OK, be forewarned! The food is delicious and the servings are generous! Every month our club meets for lunch at a local restaurant, we started after Covid as a way to support the community and so many places that were struggling. Four years on and we still enjoy doing it. This month was back to an old favorite, Fire Craft BBQ. Owner and head pit master, David Welch puts his heart and soul into the products his restaurant turns out. Not only that, there is a lot of variety and specialty dishes on the menu that most other BBQ places don't serve. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We had 14 in our group and were able to pull together some tables and chairs in the large additional dining room they added not long after opening.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The room is clean and well lit, big ceiling fans keep the air moving.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our group ordered a variety of things; I had the brisket hamburger with a side of the very southern yellow squash casserole. My wife had the chopped beef sandwich with fries and another friend had the chicken plate with beans and coleslaw. Others had their tocos and other sandwiches, one had the ribs. We were all full and happy when we finished. What 's nice is David came by to check on us and make sure everyone was happy, not many owners take that kind of personal attention. read more

Decided to finally check out Fire Craft BBQ after hearing good things about it. Oh man it was good! Went on a Thursday around 12 noon and the line was out the door but moved quickly. Went with a 3 meat combo and 2 sides so I could try a variety. $30 seemed a bit expensive but once I saw how much food it was I felt like the price was very fair. The fatty brisket is soooooo good. Melts in your mouth. Jalapeno sausage was delicious with a nice snap. Ribs were very good also. Pinto beans with pulled pork are insane good. Way more pulled pork with it than I was expecting so that was a nice bonus. Everyone in there was very friendly and checked on me a couple times making sure everything was good with my food. Flew into Houston from California and landed hungry! You cannot go to Texas and not have some good BBQ so loaded up Yelp as soon as I got off the plane and settled for Fire Craft BBQ.. The employees were helpful on answering my questions and I ended up ordering a brisket sandwich with mustard potato salad. In the dining area there was BBQ sauce which had a great flavor. The meal came out quickly and was what PERFECT smoked brisket should taste like. I was in Heaven! Often when you ask for lean you get a dry meat and this was not only very lean but also not dry whatsoever. It was nice and tender. The smoke flavor was perfect as well. I ate some plain and some with the BBQ sauce on it and honestly it was great both ways. Service was also great. An employee came by regularly to make sure we did not need anything and then a man who I'm pretty sure is the owner came by as well to make sure we were happy with our meal... which we were. Originally starting as a food truck (which is still operating), this first brick-n-mortar location of Fire Craft BBQ is located in Kingwood, TX, serving up Texas style Pit-smoked BBQ. I got carryout to bring back for dinner, and found the meat and sides to be good, though a bit expensive. Brisket (1 LB) - $36 - thickly cut, choice of moist, lean, or both. We got both. I had to try it immediately after we got it, to see if it had that OMG taste when the beef 'butter' is still dripping from the meat, when it is impossibly moist but still has great texture. This wasn't it. Wasn't sure if it had been pre-cut, or the brisket hadn't been kept warm properly, but parts of it was quite dry. I later ate some pieces closer to the vein of fat, and it was better. I did need a bit of bbq sauce as well. It was seasoned very well, and the quality of the beef (exclusively from Goodstock by Nolan Ryan) was obviously very good. Smoked Turkey (1/2 LB) - $14 - Very moist with good texture. Got 3 sides: Brussels Sprouts ($16 for 32oz) - it had been prepared well and tasted fine. I'm confident that it would have tasted amazing fresh out of the roasting oven, but it's hard to maintain that. Thus it tasted more like normal, steamed brussels sprouts. Dirty Rice ($16 for 32oz) - well made, with plenty of ground beef mixed in with the moist (almost wet) rice. Went really well with the brisket. Baked Beans ($16 for 32oz) - non-descript. No meat. Tasted fine, but not much better than what you can get from good canned baked beans. Was able to pay using Apple Pay, and the order was ready within 10 minutes. This was the MOST AMAZING BBQ I've EVER HAD!!! Everything is made from scratch every day other dry seasoning we met the owner. He gave us a sample of the smoked turkey, which was so ridiculously good. He gave us a piece of these chicken. Also, the brisket is so tender and I ordered the taco best thing I've ever had. The food is always good at Fire Craft but what happened to serving size? We spent $55.00 on meat only. We received 3 slices of brisket, 3 slices of turkey, 8 slices of sausage, and 4 ribs! We had just gone to Goode Company two days ago. Spent less and received 5 times the amount of food. We even had 4 sides and two drinks. Same thing at Gatlin's Barbecue. So much more meat and sides and drinks for less money. Maybe Fire Craft needs to train employees on correct service of meat or they are just holding back on customers. Usually in a restaurant, there are selections I like, some not so much. But I honestly can't say that about Fire Craft BBQ. Literally, everything I ordered was better than I expected! The brisket was perfect, the mustard potato salad was great, and the cole slaw was outstanding! Friends complimented their selections as well: Cowboy tri cut, pulled pork, cornbread, and baked beans. Visited this BBQ joint while in TX visiting friends. You order at the counter and they give you a number and they bring it to your table when its done. