Just wanted to drop a note about the job shop. I've been a client of theirs for several years and I have to say that they are a very professional team. Being out of the job flow due to being a stay at home dad, I felt there is an appropriate time to do small job opportunities that will work in my schedule. I went to them open about the possibility of any sort of job. I even told them my minimum amount per hour. They never called me except once in a desperate attempt one morning when I was already en route with another job from another agency [Thanks again Premier staffing!]. They were pretty poor with communication after the initial interview even though I called/emailed regularly to check the status of possible gigs. I do give them an extra star for having a dog [even a cranky one that tried to bite me] in the office & also for asking me what kind of environment I'd prefer to work in. read more

This place really made me dislike employment agencies. First of all they are always posting jobs on craigslist and when you send your resume they never call. I finally gave them a call and they set up a time and date to go see them. The guy I spoke to was super unproffessional..he said he was very busy and he had jury duty (wtf?) when I asked him if we could do another time or day or even with another recruiter because my daughter had a strand of the flu and I needed to make sure she was ok (she was less than 6mos at the time) he told me he didn't care and if I didn't make it then I could no longer get work with them. Seriously!! Ultimately I did not go and ended up going through another company. Just be careful with them because they are no good! read more

I was contacted by someone named JeanMarie over the phone to set up an interview She said she had a couple of positions that matched my skills. When I asked her what the positions were, she said she would be able to give me a better idea after interviewing me in person so, I set up an Appointment for the very next day. When I met with JeanMaria, the positions were suddenly filled which I seemed was odd so I Interviewed and she then told me, that they would let me know if ::Any:: positions came up. So, anotherwards there was no position and I took BART over to San Francisco for a 15 minute interview with no jobs available for me. Very disappointing. read more

I was highly disappointed with a recent experience with Job Shop. The current company I work for has used this firm in the past year and we were sent a wonderful contractor who highly recommended Jojo for future staffing needs. I then recommended Job Shop to a very close friend (college graduate with 2-3 years of office experience) who was looking to get into the SF job market after being laid off. She received a call from Jean Marie who in my 10 plus years of workforce experience, by far had the worst professional recruiter response! I was appalled because these were her responses to my friend: "You are not a good fit because you lack experience." "I would just continue to knock on doors until someone answers." Really? This is the kind of response you send? NO response would have been better. A response like the "Knocking on Doors" routine is not only unprofessional but very discouraging for someone who is looking for a job in this competitive market. I'm very sad that we didn't get connected with Jojo because reviews on here say he is amazing. I have worked with different agencies and never in my life have I heard such an unprofessional response by a recruiter. I think you need to work on your people and customer service skills. read more

I have been with this agency for over two years, when I was laid off from a non-profit I had worked at. I fortunately found a permanent job on my own several days after I signed up. After losing that job a year later, I continued seeking and finding employment on my own until this past July. I went back to the Job Shop, interviewed again, filled out the forms, and turned over my updated resume. I didn't hear back from them for weeks, until finally they asked if I could come in and stuff envelopes for them. I agreed, and went in that week for two days, to stuff said envelopes, and got paid. Over the next few months, they would call me occasionally at 10 AM and ask if I could make it to such and such places in 20 minutes for a few hours of work at $11-$12/hour. This wasn't the temping I was thinking of when I signed up with them. I declined all of these positions because they were too short of notice and not enough money. I was getting rather annoyed. Where were the real jobs? Were the hiding somewhere? Why am I doing all the work in my job search if an agency is supposed to be helping me?? I ended up getting assigned to another 2-day gig (the entire gig lasted three days, and one would be assigned to two in a row, of the three days) at a company in SOMA, which they described would require skills in digital video and film making, to which I was privy. I went to a training session, and it turned out to be nothing of the sort. Ok, well that's fine, I would be getting two full days of work. I unfortunately had an extremely bad scheduling issue that required me to be absent for one of the days. I explained to Warren the situation--which was very excusable--and asked if I could rearrange the days I was scheduled (i.e. work day one, skip days two, work day three). He said he would talk to the client and find out. I didn't hear back from him. Its been radio silence ever since. Although everyone there is very nice, they have thoroughly disappointed me. I expected a lot more! There seems to be tons of jobs that would be right up my alley, posted on their web site, but why am I only getting calls for little jobs where I would only end up with $50 in my pocket? I have gotten more response on my own, from permanent positions, than I have ever received from the Job Shop. read more

