Since it's been almost a year since the last review here, I think it's time for some updating…read more There are currently no reviews lower than three stars, so I decided to make sure to visit this location on my trip to Tallahassee. I knew I would be arriving around 4:00 and understood that they closed at 5:00 p.m., but I really just wanted to enjoy the gardens and grounds. There was an accident on the freeway and it was 4 :40 p.m. when I arrived. All the intrigates were already shut and locked. I was annoyed as they are supposed to be open until 5:00, but I understand that some people are excited to go home and want to close up and leave early. Undeterred, I got a hotel for the night and made sure to come back first thing in the morning. I could not be more confused by the reviews. It looked to me like no one had been taking care of the grounds at all. The grass was brown, and a thick layer of leaves was covering everything. When I went to park in one of the few spaces I saw, a woman in a sedan opened her car door and let her three small dogs run out off leash. I watched them dedicate while she sat in her car on the phone and I knew it was time to go. I can see now why the employees are keen to leave early.

It is such a great place for events because it also has a lot of outdoor space that is gorgeous. I love this place and highly recommend it!

There was a lot to see and do and a lot to learn. I think it's perfect for a really interested four year old and anyone older. The Friar was everyone's favorite part. He played his part well, was great with the kids, and had so much information to share. He talked about what every day life was like, taught them about different herbs and traditional medicine, gave them a history of the property, and showed them the garden and his favorite tree. The two women in the Spanish house are the only thing that made me consider a four star rating. They were not good with children, and acted like our presence was an interruption to their sitting around and talking with each other. When we walked in one of them disciplined my six year old for not knocking on their door - not in a friendly or joking way - as if he had done something wrong for continuing a tour we paid to take. The interaction only went downhill from there, and although it doesn't seem fair to lower the rating when everyone else was so wonderful, I hope they will work to find people who are good with children in the future.

It appears well run place. This weekend was Native American Festival on property what make our visit more enjoyable. Also, we learned today that Apalachee are not recognized by Federal Government what made us sad.

You will notice that there is a painting of Richard Keith Call, young and old; and in both he has brunet features. But when they made the hand painted ambrotybe photograph, they gave him blond hair instead of giving him white hair, and it looks so out of place. The grounds are vast and delightful to take a stroll in. You will also find the plantation family's cemetery on the grounds. I highly recommend this museum, it'll take you right into the past. The staff are nice and hospitable. They will accommodate you by accompanying you to the basement if you are in a hurry and cannot participate in the walk-in tour.

This is a museum in Florida's capital and it's relatively nearby to the governor's house. Am I expecting too much in being able to fully read the names of the graves? I don't know. That being said, this is a good place to visit. You learn a lot about the history of Florida, particularly in terms of prior governmental staffing and their families. Oddly enough, too, I believe this was a plantation at some point. Definitely gives you perspective on how far we've come. Still, meh, I feel like I should've gotten more out of this. This is one of places that is just kind of there.

I really enjoyed this museum and I have to start off by saying it definitely deserves five stars …read more The reason I cannot give it five stars is because it was so uncomfortably warm inside that we reached a point where we just had to get out of there. It's a shame because there is so much to see here, but we probably missed out on at least an 1/8 of the museum because we were sweating and felt so icky we just needed to get back out into the fresh air. This was in winter mind you, so saying that it was just too hot outside is no excuse. It was only around 68 degrees at the hottest point of the day we visited and we came in the morning so leaving the museum was literally a breath of fresh air. I cannot imagine how it gets in the summer. Although the temperature made us miss some of the museum, we made sure to get through all the cars before leaving. We spent around 2 hours here and could easily have stayed longer. This is not just a quick walk-through car museum. It's packed wall to wall, upstairs and downstairs, with cars, collectibles, Americana and lots of really unexpected items. I love rare and classic vehicles so seeing a tucker 48 in person was pretty cool. That alone made my day. The Oldsmobile futuramic 88 was another favorite and the limo that had been converted into a train car was just wild in the best way and blew my mind. You definitely don't see cars like this everyday. It's not just cars here though, they had a golden rococo style piano that was to die for! It was absolutely stunning. There were a bunch of gorgeous ornate antique cash registers that I really liked, interesting vintage radios, firearms, law enforcement badges, sports memorabilia and historical stuff like old medical equipment. They had a whole section of model trains and if you're into Batman they have a small section of vehicles dedicated to that. The bathroom was small but tidy and the employees were were quiet and perfunctory. It's also dog friendly, which is lovely but our dog did seem nervous walking on some of the matting on some sections of the floor so just be aware. On its face, this really is a five-star museum but the heat and humidity inside were just unexpected, and it was especially bad upstairs. We were sweating and physically uncomfortable. We really wanted to finish looking at the museum but we just couldn't take it anymore. I really hope they address the climate issue; not just for guests but for the preservation of all the items inside as well. It's was still def worth the $20 per person and I recommend a visit, just dress in layers and maybe start upstairs first.
