The entire team at Hometown Chef is amazing and always works with my clients to help build their perfect menu. The owners are a husband/wife team who meet every single potential client personally during the tastings. Tiffany takes time out to learn your story so they can know what is important to you. They have a catering menu, but are open to requests. Chef Julio is always ready for the next challenge. He personally comes out to receive feedback so that he can make the proper adjustments before the actual event. One of my brides wanted her jambalaya spicier and Chef made it happen without skipping a beat. The service on the day of the actual event is truly unparalleled! I've worked with many catering companies and none of them compare to the way this team works. The staff is extremely professional and checks in with me often to see how the timeline is coming along. They have no problem making adjustments when we are running behind and never make me feel stressed about it! Their service includes busing the tables and this is a task they take very seriously. Unfortunately did not have a great experience with this company. I recently attended my friends' wedding as one of the few vegans there and the option provided was sub par. It was supposed to be "cauliflower parmesan" (like chicken parm) with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus but we ended up with 3 cauliflower florets on the plate slathered in marinara sauce, no asparagus at all, non-garlic mashed potatoes, and some random weird grain loaf thing that they claimed was vegan bread? It wasn't good! Frustrated for my friends who went out of their way to provide a vegan option for us and it not being at all what they asked for on our behalf. By the way the bride is vegetarian!! So this was her meal for their special night too. Unacceptable! They invested their time, money, and trust into your company and y'all did not deliver. read more

TL;DR - Fiancée and I got catfished. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! Let me start off by saying that I understand that catering is difficult due to travel time for the food and cooking in mass quantities. That said, what we got was NOWHERE NEAR what was promised and we were extremely disappointed. When we went to our menu tasting, the food was amazing! We were both really excited because the options we chose tasted great and we had hoped our wedding would be the one to actually have good food for once (spoilers: it didn't). Among the dishes were salmon, chicken, brussel sprouts, "adult" mac and cheese, as well as garlic bread and salad. Fast forward to the big day, we get our plate of food and immediately notice it doesn't look quite like what we had tried and expected. Ok, it takes time to get to the venue and food doesn't stay fresh forever, but taste and quality-wise it was akin to getting stale fast food - at least with old fast food, you know what to expect! Food: I thought the chicken was decently tender with an average sauce whereas my fiancée said her piece of chicken was bland and overcooked. My piece of salmon, as well as a few other guests, had bones in it. I'm glad the children attending didn't have issues with theirs, but that's not something I should have to worry about! The "adult" mac and cheese which my fiancée had been particularly excited for was basically just Kraft mac and cheese. Seriously. We went from a velvety and saucy mac with a slight kick to basically something most children could make on their own from a box. Garlic bread and salad were pretty standard and the only saving grace from this catering company were the brussel sprouts which actually tasted not too different from what we had tried. For quality reference, we had purchased a lechon (roasted pig) from another restaurant and brought it to the venue in the morning when we arrived to get ready and that was leagues better after 6 HOURS of sitting out compared to the "fresh" catered food. Conclusion: We intended to splurge ($60 per person!) on quality food after going through several different vendors and were excited after sampling what HomeTown Chef had to offer. To our displeasure, the product we got on our big day was nothing close to what we were promised. Quality control and consistency among dishes were extremely lax. The chicken had varying degrees of doneness from tender to rubber bullet and unlucky people (myself included) had bones in their pieces of salmon, something you should NEVER have had to worry about in the first place. Taste was a far cry from what we expected. The salmon wasn't as good as we remembered and the "adult" mac and cheese was not any better than something you could get at the grocery store. Gotta give credit where credit is due: whoever cooked the brussel sprouts that day did a good job as that was the only thing that was consistently good. Overall though, I would HIGHLY DISCOURAGE prospective clients from rendering HomeTown Chef's services unless they really step up their game past the initial sampling and can actually deliver even a fraction of what they promise. Honestly, you're better off treating each guest to a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant because at least you know the money you splurge on them will be spent on good food and not the bait-and-switch we had the misfortune of experiencing. read more

The company did not deliver what they were expected to deliver and left out some of the options that they were supposed to serve. When confronted about their mistake, they had horrible customer service and did not own up to anything. I attended a wedding this weekend, and I have to say that this was the worst food I have ever had at a wedding. The portions were minuscule, and what was on the plate was bone dry and cold. A couple of friends of mine got married and it was a beautiful celebration of their union. The evening was going well and it was time to eat. I talked with them prior to the wedding and they already let me know the vegan option they would be serving at the wedding and I was excited and couldn't wait to eat. The meal I was given was nothing they described. There were about three cauliflower florets instead of a cauliflower steak drowning in tomato sauce, some very dry mashed potatoes and the very worse part of the meal some "vegan bread." It was probably the nastiest thing I ever ate in my entire life and was in no way, shape, or form bread. It was just some rice or grains mashed together. Needless to say I had to grab something to eat after the wedding because the meal has barely edible. If you are looking for someone to cater your event I 0/100 would not recommend even if they are the last caterers on earth. read more

