There are so many activities planned for the residents either at the Blake, like music concerts, luaus, country western, or trips to exiting places, like ice cream, pubs, wineries and more. The Director of Sales is always very cheerful when you see her and makes sure the residents are always heard.

This is THE WORST experience with a company I've ever experienced!!! Memory Care is a complete FAIL…read moreon humanity. Don't be fooled by the nice looking facade! The care is neglectful to say the least. Heather initially LIED to us as we signed our contract, we asked about staffing issues. She said, "We've got that fixed now because we don't hire agencies anymore, they all work for The Blake." HA! They couldn't function without agencies! And if you don't know what that means, there are random people coming in that don't care about doing their jobs and lie about your loved ones care. We got a camera for my grandmother's room where we found out some horrifying truths. 1. Agency workers talking about how they aren't going to do x,y and z for a resident because they're tired of being told to get off phones. 2. No one offering water and letting my grandma go without meals and taking meds on an empty stomach! I had to text Heather that no one had been in my grandma's room to get her up for breakfast OR lunch. Probably not dinner either if I hadn't said something. Then agency makes up lies that my grandma was tired from being up all night. Come on - we have a camera, she was in bed! 3. Workers on camera saying my grandma had, "Ants crawling all over her," in bed. 4. Because she was dehydrated and taking meds on empty stomach, she had multiple falls even when 2 people were assisting because according to one of the employees, "They are afraid to touch Memory Care residents." 5. Hygiene was terrible. Her teeth were never brushed and she rarely showered. To top it all off - we spent months talking with a merry-go-round of corporate people who are quite laughable and did nothing to resolve any care related concerns and they are also a revolving door. We shared concerns to Estella, Lorriene, Mindy, Paula (gone), Kyle (gone), Heather, and more. Because we constantly pointed out the lack of care and because Heather "didn't feel we liked her," their solution was to discharge my grandma. I'm a teacher and work with all types of people all the time and I've NEVER seen such a complete lack of management skills, professionalism, and huge deficit in empathy. They had no care about the trauma it would cause my grandma to move and she's one of the easiest residents they've had. It is sad what passes for care. They'll lie to you too and say oh, everything is fixed now. If you want your loved one's life to be short, move them in here. Oh, and then they said they would let her stay if we only gave them positive PR and reviews! We refused and moved her to a place that's actually caring for her. If you want more details on a wonderful place as I know good care is hard to find, my number is 434-989-7870. If your loved one is a resident here, I recommend filing a DSS complaint if youv3 noticed similar issues. They've had so many violations that they are on a 1-year probationary license that is up for renewal in December I believe. See attached documents of their ridiculousness. It's hard to say our care concerns are "unfounded" when it's all on camera. They're just afraid of being in hot water. I think I'll laugh out loud if I get a comment saying, "We're sorry you experienced this, call this number because we care." They care about $$$$$!

We were able to tour several floors with my mother-in-law. I can understand why she would like to make this her next home. Each floor carries a different geographical theme. The attention given to decorating each floor is pleasant to the eye without overload. It was nice how all the employees greeted each other and to hear many employees have been employed 6-7 years out of the 8 years of being opened. Even the residents greeted us and spoke very highly of Rose Wood. The facility was extremely clean and the air was not masked by any perfume sprays. Resident apartments were spacious and with lots of natural light. Each floor has its own cleaning service team. We were able to view laundry being delivered to resident rooms. It was nicely folded or ironed placed on hangers. It was nice to see residents actually getting their own belongs returned to them. Residents are able to take part in many daily activities, such as games, exercising, swimming, and mini field trips around Charlottesville. Personally knowing the owners is very comforting! My 87 year old mother ("the Unicorn" as they called her), was in assisted living at OLOP for 2…read moreweeks in the summer 2020 during the beginning of covid until they threw her out for leaving her room and wandering (she was disoriented with her new place and being unable to leave her room--only masked and repeatedly reprimanded by staff--plus she was not on any meds at that time). Before throwing her out they forced me to stay in her room with her twice saying they would throw her out if I didn't come stay with her, and then a couple days later the head CNA called me at 10:30 am on a Tuesday to say come get her NOW --that she was out! After that my mother then stayed at my house for 6 months until Christmas of 2020 when OLOP took her back, but only in the locked memory care facility. After a year and a half of her doing well in memory care--not belonging there at all--after many meetings I was able to get her moved back to assisted living. In the meantime we had paid a lot more money per month for memory care. When she was moved from one type of care to another they charged us a full month's rent in both places (to and from) because of their "30 day notice policy". So we paid double rent twice while she was there because of their policy even though they were initiating the moving each time She did very well in assisted living until the summer of 2023 when they neglected to keep her on her meds--saying it wasn't their job. She became agitated off her meds and without more than 2 meetings in a short period of time they moved her back to memory care--and again charged us double rent because of the lack of a 30 day notice. She went crazy then not being on her med and being locked up and threatened to climb over the fence and leave. Even though she was 90 plus at the time they said she was a flight risk and that by saying she was leaving she had "discharged herself". They threw her out with no place left to go and no place she could afford in Charlottesville after taking most of her retirement money. They told me as she left they would be willing to take her back if "she changed". Bottom line--they care about their liability and money. Not much compassion that I saw, except for the social worker. I hate to name names but most of the people who were working there in 2023 are still in charge now in 2026. If your parent has plenty of money, is docile and doesn't need much meds or care--send em there.

