After having a moment of pure inspiration on the subway today, I did a dead sprint to yelp to see if there was a page for the L-Train to go and put my inspiration down on theoretical paper. Inspiration can often go as fast as it comes, so I needed to word vomit somewhere before the feeling left forever. I literally laughed out loud when I saw there were 213 reviews for F'in L-train ahahah. I mean what kind of individual takes the time to review the L-Train? Well add me to the list I guess. Anyways, see my thoughts below: I was standing on the subway platform on the way to work in the morning feeling the summer humidity start to drape over me, beads of sweat beginning to form on my abnormally large forehead. The subway doors open and I wrestle to squeeze in and find any room on the already jammed packed subway car. "Packed like sardines" is a trite metaphor that my Grandpa would say, but it is the only description that comes to mind. I finally find a spot with my left hand holding a pole and my right arm pinned to my side, chorded apple headphones in my ears with no music playing. I stay ready so I don't have to get ready. As I settle in, I feel a strong, ineffable energy near me. I begin to scan the subway car, as my first reaction is to look for danger. As I am cautiously looking from left to right, I lock eyes with a girl who looks to be in her mid 20s. She was two bodies away from me, her head perfectly between two NPCs in my Tuesday morning experience. I QUICKLY jolt my head to the right and look down, she jolts hers up and to her right. "Damn I got caught looking... or maybe I caught her looking" I said to myself. Thank god I was wearing my Burberry button down and my favorite all black boots. I was looking and feeling like a World Champion. I turn my head to the side where I have her in my peripheral vision, but at an angle where no one could tell I was looking at this angel gracing the L-Train. Her aura was glowing and you can't deny the shine of a Jedi. The beautiful big brown eyes, clear skin, long and slightly curly dirty blonde hair, resting dimple filled smile, and most of all the youthful energy that has not been corrupted by big corporate America had me in a TRANCE. Or maybe it was that 9th Street Espresso cold brew ahaha that shiii hits different. My mind began to run, and I couldn't catch it even if I had a 3 mile head start. The daydreams consisted of the following: coffee walks on the westside highway, taking weekend trips to Montauk, bringing her back home to meet my family, doing a paint-by-numbers together while showing each other our favorite songs, what our kids' names will be, etc. As I think to myself, "Wow I am absolutely nuts wtf is wrong with me..." the doors at 14th St--Union Square open. I put my head down and immediately exit the train without looking back, doing my absolute best to be Mr. Cool Guy. I know what you're thinking. "Johnny why didn't you say anything to her?" Good question, my dear reader. This is a 2 part answer. 1) I'm really shy so no shot I would ever. 2) Any spoken words would have completely ruined the experience and reality I had just created in my head, and I have come to love getting inspiration from these kind of events. The L Train, the Carnarsie Line as they call it. Lots of people getting on this train heading off to Brooklyn and coming into Manhattan. Hipsters, business suits and just about anyone you can imagine takes this line. It's all the gentrification that is happening in Brooklyn. Still there are some parts that are not the safest like several stations heading through East New York. Only couple stations in Brooklyn where the the hipsters and yuppies are. What I love about the L train is that there is not such a long wait to hop on the train going towards 8th Ave in Manhattan like every 5-8 minutes there is a train coming. It's packed during rush hour, but then again there is another train coming within several minutes. In the old days, you miss an L train and the wait is brutal. The MTA now a days have so many trains coming and going there is no need to run after trains or hold doors. Life is good in NYC. read more

Oh the L train. It is reliable in the sense that you can always count on service to be disrupted and "train traffic ahead". Yesterday the mob of people waiting extended as far as the steps of the station, almost to the turnstiles. My 30 minute commute took over an hour. That being said, the passengers on this train are by far the raddest you'll meet in NYC. Late one Saturday night, a gal named Chelsea had one too many. The whole train got her a bag, a hair tie, and cheered for each stop she made without puking. It was beautiful. Other highlights include pole dancers, the pan flute guy, and white hipsters (dreadlocks optional) debating stereotypical millennial topics such as, but not limited to, who loves kale more, and heteronormativity. I won't even pretend that the L train hasn't made me COL (curse out loud) on many a day in the 10+ years I've been riding it. When I lived on Avenue B/14th, I took it only when I needed to go to 6th or 8th Avenue to transfer, otherwise, I'd just walk. I would even take the damn bus over the L train. And then, I moved to Williamsburg. Ain't no way around taking the L train when you live there (unless you live on the Southside, obviously and need to take the JMZ). What I've encountered on this train: -countless maniacs who I thought were going to kill me (OK, that might be a slight exaggeration). -the lady with a rotting leg due to ignoring her diabetes (RIP) -a gang of 10-year-olds who made fun of my shoes -countless couple fights -"The" infamous junkie couple spare changing -at least two different fantastic mariachi bands -a junior high student who told me I was cool and then asked me out -Ralphy, the homeless dude selling a free Weekly or two and then cursing out the entire train for being cheap bastards. I'm sure I'm forgetting a whole lot. I've taken it from end to end (8th ave to Rockaway Parkway) for work. Yes, I had an office in Soho and had to do a home visit in Canarsie). It's quite cool when the L goes above ground in East New York (where you can connect for the A to JFK if you're a cheapskate like me and don't feel like forking over 75 bucks for a cab). I was on the L train when I learned that two planes had crashed into the WTC on 9/11. In fact, the train was just sitting in the station when the conductor made the announcement. The L train at rush hour... Oh HELL...no, seriously. I switched to part time at my day job so that I could avoid RH and get to work at 12:30 instead of 8:30. The crowding on the L train figured heavily into that decision (as did the fact that I just despise the mornings, but that's a whole other story). Coming home from a night hanging out with friends in Brooklyn the L train was filled with bearded crusty granola people, and we were serenaded by a couple of hippie looking musicians with guitars playing tunes from the 70's to the chicken dance. Almost fell trying to reach the L. After transferring trains, signs direct you to walk along the platform. If you're unfortunate enough, you may have a long walk down the entire platform. At the end, you go single file, dangerously close to the yellow line of death! You could so easily tip over & fall onto the tracks. It's hot enough to fry an egg down there, heading to the H*LL train. The L train itself ? Crowded, no seats. Baby strollers, bicycles, men too old for tattoos & too young for beards. Hey listen L Train I agree you take to me Brooklyn but you are very unpredictable. Many a times I have spent so much time waiting for you on the platform(weekdays), on top of that you just make a announced halt before my destination which really frustates me. I know MTA is working on the Canarsie Line tracks to develop a system that will transfer control of the trains to a computer on board, as opposed to the current system, where the trains are manually operated by a human operator.But still almost every weekend you don't provide services and the station in Williamsburg is always closed for repairs on the weekends. When it's good, it's very, very good. But when it's bad, it's horrible. Yeah, it's fast. It runs fairly regularly and quickly. You what kills it? Two things: Rush hour. I don't care how many aspiring models ride this line. When it's rush hour, way too many people in one car for my liking. Weekend shuttle. I hate the L weekend shuttle. Plus why is it, when I have somewhere to go important on the weekend, is when the L line decides to pull the weekend shuttle stunt? Ugh. Still, to be fair...the L has made some major improvements. I do remember one time back in the mid-80s. This is going back to my teen years, so I do remember the L before Williamsburg got all trendy and whatnot. Anyway..it was New Year's Day. Mid-afternoon. One skinny pale guy, maybe looked like some indie rocker type, sitting by himself in the corner seat. The subway car was quiet. Mostly people minding their own business. Then all of the sudden, the quiet guy in the corner just puked something vicious. He was throwing up continuously. When he was done, quietly got up as if he had been reading the newspaper, and nonchalantly got off on his subway stop. The rest of the car who had been watching him were in stunned silence. But when i needed to get home quickly, you were my iron horse getting me to my destination in 12 minutes flat. I live off this one past Hipsterland Proper so I think I've got plenty of cause to review it. I've also lived in my area for almost 4 years. So, when the L train is good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's REALLY BAD. The MTA is notorious for shutting down parts of this line on the weekends and forcing you to take shuttle buses. When they do this starting at Myrtle-Wyckoff, I can simply take the train to Broadway Junction (since I live between these 2 stops) & take the A/C into Manhattan. The shuttle buses take twice as long to get you anywhere & are normally packed to dangerous levels. Getting a seat is like fighting for a parking space at a suburban mall during Black Friday. It's also lame when they skip stops to go either to Myrtle-Wyckoff or Broadway Junction; I've had to walk many times from Myrtle Ave. to my home since I live closer to that than Broadway Junction. Once, this happened on a weeknight without ANY warning & the next thing I know, I & a bunch of angry riders are at Broadway Junction waiting for the Manhattan bound train. Oh, and forget about taking this one at night unless you have a lot of time to kill. The upsides are this train is newer, generally cleaner & the subject of many Craig's List missed connection ads. Still the same issues w/homeless people, panhandling & performers but they usually show up near Bedford Ave. I've been on worse so as long as this train is running on time, you're in good shape. 