Do not! I repeat do not use this catering company for your large gathering. The food was cold and gray like hospital food. I ordered special appetizers for the bridal party as a special treat. Tiffany's crew forgot them in the over and then still have the nerve to serve these ugly dried out things to my bride and groom in their alone dinner. No one else got them because they were served so late ( but my daughter said they were dried out and gross). I ordered rolls and butter, ice tea and bet they were on my bill but not at my party. Tiffany still hasn't responded to all of my issues. Tiffany Is defensive and rude. Also very bad at catering! They served the mother of the bride last btw the lady who paid for 8900 worth of crap! I could have gotten better food at Rudy's and paid serving staff. This catering company does not care please don't use them! Our wedding was gorgeous! BE WARNED...Attended a wedding and this catering service was the hire. First off the chicken served on my plate was flat out RAW! Not oh, this could have been cooked a little more for my liking. NO, FLAT OUT RAW! Slowly you began to hear and see others around the room humming of their food being raw or wrong all together. I feel bad, that this couple had to even worry about this DURING the reception and all the aftermath issues, when they should be doing nothing but enjoying their big day and getting ready for their honeymoon. Their food is truly delicious and you can tell it is all from scratch and made fresh to serve. The grilled chicken is some of the most flavorful food I have ever tasted and was cooked to perfection. They catered our wedding at The Overlook in September of 2014. They offer a large variety of types of food, and types of service. You can go plate dinner or buffet style. For our wedding, we chose bbq buffet. They even let me tweak a few things. All the food was insanely delicious. They are very nice and want to make sure your food is just right. They also offer kids meals for children at the wedding, cheese plates for guests, snack plates for the bridal parties, and other small things like that. I got compliment after compliment on how good the food was. I can't thank The Hometown Chef enough. They also set up a private dining area for my husband and I to eat after the ceremony and before the reception. With all the activity, it's the only way we would have been able to have a meal, and I am so happy they recommended it! To add insult to injury some of the chicken was undercooked. In the food industry subpar product is never ok. I wouldn't have this company service my pets events that's how bad it was. We have used The Hometown Chef for the last few years to cater several community events; we use them no less than 2 times a year and have referred them countlessly to others. The last time our community used them was this past weekend. We've witnessed this company grow from its humble beginnings to the city-wide success they have become, and 2 things have never changed: their excellent food and their commitment to customer service and satisfaction. All of their food is delicious, from their pork belly bites to their huge selection of gourmet meatballs to their gorgeous fruit and cheese displays. They change their menu just enough to keep things interesting, so we've never had the same menu for every event, which keeps things fresh and exciting. Their customer service is second to none. When walking into their office to plan our next event, I feel like I'm about to meet friends for coffee. We chat for a bit before ever opening a menu. Their office staff bailed me out last year during a snafu with another vendor, including personally calling and texting me to see what she could do to help. And mind you, the error was another vendor, not them! This past event couldn't have been smoother. Our bartender was affable and so quick to serve and accommodate our guests. Other staff who set up our food were friendly, efficient, early to the event (!!), and made sure I was happy along with our guests. I can't imagine using another catering company for our community events, and I am always happy to hear back from residents to whom I referred The Hometown Chef, who are also very pleased with their delicious food and quality of service. The Hometown Chef did an AMAZING job for our wedding at the Gardens at Madeley Manor. They are willing to work with you to create a menu that fits your event. We wanted to have a traditional family style dinner, which is pretty unconventional for weddings, but Tiffany was immediately on board when we brought up the idea to her! Make sure to go for a tasting so you can meet the chef and taste all the great food options they have to offer. This is by far the worst catering experience I've ever had! The wedding I attended was catered by this company and I was astounded when I cut into my chicken. It was completely raw. I