Let me clarify that I am an entry level job person. Meaning I want Administrative work but need to get my feet wet. They said no problem. Was contacted about a job, interviewed for it and told that they would get back to me with a start date. I was excited. A week went by and I called to see if they had heard anything. I was told that the position was never a Go and that I did not, in fact, have a job. I knew I hadn't imagined it and called them on it. They told me the position went to someone else. I was them called two weeks later saying the other person did not work out and if I would still like to be considered for it. I replied Yes. But, two hours later it had again gone to someone else. When I was looking for a temp to hire position back in early 2005, I was given a temp-to-hire position at a medical records office for a Sutter Health Facility. Unfortunately, I was unaware that my qualifications did not meet the needs of what or who they were looking for. I never blamed Sutter Health for not choosing me, and I still don't to this very day because they enlisted the help from The Job Shop to find a suitable candidate for the position for one of their offices. To add more fuel to the fire, The Job Shop sent in another candidate who had all of the right qualifications to replace me, without my knowledge. I never received a phone call or an e-mail from any of the employees at the temp agency to inform me that I was going to be replaced. It was the manager of the work site who filled me in on what was going on. She always spoke to me in a very kind, yet professional manner, and gently broke the news to me. Although it's never comforting for someone to tell you that you are not the right candidate for any position, I never held it against her; I still don't. It is in my opinion that The Job Shop is much more interested in collecting payments from work sites, than placing the right people in permanent jobs. I feel sorry for any employment site that has to undergo so many odds and ends when looking for candidates applying towards temp-to-hire positions, let alone the poor individuals who struggle on a day by day basis to find a job. If you don't mind being used, or if you're just looking for something to do with your life after retirement, I'd say to give it a go. However, if you're seriously looking for a permanent job, you're better off doing your own research. I did MY OWN research, I managed to find a full time position without any assistance from them, and I've been at my current job for over seven years. I'd say that speaks for itself. read more

