Some beautiful murals, lots of old photos of the area and boats; and a gift shop with great books, toys, jewelry, and gifts. I got my Mom a hand carved humming bird by a local artist.

During my first climb there was easily readable 19th Century graffiti in pencil - now mostly worn off from many hands steadying themselves on the walls and over written by 'new' graffiti. The museum itself tells about the master boatbuilder Jim Richardson who built the skipjack Nathan and worked on countless boats in his lifetime. Models of skipjacks are displayed and boatbuilder tools, as well as a history of racing boats in Cambridge, Maryland. They also have a library and book store.

Yes, I've been to Amsterdam and this looks just like them. That's because the Zwaanendael Museum was designed to honor the city hall in Hoorn, Netherlands. The museum exhibits the history and settlement of the southern coast of Delaware. I thought the train lines were very interesting as well as the Delftware on display. Perhaps you missed that Lewes was bombarded by the British during the War of 1812 (there's a house with a cannonball not far away). The museum is free but definitely accepts donations. Set in a World War II era hangar, the museum has over 25 historic plans, jets, helicopters, exhibits, artifacts, and more! It also memorializes the 42 naval aviators who died while training at this facility. The museum is pet friendly and dogs must be on a leash. A really cool thing to do is to go inside some of the planes and sit in the cockpit! We met a staff member, Bethany, who was fun to talk to about the museum and its features. This is a great spot to visit any day, and especially when the weather is not cooperating, since it is all indoors. We heard stories from Vietnam Veteran Peter, who was volunteering his time to give a tour and share his personal stories of the war. Thank you to Vietnam Vet, Tom Collins, for starting this museum and providing a place to learn, reflect, and pay respects. There is a chapel and memorial outside along with some military vehicles. Leashed dogs are allowed inside; due to the sensitive nature of the historical items, please use caution while walking through.
