My husband & I planned an anniversary trip to Beaufort and stayed at the Best Western across from the park because we thought it would be lovely to walk by the water at night. After dinner, we walked down to the park and were very surprised by a tall, chain link fence in front of the entire walkway saying no one was permitted! Not to mention the homeless people all over the benches in the very poorly lit area. To add to it, there is a lot of road work being done on many of the streets here and there are large fences also blocking entire roads off. And the smell of trash is strong while walking around the area. Like so many small towns that used to be nice, looks like politicians have ruined this one too.

This is an extensive paved bike and walking trail which runs around ten miles (as of this writing)…read more More development is planned as part of the larger East Coast Greenway network. This segment of trail has several parking areas, some with water, apparently one with bathrooms that I didn't make it to because I didn't have the time or energy for all ten miles on a hot day. It is built on an abandoned railroad right of way and despite running close to many of the larger roads in the area, has enough trees that it feels like green space unless you are actually crossing a road, which happens occasionally. There are some bridges over splendid estuarine habitat, and there's no reason not to check out the trail if you have time.

Didnt like that we had to pay, but that made it so it wasnt nearly as crowded as other beaches we have been to. Also love that there are bathrooms nearby. If you want to go to the lighthouse (extra fee of $5 a person) I would suggest that you go before the beach. They have a strict limit of how many people can be in the lighthouse at a time and the wait list can get long. We waited over an hour then had 15 to be out before they closed.

Low county feel before you get to the beach. We arrived on a Saturday around 10am, and were able to find parking near beach access. This is a lovely beach. A lot more biodiversity than most other beaches along the coast. It also felt more spacious, less touristy than others we frequent during high season.

There is a plaque mounted that tells the story of it breaking its mooring here in Port Royal and traveling 6000 miles to Scotland, only to be returned several years later. The park also has a historical marker and you know how I love historical markers, even ones from the Confederacy. This one reads, "Known for acts of bravery and outstanding leadership in the defense of Beaufort. This Memorial is erected by the Stephen Elliot Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy opposite the home in which this chapter was organized." I really liked being able to visit the Stephen Elliott Park / Cannon Park in Beaufort. It is very…read morepeaceful and has great views of the water and the bridge. There is a nice fountain and cannons in the park and places to sit down and enjoy a nice quiet moment. You can feel all of the history and all of the years and centuries around you everywhere. I enjoyed being able to come here and enjoy the best of what Beaufort has to offer in a calm and relaxed manner. I recommend this park for a quick visit.