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a large dining area inside however it was really warm and sticky inside. It didn't feel like the AC was even on[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The iced tea and lemonade were really warm - even with a full cup of ice, my lemonade didn't actually get cold until I was done with it! As far as the food goes, we tried a few different meats and sides. The brisket was really good and so was the cheddar jalapeno sausage. I wasn't a fan of their ribs - very fatty. The sides were very generous portions! The mac and cheese was very rich and tasty and the jalapeno corn spoonbread was my favorite! I been trying to try this place out because of the hype but it's all really a hype. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The setup was bad. First we waited in line but kept having to move out the way because the only trash can there was right by where the line started.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had in mind that I wanted the turkey baked potato but when I tried a sample of the turkey I did not like it. It was the strangest cut I've ever seen, it had a fat layer around the turkey that was mushy and gross. Then I changed my mind that I wanted just a brisket potato but when I got to the counter the potatoes were all sold out. Then they offered the bowl but then told me the Mac and cheese were sold out. I really didn't think of a backup so they suggested the burger and I got that. To me that's super frustrating. I totally understand selling out, that's a good thing for the company but they really should figure out a way to let ppl know what's sold out before reaching the order counter. Ok, so the burger was actually really good, I honestly would go back just for that. The brisket itself was good, but you can tell it's not really wood smoked but more of a pellet. It was ok but I prefer the more woody taste. Now the sides... those were actually pretty fire. Loved the coleslaw, loved the beans and the potato salad. Well, I just gave up after holding on the phone for 10 minutes for Savannah to make an order for pick up! I had ordered over the phone before and it took 3 minutes at that time to take my order, however when I got there to pick up, I was asked to get in line to pay and then it seems that they went to put my order together because it took 10 minutes after I paid to get it! The food was actually good! Today, I was planning on clarifying those delay issues when placing my order, but in light of the fact that they didn't come back on the phone, I think I'll give them longer to get their stuff together. I've followed David Welch's career in the Kingwood area for years. Now that he was opened a BBQ restaurant, I couldn't wait to try it. I wasn't disappointed. The Brisket is perfectly cooked. It is moist, juicy, and very flavorful. I had a sliced sandwich and the bun was amazing too. There is a table where you can get your own serving of sauce if you need some more, but the meat is so good you really don't need it. David is a very versatile Chef, and likes to try new things. It was a pleasure of introducing my Canadian Chinese colleague to his first BBQ experience: sausage and brisket with sides of beans and watermelon salad. Wish I could have had the salad too, but his was the last serving. Tried ordering Jalapeño Corn spoon bread, but they'd run out. Instead, I had the terrible slaw. Was it supposed to have dressing? Kingwood is definitely fortunate to have a solid BBQ spot, this is a gem for sure. When you look at the area there aren't that many options to pick from especially BBQ. Walking in I already felt the warm welcome and smiles from the staff. The owner who was slicing the meats did a Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant fist pump when he saw me, meaning he was grateful that more customers are walking in. I decided to order the two meat plate which comes with two sides as well. I choose the pork ribs, moist brisket & for my sides I got the Mac & Cheese, dirty rice with chicken & red beans with sausage. The brisket was good, it was tendered but I would've like more moist versus lean. I'm not sure if they trimmed the fat/skin properly before smoking it but it was a lot on where the bark is and made the texture less appealing. Smoke rings were inconsistent as well. Not the best brisket I've had but I was content with it. The pork ribs were huge and meaty. I prefer a dry rub to seasoned the ribs but I didn't get much of it. The dirty rice with chicken was just okay but it was cooked to perfection & the chicken wasn't dry. The Mac and Cheese was simple but I could eat it all day. They say there's no such thing as too much cheese but I have to kindly disagree because sometimes too much isn't good either. It was the perfect amount of cheese and the Mac