Jesus let me know that Gillies is the only bar that has Tequila, I'm a tequila drinker and so it was just made to be. Drinks were good, ended up buying a $1 roll the dice for a random shot game and it tasted like coffee so that was a surprise. Bar closes too early though, yall gotta keep it open for like another 2 hours yall closed right when we were just getting started

It has booths lining the walls that have been lovingly repaired many times over the years using the tried and true duct tape method. It has a pool table, fun and friendly locals (mixed in with the occasional bar fight) , a Touch Tunes juke box, beer signs that have been there for who knows how long, Sunshine Wheat Beer in a frosty mug for $1.50, and a wonderful owner named Virginia. This was my college gang's bar, and it could just be nostalgia talking but I love this place. Virginia, the owner, is a hardworking, sweet yet tough woman. She watched over us like a protective Grandmother, and even checked to see if we had finished our homework for the day before she brought us a pitcher of Sunshine. If you like dives and find yourself in Hastings, NE-go to The Olive, and say hi to Virginia for the gang and I. Things to know: Bring cash! No card machine here! There's a small parking lot and also plenty of meter free spots on the street. This place is pretty much a beer and simple mixed drink place. Don't expect to get any martinis, wine or fancy cocktails. Rum and Coke? Definitely. Cosmopolitan? Definitely not. I figured it was the owner or bar tenders vehicle. Upon exiting my car I was approached by an older gentleman that said I was parked in the wrong direction. Mind you, practically empty parking lot with Zero parking lines painted on the lot. I spoke with him for a minute about my "incorrect parking job". I guess we agreed it was okay to park in front of the bar. Walked into a fairly open facility with the TV on blast. Waitress ( older lady) asked what I would like, not overly friendly but whatever. As I was looking to see what they had she said I was parked in the wrong direction??? Bizarre !! At this point I knew it was time to leave. I'm guessing this is an older couple that owns the place and are set in their ways or don't like to make money. Either way all the best to them. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place.

Since we were the first customers of the day (I believe we arrived about 10:30-11:00am to get a good start on our day) it was hard to get a good read on the place. Our bartender was an older woman who was pretty quiet and reserved. The space is very big, about twice the size of most downtown dives in small towns. There are a couple of pool tables, and I think I saw a shuffleboard, I can't remember for sure. There was also a payphone... something you almost never see anymore. I'm assuming this has to become a pretty fun hangout later when it's busy. How could it NOT be, what with all the oversized inflatable decor hanging from the ceiling? (See photos.)

The prime rib was very good, the jumbo shrimp were about as big as I have ever seen and the salad bar is awesome. The salad bar was more of a pasta bar than salad as the usual accoutrement for salad wasn't there (croutons, cucumbers, bacon bits etc) but the homemade pasta selections were excellent. I had a crab bowtie pasta that was made with real crab rather than the fake stuff you would normally find in this part of the country. The prime rib was more medium than medium rare (I always order rare or medium rare) but had excellent flavor so no biggie. I had the hash browns and a fresh baked roll as well. All in all an excellent meal and a great value. There were a few other couples we were with who eat here religiously and they said everything else on the menu is just as tasty and excellent. The service was a tad slow but not enough to get upset about. They were a bit busy but not enough to explain the slower service. Anyway I'm being picky but the service and the medium steak is why I opted for four stars instead of five. I will most definitely go back and tell others that this place overall is great!
