While the administration pays a lot of lip service to the Reggio Emilia philosophy, that's all marketing and zero substance at this school. Reggio Emilia at its core is adaptive and flexible; the goal is tailor the educational approach to the learning style of each individual child. Contrary to that approach, the teaching staff (who, it must be said, are mostly very kind and caring) are trained to follow a single approach that is applied to all the children. My child attended the 2's and 3's program. When I observed that some of the classroom approaches were too rigid for her in some ways, and not challenging enough in others, and that the environment was in some ways not conducive to her learning style, I made suggestions to the administration about ways to adapt the setting to better suit her needs. My requests, which were trivial in scope and would not have posed much of a challenge from a budget or logistics perspective, were largely ignored. Instead, I was advised to hire an additional teacher, at my own expense, to work one-on-one with my child because her existing teachers were "too busy" with the other kids to handle my requests. Imagine that: after paying a tuition of over $15,000 per year for pre-school (which was more than I paid for my excellent private college!), I was told that in order to meet my child's educational requirements, I would need to pay for another teacher, an additional $120 per hour! Like the other parent below, we moved our daughter to another Williamsburg school, which has smaller class sizes, and an administration that cares about cultivating a healthy environment of learning. The people who run Williamsburg Northside care more about cultivating a healthy bottom line.

Not to mention "inexperienced" as I was told they could not handle my child and if my child "misbehaved" they felt it was "best" to seclude them from their classmates especially during play time. They actually preferred my child not to stay for after school because they claimed they didn't have staff certified to handle my child. I need childcare until 6pm isn't your "reported" operational time from 8-6pm??? but you are not able to provide that for me because majority of the teachers just want to leave early everyday. But I bet you get paid for the full hours of operation for my child from DOE anyway huh. I had to beg the teachers to inform me on what is going on and how my child's day was or how did he/ she get an open wound on there knee or a knot on their head when your supposed to be watching the kids. I noticed when other parents (Caucasian) or a male parents came by they are real chatty. Ms. Monica straight up ignored my child and I as she walked past us. That's rude because kids are innocent and the least she can do is say hello to a student new or old. People should choose a profession they love and not just be in it for a paycheck. Our time at this school has been very stressful causing us to feel treatment has been racially motivated. There are more incidents but I will not go into details because it can get pretty extensive as you can already see. If your child is anything but black or brown you will be welcomed with loving arms.

For both transitions, the teachers and staff were incredibly caring and helpful with easing her in. She has been through two different classrooms as she's aged up. In both cases, her teachers showed incredible love and patience. I never doubted that she was in good hands and was safe and happy. She's thrived socially and has learned so many amazing things. She regularly pipes up about something and I wonder where on earth she learned it without me - daycare! But what I love is that all of this learning takes place during play. I'm very opposed to academic setting learning at this age and Learning Steps prioritizes learning through play. She has a lot of fun during the day and comes home with adorable artwork to show. To know that my daughter is in an active environment, socializing with children her age, learning topics she is excited about and expanding her language skills is truly a blessing. And I quote "if we give your son extra time then we would have to give everyone extra time" clearly displaying their lack of understanding what an IEP is. We handed the nurse a picture of our son and details in his epilepsy. Copies enough for every teacher and staff that he would be in contact with. Two months into the trimester, not one teacher knew he had epilepsy nor received our packet. There were so many problems with this beautiful school with their hard wood decorative cut logs, newly constructed labs, fish tanks and dogs and peacocks roaming the grounds. We were lured in by the appearance but that all it was. The school is very popular so my son was crammed into a classroom with 40 students!! Very disappointed and wanted to let the principal know when we decided to leave. I now have a 2 years old son who currently attends this program. what I love most they are TEACHING the children. My son knows sign language (ASL), reads and writes. They take the time out to take the children to the Playground when the weather is nice. Also supplies great meals for the children. The communication with the teachers and teachers aides are great as well. I recommend this childcare program 100%.
