What a fantastic surprise! I was traveling to DC for a fun weekend with girlfriends, and we ended up stopping in Halifax to check out the town. On the recommendation of a woman running an estate sale where we stopped, we went to The Hen and Hog for lunch. From the start, it was a lovely experience. Our waitress, Diann, was so friendly and fun. The menu looked so good that we all decided together what to order so we could try a bunch of things by sharing. The decor inside is super interesting- the states listed on the stairs, historical documents on the walls, really neat industrial and wood decor. Very yummy! The beef short ribs sandwich was excellent! Not crazy about the au jus sauce as to me it was oily. Mac and cheese had good cheddar flavor. Deviled eggs were very yummmy, just wish there were more as you pay $9 for 1.5 eggs worth. Service was friendly and great ice tea was good. The Hen and the Hog is an amazing gem in the quaint town of Halifax! I am so happy to see that they are reviving their downtown and making it as if not more beautiful than it was years ago! Upon walking in, I was taken in by the rustic decor and large flowing steps. We picked a table away from the door as it was super chilly! My colleagues and I checked out the menu, and my eyes immediately jumped to the vegetarian chili. Sweet potatoes are topped with lentils, onions, beans, and cinammon. I could not resist, and after the waitresses' recommendation, it was a total yes for me! The chili came out not in a bowl but on four sweet potatoes! They were so cute that I did not want to eat them at all, but of course I did! Each bite of the chili had a hint of something that I did not get in the last bite. It was so full of flavor, and again, the presentation was not what I was expecting at all! I was able to take my leftover home for later, which I can not wait to devour! Exploring Historical Halifax, NC today and stopped in for lunch. Cool name and very nice place. Not too crowded and welcoming. You notice the stairwell as soon as you step in... original 13 Colonies. Very cool. We sat at the bar.... Small but comfy. Madeline was our server and she was quite friendly and had beautiful red hair. We ordered cold drinks, a hamburger with a side of chips & collard greens. All very tasty, properly cooked for us and downright delicious. I have a project in Emporia, VA which has NOTHING good near it, so I have been patiently waiting for this place to open during the time I am there. I was finally lucky to have a dinner there. Very accommodating with gluten free, service was friendly and top notch. They have a solid selection of drinks (beers etc) for those of you who enjoy partaking. The chef actually visited out table to see if everything was up to our standard. The indoor decor is homey and clean, kind of southern country with some class. I recommend making reservations as tables seemed to fill up quickly. The only downside, it was hot in there-the building is OLD so I believe the HVAC has a hard time keeping up in the summer. My team went back to eat and really enjoyed their food. Prices are very fair. read more

My husband and I started off with the fried pimento cheese fritters and southern style deviled eggs. We ordered the shrimp & grits and grilled pork tenderloin next for our entrees. Saving room for dessert is a must. We chose the peach cobbler with cinnamon ice cream. All of the food was AMAZING! I do want to touch on dining here during COVID-19, we felt safe. We have planned for quite a while to eat at the Hen and the Hog. My friend and I both ordered the Shrimp and Grits. It was very different and absolutely delicious. The presentation was disappointing. It was served in a black bowl with sauce crusted on the outside, no plate underneath, so of course no garnish. No bread even though it was "juicy". I ask for bread and after I was finished, I was served 2 pieces of toast, at a cost of $1.00 per slice. The service was just OK. We will go back. The atmosphere is wonderful, loved the pot belly stove. Certainly worth the drive to Halifax. I hope these remarks make a difference. read more

I stopped in with my daughter and was denied service. The place had 10 to 15 tables available and claimed they were all reserved, I asked what time and she could not answer. I then was told there there isn't enough food to accommodate me since I don't have a reservation which is completely absurd. I was the only person of color there so I should have known. I will never come here and make sure that everyone knows this is a racist establishment and I will make sure everyone knows not to patron this business. read more

Honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. We were so excited to try this restaurant and were disappointed with all aspects. When we arrived for our reservation 10 minutes early we went to the bar to grab a drink before we sat down. We were completely ignored. When we were seated we ordered drinks and received them after our food came out. My husband's steak was overdone and the shrimp and grits were sub par. Good overall variety of menu choices - with upscale twists on southern classics. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits and was quite pleased. Our table also had the pork chop, sweet corn and shrimp chowder, and mini crab cakes. All were delicious and plated beautifully. The finale was warm fig cobbler a la mode (with vanilla ice cream). We drove down from Gaston Lake based on the reviews and we weren't disappointed! Wife had the pulled pork sandwich and it was so full of flavor and sooo tender! I had the shrimp plate with the Mac and cheese, the shrimp were lightly breaded and excellent, the mac and cheese was so creamy with lots of bacon and a few bread crumbs. I was with another person who had reviewed this restaurant during a recent road trip and I need to elaborate and rebut a bit on the reply by the "manager". When we arrived here we were told by the hostess we needed to wait because she needed to go do something before seating us. She then planned to seat us directly next to where we were standing, something that could have been done prior with 4 seconds of effort. The table she attempted to seat us at was so close in relation to the next table that I could have knelt on the table and fell forward and my face would have been kept from hitting the floor by the man's lap at the table next to us. With at least 6 other tables available for the manager to say this was trying their best to accommodate during a pandemic is genuinely sad. We were then sat next to the door entering the restaurant. At the admission of the hostess, the staff was overwhelmed with the 8-9 tables currently seated and everyone was scrambling around to figure out how to handle "the rush". This could be why we were sat within an arm's reach of every patron entering or exiting the restaurant, couldn't say for sure. It could also be why our hostess took our drink orders and why she was unable to provide straws after being asked twice, again couldn't speak to that. When my friend said that he would like to speak with management and our hostess mentioned that to the manager (who we now know was also our server), she audibly replied "they're just going to have to wait". This was conveniently left off her reply to my friend. She however was capable of bringing straws nearly 5 minutes after she was asked. I would like to mention that I am an Executive Chef of 20+ years and would NEVER even contemplate leaving a review like this unless it was not only 100% warranted, but you'd have to do something else pretty despicable to bring this out of me as well. Something like responding to a negative review by somehow attempting to place blame on the diner who was looking to spend his hard earned money in your establishment and was not only met with all of this disappointment but also given a response that would insinuate that had he made a reservation it would have somehow created a different dining scenario. Poor planning equals poor execution, if you want to operate on reservations only perhaps that is for the best moving forward but if you cannot handle walk in guests and aren't able to run the floor and manage the kitchen with one server calling off shift, that is in NO way the fault of the person attempting to make sure you have the overhead to continue your operations. If the "management" had handled this properly I would have NEVER left this review, which is why I left this alone for nearly a week since this incident. Take ownership of your errors and fix your operation...it looked like a nice place, shame I didn't get a chance to find out. read more

This use to be a spot we visited often, mostly for their more casual menu on Thursdays. I'm not familiar with their chef, or if it's the same one as the time we visited in the last year, but while the service is still mostly good, the food is just not the same. While we had a table of food, the pimiento salad dressing they use did not taste the same, it was like very peppery ranch. I got the pork tenderloin and within the first bite it tasted like it had been microwaved too long, yes microwaved. It was dry and hard to chew. The sides were rice and Brussels sprouts. All the Brussels sprouts seemed to have going for them was the soaked in balsamic vinegar taste, but also had a very earthy taste and the rice was just plain rice that was somewhat stuck together. The shrimp and grits tasted as if the grits had sat for awhile. The salmon was the only thing worth visiting for and I had regrets not ordering that instead. It seemed the be the freshest item choice. The mashed potatoes the salmon sat on fit very well and the plate was the only empty one at the table. They were slightly busy, the least busy I've ever seen and last time we visited the chef still made it out to meet with those enjoying their food. Maybe the kitchen is under staffed, but I just felt like our experience for the price was unacceptable for the little town we love. Our last experience was similar but we felt our food was much more fresh before. We probably won't be back for awhile just because of the inconsistency and we've just missed the first bite experience that use to be overwhelmingly amazing. read more

We were in a sandwich mood, and both were outstanding, using very fresh ingredients. The Chicken wrap was tangy with apples, cranberries and a honey Mayo. And we had a chicken salad sandwich that was stuffed with the best all white meat chicken salad I have ever tasted. Sides were amazing too... ultra-creamy Mac and cheese topped with bacon, and a beautiful wedge salad with their signature pimento cheese dressing. A gem in this little community! We were staying in Roanoke Rapids and saw this place in Yelp and decided to try it. It was a Saturday evening and their "upscale" dinner night. We didn't know this and hadn't dressed up but felt fine dining anyways. Other nights are "casual" nights and feature different menu items than Saturday. On Saturday the bar opens at 5 and seating starts at 6. Make note of the hours before you go because they're not open all day! We had the Summer Salad and the Chicken and Grits with Blueberry Jalapeno Sauce. Both were very good. I enjoyed the interesting pairing of blueberry with chicken.