11:30 am...23rd December of 2016. My mom and I were trying to go to Brooklyn. We both got into the Manhattan train so we jumped off the train and walked to the train staff. We explained to the staff politely that we have MONTHLY card and we would like to get back on the train but we can't because the train was swiped a few mins ago and can't be reused. The staff was being very rude and said we are stupid because we didn't read the sign and made us feel very bad. So I didn't say anything.. I asked her agin.. What can we do? She kept saying how stupid we are that we don't read the sign and then She yelled at us and put the middle finger to us after she found out that we got into on the 1st Ave. she said it's our fault that we don't report the people on 1st Ave. but that's the thing.. We realized we got into the wrong train once we already on the train that was heading to 3rd. She was being rude and I was very angry.. We are tried of taling to her so we had to walk all the way back to 1st. My mom is 67.. It was very terrible that we had to walk all the way to the 1st and being yelled at like this- how can o report? I don't think she should work anymore read more

Once upon a time when Ed Koch was mayor, I lived in Bushwick. Back then, it was a very violent area and riding the subway was a death sentence. My family and I lived on Woodbine Street near the Myrtle-Wyckoff L and M train station. We used to take the L train to my late-grandpa's house in Harlem. Then, in 1990 when I was 5, we moved to Springfield Gardens, Queens. After I left for Queens, I rarely used the L. Today, I took a packed L train from Union Square to Bedford Avenue. Nearly 30 years since I left Bushwick, things have changed. As I rode the train, I saw so many hot white and Asian hipster chicks. Back in the 1980's, very few non-minorities used the L. Bedford Avenue station could use a cleaning (it'll get renovated in 2019 when they shut down the L line for construction). The L line also uses sleek new cars, not the broken down cars that I rode on when I was a kid. Unfortunately, however, some things haven't changed. The service isn't commensurate to the ridership- both Union Square and Bedford Avenue were packed (tip: the Driggs Avenue end of the Bedford Avenue stop is much less congested than the Bedford Avenue end. Apparently, hipsters don't like to walk down the platform. They're either too lazy or scared that they'll get mugged). And while Bushwick and Williamsburg have gentrified, lots of "undesirables" still use the L east of the Myrtle Avenue station. No one is looking forward to the 2019 shutdown, but it's a necessary evil. Another hurricane could destroy the 93 year old Canarsie Tunnel, and given global warming, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another hurricane in the city. The trains are spotless, they're all of that super-modern robot train variety with the clear announcements, sweet electronic maps and assorted SF amenities, and they seem to go overboard to keep you informed when you're on the platform when the next train (and the one after that) is coming. Somewhere between love and hate runs a train named L. I live right off the 1st and 14th Street stop and it's the only train less than a 10 minute walk from my house. It connects to almost every area of the city, however, and has become an integral part of my life since moving to the East Village. Unfortunately, I'm not the only person who feels this way. During rush hour, I've waited for two rounds of trains to pass before finally wriggling into a tiny edge space in the people polluted cars. I love that they give you a time estimate; something about knowing a train will be there in 3 minutes gives me endless calm. Being the primary connection between Manhattan and Williamsburg it attracts plaid shirts, unnecessary thick-rimmed glasses, blunt bangs and a variety of conversation -- mostly drunken if you're riding past 10pm. The L is my New York, and while it's over-populated, smelly, expensive, and sometimes infuriating -- it's also one of the most fascinating rides of your life. read more

Horrible. And this is coming from someone who lives at the far end of the ghastly, infamous, worst-train-line-in-the-city 'R' train in southern Brooklyn. I thought I knew what annoyance was..I thought I knew what my limits were. After all, my annoyance meter is kicked up through my pelvis every morning/evening by taking the 'R'. Ha. Boy was I ever wrong. I should count my blessings. Whenever I'm moping about the miseries of the 'R' I should always bear in mind just how much more worse --astronomically worse--it is, to take one of the city's more crowded trains, through one of the city's more crowded hubs, transfers, and corridors--such as taking the 'L' train from Union Square to Bedford Ave in Williamsburg. The principle is simple: Williamsburg is one of the city's most crowded neighborhoods. And whatever is despicable about an MTA train line is magnified a thousand-fold in relation to how much of a crowd rides that same route as you. See, the 'R' train--as bad as it is--is generally empty. This doesn't dawn on me often enough. But nothing which could possibly depress, alarm; or disturb one when taking the sleepy, tedious, little R/N train to the sleepy, dull, obscure part of Brooklyn where I reside compares in terms of the sheer, raw, irritation which can be sampled by taking a train like the 'L'. The duration of my tolerance