Unfortunate to give such a place a bad rating. Finding people jobs is truly a noble profession but in this such circumstance they merely raised my hopes and wasted my time. I went there about 9 months ago looking for work. I took a series of tests to find my proficiency in things like word and excel. Exciting stuff. I'm a professional video editor so I don't really think I need to be tested in areas computer-related but they thought differently. I was there for hours. Not one call. Not one single call. I called them, they never called back. I asked to speak with people, they denied me and said they'd call me back. Never happened. Not once. When you need a job you kind of depend upon people getting back to you, and these guys never did, except last week. I finally got a call back, last week, asking if I was still looking for work. They returned my phone call 9 months later. All I could do was laugh. if I still didn't have a job I probably would have starved to death. Jo Jo & Michelle are alright with me; this is another agency that kept me working thru a couple of different layoffs. They take the time to actually get to know your likes/dislikes, & work toward a placement (be it temporary or permanent) that actually FITS you & your needs. Looking for temp work? Bug 'em & make sure that you're on their minds...they do have other folks besides you that make sure to do just that, & that's who gets called 1st. The Job Shop is AMAZING!! Came home for an extended vacay and subsequently began looking for temp agencies. Other agencies had ridiculously drawn-out hiring processes (one was as long as a month). I went in for an interview and was placed in a position within the week. Every company I have worked for has been awesome and Warren and JoJo are extremely friendly, helpful and professional. First let me say, I LOVE THE JOB SHOP! They were fantastic from the day I walked in to the day I finally gave into becoming a permanent employee and got placed at an insurance brokerage, years later. They stayed in contact, bugged me all the time for work, even when I had to say no multiple times. There were times I said, "I don't feel comfortable with that job." That didn't count against me, reason being, I was still flexible, willing to do most things and kept my phone on me at all times. I was ready to answer their call. I know that doesn't sound like the best way to live but if you want to get Temp work, that is inherently sporadic, then one must be ready to answer the random and sporadic calls that come your way. I always experienced a high level of respect from everyone there. I wasn't just cattle to send out, I was a respected employee and asset to The Job Shop. Yes it is true, The Job Shop could afford to pay a dollar or so more in these tough times. BUT! And this is a BIG BUT! They tend to call more often and put more of an effort forth; they don't just make you a number. That takes a lot of time and energy. YOU HAVE NO IDEA! I'm in a unique position because not only was I a temp for The Job Shop (which came highly recommended to me by another friend) but I eventually became Job Shop receptionist, file clerk, gofer and go to guy for a couple of years (really I weaseled my way in because I thought, "Out of all of the places I've worked for The Job Shop, the place I loved the most was THE JOB SHOP!" ) I saw every person that came in through that door and registered. Every person that got work. Didn't get work. Tried to get work. Pestered to get work. And persevered and got work in the end. I'm going to let out a few secrets of The Job Shop to help many have a better understanding. (Sorry, Job Shop.) The Job Shop (like every other agency in the world) is NOT there to get YOU a job. I know that sounds bad but just follow me. The Job Shop's job (like most other agencies in the world) is to find the Client a good employee. Your job as the Candidate IS TO BE THAT GOOD EMPLOYEE. In fact that's your job wherever you go for work. Sorry if that's too "Corporate" in favoring "The Man" but until one decides to create their own business and their own work where they get to be their own boss....that's the way it is. This is what The Job Shop does at first: They see every application. Many others don't do that. They get back to everyone. Many others don't do that. They interview everyone. Many others don't do that. They give everyone an even chance from the beginning. Many others don't do that. But, after that, it's all on you: The Candidate. Were you a lousy interview? Do you have a weird schedule? "I only want to work from 1-5pm Wed -Fri and all day Saturday." Most companies don't have work to accommodate a Temp's schedule. They have work to accommodate their own schedules. Did you say something like, "I don't want to answer phones." Or "I don't want to file all day long." That eliminates most of the Temp work in the world. Remember, The Job Shop is still a small office and you're not the only person they saw that day. They have an extremely tough job to get a handle on. Only those Candidates that make it easy to fill those jobs that come in, will get those jobs. Sometimes those jobs come in at the last minute. And, if they called you at the last minute consider it flattering. They thought of you first. Another tip: Be the first to answer the phone. They are calling a sweep of people at the top of their list or who they believe to be a perfect fit to the job. Whoever answers or calls back first and say's YES gets the job. Another thing to consider is that they promise both you the Candidate and the Client that they are going to find a good match. People who REALLY don't want to work in a stuffy suit and tie environment probably aren't going to get asked to do that....but if it's only for a week's worth of work, the smart ones (if asked) will say YES, anyway. To some that might sound like selling out but...well...you're a temp, beggars can't be choosers. If you're looking for a specific kind of job and are having a hard time finding it because no one seems to be hiring, then you need to realize that: no one is hiring for the job you want. A job placement agency isn't going to have a better time finding it for you. This means you're going to have to be open to other jobs, even the ones you don't want. And, in the end, if you're having bad luck with The Job Shop and feel like you've gotten better work from someplace else; go someplace! It's a big city with lots of agencies. Why sit around and get mad at one. We're all frustrated. We're all not paying our bills on time. But, if you have the time to type up a review because you don't have a job...maybe you should be going out and getting a job. read more

