These are the trains I take going back home and to work for my whole life! The J and Z trains go all the way to Jamaica Avenue and Broad Street. The M train goes to Metropolitan Avenue and to Manhattan and back to Forest Hills. Sucks that they go midtown and to upper Queens instead of to the financial district and to Bay Parkway, Brooklyn like back in the days when it was a brown M train. I miss that. The M train is now orange and they are all the new R160 trains by the Japanese so no wonder they have blue plastic seats that smell so damn strong like formaldehyde! When they were built, the plastic produced a strong smell for my liking. It sucks. Also it is very lit and the conductor does not announce the train stops anymore for these trains. The train has automated announcements unlike the J trains that are still the old R42 ones with the long bench seating, which is limited seating for customers. The gray benches are solid and there's heating underneath them and sometimes the heat blows my feet. These trains got a lot of scratches on the door windows. I think the old R42 trains are cleaner and lot fresher than the blue plastic benches on the R160 trains. Sucks that the old trains got to go. The blue seating is getting dirtier especially during the pandemic when sitting was impossible. The blue seats are all smeared with dirt and oil and ointment in almost every spot. Blood and poop too on them! It's like what the hell. The MTA should definitely impose a special cleaning crew project to clean the filthy dirty blue seats. read more

JMZ subway line at Marcy Avenue is above ground so you are subjected to the elements and probably get pretty pissed off when it's raining, windy, cold, or snowing and you're stuck on that platform waiting for the train to come. Plus, the long ass climb up the stairs to get to the platform doesn't help matters too much. At least you can get cell phone reception along this elevated line. Other then that there is nothing at all that makes this subway station stand out or any different from the many along this line. Plus, the hood surrounding it is kind of sketchy at night. Oh yeah there is one thing. The subway lets out right across the street from Duff''s Heavy Metal bar! It's the only reason I ever take this train to begin with and gets three stars just for that. When you ride this train every weekday you tend to grow a love and hate relationship with it. During the morning rush hours the J n Z runs skip stop (love) helping me to get to work a lil faster. Then you have ur days when they use the old trains for the Z and then you get kicked off because the doors aren't working properly (hate). Then you have the mango coconut incense man selling packs of incense for a dollar (love). The fact that the JZ is above ground is a draw between love n hate. U get to receive important calls, texts or listen to the radio (love) , but then there are the people who talk really loud when they are on the phone ughh shh (hate). With every MTA train gotta take the good with the bad. read more

Dear J Train: When I lived in Williamsburg, the only time you came through for me was on the weekends. You were crowded. Late. and unreliable. Now, I live in Queens and when you decide to stop at my station, you go local- for ALL 22 stops. For the exception of the Step children, Flushing, Lorimer, and Hewes Street- every other station gets love. Why leave these stooges out?? FOr you J train- you get 3 stars out of 5... Even though the train is slow, unpredictable at times, you would find me taking the JMZ line home to Bushwick/Ridgewood just to take in the amazing views of the city. Because...well... sometimes it is just more of a human feeling to be above ground. I will bypass the L train on any day, if possible--- but, mostly the JMZ comes in handy on the weekends or on my way home from work. JMZ would always take me to some of my favorite places in the city and boroughs; Manhattan Chinatown, Elmhurst, LES, Jackson Heights, Koreatown, etc. But, only take it if you have some time to kill because the JMZ, like the G train, takes you to those places that no other train will. P.S.- The M train is often not running for no apparent reason. I feel so bad for people living in the Fresh Pond area, as far as transportation goes. read more

Oh JMZ, I used to be a hater but now I am a lovah...the JMZ is like the L train's uncool little brother: it lives near the L, is sometimes interchangeable but is usually annoying and fairly awkward and you'd rather just not deal with it. So for real, the JMZ used to never, ever ever come and I avoided it as much as possible. Well now it actually comes! Sometimes! Here are some other reasons why I am a lover of the JMZ: - Easy access to male suitors on the Lower East Side (one stop- yay!) - The view as you ride over the Williamsburg Bridge is really pretty amazing. You get a crystal clear view of the Manhattan skyline, the Domino Sugar Factory, all of Williamsburg proper as well as the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. - If you get off at the Marcy Stop drunk at midnight, chances are that you will walk the wrong way and wander into the Hasidic section of Williamsburg. It is quite remarkable to witness firsthand (albeit a little embarrassing when you are clad in a halter top and ipod. Note: this did not happen to me. Ahem.) - Sometimes you have to step over drunk, passed out guys to climb up the stairs to the platform. This gives you additional street cred, particularly when accompanying your out of of town friends into Manhattan. Finally, I was on the JMZ platform the other day when I noticed them test driving the brand new trains, just like the L. Well, well it looks like the JMZ is growing up after all and it has never looked so fine... read more