for the whole "'L' train scene" was about five minutes before I found myself praying for a blunt object to strike the back of my head. Because riding on the 'L' train to Bedford St station from Manhattan--you not only get all the lameness of a typical MTA train ride--but you also get a hundred more shrieking disgraces brought on by being **packed** and **crammed** in with about 2,500 other disgusting, two-legged New York vermin shuffling along with you to your destination. Pressing in on you every moment of your ride; hampering you as you get in or out of any doorway; hindering you as you climb the steps. Their breath in your face, their bodies on yours; their hair in your mouth; their dandruff falling on your coat; their very sweat in your nostrils. And they call this the 'love' train, huh? For me its really the, "'Could I reconcile a sudden, vicious, Uzi shooting-spree with my previously ethical lifestyle?'-train". You can't hardly breathe! I've had easier train rides in cities three times the density of New York and never had to deal with such oppressiveness. I love the L train. Cutting across Manhattan, it hits almost every major train line making travel to any part of New York fairly easy. Located in lower Manhattan, it services hot neighborhoods including; The Meatpacking District, West Village, Chelsea, Union Square and the East Village as well as Williamsburg, Bushwick and Rockaway Park on the other side of the River. The trains on the line are new, clean and spacious. During the week, the trains are regular and services a large number of commuters making it very busy during the rush hour. The 1st Ave. stop is my stop. During the morning, if you're heading into the city, I recommend queuing by the front side of the train as many Brooklynites get off on this stop, giving you a fighting chance to get on the train. The Union Square station is one of the largest station and allows you access to 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R. (North - South bound lines). You man or may not enjoy the buskers that frequent this station which includes; the ubiquitous breakdance crew, the equally ubiquitous robot statue and everyone's favorite the Scientologists/Evangelicals. I love the Elf train. Sure it's overcrowded, there's no shortage of shitty ipod noise pollution, or dumb, foul-mouthed kids talking about they shoes, but it's cleaned up real well. And no other train travels straight into Always Always Land. It's cars sparkle with so many nymphs, pale faeries, and high elves. It's a wonderful parade of sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, and dickheads too. There are occasional dangers but also those clandestinely tasked with protecting the meek and the naughty princesses. The hypster train, as many call the L, runs all its way along 14th street from 14th street 8th ave in west Manhattan and goes deep through Brooklyn. First stop on the other side of East river right in the middle of Williamsburg, at North 7th street and Bedford ave, then it goes to Bushwick. The L train is pretty fast, especially when in runs under the river: at the rush hour, early in the morning, I used to stand on a subway car that packed that I could not even turn on my own feet, just holding to the bar not to fall over people because of the train shaking; it's always nice to exchange fun eye with other passengers in the same condition. That's one of the things that make New York a great city: the people. Of course the service could be more frequent, as many other lines. It's pretty nice also to see on that line, at every hour, interesting looking persons that live in hypster Williamsburg and Bushwick; after a few stops the train continues through rough Brownsville and ends in residential Canarsie. Brownsville, known as unsafe area, is an interesting hood, because of its high concentration of high rise projects, such as Van Dyke and Langston Hughes houses. I find you helpful for traveling across town from 8th ave. to Union Square because I'm too lazy to traverse the Avenues, or say, if it's raining. I also like you because if I'm out and about in WB I can take you to the F and back to my neck of Brooklyn, rather than the G (which I used to have a crush on), which seems to be infrequent these days. I don't mind waiting for you at Union Square (more so than other stifling platforms) in the summer because you have giant ceiling fans on the platform. But, could you please do me a solid? The L serves a purpose, and service is almost frequent enough, maybe 3 stars, but the station attendants are absolutely horrible. This review is for the 8th Ave bound stop at 1st avenue. Countless times I've seen them refuse to help tourists who accidentally swiped their unlimited cards on the other side. I think they take pleasure in telling them they have to wait 7 minutes, such assholes. Then there's rush hour, if trains are delayed the platform will be dangerously full, and the waste of life manning the booth never warns people not to swipe their cards. I'm writing this review, not to cover the extremely well documented portion between, say, Graham and 8th Ave, but rather the portion beyond Graham that stretches out towards the hinterlands of Canarsie (home to Curtis Sliwa). Yes, if you manage to stay on the L-train until the last hipster has departed, beyond the furthest reaches of gentrification, you will be rewarded with a rich experience that will show you just how big