When considering to move my loved one into Commonwealth Senior Living (CSL) in Front Royal, the office manager (?) promised a credit to their fee schedule, and made generalized markings on the fee schedule document. This promised credit was not added to the contract, and we naively thought they would honor their promise. My loved one required a higher level of care, which CSL quickly offered, and naturally came at a higher cost ($35/day). I didn't think about, "what if they're hospitalized?" Not too long after my loved one moved in, they were hospitalized. We were understandably billed for the room, but also for the higher level of care (about ten days, on two different occasions). When we contacted the office manager, she said to pay the higher level of care cost (the additional $35+ daily cost) to avoid any late fees and a credit would be issued the next month. This happened the following month also. [I should add that CSL was unable to provide the level of care my loved one needed but did not let the family know this.] No discounted fee credits (promised) were ever issued, nor were the credits issued for the daily level of care while they were hospitalized. Multiple phone calls, even trips to the office resulted in no response or credit given. My loved one passed and didn't give the required 30-day notice. Another important "what if" question that should have been asked. Two years of trying to get resolution, no response from the Front Royal office. I finally elevated the issue to the corporate level, which prompted a response from the Front Royal office, not to answer my questions and concerns but to give me an option of having a zero balance (since my loved one passed prior to giving the 30-day notice), and to a two-day deadline to decide. CSL's contract has obviously developed from a well learned business view, however, it is not a win/win contract for people looking for a place for their loved one to be looked after and cared for.

My father and I were new to this process, and had no idea where to start. We didn't have a lot of financial freedom and limited choices in the Shenandoah Valley for my 90 year old grandmother who has dementia. We visited the facility and it seemed charming and the people seemed kind. They evaluated my Grandmother and determined that she did not need to be in "Morning Glory" the dementia care unit. We were surprised, but saw their crudentials and thought they knew best. The place looked over all clean and the rooms attended to. After one week of my Grandmother being there, we started to see some stark contrasts to the "homey haven" we visited at first. We began to see that it was unkept, that people were wandering around without adequate mind to do so, the door was never locked, and it started to seem like there was a faint smell, but we blew these things off. Maybe it was a bad day. Things seemed to get worse. We were in there 3 times a week usually and starting to notice some really odd things. My Grandmother started to have other people's clothing on. I would often come and she would be very dirty. Food on her some days, other days she would just seem "out of it." The bathroom would constantly have urine about the floor as we realized that she was sharing a bathroom with 6 other people. As the next weeks came on, my Grandmother seemed weaker and weaker. They would tell me she didn't eat breakfast or lunch.. which began to startle me as she was supposed to take her medicine with food. Her knees began buckling when we would go to see her and we realized that something was very wrong. My sister watched them look over her medicine routine so we could only assume this was happening regularly. Later, both my Sister and Father overheard a nurse yelling at her to put her clothes on, then yet another nurse telling the room next door to shut up. By this point we were beyond at our wits end, frightened and over all a nervous wreck with her being there just one more day. We removed her after one month and vowed that we would write this review to warn others as going in to this we would have loved to see a review that would have helped us along or given us any indication. There was nothing on this particular facility. We have since moved her to Shenandoah Terrace in Woodstock, VA and it is night and day the change. We found out that she was being given panic medication as a maintenance drug, which would explain the behavior. We suspect she was not getting her meds in general correctly which further disrupted her mind and body. She is bright eyed and looks healthy and stronger than ever after just 3 weeks. We are just so thankful for her new home. Please beware of Dutch Haven and do not buy into the act that they portray there. It is not fit for elderly people and the staff is not knowledgable, motivated, nor compassionate enough to take on this level of care to help the elderly community.

But when we drove up to Culpeper Baptist Retirement, we just had a feeling this would be the right place. It is surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful land...and has a beautiful driveway with ample parking (not a ton of spaces, but there are never too many cars in the front). We met with Rose and Tammy and immediately my uncle felt at ease with them. They were forthright and easy to talk to. My uncle has been with them for two months and, so far, everything they said about how they operate has been true. They are easy to reach and they don't hesitate to contact me with any issues my uncle may be having including any time he visits the doctor. For someone who lives in another state, it gives me great comfort that I can call and reach someone at any time and that they, too, call me consistently to give me updates. The people who work there have all been kind and all seem to work together well. My Uncle has enjoyed the varied menu of food offered at meal times (he loves not having to cook). And there are PLENTY of activities offered to the folks who stay there. There is more to say...but more than anything, we feel they are a place of integrity and they treat their clients well. We are big fans.

This place is amazing!…read more We needed to move my father into an assisted living facility when his physical and mental health made it hard for my mother to care for him alone at home. A typical nursing home would not have provided the best fit in terms of a living environment for him. My mother had a company help find my dad Golden Years and More. My mom toured other similar facilities but this one stood out from the rest. It wasn't the cheapest or most expensive place, but the "right" place. They also came to my mom's home to assess my dad's condition to make sure he was the right fit for their facility too. There is a family that lives here and cares for up to eight patients. They currently have four, I believe. The family is medically trained and three to four people are there to assist residents 24-7. They cook meals, wash laundry, assist with bathing, provide activities. This family has truly found their calling! When my father needs assistance in the middle of the night, someone is right there for him. At home with my mom he was getting up and falling down - requiring my mom to call the rescue squad to help get him off of the floor. We no longer have that problem. He is cared for by a team - a family! My dad is happy there. He moved in approximately three months ago. My mom is comforted knowing he is there. My sister and I wish he was closer to us but we know he is getting better care than he would at home. His new home is welcoming. I visit weekly and it's always a pleasant visit. Plenty of private parking. Obviously the facility is handicap accessible. Nicely decorated. Private rooms.