i lived off the L for nearly a decade, and i grew accustomed to - though never accepted - the constant delays during rush hour. i'm pretty sure i never made it to work before 9am during my entire time off the bedford stop. EVER. like, i got written up repeatedly for not making it into the office by 9am by this evil shrew of a woman who later fired me because i twisted my ankle, didn't hobble into work and didn't bring a doctor's note. well, you know what? fuck her, she smelled real bad and had terrible crow's feet for someone who was only 32. anyway, not working means you wind up having to move to a smaller, cheaper apartment in a less glamorous neighborhood and that is precisely how i wound up off the myrtle-broadway stop of the JMZ line. you know what, dudes? life fucking rules now. i get to my new job on time, there are numerous options to get to the office and now that the M goes up through midtown manhattan, i could take a simple one train commute, no transfers. the L train? always had to at least transfer once, except for the brief glorious time i worked in union square. as i do most of my carousing in either williamsburg (south side) or manhattan's LES, the JMZ is also a perfect chariot, and oodles less expensive than a cab ride back home, though i'll be honest: i don't take the subway home after 10pm or if i'm drunk (which is unfortunately quite often). my life is worth more than a 14$ fare, it's true. unlike the L's single line terror, the JMZ's multiple tracks means the delays aren't as frequent or god-awful when something goes wrong with one train. crises are generally averted, and that's how i like my life: punctual, simple and elevated. read more

I like this commute. No one bothers you, no one has bookbag or pocketbook issues. The folks who ride this train are experienced, they don't get all fancy and try to thumb through their iPhones or iPads without holding on to the poles. These are serious commuters. They've transferred over from the commuter lines (like the LIRR, etc) and they are well trained. You get to enjoy your music, the views and whatever personal space you stake out as yours on this train. Plus, the delays are never really that serious. read more

Super fast, not to much disruption, only on the weekends. You can get to Middle Village Queens in less than 20mins, not much to do when u get there, but you can get there, lol. The J/Z is a much longer ride but very easy to get to the Long Island railroad or the JFK shuttle. The J train is a quick easy way to save money. Headed to Manhattan it gets a little crowed, but there is always one coming, you never wait more then 10mins trust me, i live across the street from it. Not stop noise. You know the JMZ train really has potential. I mean it goes from the Lower East Side to all points Brooklyn, and it's above ground. I always liked elevated trains. But of course it's also kind of forgotten. I guess ridership maybe has never been very high, so it's not as well maintained etc. Still it gives you that old new york edge, like when the lower east was sketchy, and going to BK was daring! Plus there are a lot of photo ops too, so if you wanna get some of grimy graphiti pics, this is the line to do it on. read more

I first rode with him a few months ago, and as his powerful vocals took over the intercom, I was struck by the uncanny vocal resemblance of Ron Swanson telling me the next stop was Essex/Delancey. Since that fateful trip, I have looked forward to my rides on the Z with Ron Zwanson. His rich, booming voice and no effs attitude have made him the best conductor I've ever had. Jay-Z lived off the G (for Gansta) train more so than the J/Z, which are a 10-15 minute walk from Marcy Houses as opposed to 30 seconds to the G. This fact is the G's only claim to fame and the only good that ever came of it, so let's give it that little boost of self-esteem. Jay-Z is a more Gansta (wut up G train) iteration of his nickname, Jazzy. For more proposed sources of his stage name, consult Wikipedia. But I digress. This train has some sweet views over the bridge and an escalator in my station (while us measly L riders have to take the stairs). However, I wouldn't suggest taking this train late at night if you are young and female because it's kind of sketchy waiting outside as opposed to in the relative safety and warmth of the underground station. For that reason, I appreciated the short wait for the M and J, considering it was 11 PM on a Sunday night. While the train is one of the shiny new blue-seaters, the interiors of both trains I took featured more litter than I've seen on any train I've taken (and I've ridden almost every color of the MTA rainbow). The JM would benefit from one of those "Take it with you" posters from the MTA encouraging people to properly dispose of trash. It's the most efficient way to reach the LES bar none, so for that I solute you, JM (never ridden the Z). read more

