Not only has Ben helped me build up singing confidence, he's helped improve my vocal range and technique. He is able to put complex topics and terms in language that is easily understandable for someone like myself with NO music background prior to enrolling. I have so much fun learning and never feel judged or embarrassed which is incredibly important. My favorite part of our sessions is when he turns my favorite songs into a piano-only or guitar-only piece and helps me perform them. I have been going to In Tune for a month and I am so excited and proud of my progress. I cannot wait to see how far I can go with In Tune's help!

He has the ability to connect with both children and adults, which can be a rare quality. He's been teaching our adult family member since before the pandemic; at no time do we ever feel like anything other than equals in a collaborative environment. The studio itself is definitely a well-cared-for, inviting space. You can flex your performance muscle without cramping your style. There's a decent sized parking area, so no worries about where to find a space on the street, as well as a central location on the bus route if you need public transportation. Costs are reasonable and really, you're getting a steal for all of Ben's experience, education, and knowledge. What are you waiting for? Go see him and change your life for the better.

She is simply the best! I feel incredibly lucky to have met Patricia and begun my singing journey with her. I've been a student at Studio Shanks since 2018, when I was fresh out of college and looking for a voice teacher who could earnestly teach me how to sing. At the time, there were flashy online ads for folks that could "make you a superstar" and all of it felt so loud and nothing seemed to fit. At one point Patricia returned my call. Immediately I knew that she was the right teacher for me. It was obvious that she is not just naturally fun and easygoing, but also a true technician when it comes to the craft of singing. It's been a few years since we began working together. I've discovered that singing is something that can be learned at any age. It requires hard work, but it can be done. Luckily, Patricia is entirely dedicated to the growth and success of her students. Knowing this makes it much easier to bring my own effort during and between classes. I am honestly amazed at how, despite having worked with many respected luminaries in the field, Patricia remains humble and always with a sense of humor that puts me at ease. She is everything that comprises a professional artist and educator. What I love most is that she cuts through the noise and focuses on pure foundations. That means that she is able to work with vocalists ranging from the most contemporary pop styles to opera to musical theatre and beyond. All kinds of singing require the same basic knowledge of healthy and safe vocal techniques. At Studio Shanks, everything counts and everything matters. Thank you so much, Patricia!

I recently moved from Los Angeles to Orange County and had no clue where to go to get my new Gibson…read moreHummingbird set up. After some searching, I found Doc on Yelp, and let me tell you--it was the best decision I could've made for my guitar. At first, I just wanted a strap button installed. From the moment I walked into the shop, I knew I was in the right place. Doc's wife greeted me warmly, and the shop itself was incredible--guitars everywhere, an atmosphere buzzing with creativity. Walking in felt like stepping into a musician's dream. Then I met Doc. What an absolute legend! He didn't even charge me for adding the strap button. Instead, he spent about 30 minutes walking me through my guitar's specs, the materials it's made of, and a ton of other details I never knew. His passion and knowledge about guitars left me completely confident that he was the guy to do my full setup. The turnaround? Insanely fast--just one week. For comparison, I once took an older guitar to McCabe's in Santa Monica, and it took nearly three months. Never again. Doc doesn't just work on your guitar; he treats it like it's his own, ensuring it plays at its absolute best. I'm literally writing this right after picking up my Hummingbird, and I couldn't be happier. I'm officially a Doc client for life! If you need someone who truly knows guitars and cares about quality, look no further.

Took my brand new guitar to Doc for a set-up (I always take my new guitars in for a set up to dial…read morethem in) and he suggested leveling the frets. It seemed odd since it was a brand new guitar but I trusted that if he said they needed leveling then they needed leveling. I was shocked when I picked up my guitar to find that my medium jumbo frets had been ground down to nubs (see the pic). He totally butchered my the guitar and now it's absolutely awful to play. When I brought up the terrible fret job to Doc his suggestion was to let him scallop the fretboard so the frets would seem higher (!!!). Needless to say I won't be doing that nor will I ever again entrust him with any of my instruments. Oh yeah, he also put a chip in the back of the guitar by the control plate. Anyway, for now I'm gonna have to start saving up to have a total refret done by a luthier who I can trust.
