Yesterday was my very first time visiting this store. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome and was helped anytime I needed anything throughout my time shopping (which was over an hour). I immediately felt like I was part of the store. The customer service was fantastic. The store itself had everything a comic book fan could ever need - anything from the newest comics, to older paperbacks, lots of toys & collectibles to cards games, and tons of bins full of back-issues. I was blown away by how much they kept in stock. After talking with the owners and learning more about their history and knowledge of the comic industry, it's clear that they truly put their customers first and are always willing to go out of the their way to make sure you've got the toys and comic books that you need. Whether you live 2 hours away or 2 minutes down the street, I highly recommend taking a trip to the Joker's Child and experiencing all of this for yourself. You will not be disappointed! read more

Joker's Child has a great inventory. The floor employees are very friendly and go out of their way to help you. Comics are very well organized. The store is not a fun place to shape. There are several reasons why I would recommend another store like Zapp Comics or anywhere really. Several times I've been in the store and one or the owners berates and talks down to her employees in front of customers. It's really unpleasant to watch and is the main reason I don't shop there more often. The employees work very hard and the store is lucky to have them. They deserve more than being spoken to in a demeaning way. My advice to the managers try saying thank you more. The store has a lot of strange rules. The clerks have to put the comics in bags for you. The cashier and the clerk physically put hands in the books during checkout. Zapp comics lets you grab your bags and boards, treat your comics well, and pay for them at the end. It's a great system. There is an incentive reward program. Ok that's great. You get joker bucks when a certain amount is spent. When you check out and use them, you get an earful on how you should trade in smaller denominations of joker bucks to make it easier for the store. Not fun. The store is also dimly lit and has a depressing overall atmosphere. read more

I went here because it was close to my work. To check out they had this weird system where you had to hand your books to some teenager that wasn't even behind the counter. He would count the number of books, and announce to the woman/ owner at the register "9 books." She would take them shuffle them so they were in price order. She would then punch the quantities into a 40-50 year old cash register. Hysterically, on three different occasions, they over charged me by like 2 or three books. The first time this happened, I didn't realize it until after she had swiped my car. When I said "hey you overcharged me," she offered me Joker Bucks that could only be spent in the store... Of course I said "um. no. Give me my money." She was insanely rude, claiming it was an honest mistake and I should be more understanding. This happened on two other occasions. If you go to this store pay attention to what they ring up. Bonus hilarious story. The Owners claim to Own the cover to the Preacher #1. That gave me a huge laugh. read more

One of the area's premier comic book shops. Really helpful staff and tons & tons of merch. I particularly love looking through all the 90s products that I'm fond of. Once in a while I'll get a couple pieces of nostalgia for the sake of reminiscing. But really, there aren't many places that have a wide assortment of comic books ranging from new releases, to variants, to back issues. So many vintage books and rarities that you can get sucked in the store for hours. There's also a great selection of action figures, busts, and statues so be sure to check that out! One time when I was browsing, I overheard someone ask for help as they were shopping for a birthday present for a friend. The staff member helping them was so knowledgeable and gave some great suggestions. That alone should speak volumes! read more

I used to go here in high school, when it was up and across the street in a 600-square-foot room that is now a Carvel. In my memory, that old shop was the size of the new one, which is three or four times bigger. The new shop (and by "new", I mean, now, decades old) has a beautiful, long wall of new comics--even if you don't give a second thought to comics, the sheer color and graphics of the display is lovely. They've also got a deep selection of back issues, and all sorts of figurines and comics-related stuff. I came in looking for a specific graphic novel, they had it, walked me to it. I really like Joker's Child, they have a fun atmosphere and a friendly staff. The store is also very spacious, many comic book stores feel like you're walking into a colorful closet. My only complaint about Joker's Child, is that the back issues are a tad on the expensive side compared to other stores. I like to purchase about half new comics and half back issues when I visit a store, so it's an important issue for me. Can't say enough amazing things about The Jokers Child! The entire staff are friendly, knowledgable, and incredibly warm -- they treat new customers as if they were their regulars and they carry a huge selection of comics from various major and indie publishing companies. Great novelty selection and always up to date issues of trades and back issues. We started coming here because we heard rave reviews from our other friends who've been coming here for years, and we decided to check it out one day. We refuse to go anywhere else. We live about 30 mins away in North Bergen, and even though we could easily go to a closer place (a much less friendly and less reputable comic book shop which will be "nameless") we always make the trek out to Fairlawn to give our business to Karen and her crew because every visit is a such a pleasant experience that can't be beat. Sometimes some shops have an elitist vibe -- where you might feel intimidated to ask questions if you don't know much about graphic novels-- but you NEVER get that vibe here. Amazing selections from old to new comics and collectible figures. They have more old collectible comics than any other store around and will go in the back for you to grab the expensive ones. Comics are all well-organized not in boxes, but an actual case that is alphabetical. Customer service is on point. First let me say that the actual name for the store is "The Joker's Child". The store is conveniently placed on one of Fairlawn's business roads which makes it really easy to find. The store is really clean and organized which is a big plus, they don't have boxes on top of boxes of comics. The staff is great and really on top of their comic book knowledge and always willing to help. They have a great selection of comics including your usual Marvel, DC, Image, Vertigo, and even some independents, and back issues as well. A lot of the back issues that I cant find in other comic shops i usually find here. The store also has the ability to carry a lot of variants so definetly check that out. They also have plenty of TPBs and hardcovers if you're into those. The store isnt just all about comics either! They have statues, busts, action figures, collectibles, and all kinds of merchandise that i am probably unaware of. On the downside Joker's has is the lack of a 50 cent comic box or a $1 comic sale box. Perhaps they did it in the past and phased it out but all i know is that everything is cover price basically. And back issues are marked slightly higher then cover price just so you know. On the upside if you are a New 52 fan they have a great weekly bundle that saves you a couple of bucks. The bags and boards are the best quality ones i have and they come complimentary with the comics. Another plus is the Joker money you receive when your purchase is $20 - $25+ or so, sorry i dont recall the exact amount. All in all i gave then the 5 because they have never let me down as a customer. read more

