Terrible customer service, y'all: Bethesda Smoke Shop on River Road is a nightmare…read more I rarely leave negative reviews (and don't enjoy them, either). That said, my husband's experience at Bethesda Tobacco in Bethesda earlier today was so bad that, well, I am compelled to warn others. He went in hoping to ask some straightforward questions about some items, and to then (hopefully) purchase a product. When he arrived, the store appeared empty, so he waited a few minutes. Eventually, an employee emerged from the back - holding a sandwich, mind you - and began talking to him while chewing. I cannot stress enough how unprofessional and off-putting this was. No greeting, no acknowledgment of the wait (or of my husband, really): just a mouth full of food, and an attitude of annoyance. My husband asked about options in the $30 price range, since many products were priced around $50. The employee's response was basically "nope" (with a mouth full of sandwich) - delivered with no explanation or alternative suggestions. It was obvious that customer service was not a priority. Things only got worse when my husband tried to clarify dosage versus price. There was a $10 product labeled as 200 mg, and a $55 product with the same dosage. When he asked about the difference, the employee "carelessly" admitted he didn't know, and proceeded to keep eating his sandwich. At that point, my husband just left the store; it was clear he was not going to get any helpful information. The very small silver lining: Bethesda Smoke Shop does carry a very wide selection of kratom and nicotine vapes. Unfortunately, product variety cannot make up for completely incompetent and disrespectful customer service. Being talked to with someone's mouth full of food, dismissed without answers, and ignored while standing in the store is utterly unacceptable. I would not recommend Bethesda Smoke Shop to anyone looking for knowledgeable staff, professional service, or even a basic level of courtesy: there are plenty of other stores where employees actually care about helping customers. 1 star - 0 stars, actually, but I don't think that's an option on here. And, it makes me sad to be honest: I was a regular there a few years back; the gentlemen working there all knew who I was, and would always help me out if I was short a few cents. *Deep Sigh* Looks like things have plummeted over there.

If you're in DC and you don't visit this place... you're doing cannabis all wrong…read more Tucked away on the second floor of a laid-back building, this shop doesn't scream for attention--it whispers cool. The moment you walk in, the vibe hits you: mellow lighting, a soothing aroma in the air, and the kind of calm energy that instantly makes you feel like you're exactly where you need to be. You're greeted right away, no awkward waiting or confusion just warmth and professionalism. The check-in process was smooth and welcoming, setting the tone for what turned out to be the best dispensary experience of my life. Now let's talk about Brandon and Zayna because they're the heart and soul of this place. These two weren't just friendly; they were encyclopedias of cannabis knowledge wrapped in genuinely good energy. Brandon walked me through their top strains with the ease and passion of someone who truly loves the craft, breaking down terpene profiles, effects, and even the grower history of some of their stock. Zayna jumped in with recs based on what I was into and offered some truly insightful advice about edibles and hybrids that would suit my needs and honestly, she nailed every one of them. They hooked me up with a very generous haul (let's just say there was definitely some love added in), and every product was fire. Not only that, they went above and beyond, offering up amazing suggestions for food, bars, and things to do around DC like having two chill local guides rolled into one stellar cannabis experience. It's rare to walk into a place and feel instantly like you're in good hands but this spot does exactly that. It's not just a transaction here. It's a whole vibe, a moment, an elevated experience from start to finish. If you're looking for high quality flower, unmatched customer service, and the kind of personal touch that turns a purchase into a memory you found your spot.

The medical card is free, and while Andy and others are super nice, it doesn't make up for the fact they're out of everything 23/6. You may get lucky and get some poorly rolled joints for cheap, but if you can, get the med card and just find a spot near your house; the new pen I got from a downtown DC Spot was great and only $20 more than Smoke Island PLUS my med card was free. I'd recommend other spots unless you're 18-20, or strapped on cash.

I am writing to say two things, the first descriptive, the second complimentary. The first thing is that like many other smoke shops nowadays, this is not primarily a place catering to those who want cigars or pipe tobacco. That said, they have a bit, enough that I've purchased from there due to the convenient location. I'd rate them as better than most of their peers in this regard. The second is the clerks are friendly and helpful. I was surprised they recognized my wife and me the second time we went in. That is unusual. Or perhaps we are a distinctive couple. So if you are in upper NW DC and in need of what they offer, Smoke Island is a fine choice.
