The Waddell is conveniently located a couple of minutes walk away from the Capitol Theatre, and overlook the Ganaraska River. The bedroom features a Queen sized bed, air conditioning, private bathrooms, complimentary high-speed internet, and in-room Keurig coffee. We checked into the hotel around 8:30 pm, and luckily we did it in the nick of time. Since it's a smaller hotel with no 24 hours reception desk, they do lock the doors at 9:45 pm. We took the elevator to the second floor, and was greeted with a cozy hotel room. The hotel was beautifully restored and each room features custom-built cherry or mahogany furnishings, and period features such as high ceilings and large windows. It's a boutique hotel, so the design has a very small-town charm to it. On the main floor is Trattoria Gusto, where they offer Italian cuisine in a beautiful historic setting. In the morning, they do offer breakfast for hotel guests (complimentary with some rooms). We actually dined at Trattoria Gusto back in 2012, but this was the first time we stayed overnight. They don't serve breakfasts to the public, but it's open for brunch, lunch and dinner. We both opted for the Gusto Breakfast ($11.50), which came with 2 eggs (any style), breakfast potatoes with roasted caponata, sausage or bacon, and toast. Overall, the breakfast was good except the bacon. It was incredibly hard and tastes crisper than chips. I loved how central The Waddell Hotel is to downtown Port Hope. We were able to walk to many of our destinations from the hotel, and got a great view of The Salmon Migration flowing in the Ganaraska River.

Very happy with the server we had the first and last time he was very good. Food was tasty and lots of it. Pinecrest cottages was originally a summer retreat and has been around for about 150 years ! at some point about 20 cottages were built. Currant owners Diego & Lynn have owned the property for about 6 years and have done extensive renovations to the buildings and water front area.We brought along our own boat and there was ample space at the dock, pinecrest also has plenty of rental boats of all sizes and free canoes and kayaks .The cottages were clean and comfortable with great vistas and sun sets. The fishing is great either by boat or just off the dock.The cost turned out to be less than we thought ! We enjoyed the night time fires and found the other guests to be friendly, some traveled quite a distance from areas in the U.S and one we spoke to have been visiting for over 25 years ! we had a great week and have pre booked for next year. The Boat House Cabin that we stayed in was right on the water, complete with its own dock and the views were gorgeous any time of the day, especially at sunset. The cabin itself was spacious, spotlessly cleaned, and beautifully designed with modern amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen and stunning washroom features. So many thoughtful details went into the design of the cabin from the pretty tiling, artwork in the bedrooms, types of plates, etc. The basket of goodies (Away Cabins water bottle and various snacks) was also a nice touch. We also enjoyed the many shared amenities on site such as the hot tub with stunning views of the lake, the communal fire pit, a variety of fun games in the shed, and water equipment like kayaks and pedal boats. The kind and welcoming hosts Debbie and Jason check in on guests during their stay and they honestly thought of everything for such a relaxing getaway! Pictures don't do this place justice - all of my photos from here are unfiltered by the way for those wondering. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we had a lovely stay…read more Calling this place a B&B is a bit of a misnomer, really, as we had an entire portion of the house to ourselves, with our own separate entrance. Our lodgings opened out onto a balcony which overlooked an extensive garden, a historic pub, a golf course and a lake. It was a beautiful view and our living quarters were luxurious. The four-poster bed was stunningly comfortable and about four of them could have fit into the giant-sized bedroom! There was a sofa beside the bed opposite the gorgeous French windows. There was an infinite amount of storage space for all our items. The bathroom had all necessary provisions and there was something about the water pressure in the shower that made it it the best shower ever! (I can't quite describe it!) The living room had a sofa, an armchair, coffee tables, a giant-widescreen-plasma TV, plenty of reading materials and lots of much appreciated kitchen items such as a toaster and a Keurig machine. And the heated swimming pool! This was included in the price and reserved for our use only! Absolutely amazing. It was a lovely feeling heading out into the bitter cold for dinner, knowing that we would return to such a luxury! The combination of all the above ensured that paying $125 a night was truly superb value. That being said, there were a few things that made our stay less than perfect: Making a reservation was difficult. Numerous phone calls and emails went unanswered. I was then told to call at a specific time, at the owner's convenience. The B&B kindly offers two rates. One ($125) for no breakfast, one ($140) with breakfast included. As I booked in advance of a surprise trip for my bf, I wasn't sure - when booking - which option he would prefer. When I spoke with the owner to make my reservation, I asked if we could let her know upon arrival which option we would prefer. I was told this would not be a problem and they would accommodate our request either way. When we arrived, we were told that it was too late to request a breakfast, as the owners had made personal plans for the weekend. That's fair enough, but it would be nice to have been told in advance. We didn't have a car and there were no breakfast places or convenience stores close by. I'd be lying if I said this didn't put a dampener on the weekend. After our initial welcome and tour of our section of the house, we didn't see the owners again. This wasn't a problem in itself (although I'm sure some would have a security issue with it), but it meant that when we had some small inevitable questions (''What's the wifi password?'' ''Other guests complimented your wide selection of DVDs but we can't find any DVDs, can you let us know where they are?''), we had no way of getting answers. We knocked on the door leading into the owner's section of the house, and called the number provided, but no answer - all weekend. I would still happily return to The Inn By The Mill - it is a beautiful, romantic and luxurious B&B and I feel anyone would feel privileged to stay there. But much as I hate hate hate to criticise family-run businesses, I felt that customer service was lacking slightly. Solidly four-stars.