The J is fine but have long waits. The M is PERFECT. The Z IS THE MOST SLOWEST TRAIN LIKE THE 4 TRAIN. I rode the J once but it had lots of old cars from the 80's or 90's.. But there replacing R179 on the J and Z. The m trains are weirdly short like 6 cars R160s but i found it interesting. The Z train is Somehow like the J by skips stops. So the J is a 7-10 M is 5/10 Z is 2/10 The worst is the Z. read more

Train can be crowded. Not very clean and more often the M train has more trains running than the J. Metro card machines will often be out of service or won't accept bills however; change is good (wtf) who walks are with coins to purchase a metro card. Anyway it can be a little seedy early in the morning and late at night. It can be crowded on the Manhattan side to the point you have to push your way inside because no one is going to move to let you in. Not the best train but it's gets you where you need to be. read more

I HATE THE WEEKEND SHUTTLE ON THE JMZ! When the M stops at Myrtle-Bway, the platform becomes way too overcrowded with the influx of commuters. On top of that, sometimes there's confusion about where to catch the M going back to Metropolitan Avenue. If it wasn't for that, this line would've been okay. read more

I like the J train if only for the fact that nothing traumatic has ever happened and I haven't ever gotten stuck waiting for super long (Cough::L and F TRAINS::COUGH) Stations are not super clean and everything is about as expected. this train i took for years. i know the ins and outs this train line goes from lower manhattan to jamacia queens and back. train ride is pretty smooth if no interuptions or delays during the week. during the weekend this train line runs on different times but when the trains are not running on the weekend due to construction or repairs they provide shuttle buses on the street along the the train line till a certain point and then you would take the train where the shuttle would stop that would take a bit more time on your traveling. sometimes you can see alot of weird things on the this train line anywhere from homeless man taking up a whole seating row and stinking up the whole car to people fighting and i have seen fights on this train line youll also see people selling snacks, batteries etc. but always watch your surroundings and stay aware of things because ther are thieves out there and this line goes threw some bad neighborhoods. but this train can take you to alot of places. read more

The only "Express" train that skips only 3 out of 30 stops. I really hate this! And anyone who lives at Flushing, Lorimer or Hewes, stop knows how frustrating that is. The J train is the train i use the most since i live along the line( like every day 4x a day. Anyone who has taken it knows that it moves slow as hell especially when traveling from cypress hills to crescent ave and from Alabama ave to Broadway junction...forget going over the Williamsburg bridge. The worst of it all however is the weekend service which is the absolute worst! Half the line ceases to run which forces you to take a shuttle bus and the M doesn't run at all! Despite those faults it gets me to canal street and the Brooklyn bridge. And yes it run every 10 minutes even during rush hour...but it is always on time (usually). read more

Seriously, NONE of the MTA trains deserve 5 stars, but compared to all the other trains I'd have to give the JMZ 5 out of 5. I've only been taking it for 6 months on the regular, but it goes to Queens (my parents live there) and during rush hour, they come about every 3-4 minutes, and it is the most consistent out of the trains I take (A,C,E, F, M, N, R, Q, L, 7). Really can't complain about these train lines. Although, the Z is kind of an elusive mystical creature because it seems to only run about 2 hours a day. read more

Soo, I've been cheating on the L Train for awhile now with the M. Most days, I would much rather walk the mile or so to Myrtle-Wycoff than to take the L at all. Most of the route is above ground, so I can listen to Pandora and play stupid games on my phone. I like the view over the Williamsburg Bridge and I like to go to the LES a lot as well. The best part is, I don't have to deal with Union Square's madness when I try to catch the 4 or 5 to work..I just cruise on into Bryant Park. The M is my mistress train, shh don't tell! read more

