There were some beautiful carved decoys - many with "best in the world" blue ribbons. They had a scavenger hunt with a sticker reward for finding all the things on the clipboard. Some beautiful murals, lots of old photos of the area and boats; and a gift shop with great books, toys, jewelry, and gifts. I got my Mom a hand carved humming bird by a local artist.

We tried opening one door to a random building, but it was locked and we don't even know if that was a building that we were supposed to go to. We stood outside with another couple who are also wondering the same thing who would let have liked to go inside, but we did not see any volunteers around. We stood outside, taking photos as we did not want to interrupt any businesses or homes nearby. Great history. Yes, I've been to Amsterdam and this looks just like them. That's because the Zwaanendael Museum was designed to honor the city hall in Hoorn, Netherlands. The museum exhibits the history and settlement of the southern coast of Delaware. I thought the train lines were very interesting as well as the Delftware on display. Perhaps you missed that Lewes was bombarded by the British during the War of 1812 (there's a house with a cannonball not far away). The museum is free but definitely accepts donations. The staff was very friendly and helpful and happy to answer questions and provide information about the area. One tip: bring plenty of bug spray! There were a lot of flies when we visited, and they were definitely noticeable while walking the trails. Overall, a clean, peaceful stop with helpful staff and a great way to learn more about Assateague Island before exploring.

This Visitor Center was a delight! They have aquariums with live sea life like shrimp, fish, and…read morecrabs, and they even have a touch tank with animals you can touch during certain programs. There's a junior ranger program your kiddos can participate in to earn a badge. And you can find out the programs being offered that day, which are quite plentiful. The day I visited, the programs included crabbing, clamming, searching for sea life, touch tank, and even kayaking (for a fee). I've been to my share of national parks but this was unique in the breadth of awesome programs they offer. (My kids had a blast at the FREE crabbing program - the rangers put chicken neck on a line and then you use it to lure the crabs up.)