assumed this had to be a mistake, maybe just one piece of chicken was raw but then I proceeded to look around me and noticed that everyone had the same issue. About 95% of the food was raw. What's even worse is when this was brought to their attention they completely dismissed it. Risking people getting sick and catching Salmonella wasn't important to them. I honestly could not believe what was going on. I felt so bad for the Bride and Groom because there was nothing they could do it about it. This was suppose to be the most magical day of their lives and instead it turned into a stressful experience where they couldn't even enjoy their first meal together as husband and wife surrounded by all their family and friends. This company's lack of accountability for the uncooked food they decided to serve and continued to serve, and the poor customer service that followed after this was unacceptable. Out of all the vendors at my wedding, Hometown Chef was the only vendor that didn't live up to expectations and disappointed us greatly on the day off. We paid for a seated dinner service with three different entree choices for our guests: steak, chicken, and vegetarian. Our dinner service was assigned seating and each guest had already selected a meal on their RSVP. We had several issues with them, but I've broken down the main ones below. COMMUNICATION: This was the most longstanding issue we had with Hometown Chef that really shook my confidence that they could even handle my wedding. A few weeks prior to the event, I emailed HC to discuss what would help them the most on the escort cards to show what entree each guest had selected. To my surprise, they informed me that it only mattered who picked vegetarian since meat eaters would be receiving both chicken and steak. Never at either of our tastings had they discussed that this was their intention. From the beginning, we had made it very clear that we would be offering three different entrees. (Some of our guests are Hindi and can't have red meat, some choose not to eat red meat, etc.) If that was always the plan, why didn't it ring any alarms when I sent over exact numbers of steak, chicken, and vegetarian guests? Instead of fixing the issue, Tiffany called me to try and convince me that it was "very hard work" for them and me as the bride to handle three different entrees. This is NOT what a bride wants to hear her caterer say just weeks out from the wedding. On our call, she informed me of other decisions, like how she wanted to pre-plate the salads on the table and not have it as the first course. When asked when we would have had this conversation if I hadn't emailed first, Tiffany said they call brides one week out. No one informed me of this either, so I'm not sure I believe it, and secondly, who wants to make big catering decisions a week out from their wedding? The last comment that really threw my nerves on edge, came three days before my wedding from my planner that HC wanted to change their mind about bread baskets and instead plate bread on each plate. I'm celiac and severely allergic, as our some of our guests. We had had the discussion several times on how important it was to keep bread secluded in the basket for cross-confirmation purposes. If we hadn't caught that and remedied it, my guests and I could have spent my wedding day in the hospital. FOOD QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY: The food we received at our wedding was extremely disappointing and NOT what we received at our tastings. For our sides, we selected green beans almandine and herb roasted potatoes. We were served canned green beans and boiled potatoes with hardly any herb coating at our reception. The beans were clearly canned as they were French style cut and mushy, while they were whole beans and crunchier at both our tastings. The potatoes were clearly boiled as they had zero crunchy coating and were two fork pushes away from being mashed potatoes with zero flavor. The steak and chicken were reheated with the chicken extremely rubbery and the steak an off-color. We paid over $65 a person and to receive such piss-poor quality on our wedding was not just disappointing, but frankly, insulting. Our guests even commented on the state of the food, which was pretty embarrassing. Overall, I would NOT recommend this caterer to brides that want quality food at their reception, especially brides that want seated dinners. It seems like it is too much hard work for HC to complete in a consistent and appropriate manner for a wedding. The 1 star is for their wait staff. They got the food out in a timely manner, and were so kind. I could tell they were working really hard, but when you have management issues and a chef that is okay with just pouring Italian dressing on chicken as his tapenade (yes, this huge red flag happened at our second tasting), some things just can't be overcome. read more