Dear J Train: I miss the days when I used to ride you (ragged). Being able to use my phone for data the whole way from Manhattan to my place in Bed-Stuy was magical. I don't miss listening to people having screaming conversations on the Williamsburg Bridge, though. Except the one time that this guy was sitting next to me and the train was stopped for some emergency or track maintenance or something. He told me how he had just gotten paid and spent the afternoon with his favorite prostitute. Then he asked if he could use my iPhone to call his wife. I gave it to him out of the goodness of my heart and the dumbstruckness of my mouth. He told her he'd be home in a while (he was going to Queens). She told him he could be there within 20 minutes or to not bother coming back. Then they hung up and she called me and left screaming voicemails a couple times a week for the rest of the summer. This line passes through a nice array of neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, and consequently you get a great melting-pot mix on just about every ride. From the Italian goyls from Middle Village who just had their nails done and are BFFs with the motorman, to the lovely Latinas of Bushwick, to the Chinese ladies who charge into the train with 5 kids and scream out seat locations to them like Brett Favre calling an audible, to the Hasidic and other hipster residents of Willy B. By the time you hit the bridge the car is chock full of REAL NEW YORKERS--the kind they advertise about on TV and everything. All with a common purpose--getting over the bridge, for work, for an escape into the City, for the view. Ahhh, that reminds me--the trip over the Williamsburg Bridge is awesomely picturesque, so bring a camera sometime, or get up out of your seat and use that iPhone camera if you can tear yourself away from reading Yelp reviews for 5 minutes. read more

Used to hate. Now love. Used to be that I despised my JMZ train when it only went to City Hall and looped back to the BK. Then, I got a job on Canal. JMZ train = godsend. Then, MTA changed the M train to go uptown. One of the few helpful decisions the MTA has ever made. Perhaps weekend M service could be added in the future? JMZ comes frequently pretty much all the time, and it doesn't have nearly as many service disruptions as the L-train. Plus, you get a great view of the city going over the bridge. The biggest qualm might be that it's a little slow going over the bridge and that since it's above-ground, you have to weather the elements a bit when you're waiting on the platform. But you can't have it all. read more

This train gets me to the LES when I need/want to go. It also gets me to the F, which I tend to need a surprising amount, actually. It's less reliable than the L and a slightly further walk, so I myself don't tend to use it very often. The view over the Williamsburg bridge is beautiful as well. And to those saying this is hipster hell, you have clearly never been on the L or the G. JMZ is the LEAST hipster train of all in this area. That's not necessarily a bad thing. read more

I live between the JMZ and the L. Frankly, I'm not feeling this train, pretty much just because it is overground. Because it is overground people feel the need to get on their cellphones and I frankly don't want to hear it. A quick, "I'll be home in 20 minutes." is fine, but the back and forth., it makes me want to rip my eyeballs out. I like an underground train that keeps that stuff in check. read more

@ Manhattan bound tracks at front stairs swiper doesn't work properly. because there's only one entrance there lines are backed up every morning. Even if you get frustrated waiting in line for minutes and you missed 3 trains, don't be tempted to sneak in through the emergency exit. Police is waiting for ya! I was taking the J train today right after Manhattan bridge someone decided to pull the EMERGENCY CORD. I was late to my appointment of course and I left earlier for things like this , but didn't know it was gonna take so long to resume the trip. The BMT Nassau Street Line is ok, the BMT Jamaica Line is pretty good. Chambers Street in Manhattan because it is the most disgusting and the only station in the system which has not been renovated. The best part about the BMT Jamaica Line is that it is almost entirely elevated. Good for taking pictures and videos. You are always able to see what is around you and enjoy the ride. It is the oldest elevated line which is still in use today. Dating back to 1885. Too bad the line almost entirely consists of R160A subway cars now. read more

If you're in the LES or Williamsburg, the JMZ is definitely the best train option if you're trying to decide between it, the L or (god forbid) the G. As a morning commute goes, standing above ground at the Marcy or Hewes stops and watching the snow fall is certainly more pleasant than tromping underground and heaving forward to get on the L with the smelly masses. If the light hits just right you can pretend you're in a Bruce Davidson photograph. When the weather really sucks and I can't ride my bike, I'll gladly walk a few extra minutes or take the B61 and get the J. read more
