Hogmanay/New Year's celebration that much better. Very enjoyable. In order to get these tickets, though, I recommend organizing your crew earlier on in the year (we're talking October, people) when they announce the tickets. read more

Homemade beer? Check. Home cider? Check check. Food? Relatively cheap and cheerful check check check. This list doesn't make much sense but sums up the Hanging Bat nicely. This bar is a busy place, attracting a wide clientel even on weekdays. It enjoys a super central position on Lothian road and so the volume levels can be pretty high if you just want to chat. Unfortunately I cannot really appreciate the local ales, not being a beer enthusiast, but there is some decent cider on offer. Food is fair but can be hit and miss. I ordered a cactus sub and it was a little bit lacking in... hmmmm... Je ne sais pas, some umph? Popcorn is provided around the bar area. This is a very nice little novelty. I would come here for a very good drink but might go elsewhere if I want to be able to hear the people I am dining/drinking with. read more

I have been looking forward to see how this place was going to look, and I wasn't disappointed. The ethos of the Hanging Bat is about good beer, stripped bare to what is good about it, and that has carried on into the design concept here. The walls have been stripped down to exposed rock, raw wood is everywhere and exposed copper pipes. I really like the design, feel and layout and I love clever touches like the beer tap water taps in the toilets with the keg sinks. Having just opened on the weekend, you can already see that this is going to be a new contender on the Edinburgh Craft Beer scene. The beer line-up is one of the best in town, a mix of quality UK cask, keg and bottle beers and I think most people they will discover new and wonderful beers here. If beer is not your thing, I was eyeing off their Gin selection which looks impressive, including the hipster Coconut and Grapefruit Hoxton Gin, and the cool spanish Gin Mare to name a few. With the opening party going strong last night they were sampling what food will be on offer, and I think this will be the place for the best hotdogs in town. So I need to come back for a full one. Keep an eye on this place, with their ability to show case the best breweries from the UK and abroad as well as their own brew kit! This will be the new hang out for the young beer fans. On a side note, they don't serve pints here. So this is not your typical 'drink some cheap pints of lager' bar. You have the option of 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 pints. This doesn't bother me as a lot of the beers are on the high ABV scale plus it means trying more beer. read more

We loved this spot! They are a nanobrewery but produce some incredible stuff. Over 20 unique drafts available at any given time, some their own and others from nearby local breweries. Good bottle and can selection as well. Bartenders know their stuff! Happy to talk you through the selection and make sure you find something that fits your palate. Great space to hang out and try several beers that can't be found elsewhere in the city. Didn't try any of the food but they do have a small kitchen, and the whole pub was clean, sleek and modern. This is a partial review. Not because I was only partially there, or somehow mistook the purpose of a bar, but because by the time I got there I had previously enjoyed some, or many, lovely whiskeys, and only remember a few vivid details of the bat. They have a belgium beer list- oh yes. Their section on farmhouse ales has maybe 10, none of which I know, so the lovely tatted bartender recommended two and though quite expensive they were impressive. So I remember pretty ladies and complex ales. I have a feeling the space was warm and inviting, not so like a cave as the name suggests, but the memory is dim. read more

There had been a buzz in Edinburgh for some time in 2012 when the news of a new and somewhat different bar would be opening on Lothian Road, especially among those keen on craft beer and "The Hanging Bat" didn't disappoint. My first visit was the day after the official opening and I have stopped by a couple times for beers since, my latest visit was for Yelp Edinburgh's second birthday party, when I finally got around to trying the food. The interior has been nicely redecorated from it's previous incarnation with a comfortable wood and glass finish, providing good seating on three split levels with a variety of bar stools, wooden benches and "leather" sofas providing a good relaxing atmosphere. The layout does mean there is not a lot of room at the bar (a large pillar in the middle of the room means you may have to squeeze past the crowd at the bar to get to the restrooms at the back). The selection of beers available is the main attraction here, with 6 casks on tap and around 14 kegs, what you will NOT get is any of your large "mainstream industrialized" beers (i.e. no Tennents, Heineken, Deuchars or Guinness here). What you will find is wide range of craft beers from smaller UK breweries served in , 1/2 and of a pint measures, the thinking being that by the time you get to the bottom of a pint it will have gone warm and flat. The lists of beers available is displayed on a large blackboard above the bar and can be rather daunting as the chances are you will not recognise a lot of them. The bar staff will be more than happy to tell you about the beers and let you try a wee taster of specific beers, this is a great idea if it's not too busy but is a bit of a hassle when the bar is busy (which is fairly often). They also do beer flights: "You pay £10 for 5 of a pint of any beer up to and including 7.4% (anything 7.5% or over is 2 tokens) plus you get a branded glass to keep". A small variety of non "mainstream" spirits is also available, I have heard they do an extensive range of gin (not my to taste so I cannot speak from experience). There's is also an extensive range of craft bottled beers available. Another highlight is the food, they do not have a large selection available but like the beer this is not your usual pub fare, no burgers and chips here. Their hotdogs have to be the stars (although there are other choices like roast chicken leg, pulled pork on a roll or macaroni and cheese are also available). The "Dogs" are smoked using their in-house smokery and I opted for the "American Pit Bull", which is served with chilli and cheese (other toppings include caramelised onions, sauerkraut and beetroot). The sausage was delicious and served in a lovely soft baguette style "bun", the chili was good possibly a bit too spicy for some people but worked well with the sausage. For £4.50 it's great value, probably not filling enough to be classed as a meal, but certainly filling, there are also side-orders available e.g. small tubs of potato salad or coleslaw. The dogs were served in little cardboard trays with paper sachets of salt and pepper, plastic cutlery and delivered on plastic trays, which does give a somewhat cheap fast-food diner feel but the quality of food more than makes up for it. The Hanging Bat calls itself a "beer cafe" and does fit this description rather well, it's not a traditional pub or a modern bar it's something different, providing a nice relaxed atmosphere with good craft beer and a good bite to eat. A great addition to the top end of Lothian Road which has sorely needed a decent drinking establishment to complement the rise of quality eating establishments that have opened in the past few years. read more

Much has been said about the Hanging bat so I won't be over the top here, but this is an awesome cafe/pub/bar. The beer selection is excellent and the food is actually delicious. I shared a giant thing of nachos here last Saturday afternoon and my stomach is grumbling just thinking about it. Gets really crowded because it is one of the coolest places in town, but if you can get a seat it is a wonderful place to hang out on the weekends or weeknights even. I still haven't tried a hot dog but I've heard they are good so I am excited to try! read more

The service here was fantastic, the drinks were cold and delicious, but the food left a bit to be desired. I got the falafel sub. It was pretty dry and difficult to swallow. In my experience falafel is flavorful and delicious with a good balance of sauce. This was pretty much inedible. The side of potato wedges I got came with a garlic mayonnaise dipping sauce. Those bad boys were amazing. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I could have and really should have eaten just that. My husband got the meatloaf burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was a bit odd, seasoned with rosemary but the fries were once again quite good. We decided to split a chili dog since we weren't quite satisfied. My husband liked it but I found the whole thing needlessly heavy. The bun was incredibly dense, like gluten free bread, and the chili and hotdog were all very flat. They'd go far to offer a fish and chips on their menu. I mean, even a fun quirky version would be welcome. The service alone redeemed our visit. Food takes WAY too long (40+ minutes) and there is no heat in the building. They also do not serve bud light which is a downside. Will not return. read more
