Opened in 2000 as a private golf club with 18 challenging holes, Chechessee Creek Club also has a tasteful full-service Clubhouse, Lodge and several Cottages for relaxing between rounds or entertaining friends. I was immediately struck by the stately Lowcountry charm of the one-story Clubhouse replete with hard wood floors and tasteful oriental area rugs. The Clubhouse dining room has an intimate yet unpretentious ambience with top-tier Southern hospitality and genuinely friendly service. I immediately felt at home while respecting their long-standing traditions. Once on the golf course, with knowledgeable caddies guiding us through the contours of the greens, I quickly appreciated the beauty of this Coore-Crenshaw track. The fairways quietly wind through stately Southern pines and quintessential live oaks with picturesque Spanish moss. Chechessee's simple yet classy cream-colored scorecard calls out a 6,641 yard round trip from the championship tees while the member tees check in at 5,930. I found the small, crowned greens to be the biggest challenge of Chechessee. I can attest to the fact that failing to stick your ball on the green can easily result in a double bogey. Chechessee Creek Club represents an awesome private golf club experience in the heart of South Carolina's Lowcountry. I look forward to the next time I get invited to test my game at this challenging 5-star golf course.

So you feel you are a great amateur golfer, right?…read more Well this is definitely the golf course to learn how proficient a golfer you feel you are versus how good a golfer you actually are in reality. How would I know? Because I lived on this Island for seventeen years with its twenty-seven hole Tom Fabio designed golf course will be challenging for any amateur golfer. The Pro Shop staff is friendly, polite, and a lot of fun starting with their Club Pro Wes. Magnolia's nine course has a slope of 145. But if you "feel froggy", then leap over to Palmettos' nine which are my favorite (vistas, and challenges) to test your skills for that specular challenge. Here is a tip: If you hit into the short grass in the rough, unless you have a VERY STRONG SWING, give up! Why? Because when the rough grabs your club and pulls your arms out of your shoulder sockets dislocating them, you may feel it was not worth it to not only blow your round (and pay the off your bet. No, not you, there is not betting in golf) but to have to take that trip to the hospital. Of course, I do not mean you "young buck" because "Yue can do it!" Lol Fees are about right for a course of this quality. The NCAA's Big East both Men's and Women's play their Championship Tournaments here which we watched each year. So I always felt that was a positive endorsement of Callawassie's golf courses. The other reason I feel it is a quality course is the over 12.8 million dollars their club membership (yes, this included me) invested over that 17 years I was a member in retrofitting this course. Another tip: ever putt on concrete? You will be happy you did when you putt on these greens. Believe me when I state the Membership only opened up this gem of a golf course to the public to help offset the very "inexpensive" water regulations the EPA imposed upon all golf courses in the United States but especially in the Southeast. Devon (tender bar) is you host in the main clubhouse. Where the food is good to great depending on the day. You have your choice of quite a few golf courses in the Beaufort/Hilton Head area but if you want to challenge your game then Callawassie's (27) holes will fulfill your need for a great golf challenge and provide you all you can handle, just fine! The 18-hole North course features 6891 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 73.7 and it has a slope rating of 136 on Bermuda grass. If my memory serves me, it was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1981. The "South" course is slightly more open and has a slightly lower slope and course rating than the more challenging North course. 6,555 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.5 USGA rating. On our day of play, the course was in excellent condition, especially the greens. For someone used to fast bent greens, there was a little adjustment but their greens were in excellent shape and rolled true as true can be. I played in April and the azaleas were in full bloom, which had an Augusta feel for a moment. The tall oaks are spectacular, salt marsh and definitely some gators, which I still am never 100% at ease when I play near one. I once hit a 2iron (mishit) and it slammed into the mid-tail of a gator, I was sure he was going to charge, luckily not, but he seemed pissed. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels.

We got out earlier but not sure of the benefit, as we were backed up behind a foursome and a single for entire round. The single behind us didn't seem happy either. The sprinklers were fully engaged on the third hole, making it difficult to play. Sprinklers were recently on at other holes as evidenced by pooling water. Course is beautiful and staff friendly (no one to greet you at the bag drop, so you save on tipping there). Just a little disappointing that the pace of play was dreadfully slow (and errant sprinklers) on an island where golf is the major industry.

We were there 30 minutes early. We were greeted by a friendly kid who loaded our carts for us. He was the only one who seemed genuinely happy to see us. We went into the pro shop and were immediately greeted with a poor attitude. The computer wasn't working properly and he was taking it out on us. No worries, everybody can have a bad day here and there. We walk out to the first hole and the course Marshall had a bad attitude to begin with. He was already upset by the amount of foursomes that knew each other. We were told we need you done within 4 hours because there's a lot of tee times today. He huffed and puffed and drove away. The rest of the time we had him breathing down our necks and upset by different things. Not a single positive thing came out of his mouth. Absolutely terrible mood. With the amount of money my group spent at this course, it was completely uncalled for by the way we were treated. We have been doing golf trips for 8 years now and have never once dealt with such an unprofessional group of bad attitudes. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Food and Beverage operations are not very creative and inconsistently available despite two clubhouses, poorly run compared with ideal operations for a club, board wasteful of monies collected. Called the home of the one percenters. Most members love it, but one must be of a certain mindset. Has a deserved reputation of snobbery and entitlement. That said - an incredible natural oasis in the middle of historic Port Royal Sound. One clubhouse (Die course) overlooks it to the ocean; Nicklaus course overlooks Colleton River to the mainland and Spring Island.