When she saw I was not going to back down she finally yelled out her name. Was not impressed with professionalism. Cooperation with census personnel is required by federal law and is part of the US Constitution.

When my uncle was ready to move to an assisted living facility, the task of finding the right one…read morewas daunting. But when we drove up to Culpeper Baptist Retirement, we just had a feeling this would be the right place. It is surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful land...and has a beautiful driveway with ample parking (not a ton of spaces, but there are never too many cars in the front). We met with Rose and Tammy and immediately my uncle felt at ease with them. They were forthright and easy to talk to. My uncle has been with them for two months and, so far, everything they said about how they operate has been true. They are easy to reach and they don't hesitate to contact me with any issues my uncle may be having including any time he visits the doctor. For someone who lives in another state, it gives me great comfort that I can call and reach someone at any time and that they, too, call me consistently to give me updates. The people who work there have all been kind and all seem to work together well. My Uncle has enjoyed the varied menu of food offered at meal times (he loves not having to cook). And there are PLENTY of activities offered to the folks who stay there. There is more to say...but more than anything, we feel they are a place of integrity and they treat their clients well. We are big fans.

My wife has been In Poet's Walk for seven months. She is a dementia patient and is bound to a…read morewheelchair, unable to feed herself. Having been in another facility where her care fell short of her needs, I searched the local area to find a facility that I thought could provide the care she needed. That led me to Poet's Walk which has turned out to be the right choice. From the moment that my family and I toured the Poet's Walk facility, seeing the staff at work with the patients, I was left with a feeling that they knew what they were doing and the level of care that my wife needed would be available. The staff works well with each other; each residence is assigned to a specific Care Partner. They assist each other as necessary for the proper care of each resident. In watching the care partners at work, most really show care for the residence. The building was thoughtfully designed. There are two U-shaped wings for the resident's rooms with a dining room for each wing. Each wing is connected to a central area that is called the Main Street. From the Main Street area there is an outside courtyard that allows the residents to enjoy being outside on nice days, surrounded and protected by the surrounding building. My wife and I often sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy being outside among the flowers, many of which are taken care of by the residence that have that ability. The Main Street area allows the residents to gather and enjoy the many programs that are designed for their abilities and pleasure. On my daily visits to my wife, I often watch them play games of different types and see the enjoyment they get from the entertainment often provided. Although my wife is unable to participate, she does enjoy watching the activities. My wife and I eat together daily at lunch. I really enjoy feeding her and look forward to our time together. She eats breakfast and dinner with the assistance of a care partner. The food is good and might be considered excellent for this type of facility. It has improved considerably over the past few months. Organization in the dining room has gotten better but patients is required by all as the staff must assist the residence to get to the dining rooms and then sort out the correct type of food for each resident. This all takes time sometimes causing a wait to eat. Poet's Walk is well managed. I see and talk to the different section directors, almost on a daily basis. They are always open to suggestions and strive to find a better way to do things, evidenced by the changes that have take place, always to the better. Is Poet's Walk perfect?