This is a great place to visit with tons and tons of selection. I've never seen such a collection from comics, toys, collectibles, apparel -- they have it all. It's a pretty big store too. The people at the counter are very friendly & helpful. My only downsides were that they don't take credit cards unless you spend more than $10 (so cash rules here), and I didn't get approached at all while browsing the aisles. The nearest ATM is down the block, but it charges a $3 fee. CRAZY! Not to mention, it would always be a warmer experiencing when you're greeted and approached while in the store. Be careful with this shop.Brought a few books up to the counter and simply said " these aren't priced correctly i'll have to check ebay to get you updated prices" Also, i bought a high end silver-age book from them. I realized when i got home it was missing the pin-up and refused to let me return. That's part on me for not checking the book in the store, but if you do decide to do business with these "jokers" , make sure to check the interior of all books. you'd think spending over $1000 on a book would warrant them to count the pages, guess not! read more

My first experience with the Joker's Child was two years ago, and it was after visiting four other local comic book shops. I don't recall the names of the others, but I still frequent Joker's Child. Twice a week in many cases. Do yourself a favor and get to know the folks who make this place work. It's one thing to pick up a book and go; it's another to inquire and converse. Prior to 2011, I hadn't read a comic in my life. Now I consider this a hobby that I wouldn't want to be without. Comics can't accomplish this on their own, but the guidance and camaraderie of an incredible staff and ownership can. It's the only store in which I can name all of the employees. If I were to ever run away from home, this is where you'd find me. These guys are THAT GOOD. read more

This is a very good store, there is a reason why they've been in business for 25 years. The owners are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, so is their staff. If you want something they probably have it. Huge in store stock of back issues and trade paperbacks. Their location makes them the only comic shop in the immediate area, it's the only one I know of in Bergen County. The only negative is that their back issues can be a little expensive. I understand that there is large overhead cost due to their location and size of the store. If you need it NOW you can get it here. If you want a back issue from the 90's and don't need it immediately you can probably find it cheaper at another store or a local comic show. read more

I can't say enough amazing things about this place! It has an immense amount of comics as well as a great collection of collectible items. But besides that, the employees go above and beyond and are incredibly nice! They definitely know their comics and it's great to be able to talk to such an easy going group to get recommendations for a new comic to read or honest reviews on something. Also, they try to do the best they can to get you the comics you want and make sure not to nickle and dime you like other comic book shops do. A+ You will not get better service from a comic shop. They have everything from your mainstream books to trades to indie/underground comics. If they don't have what you want they'll order w no problem. I have a reserve list and never once was something missing. Nice back issue section and if they don't have a back issue ask it may be in the back. Figures, toys and collectibles too. I cannot say enough positive things about this shop. They have a good selection of comics and rare books but will overcharge you. The staff can be very condescending and rude when you ask them a question. Often when I go there the staff will have a section (particularly the S section) covered doing inventory during store hours so you can't get to titles such as Spider-Man or Superman and when you ask them to move they'll have an attitude. read more

I have been collecting comics religiously since I was 12. I'm currently 35 and I've been to every comic book store in New Jersey and New York. I also travel a lot for work and I do try to go comic stores in major cities just to see what I can find. There's no question in my mind that Joker's Child is by far the best comic book store around. Why do you ask? Because I've never seen a store care so much about their customers. I'm pretty aware of a comic book's value and Joker's Child is by far the fairest out there. They are not like Midtown Comics or Zapp Comics (and just about every comic store I've ever been too) and try to make a quick buck out of you and over charge every chance they have. They actually care about not over charging and try to give you the best possible deal. They also have Joker Money, that you can save, to help you save over time. They have the friendliest owners and employees. As the comic industry is growing and its getting more expensive to actually collect single issues, I've thought about quitting and just go digital and trades. But one of the reasons I still collect single issues is just to go to a comic book store on a Wednesday. Every comic fan/collector knows that feeling. Have gone years prior to other comic book shops for Halloween Comic Fest to pick up free comic books and have never felt like I felt today by any owner/staff. I headed to Joker's Child this year since I was already in the area, and as soon as I walked towards the table of free comic books the owner stops me and says I have to look around and shop before I can have any of the free comic books they were handing out. I asked, well if I came specifically for the comic books and didn't have an interest today in shopping can I just select them now? He follows my question by stating, "In that case I would have to throw you out" Then throws a laugh afterwards as if his "joke" was funny and not disrespectful. I ended up purchasing two items for the sake of not wasting my ride there, but i regret it. I have never ever stepped into any comic book store before where a staff member, much less an owner in this case, (from what I assumed since he was an elderly man who was directing the other staff) made me feel pressured to purchase anything, (especially when the DAY was meant to pickup FREE comic books regardless) and much less offer such a disrespectful statement. I mean let's face it. There isn't many comic shops around - let alone ones who still carry comic-related merchandise. This is the last stop on earth. They are the hallmark of the weekly comic shop in the area. They are friendly and have a huge store filled with whatever you need. They are in business after the 1995 crash for a reason! Paradox comics is still awesome, albeit smaller. Comics n toys only carries rare back issues. A&S comics is also a fun store. read more

Stopped by this shop tonight after work; been meaning to get there for over a month. Well, it was worth the effort! Great shop, with a fantastic selection of new books and back issues. The staff was friendly and helpful, even on 'New Comic Book Day-Eve' when they're flat out getting the shelves ready for Wednesday.
