Pros: -LOTS of activities for little kids -Great security at all times thanks to LPD and their mobile command center -Tons of parking, thought it fills up -Local groups have fundraisers with discounted wristbands that are easy to find -Lots of food options, including stands run by local nonprofit organizations -The ice arena is open with a vending machine and bathrooms. And it's air conditioned -Handicap parking available Cons: - Free parking fills up fast -Gets a bit chaotic in the evenings when the older crowds come in -Craft show is more like a vendor show and out of the way -Some of the workers did not have appropriate sun coverage in the heat and we felt so bad they weren't provided that. -General fair overpriced everything. It was nearly 100 degrees when we went, so we brought an entire backpack of frozen water bottles as well as all the sun gear. Probably due to the heat, there were no lines and our kids were happy to zoom around keeping cool and riding everything they could. There are a bunch of toddler and kid rides which was just what we wanted. One adult wristband was enough to go on a few additional rides with our 5 year old. We brought lunch and ate at covered picnic tables. It was hot, and as adults we were sort of miserable trudging all over the blacktop, but our kids had so much fun and 6 months later, are still talking about it.

Positive: Great for history buffs and geeks, which I am. Negative: Always held in August, which can be hellishly hot and humid in Michigan. Positive: Riverside Park, which is the main site for the festival, is pretty shady. So is Frog Island, where some auxiliary activities occur. Negative: It's usually easy to find parking in downtown Ypsilanti, but that is not true at all during the festival. Don't go down there that weekend thinking you're going to get a quick dinner at Sidetrack, because you'll probably have to park several blocks away, walk, and then wait behind a line out the door. Positive: Lots of local groups set up booths at Heritage Festival, and it's a good way to find out about local activist groups, artisans, and so on. I once worked a booth there for GLBT issues when the city ordinance making sexual orientation a protected status was under fire. I met a lot of cool people that way, including a man who had lived just blocks away from me and whose house I had walked past for years. Negative: It's so popular that it's often really, really crowded. Positive: Admission is free! Other positives from past years have included The Flying Wallendas acrobatic troupe, historical reenactments and a health tent where you can get your cholesterol checked or do other health screenings after eating lots of greasy-but-tasty food from vendors.

Eager to get out of the house and try something different, I headed over to the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival recently. I love local festivals and figured this one would be worth checking out. Be prepared to walk a few blocks or else pay $5 or more for parking. The $5 was being called a "donation" but the organization soliciting them wouldn't let you park without paying that amount. The last time I checked, that was called a fee. I guess now I can say "Been there, done that." It was mostly booths from religious organizations or selling the type of knickknacks you might find at the state fair. After making a trip around the festival area and not finding anything too interesting, I decided to head up to Depot Town and grab a bite. I'll upvote it a star because admission is free. Next year, I'll skip the festival and head straight to dinner.