was creamy & al dente. The red beans with sausage was solid served with good quality sausage however, a little too watery for me. I prefer some white rice to be in the mix since it has beans and sausage. Flavor wise the beans had a BBQ taste to it, not my favorite but not bad either. Overall, the food is decent but the service was fast and friendly. They really made me feel welcomed. In summary, their food is good, but their pos system and the 3% fee is a joke. I surely hope they fix this soon. 2 signs by the cash registers state a 3% fee is charged for credit card transactions, but not for cash or debit. Only one problem, it's still charging you for debit, and most customers won't even notice this since the amount is pretty small. When I noticed they charged me after handing them my card and saying I'm paying "with debit", they continued to try to prove me wrong and they didn't seem to know that both of their signs say no fee for debit cards. I had to point this out to the cashier. The review shouldn't be about complaining or their stupid fees, but it is about my experience. They ended up refunding me about 52 cents after I felt like I wasted my time to point out a problem on their end. Word of advice, just come in with cash!! I ordered the loaded potato with moist brisket, then even asked me what type brisket I wanted. The brisket was pretty dry, and I sent a photo of it to my friend and he agreed the brisket looked on the dry side. I just went ahead and ate it anyway since I was hungry. The potato was really good. I added 1/4 lb of sausage. Sausage is $22/lb on the menu, not sure how mine came out to be $7.13. Like I said, watch the prices they charge you like a hawk. Sausage was OK, not great if you're a sausage snob like me. The main reason I want was to try their banana pudding. Turns out they only had a spiced apple & English toffee the day I came. The brisket has no smoke ring, to show that it was smoked; a brisket should have some pinkish color on each strip, and theirs has none. It was more like roasted/ oven baked brisket.The edges show little of the rub, that should be black and tasty, but were thin and fatty only.Pulled pork was good, baked potato with pork was good, but almost no sour cream. Mac n cheese was salty.The restaurant was very hot, and really not comfortable enough for us to continue to sit there and eat ,so we took the baked potato home to eat later in the air-conditioning. I dined here for lunch a week ago while in the area. The restaurant has a small indoor dining area along with outdoor seating too. Parking space was plentiful and inside it's a counter service restaurant. Now let's take a math test. I wanted to try their 1/2 chicken ($9.50) and a couple of side dishes that are listed for $5 each. That total would have been $19.50 for the food. I noticed on the menu board that they offered a 1 meat (1/3 lb.) combo for $20. I enquired if that applied to chicken and was told (by the counter employee and a manager behind her) that it could but I wouldn't get a 1/2 chicken. It would be less. If I wanted the 1/2, I could get the 2 meat combo for $24 they said. Now why would I want to do that? Spend $24 when I could order the same meal a la carte for $19.50??? Go figure! Anyway I ordered the 1/2 chicken with sides of baked beans and jalapeño corn spoon bread which is their most popular side dish. As the counter server was ringing up my order I noticed that each item had a surcharge added to it. I asked and was then told that cc customers are charged an extra 3%. They showed me some signage that said this but It wasn't that noticeable. I hate it when businesses do that. Most people pay with credit cards so just reflect that 3% in your pricing. I believe most customers don't even notice the up charge and don't say anything. Businesses like this one use it as a sly way of increasing revenues. We live in a electronic age where cash isn't used as much plus it's dirty and a theft magnet. With an iced tea, tax and the cc surcharge my total cost was $24.43. I realize that everything is more expensive nowadays but in my life I have never paid that much for a 1/2 chicken, 2 sides and a tea. The culprits were the expensive $5 side dishes and the cc fee. Sides are now $5? Wow! My last complaint was the ice bucket situation. Here if you want ice in your drink they have a bucket with a lid on it with a scoop. You open the lid, reach inside the bucket to pick up the scoop and then shovel away returning the scoop in the bucket and closing the lid when done. I thought that kind of system went away with Covid. How unsanitary! I think my hands were clean reaching in for the scoop. Probably everyone else does too...... The food was delicious. The bird was flavorful and juicy. The baked beans had a rich taste that was also flavorful and that jalapeño corn spoon bread is an incredible take on a very moist cornbread type of food that makes me understand why it's so popular. No doubt about it that the food here is very good. It was a quality meal. To me it was an easy 4 score and possibly with a return visit to try other menu items I could give it a 5. There probably won't be a return visit for me. Get rid of the cc fee, get rid of the ice bucket and shave a little off of the side dish price. I would give a 2 score but will give a 3 instead because they have a really good product. I hope the owner reads this and takes the constructive criticism to heart.