We recently used The Hometown Chef for our wedding on 10/13/19 and I cannot explain how pleased I was with the experience of working with these guys. From the initial consult, which they organized as a courtesy to us super last minute, to putting together the menu and all the changes we had, to executing perfectly the day of, the head chef Julio, Tiffany, Donna, all the staff and everyone we worked with was absolutely wonderful. We had a unique component to our wedding (I'm of Ukrainian background) where we brought in our own appetizers and requested The Hometown Chef to plate all of them and serve (for 20 tables as well as the sweetheart table for us). Not a single issue was experienced throughout our evening and on top of that, all our guests were supremely satisfied with the quality/taste of the food. It was immediately evident when we first met the head chef Julio for the tasting that he knows what he is doing and is clearly gifted at his craft. The taste of the food was a massive factor for us and he delivered in spades. Once again, super highly recommend these guys. They were professional, flexible, Affordable (!), courteous and trustworthy. Thank you so much for what you did for us on our wedding day. It will not soon be forgotten. read more

As a chef & owner of my own catering company, it was hard to find a caterer within our budget who was as good as the best that I'm aware of in Houston (i.e. A Fare Extraordinaire, Cordua, etc.). We found the Hometown Chef, and after a few emails and phone calls, we felt confident that they would provide creative and delicious dishes to impress our wedding guests who knew of my profession. Unfortunately their descriptions of the food was all talk, and we were EXTREMELY disappointed when we saw the final result on our wedding day. I sent them a polite email the following day describing everything that was done wrong and said I would not leave a bad review, expecting that they would respond to my email like a professional to maybe explain why things didn't turn out- with good reasons. As I expected, this small company is not run professionally, so they completely ignored my email. I decided that future brides should then be aware of their service quality. We had action stations at our wedding, and most of them were not replenished after guests had gone up to get food, so they were having to wait around by the stations instead of dancing and enjoying the wedding. Most of our passed appetizers looked either rushed or like no thought at all was put into the presentation. A few of our guests were nervous to eat the tuna ceviche because they said it looked like cat food (which it did). Overall, don't use this caterer if you want food that looks appetizing and well-presented. This is definitely for budget brides who just need a meal to feed their guests, nothing more. read more

The Hometown Chef Catering Co. was highly recommended to me by a close friend, and from start to finish - completely blew me away! Stacy helped me plan the menu and kept everything organized for a cocktail party in my home. Trevor was our bartender for the evening. He was early, helped set up the bar, went above and beyond to serve fun cocktails and wine and my guests and I ADORED him! Ryan and Mason created an amazing cheese spread and several hors d'oeuvres that stopped guests in their tracks to not only marvel how pretty and fancy everything was, but to really stop and enjoy how delicious the Caramelized Pear with Gorgonzola Canapes and the Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Canapes were. About an hour into the evening, Ryan even surprised us with Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp. These guys made my party so much more fun! They were all charming, engaged in conversation with the guests, suggested the wine pairings with the cheeses, kept the kitchen island clean and just went completely above and beyond anything I expected. I felt like a celebrity. Once the party was over, they packed up all of the leftovers for me and cleaned the kitchen, which gave me more time to spend with my guests. I loved working with Hometown Chef! Their tasting was so delicious and all the staff were great in terms of sending me new invoices to keep up with all my changes, as well as just great communication. Highly recommend them and would use them for any other event. Appetizers are THE BOMB. They were really accommodating with us and our multiple wedding date changes as well as our food restrictions. Very flexible with the bar as well! Only critique I have were more so on the wedding day itself. My wedding day my planner had handed one of the staff that was attending my dessert table some containers for guests to package left over desserts. At the end of the night she found them on the floor under the table so unfortunately I had a lot of dessert go to waste. Honestly that's not really the company's fault as a whole but more so just the individual who was attending the table. Overall highly recommend. If you want a caterer that makes awesome food, has a top notch staff, and is very reasonably priced, book The Hometown Chef now! Seriously, they are amazing!! They catered and covered bar-tending services at our wedding and it was such a great experience. We had a serious downpour on our wedding day and even through the rain (and some flooding!) they served up delicious food and provided drinks for our guests until the end. They are also wonderful to work with in planning for your event. The staff is quick to respond and there's no such thing as a silly question. I can't say enough about how wonderful this company is. If you want to have a dry wedding but pay for alcohol, this is the catering company for you. My friends got married last night, reception at The Overlook. Everything started off great, then about an hour into it, the manager of the Hometown Chef shut down all the bars. The staff proceeded to breakdown the bar during the reception. This included all ice, water, soft drinks and of course, alcohol. The reason we were given is that there was "too much underage drinking". This was an adult only reception and the only children present were part of the family. Anyone underage with a drink was given the drink by their parent. The staff ID'ed everyone that ordered a drink and if someone of age forgot their ID, they were not served. The family spent the rest of the night trying to get it sorted out rather than enjoying the reception that they paid for and planned for a year. Fortunately the manager of The Overlook eventually provided water, but this catering company should be banned from the venue. They are the definition of your ultimate event nightmare. read more

This catering company is a nightmare. They ruined my sisters wedding reception which was held at The Overlook (beautiful venue). The manager shut down the bar at 9:30pm which was paid to be open til 11:30pm. As soon as the wedding party got there they carded all of us that were in the wedding and we did not have our IDs on us... because we were in the wedding why would we be carrying around our ID?? They would not serve to people who were clearly over the age of 21. They were even IDing 60 year olds and would not serve them if they did not have their ID. The poor groom/bride and our parents had to deal with the catering company for an hour and a half trying to get them to open it back up since they had already paid for it and wanted everyone to have fun. An hour and a half wasted when the bride and groom should have been having a stress free and fun night. Such a shame. DO NOT USE THIS CATERING COMPANY unless you want to deal with very unprofessional and rude employees. The grooms brother ordered a whiskey coke drink and the bartender replied with "we cannot serve liquor until 8" and so he asked what the time was and she instantly got snappy with him and yelled "WELL ITS NOT 8 I CAN TELL YOU THAT!" it was 7:58 when he ordered that drink... VERY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL!!!! I'm warning you now do NOT use them :)) read more