My experience with the Job Shop exceeded all my expectations. They were fast, cordial, and I felt 100% taken care of. I couldn't be more happy with their service and Jojo, my recruiter. They found me a great opportunity. I've recommended them to all my friends and if I ever decide to switch jobs in the future, they will be the first people I call. My experience was this: I got forwarded their monthly newsletter with jobs that were available, and I sent them my resumé. I received a response within two days and was sent a questionnaire. I filled that out, sent it in, and got a face to face meeting within the same week. I immediately started receiving calls for temp work while they looked for a permanent position for me. Then Jojo called me about a position that had opened at one of the top architecture firms in the country. I interviewed and was immediately accepted on a temp to hire basis. The whole process, from submitting my resumé to getting paid for a job, took 3 - 4 weeks, which in this job market usually represents the time for a potential employer to respond to a cover letter and resumé submission (in my experience). After submitting resumes and cover letters for a few weeks, I was shocked at the speed of the Job Shop service. I temped for 7 weeks at a pre-determined hourly rate that I was happy with and then the firm gave me an offer letter. The offer also exceeded my expectations, and after checking in with Jojo, I quickly accepted it. I'm now pleased to say I have a full time position at one of the top firms in the U.S. and definitely one of the top ten best places to work in San Francisco. I signed up with several temp agencies in the San Francisco area, but The Job Shop was the only agency finding me concurrent temp and temp to hire work. There wasn't a week where I wasn't connected with an employer or given an opportunity to work. Found myself unemployed and decided I really wanted to work with them since I had a nice experience with them a few years back (very attentive, called me about jobs, etc) They were a big let down this time around. Sadly, I got the typical larger agency "colder" treatment this time, via the recruiter to whom I'd been assigned.. I was initially told that I'd signed up again at the right time, business was starting to boom, yadda yadda, and that there were even a couple of specific positions I d be great for. My resume was fantastic and that my experience was so marketable (which it is). But all of that ended up being patronizing drivel, of course. I'd check in regularly and limited my email communication. However, if I had questions, the recruiter's replies sometimes ignored them or went around my questions. Then I'd get an attitude if I followed up to get that answer! The last straw was when I got a mini-lecture from the recruiter on how temp agencies work, just because I asked (a month later, I might add) about status of those specific positions they mentioned and the supposed influx of work they claimed to be experiencing. I saw that as an attempt to deflect their deficiencies onto me. Bad...assuming I'm ignorant about matters I already know much about, having worked with many other agencies in the past. PLUS my best friend used to run one! Spare me the lecture, please! Said recruiter actually told me (in not so many words) to try other agencies to maximize my exposure (ie. Take your business elsewhere) NO DUH! As if I'd really put all my eggs into their chintzy little temp agency basket. But I also found it extremely bad business to tell clients to go to their competitors. That's what confirmed that the attitude I sensed all along was personal. (Did I say something wrong at the initial meeting??) There are few other things I don't feel like getting into but suffice it to say, other things were revealed that told me I could've gotten *something* had the recruiter actually wanted to help I had sincerely hoped to work with them specifically because of how they promote themselves as "being different from the rest". But that notion was killed. Like other agencies, if they don't like you, they don't like you...and that's that. They get 2 stars because another rep there was always nice to me and their office is very cute. read more

[UPDATE] Sept 2012 I've been with Jobshop now for a horribly long time. They are a smaller agency but they have always managed to keep me working. If you need something to keep you going, this is the place to visit. Dec 2008 Within two weeks I was placed in a position in downtown. It wasn't a stellar position but as temp positions go it was fairly plush. However, unlike any other temp agencies I have ever worked for, the job shop held a "Interview Technique Workshop". At first I was stand offish, but I found out it was free. What?!? You say, a free something, anything? Yes, indeed they held a quality, informative, and quite helpful seminar at a convenient time and offered it at no charge to their temporary employees. Now, I realize that for most of us, it is finding the position that we are all really after. And in fact this company openly encourages you to follow up with other companies outside of their reach. But when it comes to the personal touch, as I believe I needed when I first entered the job market, they give it to you, and I'm certain they place many seekers into meaningful permanent positions. They get the full 5 star treatment for going out of their way to make sure YOU the seeker is ready for the job market. read more

