Wandering round the old part of Kirkcudbright, we spotted the hotel bar and restaurant tucked away…read moredown the side, and after a quick perusal of the menu decided that it was a good choice for lunch. The menu was quite extensive and had a good choice of non-meat things for veggies, with variations possible for vegans, so we had no trouble finding something suitable to eat. I opted for a Nasi Goreng from the 'posh nosh' menu, mainly as it had been quite some time since I had one, and very tasty it was too, just avoiding being over-spiced so that there was still plenty of flavour. Herself opted for breaded monkfish goujons, which came with a wee dish of chips and peas on the side. We had just enough room left for pud, and although I'm usually wary of dessert with my dairy intolerance, after a quick look at the allergy sheet produced by the waitress I was confident enough to order the peanut butter iced parfait with dark chocolate (I did regret it later, but sometimes you have to be prepared to suffer!). Herself chose the Cranachan Brulee, and I have to say that the raspberries in that were just fabulous. Service was friendly and attentive - I was particularly impressed with the waitress bringing me the allergy sheet for the desserts to help me pick one. It wasn't the cheapest lunch, but we didn't regret it one bit and it certainly set us up nicely to continue our walking exploration of the town.

Cally Palace Hotel

The Cally Palace Hotel is located in the small town of Gatehouse-of-Fleet near Kirkcudbright,…read moreDumfries and Galloway. It is a long established hotel which was once owned by Trust House Forte prior to it being taken over by the McMillan family in the early 80's. It is 70 bedrooms which are all tastefully decorated, a 15 metre pool and an 18 hole golf course. This is a quaint hotel that seems lost in a bygone age which is not necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed sitting in one of the lounges taking tea and there are many others that do too. Although children are allowed here there are not a lot of them so there is a tranquil atmosphere. Even the guests that stay for the golf seem to have a bit more reserve than some others I have come across. The hotel offers a good base to explore the area which is a great touristy destination in the summer. Point to note the hotel closes after Hogmanay and reopens completely in the first week of March although weekend breaks may be available during January and February.

The King Arms Hotel was very comfortable, clean, and hospitable!…read more On our journey 2014, we had left Belfast Ireland very late in the day on a Stena Line car ferry to cross the Irish Sea heading to Scotland. By the time we had arrived at Cairnryan Port Scotland it was very dark, but we decided to start driving the 200 mile trek from Cairnryan Port on the A77 roadway to Lochness Lake located approx (200) miles away. Being so very tired, and struggling to drive any further, we began looking for places to rest on the long dark roads around Ballantrae, this is when we stumbled upon the King Arms Hotel. The King Arms staff booked us in late without any trouble, were very polite and offered us a late night dinner and drinks. We ended up playing pool in the pub area, having drinks, and speaking to the locals in the pub about the history of the area. In the morning, in the dining room area, they had a very nice breakfast prepared for us to sustain us on our journey, the atmosphere was amazingly family like. It was a very unexpected and pleasant stop on our journey into Scotland! If you walk to the west of the main parking lot, there is a small trail which will lead you through a large grassy soccer field, this trail will take you to the shore of Ballantrae Bay, the trail is approximately 700 feet in length. The view in the morning hours was amazing!!!!! Definitely Recommend!
Travelodge Hotel - Dumfries
Although just off the A75 outside of town, this Travelodge is set back far enough from the road…read morethat the traffic noise doesn't disturb too much. Rooms are the usual good standard that you expect from Travelodge; a very comfy king size bed and minimal room facilities. But clean, and with a good shower. Breakfast is limited either to a pre-ordered pack of cereal and juice, or you can go to the Starbucks next door. The options there are not much better but at least they have drinkable coffee. If you are prepared to walk 5 minutes and negotiate the busy roundabout, there is a Table Table restaurant next to the Premier Inn across the road that offers a more extensive (and expensive) pub grub-style menu. Other than that, you need to be prepared to drive into town for a decent meal. There's also a Shell garage with a wee shop that you have to drive through to get out so don't forget to fuel up!

Friendly, helpful and attentive service, but not overbearing. The food is top notch in terms of imagination, preparation and presentation. Most of the guests are older folks, so it is very quiet. If the weather cooperates, there is great hiking on the sea cliffs nearby.