Brooklyn really is. First you have the truly monumental Broadway Junction stop, the first station where the sun shines down on the L-train. The structure itself is a massive 5 story bohemeth carrying the J/Z, the L, and the A-trains (along with at least 1 completely abandoned line that used to go to Far Rockaway). Further along you get to the stations like Sutter Avenue, Livonia Avenue, and New Lots Avenue. This is where the neighborhood can be truly rough and tumble; keep your wits about you if you decide to disembark at Livonia and stroll around at night. To get an idea of how much this 'hood is treated like the stepchild of New York, realize that the 3-train's Junius Street station is less than a block from Livonia, but the MTA doesn't even offer a free transfer between them. In this area the train runs parallel to an assortment of metal scrap and junkyards the likes of which you may not believe existed in NYC. Eventually you get to Canarsie, which is almost suburban in it's remoteness. So keep doing what you're doing L-train. And for the sleeping hipster waking up in East New York? Stay on the train 2 more stops 'til the end before getting off to wait for the Manhattan-bound to take your drunk-ass home. read more

The people on the L train make this train the worst train in NYC and I am so fed up about it, I am going to write every incident that happens here on Yelp. It is prompt and clean. No complaints there. The mta has done a very good job with providing enough trains and cleaning them. The men on it are another story. I dreaded riding this train as a pregnant woman. Not only did none of the hipsters look up from their books on making the world better to give me a seat, but my husband actually was ready to punch someone out when two -- count them -- two men in their 20s shoved past my 8 month big belly to the one seat in front of me. Its not so bad once it gets to Ridgewood, but before metropolitan Ave. it is a nightmare. Just tonight 8/17/09 some idiot on too much adrenaline barrelled through me at 5 feet tall (he was at least 5.8) to get to the shuttle train into manhattan. Oh yes, he saw me. He thought that when I said excuse me, I was playing a game of chicken after trying to get past an endless line of people rushing for the train, which was just going to sit there for awhile. He pushed right in front of me, as if trying to prove something. Big brave man. Oh, I wish I had followed him and given him a piece of my mind. *********** 11/23/10 The train conductor must think that its the Indy 500. He was going so fast that several of the standing passengers in my car toppled over. Including one guy in a baseball cap, black jeans and hoodie. HE FELL RIGHT ONTO MY SON in his stroller, cause he's too cool to hold on. He looks back as I push him up with one arm to keep his fat under-wear-hanging buns off my toddler's face. I say: "Are you alright?" He says nothing. Way to go, guy. Great manners! Silly me? 'I'm sorry, is the baby okay ?" Dear L Train, When I first found out I was going to be with you everyday, I was super excited. You seemed flashy and exciting. Everyone said you were a fucking loser, but I said no! I even ignored the fact that one of the first times I was with you, I saw a girl wearing a tshirt with the entire lyrics of "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs printed on it. Then came the delays, the service cuts, the near panic that comes from being in a shuttle bus packed to brim. I'm tired of stepping on peoples over priced shoes, and the look of zombie like boredom that seems to glaze over everyone on the train. No, it's not your fault that you are filled with scenesters, hipsters, slackers, junkies, and crazies. But is is your god damn fault that you come every 26 minutes and only take me half way home. Every hipster's favorite train. You will see them get off on Morgan Avenue, maybe Montrose Avenue, perhaps Bedford Avenue or Grand street. Gotta love you some Williamsburg! Okay, this train is the ONLY train that goes to Canarsie. You can transfer on the L from the A, C, J, Z trains from Broadway Junction. The train takes time to come. Sometimes you might need to wait an hour or more. What? I'd rather walk. The last time I was waiting with a friend to go to Canaria on Halloween and the train took 33 minutes to arrive. Um what? I don't think so. You can visit all of your favorite hot spots in Williamsburg if you wish. People, Williamsburg isn't the only spot in Brooklyn that's fun! Tsk... read more

Okay, if I'm going to have to compare riding the subway on the L vs. other parts of the city.....I certainly like this one the best. Sure, the trains are kinda messed up on the weekends...but it is the burden we bear for having one of, or the only, 24 hours public transport systems in the world. Sure, I might have to squish on for the 9am Manhattan bound....but at least these are people I'm okay being squished into. The peeps who ride the L train may look dirty, but most aren't. In fact, most smell quite delightful. I'm the last person that wiggles onto the train full well declaring "I am sacrificing all personal space" for this ride...iPod in place I close my eyes in the sea of people....and I wait 3 stops...but the people I stand next to (or under) smell pleasant. I can't say I'd be okay with having 4 other bodies against me in a subway situation on the regular unless I was with my beautiful strangers from the L train. read more
