Ned provided us with great information about the history of the town, the railroad (although some of that was incorrect as he kept saying Raleigh instead of Norfolk as it pertained to the railroad and it kept saying that one of the railway companies "left" when in fact, they were merged. Maybe this wouldn't have mattered so much except someone in our group was very familiar with the railroad) But Ned was very personable and you could tell he loved history and as we do too we really enjoyed his tour. The food on the tour was fairly varied and unique to the town (a must!) and it was great to hear the back story of the ownership of the restaurants. (I was a little worried when at the first two restaurants we were served seafood dishes, a seafood bisque and shrimp and grits as one person in our group doesn't really like seafood and I think this is a risky choice for a tour. Also at Chocolate Paper we were given two mediocre Asher chocolates to try instead of some of their more expensive and more delicious Debrands chocolates.) One person in our group thought there wasn't enough food and thought another restaurant or two should be added. I tend to agree when compared to the cost of this tour against other tours I've taken. Had the cost been a little lower I think the amount of food would've been fine. All in all, a great tour though. Ned really was a great guide, I hope he leads more tours, I really learned a lot!

This week, Marsha sent my sister an email stating that she was cancelling my sister's reservation for another wedding of 350 guests. Apparently someone is being deployed, and my sister's date was the only one that worked. I'm sorry, WHAT? The entire point of putting a deposit down on a date is so that someone else cannot book it out from under you. Not only that, but the least she could have done was called my sister instead of leaving it up to email. What if it had gone to spam? Additionally, she should have called around to other caterers to see who was available on that date, and then referred my sister to them (instead of making my sister scramble to find someone else). If I'm being REALLY honest, Marsha should have referred this other party to another caterer, but this one was going to make her more money than my sister's, so screw the smaller wedding, right? Unless you like to play things fast and loose when it comes to wedding planning, book a different caterer. She's clearly only driven by bigger paydays and will leave you high and dry at the drop of the hat.

The reception space was beautiful with tons of space, good food, good accommodations, and a good time was had by all. It was very convenient to go from the rooms to the reception without ever leaving the building! The suites were spacious, clean, & well-appointed, with comfortable beds & nice linens. The sofa beds were made up as requested, with a bottle of anniversary champagne for our son & daughter-in-law. We had also asked for a microwave (not standard in the hotel), but we did not get one. We had 5 grandchildren who really wanted a popcorn party after a brief appearance at the wedding reception, so I was a bit disappointed. However, before we returned to the room with the children, a microwave had arrived with a kind note from Gloria (Guest Services Manager)...she had gone to a store & purchased a microwave for our use! Talk about great customer service! And on that note, my multiple email and phone conversations with Madelyn & Candace (Guest Services) were absolutely of the highest caliber of customer service I have ever experienced! They were always so polite, friendly, professional, and beyond helpful...no matter how many questions I asked! I cannot remember who I asked about breakfast (sorry ladies), but one of these 2 awesome employees arranged for complimentary coffee & pastries for all of us who were visiting for the wedding, as the restaurant had just opened that week, but was closed the Monday morning after the wedding. Madelyn & Gloria were both very helpful with issues after I booked & cancelled through Expedia, then reserved directly through the hotel for a better rate. One final note-it was super cool how the old bank had been transformed & repurposed into this wonderful space, and the kids loved exploring & checking out the vaults! This hotel is so elegant, the staff is wonderful and every room is well appointed with a Lavazza coffee/espresso machine, a mini fridge and complementary waters. I also love that the "lobby" has extra waters, juices, yogurts, fruit and breakfast bars available to guests 24/7. Perfection!

They were full of flavor and moist. The Khachapuri was also good but the bread was stuck to the parchment paper it was baked on pretty hard. In my opinion, it needed a touch of garlic but still good. It was nice to drop by for a little to have some cocktails but wish there was more on the menu.