Huh... I don't know what happened with the previous reviewers but here's how it worked for me: I emailed them my resume. Two days later, I get a call to come in for an interview and testing. I go in, fall in love with their cute little dog, do testing, and meet with Michelle. She's cool, seemed to actually care. She sent me over to Jojo the perm position guy so I could interview with him. He's cool too. I explain to everyone I talk to that I'm available IMMEDIATELY and need to make rent. "Please, give me something!" Okay, I wasn't begging quite like that but I was desperate and they knew it. The next freaking day? Michelle calls me with a temp assignment. Seriously?! The next morning?! That was sooner than I expected. I missed out, though, because I was interviewing with another agency at the time. Then the next day, despite me being a complete flake when I told them I'd do anything immediately, Michelle calls me again! With a one-week assignment! (I'm writing this review from the job.) The Job Shop totally rocks, IMO. I'm getting $12 which isn't great but isn't horrible. The Job Shop is friendly and understanding. When I called Michelle about having to schedule an interview while I worked the temp gig she assigned me, she was cool with talking to the people and getting me an extended lunch hour. I was with the Job Shop from August '08 through March '10, and have recommended them to every smart, competent, inexplicably unemployed person I know. Warren was my main contact, and have me my first assignment. He called to check in on me, and really took note of my strengths and weaknesses, as well as what kind of work environments I was best suited to. When JoJo had a temp-to-perm opening at an architecture firm, he and Warren thought of me. They submitted my resume, I interviewed, and I started the next day. It was the most perfect fit imaginable, and I know that I wouldn't have had a chance if I hadn't worked with the Job Shop all that time. Job Searching = HELL Most of us have been there at one time or another. Looking for a good job can be difficult and depressing. It was for me until The Job Shop was recommended to me by a friend. I called their office to inquire about their services, and was asked to send an email to Jojo. I heard back from him a few days later, and he had me fill out some paperwork to return by email. After reviewing my background and resume, he then had me come into the office for an interview and to take some computer skills tests. I'm not sure if this is typical, or if I was just in the right place at the right time, but he was able to place me in a "temp-to-hire" job in my field starting the very next day. In a "temp-to-hire" position, the employer is checking you out as a potential employee, and vice-versa. As someone who had never temped before, there were times when I wasn't sure if things were working out, and Jojo was always happily willing and able to talk to me about what was going on, and encourage me to keep doing my best. After about a month, the company offered me the job, and I've now been employed for almost two months. Even if Job Shop is not able to place all candidates as quickly as they did me, their list of available jobs is really solid and encouraging. (I watched it quite a bit while going through the process with them.) I'm certain that if the job I was placed in hadn't worked out, they would have found something that did fit me. **04/12/08** Well I guess I'm going to resort to CraigsList & apply with another agency as back up. My recruiter called and said there is still no other jobs that are fit for me. I give them credit for being honest with me and letting me know where I stand. It may be a couple of weeks til my recruiter can get me something. Therefore, my rating remains 3 Stars. **04/09/08** So I still havent heard from my recruiter. I decided to email my recruiter. The recruiter emailed back & said that they havent found anything fit for me. I think I'm better off using CraigsList to find my own, but I'll see..I have until Friday to give a rating for this employment agency. I am very pleased with this agency. My preference is to 'just temp' and they are okay with that as well as the time limitations I have. Have been sent to some very nice buildings for work and am enjoying the experience. The Job Shop seems to also have a good relationship with their clients and that goes a long way to more jobs for those of us wanting work. The other big plus is they do not have a problem working with seniors - I know I am one! I appreciate that. I will stick with agency as long as I am able. read more

Jorge is the worst recruiter I have ever worked with. I came in for an an interview, meet and greet, gave him my resume. At first, everything went well. I was thinking he would find me something long or short term, that would match my resume. A month later, he sends me an email for a job at Target. Not even a retail position but to sit around and from time to time walk around the store. The second assignment this fool offered me was a coat collector. He was always offering me the jobs that consist labor. For a while, I really thought it was because I'm of Hispanic decent. Always offering me the garbage jobs that no one else wanted. I have pride and a decent educational background. How dare you Jorge!! Especially, coming from the same background, treating me like I'm less than. I have a great background experience working in a corporate environment and a office setting. I was extremely upset Jorge would even thought of offering me these assignments. I was very specific what type of work and background I was interested in and wanted. I find this place horrible and so unprofessional. It was literally a waste of my time. Get rid of Jorge, he's a waste. Start hiring better recruiters who actually care about their clients and their well being! read more
