Ask the Community - The Inside Voice

What are the ages for the kids classes? Are they private or in a group setting?

Hi Viviana, our current offerings are all private. We take all ages starting at around 3 and going up from there!

What singing classes do you have for adults and in a group setting?

Hi Amy! We don't currently have any group classes, but we offer private voice lessons (both in person and online) to adults, as well as a video exchange service between the student and private teacher. We also have laid-back showcases for just our…

Not only has Ben helped me build up singing confidence, he's helped improve my vocal range and technique. He is able to put complex topics and terms in language that is easily understandable for someone like myself with NO music background prior to enrolling. I have so much fun learning and never feel judged or embarrassed which is incredibly important. My favorite part of our sessions is when he turns my favorite songs into a piano-only or guitar-only piece and helps me perform them. I have been going to In Tune for a month and I am so excited and proud of my progress. I cannot wait to see how far I can go with In Tune's help!

He's been teaching our adult family member since before the pandemic; at no time do we ever feel like anything other than equals in a collaborative environment. The studio itself is definitely a well-cared-for, inviting space. You can flex your performance muscle without cramping your style. There's a decent sized parking area, so no worries about where to find a space on the street, as well as a central location on the bus route if you need public transportation. I discovered McCormick a year ago when I found a beginner's open jam session on Meetup. At that…read moretime I had been learning bass for about 5 years on my own through YouTube tutorials and tabs. It used to take me several weeks just to learn one whole song at tempo. Improvisation skills were at zero. Plus, I didn't know anyone else who played an instrument, so I wasn't making much progress. The two times I had previously attempted joining a random open jam, I was completely lost and frustrated. But then I attended that first McCormick jam session... What I love about the open jams is that it's run by an instructor, so they'll often suggest easier songs and run through the chords on a whiteboard before starting. The people that attend are welcoming and friendly for all skill levels, and it's nice to see the same faces come back each month. Beginner/intermediate players get a chance to play along to easier songs, but there's also a chance for more advanced players to improvise and solo. I wound up having so much fun that first time, that I signed up for private lessons the week after, and have been going to the monthly jam sessions ever since. If you take private lessons, you can also sign up to join a student band that practices once a week to perform at concerts 4x a year. For beginners/intermediate who think they're not good enough to join a band, or if none of your friends are musically inclined, this is PERFECT. No matter who much you practice by yourself and can play along to a recording at home, it doesn't beat playing live in a group. Private lessons + band practice + monthly jams have seriously leveled up my skills in the past year. Now, I can learn a song well enough to survive a jam session with only a couple run throughs beforehand if I've never heard it before. I can survive a 12 bar blues jam without any prep. Plus I've also connected with a couple people during the jam sessions, and am now learning 3-4 new songs each week! Also, shout out to Jules who's helped me learn songs much faster by simplifying basslines that I thought were too hard to play, and getting me to work more on listening and improvisation instead of relying 100% on tabs. He's an excellent and encouraging teacher, and I've picked up tons of tips and advice in the past year. Really happy I found McCormick! I've always loved playing an instrument, but it's 100x more fun if you get to play with other people.

She is simply the best! I feel incredibly lucky to have met Patricia and begun my singing journey with her. I've been a student at Studio Shanks since 2018, when I was fresh out of college and looking for a voice teacher who could earnestly teach me how to sing. At the time, there were flashy online ads for folks that could "make you a superstar" and all of it felt so loud and nothing seemed to fit. At one point Patricia returned my call. Immediately I knew that she was the right teacher for me. It was obvious that she is not just naturally fun and easygoing, but also a true technician when it comes to the craft of singing. It's been a few years since we began working together. I've discovered that singing is something that can be learned at any age. It requires hard work, but it can be done. Luckily, Patricia is entirely dedicated to the growth and success of her students. Knowing this makes it much easier to bring my own effort during and between classes. I am honestly amazed at how, despite having worked with many respected luminaries in the field, Patricia remains humble and always with a sense of humor that puts me at ease. She is everything that comprises a professional artist and educator. What I love most is that she cuts through the noise and focuses on pure foundations. That means that she is able to work with vocalists ranging from the most contemporary pop styles to opera to musical theatre and beyond. All kinds of singing require the same basic knowledge of healthy and safe vocal techniques. At Studio Shanks, everything counts and everything matters. Thank you so much, Patricia!

Thank you very much for communicating. I would love to take singing lessons with you.read more

They have bar area on each floor with a few snacks options. I didn't get anything but expect theater pricing - on the high side. Workers here are very friendly and willing to help answer any questions you may have. The theater itself is very modern and nice inside. We sat far back but had no problem seeing or hearing the show. The acoustics were very good. Only issue for us was getting out - as there seemed to be only one area to get out and it would bottleneck after the show. But other than that, we had a great experience watching a musical here.

My problem is with the service here. I came here on Friday, August 21st. The traffic attendants directed us to walk one way in order to get to the theater. My mom and I then went that one way. When we got to the entrance of the theater, before the security check, one of the female valet/parking/rideshare directors berated both me and my mom saying we couldn't come this way. My mom apologized and she continued to yell at us. We were going through security and more people were going through that same way and nothing was said to them. It put a bad taste in our mouth. Then, when we entered the theater, we went to the merchandise booth, The people working the booth mentioned that there would be more shirts upstairs, so upstairs we went. We went directly upstairs, and we asked the attendants upstairs if there was more merchandise somewhere in the theater. They looked at us like we were stupid and said it's only downstairs, until one of them finally said there might be some more in the orchestra floor. Our saving grace was the worker at the merchandise booth up there. She was super sweet! It really put a bad taste in both my mom and my mouth. I really love this theater, way more than Pantages, but with workers like that, it just put a dulled the whole experience. The best part about the day spent here was the spectacular performance of Phantom of the Opera.
